Glad you got to check this off the bucket list everyone should watch this at least once in their life. The Hobbit trilogy isn't as good but it has it's plusses such as an actual dragon and a whole crew of dwarves. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. 😊
That's why it has 11 OSCARS, although nobody cares about the Oscars anymore, but at that time, the stories made sense, I'm glad you enjoyed this work of cinematic art, Cheers!!!
Not to mention fantasy wasnt an oscar worthy genre for a long time. PJ's LotR was the one to break their preconception.

Back then the Oscars were still very relevant tho so with that context in mind it's still very impressive. But yeah the Oscars are a joke now
I remember at the time people were wanting Andy Serkis to win best actor for Gollum, which would have been unprecedented...it still would be. Every facial expression, movement, voicing, was all Andy Serkis so I don't think he was undeserving simply because it was a CGI character.
That was the only time I ever participated in an Oscar Watch Party.

Gets me every single time. Sums up the whole story. The little hobbits, surrounded by brave and powerful friends, being the ones to overcome the temptation of power. Just wanting to get back home and staying humble through it all.

Completely agree. The only other part that gets me feeling emotional is when Gandalf is instilling hope for Pippin and ensuring that death is not the end. Tolkien was such a beautiful writer!
When Sam says"I can't carry the ring but I can carry you. Come on!" 20 years later and still gets me every time
39:44 Amazingly, the multiple endings attracted a lot of criticism by professional movie critics back in 2003. It was called “overindulgent” and “anticlimactic” and whatever. In present day almost everyone seems to enjoy the 20 min of feel-good payoff delivered.
I think it changes a bit in the modern context where people watch the trilogy as a single unit... 20 minute ending is a big deal for a 3 hour movie; but not for a 12 hour one

I agree these are 3 of the best movies ever made. They are among the best adaptions of books to movies, as well. My only complaints are superficial. The sometimes less than believable CGI and compositing, the use of real-life little people for the hobbits and Gimli (they dont have the same proportions, nor move like the actual normal height actors), and the forced perspective (actors are looking at an object and not a person) all stick out to me like a sore thumb. Beyond those minor problems, these movies are near perfect.

Another thing that is super poignant is Frodo's life after returning to Bag End. Frodo's fate is a soldier's fate, well known by Tolkien from his service in WWI. PTSD wasn't well known as anything more than "shell shock" during much of Tolkien's life, but clearly Frodo is a broken soul. He holds it together for a few years, but he has found that his life is unbearable and that his spiritual wounds won't ever heal. Though he saved it for the world, what he loved in life is now gone beyond his reach and no longer his. It's so unbearable that he chooses to leave Bag End, his loved ones, his own hopes and dreams and ambitions - literally his life - behind and to "sail away" with Gandalf and the elves to find peace in The Undying Lands. Aman. The Blessed Realm.
It's a beautiful, gentle way to say that Frodo chose to leave mortal lands and pass away in order to find peace in, essentially, heaven.
Galadriel did say that the quest would claim his life.
It's dismaying that the song, "Into the West," at the end of this third part, is not paid attention to as the credits roll. It's sung by Annie Lennox and the lyrics are so heart rending, but apropos for the wrap-up. A beautiful piece of music. Frodo also carries a lot of guilt because he is seen as the hero who destroyed the ring but he knows in the end he failed and chose the ring. It only got destroyed out of happenstance because gollum stole the ring
Frodo did not die by going to the undying lands. As a hobbit, he had the “gift of men” which was a mystery to the elves….illuvatar had plans for men after death. That gift was not taken from the hobbits. They experienced healing of spirit in the undying lands but eventually met a natural death. They did not gain immortality like the elves.
@@CodeeXD Not happenstance at all, as Gandalf said that Gollum had a part to play. Frodo was only tasked with taking it there, and that he did. No living being had the strength to toss it in willingly, there at the edge, where the Ring was fighting its hardest.

Merry and Pippin: After the return of the kings, At the age of 102, Merry returned to Rohan and Gondor with Pippin; they died in Gondor, and were laid to rest among the Kings of Gondor in Rath Dínen, then moved to lie next to Aragorn. His son succeeded him as Master of Buckland.
Sam: Following the War of the Ring, Sam returned to the Shire and his role as gardener, helping to replant the trees which had been destroyed while he was away. He was elected Mayor of the Shire for seven consecutive terms.
Legolas: After Aragorn's death, Legolas made a ship in Ithilien and left Middle-earth to go over the sea. His strong friendship with Gimli prompted Legolas to invite him to accompany him to the Undying Lands; making him the first and only Dwarf to do so. He was never seen again in Middle-earth.
Legolas and Gimli stayed friends showing each other places they loved and eventually took a ship to the undying lands together.
…..and Sam, having been a ring-bearer for a time, went to the Undying Lands at the age of 102.

This is my favorite movie out of the trilogy. Theodens speech then the Rohirrim charge across Pelennor fields has got to be one of my all time favorite movie scenes. Great reaction.

I can't pick any of them. I get why this one is most people's favorite but without the setup of the previous two, this one doesn't have the impact that it does.
Fellowship is my favourite. The last act of that film is absolute perfection.

Some few things to note about this part of the story: Eowyn DIDNT single-handedly kill the WK, Merry's dagger was Enchanted with spells SPECIFICALLY against the WK, when Merry stabbed him in the lag, he disrupted the spell that held the WKs body together, also, Arwen is 2700 at the end of the movie, Aragorn makes the lands of Ithilien into a Princedom and names Faramir prince of Ithilien and he marries Eowyn , about 70 years after Frodo and Bilbo left, Sam's wife Rosie passes, and Sam, because he was a Ringbearer too, if only for a little while, is granted passage to Valinor as well and is reunited in friendship with Frodo in Valinor
Aragorn doesn't marry Eowyn. Faramir does.

I love Frodo's incredulity, upon awakening in that plush bed in Minas Tirith, not only at the fact that he's alive but also at Gandalf's being there by his bedside. Remember, the last thing Frodo knew of Gandalf was that he'd fallen into the abyss with the Balrog as they were making their way through Moria.
Also, the "you bow to no one" - followed by EVERYONE bowing to the hobbits - gets me every damn time.
I always imagined the majority of the people had no idea about the hobbits and the ring but when the king and all the other badasses and legendary elves are bowing were like “oh shit I guess we’ll bow now and figure it out later”
Technically, he wakes up in Cair Andros - another Gondor city on an island in the river, closer to the Black Gate. It's where the final regrouping took place before they marched on the Black Gate. Some of the army stayed behind at Cair Andros to fight orcs. I guess Ciar Andros is more of an outpost than a city. Not that it matters for the sake of the movie.
All that matters at that point is the ring is destroyed, the orcs have fled, and there's a safe place for Frodo and everyone else to sleep. Then they can take their time and go back to Minas Tirith for the coronation without having to run for their lives or fight for their lives on the way.
I don't think I will ever forget seeing that moment for the first time. The level of respect and honor for basically the King of the human race to bow, just amazing and powerful. From that scene to when Sam closes his door, I am a mess
I think that scene is by far the worst thing in the whole saga and one of the worst scenes in a big movie. It's so bad shooted that seems Jackson and Lesnie (the DOP) was pretty drunk shooting it.

The dead oliphant where Pippin finds Merry holds the record for being the largest movie prop ever made. Helm’s Deep, Minas Tirith, Rivendale, Fangorn Forest, Hobbiton and Edoras were all practical sets taking months to build. Hobbiton was built a year before filming in order to allow the plants to grow naturally. If you can y’all gotta watch some of the BTS films in the Extended Extras. This really isn’t a trilogy; it’s all one movie (and book) split into three parts. I have read the books at least once a year since 1978 and I lost count of how many times I’ve watched the movies. These books got me through some very rough times growing up. It’s funny how, before these movies, people made fun of those of us who loved these books. Now it’s considered cool.

It’s interesting that Gandalf’s words from the mines of Moria ended up being true, when it comes to Gollum.
“It’s a pity Bilbo didn’t kill him when he had the chance.”
“Pity? It was pity that spared him in the those caves. I feel that he (Gollum) has yet a part to play in all of this.”
And he was right. If Gollum hadn’t been a part of this story, then Frodo would have succumbed to the ring in the end. He fought for it and ended up ironically being the one to destroy it. He was possibly one of the most important parts of all of this.
Also some people have speculated that when you make a promise and you swear by a powerful magical object like, the one ring, for instance, it actually becomes magically binding. Don’t know if you remember Sméagol from the two towers, but he swears to serve Frodo “on the precious.” He then breaks that promise, and because of it, is fated to die by the ring. And that’s exactly what happens. He dies, directly because of that ring. It’s allllll connected.
It's because of this the Tolkien actually went back and re-wrote Bilbo's encounter with Gollum from The Hobbit. In the first edition, Gollums just lets him leave, but in the re-write, The Proff gave Bilbo the chance to kill Gollum to escape, but he saw him and took pity on him and didn't kill him.
Actually Frodo used the power of the ring to curse Gollum in the book.
He commanded: "Begone, and trouble me no more! If you touch me ever again, you shall be cast yourself into the Fire of Doom."
Then, when Gollum attacked him, the curse fulfilled.
It's also pertinent to mention that they wouldn't have gotten there at all without him. Yes, he was luring them into a trap with Shelob, but it also was the only legitimate way to get into Mordor without knocking on the front door. Also, I've always felt that Smeagol kind of won out over Gollum in the end. He knew he couldn't beat Gollum anymore, but he absolutely could let Gollum have the ring like he desired and take all of them out together, which is exactly what happened... was a part of that fall into Mt Doom intentional? I like to think so.

In the Simarillion, Feanor and his sons swear an oath to get the Silmarills back from Morgoth and that is binding and it leads to their, and many others' doom.

That scene where Aragorn says, "My friends... you bow to no one" -- and then bows to the hobbits always gets me.

Next year is the 20th anniversary of this film coming out, and I’m sure a bunch of imax theaters will be showing it. Definitely worth experiencing this on the big screen.
I’m so glad you guys loved this trilogy as much as we all do. In my view, they are the absolute best movies that have ever been made, and they will remain timeless for future generations because they cut straight to the heart of the human experience.
All I want is to watch these movies in theaters again. They’re so good, and I’ve learned so much about LOTR since I first saw the movies in theaters . I really do hope they rerelease them.

Pretty sure select theaters showed Fellowship last year, and Towers this year. Next year, I am sure Return of the King will be showing. Not in my area, as I live in a pretty rural area, but I saw some theaters in big cities were offering them. I don’t recall if it was the theatrical edition or extended. Presumably the former, but still.

You're right a 4 hour film can unpack more of the story, but what's crazy about LOTR is that if you read the books you will realize how much they still had to leave out and still that needed 4 hours. It's an epic tale and I recommend the books.
Also a fun fact is Pippin and Merry stayed real life best friends and have their own Podcast together. They are so fun in real life too.
16:44 In the book it's even more impressive that Sam manages to give the Ring back to Frodo. because Sam uses it (to get into the tower) and it does try to tempt him.

@jacobmonks3722 doesn't look like you got a reply to this, but the ring doesn't really work the same way in the books. Sauron can't sense the bearer unless it's special locations if I got it correct, but there are many vids and shorts on yt that explains it thoroughly 😄
You will never forget this trilogy... been watching it off and on since the Fellowship came out.... we vets had to wait a year between movies...You guys are so lucky to have them all at the same time. Waiting a year between them to find out what happened was really really hard to do.... Love your reactions!
I bought the books after The Two Towers, and devoured them twice before the Return. I got John Howe to sign them ♥️
It was really hard, but I’m actually really happy that I got to experience them in that way. Me and my sister avoided spoilers carefully for three years and the payoff of this last movie was amazing. It was a three year long experience for us.

Dude the books are SO GOOD! I just got chills reading that. I can't remember where in the books, but there's a scene where Gandalf is on Shadowfax and he rears up as lightning flashes behind him and it's like I can hear the screaming guitar music it's so friggin epic and metal.

This is my favorite passage of the book and I still vividly remember reading it from my childhood. Theoden turning from an exhausted old man to a literal god of battle, an unstoppable force of nature, gives me chills.
While it has epic moments, the song of the Mounds of Mundburg puts all those scenes in a certain perspective. There are epic beats, but are they truly epic when all is said and done? Or is the only thing left tragedy and loss? That's what I like about Tolkien. He can draw you in with what's today a basic fantasy type story with all the tropes of evil and epicness and such, but with a slight of hand push the reader to think about the overarching implications.
Eyowin and Faramir's marriage helped further unite the two cities of Rohan and Gondor. In time, Aragorn made Faramir Prince of Ithilien. Sam would sail to the undying lands later in life since he was a ring bearer. All of their futures are told in the Simirilian i believe. Or can find them through some research. Eowyn was able to kill him because Merry stabbed him with the elven blade first which weakened him enough for her
man, the utter disbelief at "the ring is mine!" is amazing. When I saw this, in a theatre, and that happened and that amazing tragic music enters, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. still can't.
Just think, this epic was written in the 1950s by a British WWII Veteran, so the scene where Eowyn says, "I am no man!" should be considered revolutionary.
But the best line of all...
"My friends! You bow... to no one."
Makes me cry every time.
When the four Hobbits are back in the Shire, sitting at the table in the Pub, watching all of the oblivious townsfolk, that is what it is like for us veterans everyday. We may come back home, but it doesn't feel like home anymore, and the somnambulent public goes about their lives, clueless to the horrors we experienced, but we would NEVER wish those citizens to experience any of it. We ventured into the valley of the shadow of death so they would not have to.
Quick correction/And a wee bit more lol: He was a Veteran of The First World War. The worst, and most impactful time during his service, was when he spent 4 months in the trenches on the Western Front. The brutal, but also amazing things he saw during that time, such as the powerful bond and brotherhood that is formed between soldiers during such dark and difficult times, are the reasons why we see those themes and emotional relationships in the books/films. He also lost all but 1 of his closest childhood friends during the war, which in my opinion is the reason why all but 1 of the original Fellowship members survive.
To your point: I'm a veteran as well, so I understand where you're coming from, and you ain’t wrong that's for sure lol.
The "killed by no man" theme was borrowed from Shakespeare, but in Shakespeare, the prophecy says something like "no man born of a woman" and the (male) killer was delivered by a caesarean. (I wish I knew wich play, but I don't)
Tolkien said he always thought that part was stupid, because you know, it is pretty stupid.
So anyway, he shamelessly stole it and improved on it to make one hell of a plot twist.
Also, since Eowyn is the only woman in all of middle-earth, you can't blame the wich king for beeing caught off guard.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I remember watching it for the first time when it came out in theaters, I remember immediately going home and demanding my mother buy me the books (which I consumed in two weeks), and I remember watching the extended editions for the first time when they came out. If I could wave a magic wand and experience this story for the first time I would. It's truly a joy to watch y'all see it for the first time.

I really appreciated your comments at the end about Aragorn being humble. I truly think this is one of the most important qualities for a true leader and is very underappreciated for how important it is, especially in our modern world. This series, both the books and the way the movies portrayed them, demonstrates so many truly important aspects of life.
Thank you for giving Frodo props. A lot of reactors don't give him the credit he deserves. They see him as weak and whiny and it's so frustrating. If Sam is number 1 for me, Frodo is 1b.
Also everyone is a hero, they all did their part to destroy the ring.
I hope you both can find some 'behind the scenes' videos about LOTR, where you can also see Viggo Mortenson (Aragorn) in full costume going fly fishing between takes, among other things, especially when they talk about the natural scenery.

Great reaction! I first read the books during Christmas vacation in 1965 and have reread them every year since. The movies also came out just before Christmas 2001, 2002, and 2003. The timing of your reaction couldn't have been better.
Honestly brings joy to my heart to watch people experience this masterpiece for the first time. I wish I could go back and do it all again. These films will forever have a place in my heart and even though I’ve watched them more times than I can count they truly have got me through hard times and genuinely show the courage and love of life and things are always worth fighting for ❤ first video I’ve watched of yours and I love you both

The part where Theoden leads the charge of his army was always one of my favorite "scenes" in the book, and the movie does it justice to some extent (notice that Theoden outrides his army). In the book he gives the same speech as in the movie, and then:

Once again, The Perfect Match provides the perfect reaction. Watching every expression across the entire spectrum, from still in anticipation, to arm raising shouts & screams, from silence with tears or hush from fears, Vince and Shoshana, the two of you complement one another so incredibly well in so many aspects, you 'bounce off' each other so well, your individual insights and observations go hand in hand with those moments when you share identically matching emotions and expressions. Just to mention an example, my favorite is whenever Shoshana leans her head against Vince's shoulder and whenever both of you shout out "Let's Go!" lol.

I didn't see it mentioned in the first 20 comments, but it's easy to forget that Frodo and Sam thought Gandalf was dead until they saw him post eagle rescue, and the rest of the Fellowship didn't know for sure if Frodo and Sam were alive until after their rescue from Mount Doom also.
I think that's why they were so happy to see each other when Frodo woke up after the eagle rescue.

My favorite fact about this movie is that during the charge of the rohirim(rohans charge) the only extras that were allowed to do this were the ones that read the book. It was because Peter Jackson(director) wanted them to know the importance of the charge itself. Shows the dedication to the trilogy. Thanks yo for this! It was the best Christmas present ever!
Soemthing to note in the books we are told that denethor had a palantir and was having a battle of wills with Sauron and that’s why he ends up going crazy and acting like this

I love these movies so much. I think it still stands up today and will always be one of the best series made. One of the things Tolkien wanted to show at the end was that coming back from war doesn't mean you can ever come back the way you used to be. Tolkien knew this after fighting in WW1, as well as his friends. Frodo was never right after he got back, his wounds from the spider (Shelob) and the Witch King would ache badly on the anniversary of when he got them, also carrying the Ring always leaves a permanent scar deep in you. Leaving with the elves was the only way he or Bilbo would ever be fully healed and find peace. So glad you both loved these movies, a part of you both will always remain in Middle Earth, and isn't that a grand thing. Take care!

Sam is the reason the ring got destroyed!! For sure the MVP!!❤ I still get goosebumps during the scene where the riders of Rohan ride toward the battle, the music, the speech, the feeling of hope!! Never gets old.

Can I just say that the two of you are so adorable! I have watched a few reactions to LOTR and yours is easily the best. Your delight in the battles and the moments when the guy got the girl brought a balance you don’t normally see in reaction videos. The take home message of LOTR is to never lose hope. I am much older than you are, but seeing your reactions make me think of what Gandalf says to Frodo about how the ring was meant to come to him and how that was a good and hopeful thing. Loved your reactions to these. There are so many channels on RUclips that you can tell are just posting certain movies because they draw clicks and then fake their way through it. But you can't fake the look in the eyes at 31:55. That's pure, authentic Lord of the Rings joy.
Great reactions. A very enjoyable watch. The only thing I'd recommend is to use better headphones on your rewatch instead of sharing a pair of ear buds. The soundtrack and score deserves that.

The Lord of the Rings book changed my life back in the 1970's and made me want to be a writer. 45 years later I completed my book which was inspired by Tolkien's masterpiece. One of the things not many people point out about Eowyn and Faramir, Aragorn tells her “it is a shadow and a thought that you love.” Eowyn was in love with the idea of Aragorn. This noble hero standing against the overwhelming darkness. But she didn’t actually love him, like him as Aragorn. Just the idea he represented.
But when she meets Faramir, she falls in love with both those aspects. The noble princeling standing against the forces of the Enemy, and the good man that Faramir is. Because for Faramir, it was never about the fighting. Literally the best quote in all of Tolkien’s writings is Faramir explaining his philosophy. “I do not love the sword for its sharpness. Nor the arrow for its swiftness. Nor the warrior or his glory. I love only that which they defend.” It wasn’t the fighting that pushed Faramir forward, it was what he was fighting for.
And that’s what Eowyn falls in love with.
