Tourists also get treatment in Accident and Emergency, its a reciprocal agreement with some countries.

Great to catch-up on your thoughts after 4-months+ stay in NZ. Mado I had never heard of ORF and so sorry you had to experience this random virus caught from sheep via a small cut in your thumb. I love how you both have embraced the coffee culture here and I miss this when travelling overseas. Great that you guys are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get stuck into gardening and spring is a wonderful time to be in the garden (I guess you guys don't suffer allergies from pollen as some do here). I had never heard of woofing but I am too old in that regard and great you could experience house sitting in beautiful York Bay. Remember NZ is surrounded by ocean like Ireland and the weather can be very changeable, especially in Spring. The South Island is like another country almost as the mountains are so much bigger and such diversity in landscapes. Looking forward to see more from you guys.

If you are trying Marmite/Vegemite use a good amount of butter and only a tiny bit of the spread then it becomes a lovely savoury experience rather than mouth burning salt, definitely don't spread it like Nutella or jam.

The secret is that you need to have it with 80% butter or margerine and 20% marmite or vegemite. If you get the mix right then you'll know and hopefully understand why we love it. Hope the rest of your trip goes well with no further trips to the doctor required. Take care :)

Just remember South island can have some extreme temperatures (high) in summer, dry and hot, sounds like you will be in New Zealand in early autumn also if you are you want to be in arrow town it's world renown for it's colours in autumn as the leaves on the trees change colour. If you are anywhere near Twizel you have to try the Salmon sashimi at High Country Farms. Supplementary to my comment below, the 'rookie' mistake anyone new to Aotearoa makes, is they put way to much Marmite on their toast! It will not taste good even to most Kiwi's! It's the adage that a little goes a long way. (It's preferable to use on toast by the way. UNLESS it's FRESH bread spread with butter/margarine and marmite with cold iceburg lettuce added. Yummy!!) It you end up having a crack, I would love to know your thoughts. 🙂

Hey you two, glad your enjoying NZ, you will really enjoy the south island its ten times more beautiful than the north, the north has some nice spots but nearly all of the south island is an eye opener, I enjoy the south so much, you just feel alive down south, west coast all the way down spectacular to me, if your going to pass through Christchurch at some point call into lake clearwater stunning, $10 per vehicle overnight or 5 mins back to lake camp is free, so quite, can have open fires there but not much wood about so maybe take some with ya if you go, always go there when down south along with lake tekapo go up to the observatory in tekapo for the views, they will blow you away, cost about $8 to pass through the gate to get up there but worth it, if you also go to the end of eastbourne where you currently are unless you have left york bay already, you can hire a bike an bike to the pencarrow light house or walk there will take a while, you'll see the ferry's come in the harbour mouth, maybe little blue penguins, enough ramblin, wish was coming down south with ya, never mind another time, as said enjoy take care, cheers!

Marmite is British and Vegemite is Australian neither are from NZ. They are similar because Vegemite was an attempt to make something similar to Marmite in Australia in the 1920s when they were having difficulty getting supplies. Not sure what Marmite is made from but Vegemite was made from yeast extract which was left over fron the beer brewing process.

NZ Marmite is a different product to British marmite. It’s made by a different manufacturer and has a different flavour and ingredients, it’s been made here since 1919. Vegemite, NZ Marmite and British Marmite are all made from yeast extract from beer brewing, NZ marmite just kept the name when they started making their own version instead of using a different one like Vegemite did.

    Some info about questions asked.
Private schools. Can be expensive, and you usually need to be in the zone they are based in. Family connections can also get you in. The most expensive and exclusive is King's College, in Auckland. Very expensive, and where most of the movers and shakers (leaders in politics and business) have gone, and send their children.
Snakes. We have none, but we have quite a few varieties of small lizards and geckos, the most famous being the tuatara. Our only native mammal is a small variety of bat. All other mammals have been introduced sometime in the last hundred years, or so.
Vegimite, marmite. Only use a light scraping on hot buttered toast, don't slather it on, whatever you do!

Probably unrelated, but who knows, decades ago.

@@GlenAndMadoYou both are most welcome. Thank you for the right spelling of the Orf virus, such a nasty thing! Doing my best to enjoy every day, thanks. Every year as kids we would each have a pet orphan lamb to raise. I must have been a particularly dumb child, as I remember naming one of my lambs "Whitey", as it had white wool (surprise!). The next year my lamb had dirty wool, so, you guessed it, I named it "Browny". The following year, my lamb was very poorly, so I cleverly named it "Wonky" - and Wonky lived to a grand old age. Hope your Cook Strait crossing is like a mirror, and not too rough. Welcome to the South Island!

Do you think it's harder to make New Zealander friendships, despite the friendliness and the shorter time period you've had to make them? I ask this as I think this is a complaint for some residing in Australia and new zealand by picking up on some comments from new people living in both countries. (It's about not getting invited much to their place and doing things with them, from those you meet and make a friendship-in the beginning anyway?)
....I learned about this when I watched a programme about new residents from other lands living in Australia on an Australian programme on the ABC or SBS channel years ago now.
I guess you answered that by both of you commenting about a too short a time to make them deeper and that fellow countrymen/ women are hard to bump into?
At any rate, you're a lovely genuine couple any all the very best!

I hope you are well and having a great day :) Yeah from a traveller's perspective, we are talking about not having these deep connections due to moving from place to place always but that's on us as we choose to make that sacrifice but it's hard at times. Basically, if we stayed in one place in New Zealand there wouldn't be any issue whatsoever making good friends, we come across so many great people whom we wish we could do more things with.

Kia Ora Glen Kia Ora Mado, my second time surfing your channel 1st time was just yesterday, Dec 17/23. I never knew about that virus you picked up from a lamb. Plus, thanks, I didn't know antibiotics did not treat a virus thats why I don't like Dr's for they can ( & in your case ) did, give you the wrong prognosis ending with (yes) a traumatizing hangover which lined up with (that Dr's) brilliant form of reasoning. (If I eliminate the positive, I must surely get my mindless result again. But anyway, guys, sorry something just popped up, so I'll leave it there. I'm enjoying your take on things and hope you have a more productive time in all you do. God is good amen guys.

Yeah mado had a dreadful experience but very glad it’s all over and now she’s immune to catching it again. Unfortunately it was a virus and the antibiotics are for treating infections so it didn’t do any justice taking them as it probably just make the situation worst. She got the virus at the worst possible level with the breakout. Thanks for tuning in though and hope your having a lovely day my friend 😃

DEFINITELY get health insurance if you travel to NZ on a Tourist Visa.
If you come on a Work Visa (expectation is that you're paying taxes) and have an injury, then the Kiwi taxpayers fund care via ACC and hospital emergency rooms.
I'm sorry you had to go through that and glad that you got the help that all of us pay for with our taxes.
I've seen some other tourists vlogs saying "it's free" when no, it's not! Makes me lose my mind! It's paid for by *generations* of Kiwis.
It's not "the government" it's us Kiwis who built our society this way.
Trust me, in the past there have been governments who have tried to do away with our publicly funded healthcare and ACC ... but we vote them out as soon as we realise what the buggers are up to.
Anyway! Arohanui you you both ❤❤❤
