NO SHOES??? i never saw that but maybe because i live in the South. but beach or picnic areas yes I've seen no shoes there.
Swimming pools are generally not heated, there’s no tipping, people cycle everywhere, no one uses an umbrella when it rains…those are the ones I remember.

I lived there for 20 years, and this is what I saw, spoiling a great land and normal people who were great.
I think someone told me that NZ has the same land mass as the UK with only 5+ million people. NZ coffee is superb 😋

47 yo NZer here watching for fun! 🌟🙏 Re. Birds. I've literally NEVER heard of this "favourite bird of the year competition"??! And only rarely have I seen a house ad referring to birds.
But since you mention it, birds (and a few lizards) are literally our only native land creatures and they're heavily protected. So i guess that's why there's so much emphasis on birds here 🦅🪶 I was waiting for you to mention the fact that we're called "kiwis" because of our national symbol... Also a bird 😅
And i must agree that Tūī is my fave bird too. The song is sooooo incredibly beautiful and their feathers are magnificent too 🖤💙 Ka kite anō, from Tauranga 💚
Having been to NZ five times I can relate to all these points. I love driving there done the Cape to Bluff and most places in between. The pies and coffee are good. I live in Shropshire and the two degrees of separation are much the same here.
Oh my goodness I had never put the 2 degrees phone network and 2 degrees of separation together. Haha and I’m with 2 degrees!! 😁 love your videos ❤

Heres my perspective coming from Canada and having lived here for a year in 2015-2016. Firstly I would do anything to come back here permanently. I absolutely love the culture, scenery and people it holds a place in my heart forever.
This is gonna vary greatly depending on where you come from but coming from Canada it can definitely feel like a step backwards. I was working for 55% of what I was used to making in Canada in the same profession. Stuff was also alot more expensive. As a NORMAL person in that 50-100k NZD yearly range it really can be quite difficult. Not sure how you'd save living here especially these days..
Hopefully I get the opportunity to return permanently one day people should just be aware its not all sunshine and rainbows. You definitely need to count every dollar you make.

I'm from Sri Lanka & I'm residing in Qatar currently. About the bill settlement after dining at a café, is somewhat similar to here as well. It's like an option here. If you request your bill, they will bring it to you. But, you could always walk up to the cashier and pay when ready to leave.

Against my better judgement I was addicted to Amazon in the UK. I’ve lived in New Zealand for 8 years now and LOVE that there is no Amazon here. My daughter in law in Canada can’t believe it and can’t understand how we survive without it! We can now order from Amazon in Australia but I haven’t and try to always buy from NZ retailers.
We love supporting local NZ businesses as well, but was definitely adjustment not being able to get same day delivery on basically anything you need/want! I think it helps us think about purchases a lot more though 😊
@@goodforgaia How true. It was a shock at first but now it stops my spending. I ask myself do I need it or do I just want it. Plus as you say things are expensive here so that’s a good thing.
Amazon used to be such a good company, unfortunately now for the most part it's a third party handler for Chinese garbage that sometimes takes over a month to just get out of China before it hits your country. Cheers from across the ditch.
I'm planning on relocating my family to Christchurch from the US (I'm hoping within the next couple of years) and the cheapest flight is $2,222 USD a ticket... Memphis to Dallas to Auckland is 16 hours. Then a 24 hour layover and a flight to Christchurch. My family consists of 5 people...

Stay in the USA ,New Zealand is going down the pan very fast .
The few people I ever see not wearing shoes are usually derros going into a pharmacy for their weekly fix. Up until now it's been Skechers have been the popular shoe but lately it has been little boots styles. Food being sold in servos reflects the "On the go" nature of the customer.

What’s the cost of living like in NZ compared to UK or Aus ? Also what’s the housing and job market like is it easy to find work and are rentals affordable?
There has been the largest ever migration of New Zealanders moving to Australia so I think that says a lot. Pay is significantly higher there and cost of living seems to be less. I think if you speak to most kiwis now they will tell you things are tough here, there is a cost of living crisis and salaries don't match up. Personally we have found it to be worse than the UK as houses here are also damp and cold, single glazed, mould problems, no central heating - a lot of things that we didn't experience in the UK. Everyone will have their own experience and opinion - this is just ours!

I wanted to try working in the Auckland casino after Sydney but the wages were poor and housing so expensive. I don't know how anyone could afford moving there.

I love meat pies. I miss it. There's nothing like it anywhere outside of NZ & Australia! So whenever we go back for vacay, that's the first thing I look for!

Going up to pay is what they do in Japan, and it's great. As you say you are not tied to the timing of a disengaged waiter... and also it is more discreet for hosting etc.

You have to go up to the till to pay for your food here in Australia too, it is not just New Zealand :)
I think a lot of these will apply to Australia as well! The two countries are very similar (but more different to the UK or US - at least we think so).
OK, we can't claim savory pies as a NZ thing, the UK is really the place of origin for meat pies as we know them, and they are as prevalent in Aussie as they are in NZ. Perhaps NZ has dialled it up to 11 on variety, but meat pies are ubiquitous over the ditch.
I think the paying at the counter thing at restaurants is partly because NZ had few real restaurants in the middle of last century and a lot of places were more like cafes with pay as you order. The New Zealand adopted electronic PIN entry card payment very early at about the time restaurant dining really started to become a thing. It became almost universal. The vast majority of people went straight from paying cash/cheque to paying by card using a PIN, and almost no one had a credit card where you sign. So in the days before wireless electronics everyone had to go to where the payment machine was to pay the bill, which was the reception area of the restaurant. Also it is good personal financial security to never let your cash / credit card out of your sight. So unless the wait staff brings a payment machine to your table you should always got to the reception area to settle the bill.
Sorry but I didn't see a single meat pie when we visited London. British cuisine is a disappointment!
Hi Greg, I experience the pie culture in the UK to be very different - it's more of a sit-down meal, rather than a takeaway on-the-go food like we have here. This video is also not aimed at Australians at all, our cultures are SO similar in so many ways (almost every way!). Thanks for your points on paying as well, I think a lot of tourists coming to NZ aren't aware they need to go up to pay after a meal - I experienced this a lot when I was younger and waitressing in New Zealand. Hello. You probably won't be able to answer my query. However, I'll still try. I am moving to NZ and it is really difficult to find out the actual cost of living. Will I be able to survive alone on around 3300 NZ monthly living in Christchurch? TIA!
Hi Jenaya, how exciting you’re moving to NZ! There’s a website called trademe.co.nz that has a property section- you can put in your budget and the area you want to live in and that will help give you an idea of what you can afford to rent. Food and general expenses will vary on your lifestyle, you check out 2degrees to get an idea of mobile phone and internet costs, and for power there are lots of choices but many do a free hour (so you can save money by doing laundry etc then). Not sure if that helps at all? I think in NZ the average salary is around 70-80k a year.
average wage spread is between 650nzd a week for a low paying job to around 850+nzd a week if your paid well.if you have a degreee from uni you can earn more.rents can take between 40% and 100% of your paycheck.petrol is currently 2.89nzd a litre for petrol, diesel is almost the same.its expensive to live just a basic life here.
at least half of that would go on just your rent, then you need food ,if you think you could survive on $100 a week then you might be lucky but be prepared to live like a pauper

Don't feel too bad about air fares out of NZ. You may have bought a return economy flight from UK to NZ for £600, but that must have been pre-pandemic. Now you're going to pay about £1,200 if you're lucky, or almost £3,000 if flying premium economy.
Wow that is a big jump! Even pre pandemic flights out of NZ were significantly more than the same flight in reverse. It’s definitely something we miss about living in London (also just so many more places you can fly direct to!). Hopefully they go back down from the UK 🤞 thanks for watching and letting us know about current prices 😊

"Kiwis just love birds sooo much", I hear this on all sorts of "what its like in NZ" videos. No one ever explains that NZ has no native mammals (accept bats. who are on the bird of the year list) and the annual competition for bird of the year is to highlight the ones struggling to survive and raise awareness for protected birds. That the number of native birds in urban areas is important because of many projects that have focused on brining native bird numbers back from scarcity. Not even good kiwis who actually understand it are explaining it on their vids. So now the world thinks NZ are just all round bird nutters instead of understanding that is about conservation and preservation of rare species.
Does it matter if the conservation work is not talked about? Kiwis do love birds, they are our 2 year olds favourite animal. Her favourite is a local cockatoo that lives in a tree near us, but she loves sparrows just as much - neither of these are native or linked to conservation work. We absolutely love all the natives around us, and every rental listing you read will mention if birds can be seen/heard from the property because it’s a selling point for a place. Our birds can thrive because of a lack of other animals/predators, but personally I don’t think that’s the point we are trying to make. There are lots of videos about conservation and NZ wildlife out there, and you can always make your own if you feel this is an important message to share! We don’t think saying “kiwis love birds” is a negative thing at all 😊
@@goodforgaia my point isn't a conservation one. Kiwis don't run bird of the year because they love birds. It's a publicity stunt to raise awareness, and real estate tricks don't define the mentality of a nation. It's a cutsy catch that all of the videos thay claim to show an inside look to nz use and its not accurate and paints us as a little simple. Show me a country thay hates the local bird life.

Especially the “classic sausage” on its own 🤷♀️ I’ve never seen a lone sausage snack in any other petrol stations 😂 where are you from? What kind of weird petrol station snacks do you have?
@@goodforgaia I'm an Aussie, across the water. The raw prawn thing was Aussie slang to give it away. I love our kiwi cuzzes to bits, but not as much as I love a good meat pie. Though them sausages looked dodgy, we get cranskys, so they are all wrapped up with cheese. You guys are great and I've subscribed.

For me the biggest thing is the weather - Scotland will be wet and cold and grey a lot of the year, whereas NZ has much better weather/shorter winter. This was our biggest factor! But from the UK you can travel to a lot more places (like Europe!). Hope that helps!

What’s wrong with eating a pie and a sausage when filling up with petrol.
I lived there for a year, got used to lots of their foibles. "Bring a plate" to a BBQ was a good one. It means bring food... not a plate. I struggled with the lack of proper ale so finished up drinking wine the whoie time.
Nice people but not sure I could live there forever. Wish they could sort out the difference between the i and e vowel sounds.

Expensive fuel? come back to the UK! £1.80 a litre over winter but it's started dropping, although the food here is so much cheaper than NZ.
We miss the UK! There is such good selection of supermarket to choose from (and so many food options at supermarkets), we basically only have two supermarkets here in NZ which means there’s no competition on food prices.. think petrol is expensive everywhere right now 🥺

What part of the country are you guys in, I see the North Island has been hammered, I come from Dunedin, apparently its completely the opposite down south, more like drought conditions.
We are in Auckland, it’s been pretty rough the last few weeks with flooding and now the cyclone. I think there was talk of Aldi coming to NZ - that would be so great but probably a long time before anything happens. I went to uni in Dunedin, I love it down there 🥰 where are you now?
@@goodforgaia I've lived here nearly 20 years, most of that was in Dorset but I got a new job which means I move every 6 months, currently near Edinburgh, but off to the Lakes District for the summer. Dunedin is great for uni but I don't miss the weather, although it seems to be turning on its head lately, good luck and stay safe up there.
You have made this video during the tail end of the covid pandemic. At the time most airlines are still not operating at pre-pandemic levels. Before covid it was possible to get return flights to the UK for 1200 bucks depending on the route. If you've been here 3 years you arrived pre covid during the time of cheap flights. There is no difference in cost of flights from NZ booked from anywhere in the world.

I have been living in NZ for a year now, the country has some amazing scenery. But the horrible cities, damp houses, cost of living, all the crime and gangs, the horrible roads, the polluted rivers and lakes in which you can't swim (and that is like 75% of all the lakes and rivers) is really really really bad. There is nothing pristine about NZ there is so much pollution. On top of that the pay is half of that of what I can earn in the Netherlands. I am deeply deeply deeply disappointed after 12 months in NZ I am going back to the Netherlands.
So brutally honest I love it. Kiwi here, born here 1976.

Most Kiwis wear shoes now but bare feet were very common back in the 80s. Even though NZ produces lots of its own food the best stuff gets exported overseas where it is cheaper to buy NZ foods overseas than in NZ. Kiwis get ripped off when it comes to foods produced in their own country. Air fares are a hell of a lot more expensive now prior to covid. NZ roads are bad and the standard of driving is even worse.

I remember this when living in London - NZ lamb was cheaper at the supermarket there than it is here!

For a country obsessed with competitiveness New Zealand has never really understood the concept of competition in business. Two corporations run all the supermarkets in NZ and they are screwing you! Here in the UK in the midst of a financial crisis we can still shop for a family of four for the equivalent of $150 a week
We stayed with a cousin in their lovely home (which was a duplex) and I remember lanolin and the lanolin smell in clothes, shampoo, hair. Everyone had a fish hook necklace too which was very popular then. And everyone was very athletic. They ate lots of disges with curry sauces yum!

We never give anyone our card either - not sure we understand your question? In other countries they bring the card machine to your table to pay, whereas in NZ you go up to the counter. Hope that clarifies 😊

Jeez you two need to come to Oz if you think pies and cafe quality coffee at petrol stations are unique to NZ. You might get an education.
We never said they are unique to NZ, and these are things that are really different to the UK where we lived before and to USA (for example). Also different to most of the places in Asia we’ve been. You need an education if you think Australia is the only other country in the world 😂😂 thanks for watching

Everything expensive
Horrendous traffic
No public parking
Very Expensive restaurants.Living on hill slopes like the Favelas in Brazil
Rip Off Taxis and Ubers.
Chinese owned souveniour stores scalping peoples pockets.
Very Expensive Milford Sound Cruises and helicopters.
Barren dry landscape.
Very narrow highways.
Real Estate nothing less the a million for a shack
Queenstown is very different to the rest of New Zealand - it's very touristy. But personally I think its beautiful 😍

Sorry Kiwi gentlemen bros and lady bros, not wearing shoes in public, lots of food in petrol stations (pies etc) and loving birds aren't unique to NZ. We have Bird of the Year in Australia, the pie is the national dish and RUclips s full of videos talking about Aussies not wearing shoes.
Guess that’s why people often say Australia and NZ are so similar! I would be very surprised if any aussies were shocked by these things 😉
Really strange that a Brit is complaining about food in NZ. Cus as a Kiwi who's been in the uk for six years I can say hands down the food here is the worst on the planet.
I actually agree with you - but it is nice being able to get any food you want year round (not seasonal) and for the same price! But there are cons to that too..! I was in London for 8 years and miss it heaps actually, hope you're loving it!
