I have a lot of admiration for Paul McGrath. It is refreshing to listen to someone who takes responsibilities for their own actions. Brilliant player and a good man.
Couldn`t agree with you more but honestly gutted Sir Alex sold him to Villa . It was very much their gain and our loss at the time but the rest is history. Paul will always be my all time best and favourite United centrehalf. Oo Ah Paul McGrath. MUMUFMUFC OK✊💓🤍🖤🟢🟡

My Dad Said Paul McGrath on his day was the best centre half he ever saw that's good enough for me . He was the reason Ian Rush rarely scored in all his games against United .
Got to hand it to him,he knew he was in the wrong and that AF was doing the best for the club.PM was a class player and he’s took that decision on the chin and admitted AF was right,so all credit to him for saying so
Speaking as guy from Dublin, being a Bohs and Leeds fan , I know lads , we all have our crosses to bare but I saw him play for St Patrick's Athletic v Bohs, early 80s , he was brilliant , also went to his game for Utd v St Patrick's Athletic at Dalymount Park , Dublin , this was like a part payment for him by Big Ron , they brought Utd over with all proceeds , gate receipts etc , going to Pat's. Obviously being Irish , got to see him many times for Us and was brilliant but he broke my heart in the 1996 , League Cup final , Leeds v Villa , 3-0 for them but we had 1 of the Best Strikers in the Premier League then , Tony Yeboah , Paul never gave him a kick , had him in his pocket the whole game . What a Player and such a humble Man , keep well Big Fella 👍
Even better for Villa than he was for Man Utd, and half the time he couldn't even train because of his knees - fantastic player. Reminds me a bit of Ledley King in that regard, but King, great that he was, wasn't close.
Before a qualifying match, the Ireland squad were going on a night out to a concert.Big Paul refused to go,as the temptation to drink was too strong.McCarthy marched up to his room and demanded that he came out.McGrath ended up pissed out of his head, and McCarthy took him out of the team, effectively ending his Irish career. We all know how he pretty much ended Keane's Irish career, but he also dropped Denis Irwin, saying he "needed to prove himself" ,Irwin retired soon after. McCarthy should never be forgiven for any of that.Absolutely dog shit man management, that stinks of bitter jealousy.
Such a humble man, many modern footballers could learn a thing or two from him about accepting responsibility.....even when voted the best player in the PL, first time a defender won it, and puts the focus on Villa players and staff but not himself!
My one and only footballing hero. Greatest centre half in the world. Loved watching him play for my beloved Villa. Greatest player to ever wear the Villa shirt. Still God at Villa park. Rep of Ireland legend. If you have not read his book, Back from the Brink,do. Fantastic read😀👍💜💙
What a player and what a man. Admittedly, a good chunk of my affection for him is because he was one of the players my grandad really liked and admired. So I was brought into the Paul McGrath appreciation society by indoctrination; atleast to start with. But what a player he was. Oh ah Paul McGrath, I said Oh Ah Paul McGrath

A good honest man. Fergie had just left a club that had an outstanding central defence and he probably struggled with what he was seeing. McGrath was a great player and Fergie could have used him.
Would have got 400+ caps in the red jersey without his problems, no question. When you think of the great centre halves that Man U have had over the years, McGrath should be at the top of the list
Anyone wondering…. Check out 34 year old Paul McGrath not giving Baggio a sniff in the World Cup opener in Orlando 1994. Bear in mind, the heat was cruel and Baggio was at the absolute peak of his powers.
For those who don’t remember Paul. He was world class. Played at the back and more than capable midfielder. A rolls Royce of a footballer. And Norman Whiteside in my opinion was world class. At 16 he was bullying players like Tony Adam’s. Power & left foot was unreal. Injury stifled his career but two worldly class players. Fergie made a mistake when he sold them I thought. Paul went on to Villa and was class, Norman went on to Everton but didn’t really play because of injury. A footballing shame.
Aye Big Norm was amazing, as was Paul. Both players would've been world class but for the old drink and injury. [EDIT] Actually it could easily be argued that Paul in particular was still world class despite drink and injury.
