Tell your son to look in to a Tune like KDMAX 🤙🏽
I’d rather have a Scotty slip of the tongue than a slipping tranny.
i like drum brakes. they aren't exposed to the elements. i rarely use the brakes, except at the "end" of a stop. i downshift in my standard, and "glide" to the stop light in the automatics. no hurry....
Get it on the stream and it will update the trans and smoothe it out if it's used
I can remember in the 1970's when we called Toyotas rice burners. The Kubota tractors were also thought to be junk. Years later when they were still running, people started realizing they lasted longer than American made tractors.
Oops by golly wow Pa
Yes, I noticed that. I ran a little Kubota, mowing. It would heat up, being worked hard. Stop and rev and it cooled down and kept working. Cooled down, quickly, too.🤣👌
@Thor Cleavelandson Still do
@Thor Cleavelandson now it’s more expensive than a ford lol 😂

Brand new 2003 Tacoma.
Cherry 🍒 bro
I bought a 2021 Tacoma SR5 4 door V6 with the 6 foot bed. The first thing I noticed about the truck was the ride quality. It rides smooth as silk, no road noise...a really comfortable truck. It has all the bells and whistles on it (that I actually want), and it will tow a boat or a small camper trailer with no problem. I am now 63 years old, and I doubt seriously that I will ever have to buy another truck.
And how much did that cost? 60k These new trucks nowadays are a fortune
don’t jix yourself now lol
@@brianpacheco1927I just got a 2022 Tacoma SR5 with just over 10k miles for $36k.
@@Berserker_4517 For a midsize truck, that's expensive.
@@lynch42o it’s the cheapest with the fewest amount of miles I could find this year.
Drove my 2020 trd sport taco from California to Virginia this summer in 5 days through valleys, mountains, flash floods, desert no problem. Son bought a quality truck
I bought a 2nd gen 2008 tacoma TRD 4 door last May for $11,000 with 106k miles on it at an auction. After watching your videos over the years I just felt your an honest guy who’s knows his stuff, you have a lot of good to say about Toyota. It now has 128k as my daily driver and I’ll never get rid of this truck. Gas mileage isn’t great, but this a truck and I’d trust it to get me down any road. It’s black and it’s still a good looking truck with some minor cosmetic mods and a fresh wash people have thought it was a newer model.
not a bad price. if it's a manual tranny, even better. if not... bleh
I have the ‘05, 4.0 217,000 and runs perfect and burns no oil. Simple, dependable well engineered truck, best I’ve owned.

My 2009 Prerunner SR5 Tacoma has the same sticker. The paint, interior, and mechanics are still in phenomenal shape. 140K miles. Not even broken in yet!
Bought my first Tacoma last week, 2023, and I love it. HOWEVER, the auto tranny is a little wonky in my opinion. I wish I could actually find a manual tranny in VT but it’s like finding a unicorn
I had one like this instead mine came with the TRD Off Road package. I know actually what Scotty was talking about when he said how the gears kept switching. Once you start using the truck long enough, you will know how to fix that issue easily. The gears switching occur more when you uphill because it requires more power. What I did was I switch it to sport mode and leave it in 3rd gear or 4th gear depending on how fast I am going. This avoids the gears to switch back and forth. The only reason I sold my truck was because I needed a bigger truck to tow my trailer. Other then that, it was the best off road truck I've ever driven.
So you manually control the automatic. Lmao
Yes! Newer Toyotas and some other trucks have an automatic transmission that you can shift manually. Awesome for driving in the mountains, snow, ice, and some towing applications. Pawpaw, your gonna be amazed what they’ve done with trucks lately; when you finally trade in that 94’ Silverado.@@GoatOrange

SEND IT with a 6 speed auto ..my camry had the u760e , I had to let off then go merging from 45-75 in shift 3 and if you jack rabbit 🐇 it , it slows down a lot into 2nd , darn auto tranny!! Otherwise the 2.5 had 240 hp on E85 and bolt ns to 0-60 in 6.2 seconds since 0-40 takes 2.2 seconds easing into the automatic

Looks like real gauges, cable park brake and no cyl deactivate
Nice truck.
That transmission "Gear Hunt" is solved with aftermarket tune. I've got Valley runner tune-it is like driving car with different transmission. Engine response is sharper.
Where would you get this done at?
@@JC-ep4hb Local man did it for me.He is near Philadelphia PA.
The ovtune?
Great little review Scotty. Thanks! BTW, 3rd generation "gear hunting" can be eliminated with a performance tune. Had the OTT performance tune done on our TRD Off Road 4x4 V6 automatic a couple of weeks ago and it shifts perfectly, not to mention immediately improved throttle response and even better acceleration when ECT is engaged. No effect on mileage either. Best money I've ever spent. Now it runs the way it should have from the factory. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
I don't have any 'gear hunting' in my 3rd Gen Tacoma.
Manual transmission sill available.
What year is your tacoma? Thanks.

It's an adaptive transmission so it'll smooth out the more you drive it. I noticed a big difference around 5500 miles. Now at 15k I have virtually no issues.
I also noticed mine smoothing out on my 22 tacoma now at 3k miles it was super jumpy up to 2k miles It also helps to try and drive kinda progressive or constant pressure on the pedal.
Man , I hope mine does !! I'm at about 1,350 and it seems the same to me :D

No way mexican workers would work for $7 a day...gimme a break.
@@jyee2217 this is true. I worked for a company that had a division in Mexico and they did make that little!!!! Company I worked for was Onvio.
I have a 2019 Tacoma Sport MT bought new. Has almost 70,000 miles. So far the truck has been bulletproof. Zero issues. Of course real world driving 75 to 80 mph on the highway delivers about 19 mpg. Still not bad for a truck this size.
Traded my 2017 Tacoma for a 2019 F150. Mainly because the dumb transmission. I get better mpgs in a full size truck. Plus, they were the same price. I'm interested in what Toyota will do with the 4th Gen. I loved it, just didn't offer that much compared to others. Would go back, if the 4th Gen is better.
I would like to have 19mpg, I get around 13mpgs at 80mpg but it could get better if I drive farther
My 2006 lbz duramax lifted with 33s gets 19mpg on freeway lol
My 2001 Lexus weighs 5,000 pounds and gets 16.4 mpg lol
I think that is just the average though.
2021 TRD OR 4x4 owner. Love it. I like the transmission. I’m not sure what folks are talking about. The transmission likes to keep the RPMs as low as possible for fuel economy. So that means it likes to upshift earlier than folks might expect. Another huge benefit is low RPMs keep the engine running for many years. Less stress.
Same. From the way people talk about these transmissions you'd think they constantly jump all over the place hunting gears but its not bad at all. Much better than the 8 speed in the JL Wrangler, now that's an annoying tranny.
The 4 cyl is much easier to work on though. There’s a lot of room in the engine bay 😆
There's nothing to work on
But it gets worse fuel economy overall due to the V6 having the ability to go into Atkinson cycle as well as dual injection
4cyl is a total joke in a Tacoma.
I was on the fence between the 4 and 6 cylinder abs wound up going with the 6 for the reasons Scotty said. I’m really happy with the truck and I’ve owned several Toyota trucks in the past.
So why would Scotty be pissed
Why would you even consider a 4 banger in a truck? 🤔

My Tacoma was built in Mexico and has been perfect for 2.5 yrs. Nothing wrong with building them there as Toyota runs a tight ship.
Unfortunately, I am not convinced Toyota is anymore reliable. Ford seems to be putting out the best trucks at the moment. More power, towing, features, even in the midsize.
@@Calebflying2025
When they start making Ford Trucks and the components last longer than 160k then you can start bragging about your Ford.
Things like front end components, alternators, starters, fuel pumps etc,etc are way to short lived for me to consider reliable. My uncles starter just went out at 63k on his 2017. 63k and already major issues.
@@paulcoenen7918 None of the manufactures reliability is as good as it was 20 years ago. The issues are due to electrical components, and cheaper parts. Where did a 160k come from lol. I have the 2021 four door long bed. Army green. I love it. feel like your going pretty easy on toyota .... i bought one of these and there are no clues that demonstrate toyota knew what they were doing when designing/building it. ..... since you brought it up -the trans is easily the worse trans I have ever experienced.... the shifting is absolutely all over the place -100% more than this video would lead you to believe
I have a 2020 TRD Off-Road 4x4. Everything said about the transmission is absolutely valid. Me personally I do like the tighter transmission feel, so it does annoy me, however the good outweighs the bad overall. Yes it is outdated compared to other vehicles currently. But, is that always a bad thing? The current tech in the Tacoma is proven and it will last a long time. It is not your typical futuristic truck loaded with tech and there is a very certain market for a Tacoma.
Update: still have my Tacoma and I love it! The transmission improves over time as you drive it so I’m very happy to say it’s way better! In love with this truck and very happy with it.
I own 2 toyotas. The newer of the two is a 2000. Even the outdated tech of a new taco is more tech than I want.
I have a 21 manual and I absolutely love it
I tried to buy one last year. On the test drive, the trans was god awful. It wouldn’t find a gear at 60mph on cruise. The seats were uncomfortable. I left disappointed, and decided to try a new ranger on the way home. It was so much better I can’t even compare the two. I bought the 2021 ranger and have loved it ever since. 20k miles of smiles
Love my 21 4runner TRD OffRoad Premium for that very reason. Its a slug, and does not get the greatest gas mileage, but man it is well built. I love it!

Congrats to your son Scotty, Scotty, no need to worry, your son bought a very reliable, Badass vehicle, that will last well over 20 years. I remember years ago, we lived across the street from a church, and during the winter up here in Rhode Island, the church folks hired a snow removal company, and the guy that showed up, had this very rusty all over Toyota Tacoma with a snow plow on it, and that thing ripped through that over 1 ft of snow that morning with ease, and he did my sidewalk too for free, that was cool dude.

I have a very hard time believing that truck gets 24mpg, even at 55. Thats sounds like a reading from the monitoring system in the truck, and those numbers are usually a few mpg optimistic.
I've got a 2016 taco. I usually calculate mpg by dividing the mile on the odometer over the number of gallons i pump in at a gas station. If im being very fuel conscious on the highway, I can get about 22mpg maintaining 80 mph. 20 in the city.
I have a 2022 SR5 4X4 and it’ll get 24-26 at 60-70 mph

I bought a Toyota 4 cly, standard shift, 4 wheel drive back in 1983. Loved that truck. Great gas mileage. It was a small LIGHT WEIGHT truck. Prefect.
I towed a small pop-up camper (Apache ?) all over the west and down the west coast. Paralleled parked (with the camper in tow) on a San Francisco street.
What a great truck. My friends liked it (sexy design compared to U.S. designs.). Shinny black. My 6 foot friend bought one, and it was fun watching him get in/out of the truck. Never had a problem except a frozen emergency brake (I discovered in San Francisco) because I never used it before.....
The truck bed rusted out because I think it was an aftermarket put on after it was shipped here, to avoid import duty taxes that Reagan imposed on Toyota and Honda.
I have an ‘18 Taco and he’s so right about the automatic tranny. I couldn’t find one with a standard so I settled and it’s extremely slow with shifts. I drive mine in manual most of the time but especially when I’m towing something. If you care about shifting absolutely go with a standard like the man says!
Somebody had mentioned a software update. But I'm wondering if there is a type of shift kit that could be put in it like the old Transmissions.
Push the ECT button. That will let it rev more and will tighten up the shifts. The trans is geared towards good mileage which is why it shifts like it does. The ECT button will give you what your lookin for but at the cost of more pain at the pump
It’s also worth telling you your not getting a manual trans unless your buying a TRD pro or some other model that’s pushing 50k
@@matthewcaughey8898 I get why it’s slow to shift but even with the ECT PWR on the shifts are unpredictable and just strange. This isn’t a problem I’ve had on a lot of other automatic transmissions, just my taco. Should be known that they only starting tying the manual transmission with TRD in very recent history. There are still standard 3rd gens you can buy used without all the bells and whistles.
@@hrettbollis2464 they weren’t easy to find when they were new. Now? It’s even harder to find one
It’s funny how little the Taco has changed from my 03 tundra besides the obvious things like a 4.7 v8 and the 15ish mpg. The fan almost look identical.
I had the ‘03 Tundra with the 4.7 engine also and the crappy gas mileage but loved the truck and the power. Friday the 13th of September 2019 changed all of that at a street light when a full sized work van pulled out in front of me and I plowed into the right front of the van at 45mph. Totaled both vehicles but the Tundra still started afterwards. All 4 doors still opened fully without any binding. Bought a 2019 Tacoma 3.5 Sport as a replacement. Other than lack of power compared to the Tundra, I love the gas mileage. I get anywhere from 17-26 depending on the terrain and traffic. Not a bad trade off in my opinion. Toyotas are built to keep you safe.
Its a adaptive transmission, it learns how you drive, if you wanted you can plug in a scan tool and reset it, it fix’s the gear shifting
I just picked up a v6 manual trans off road trim tacoma this week and it drives like a dream! I'm excited to have it for years.
My 2018 Tacoma was build in Texas and has given me zero problems after 60,000 miles. It has the bullet proof 4 cylinder engine. I get 25 - 26 mpg driving mainly rural roads. Mobil 1 every 5000 miles. I plan on driving it until it rusts apart and devolves into the ground. 😂
I recently took a 600-mile trip in a similar Tacoma model, and I have one complaint. That is that the seat height from the floor is lower than most other vehicles I have driven. I am 6ft tall and because of that short distance my legs, hips, and lower back were in pain by the end of the trip.
yes! You can get seat jackers from "desert does it" that supposedly fixes this. I'm going to try it.
I’m 6ft too, one thing I do when I take a long road trip in mine is by having the seat all the back and down, and then lean the torso part back a little with no lumbar support. With that I haven’t had issues, but everyone’s body is built different tho. Goodluck man
The Tacoma is not for tall people. I'm 6'3" and I do not fit comfortably. I threw my back out contorting to get in the thing and seat height is too low. Raising the seat would put my head through the roof, I went with the f150 and love it almost as much as Tacoma owners love their trucks.
@@snjrdn get the seat jackers! Makes the view way better in my 2022. different levels for height.
Truck is setup like a car. Sitting in it feels exactly like sitting in a car lol. So many people with this "I am tall, I can't fit" crap.
Those 6 speed automatics are a real pain in fast food drive throughs. They tend to jump from from idle to 900 rpm causing the vehicle to lurch slightly. It just leaves you feeling disconnected from it. I even had mine reprogrammed.
It's the same for the current generation Hilux eventually you get use to it
Don't eat that crap~!
Stay the hell out of the fast food drive throughs it's killing you and your truck!
Yup! get out and stretch those legs and ba**s(its good for ya) to get something out and let the taco be for a moment.
I noticed that going into reverse when parking sometimes, it wants to lunge back.

I have a 2019 TRD sport around 29k miles and I have consistently seen 25 mpg on the highway driving anywhere from 65-75 mph. Only complaints with this vehicle is the paint quality and I had a ball joint/control arm replacement under warranty (assembled in Mexico just like this one)
Yeah the paint quality is so bad, I was honestly horrified. I think most colors it's still a single stage paint, meaning they mix the clear in with the paint vs adding additional layers of clear. But whatever, years down the road I'll probably do a respray
Hey Scotty the TRD Sport is geared to on road whereas the TRD Off Road is geared towards Off Road with a rear diff locker and MTS (multi terrain select) and Crawl Control. The shock valving is also different (shocks might be as well).
Was at the Toyota dealer in 2018. New Tacoma TRD was stickered at $37,995.
$46,000 in summer 2022.
My brothers 2015 Tacoma bought new is almost at 100k miles he uses it Monday thru Friday. Never had any problem with the truck
Scotty if u had a production company would u rather pay 20 n hour to each worker or 5 dollars and hour. It is what it is
All the knowledge I have gained from scotty's videos I pass along and people ask me how you know so much about cars. I just laugh and mention scotty Kilmer..then i hear who..
Ain’t that the truth!
Imagine he just started recording without his son knowing he’s recording his truck
Awesome video - Classic Scotty style. All the most relevant info covered, succinctly and logically. Love it - keep on revving
Love the pics with his comments, ie..."Got take your top off before you throw your beer cans out the back window into the bed !" LOL!
I'm in love with the newer Nissan Frontier and my parents are getting a new vehicle in a year or two I hope they get that one.
Owned 6 tacomas along with several other Toyotas. Reliability is simply amazing. My current 2018 is a great truck, but I miss my 2014 every day. Smoother and more power. Prolly going to have to grab a new one next year before they mess it up even more with the turbo charged 4 banger. We picked up a 2022 4runner this year to stay ahead of it for a few years. Too bad Toyota messed the new tundras up so bad.
Hasn’t been out long enough yet to make that determination. If there are some shortcomings, Toyota will fix it. Give it a chance. 2016 Tacoma TRD off road dc here.
Everytime a new version comes out on any vehicle there is problems I got the 21 trd offroad, was told that's the last year assembled in America? Going to Mexico in 22 version. 36, 500
Imagine the new tacoma with the 4.6 v8? That'll never happen unfortunately
@TXlowlifeTXI'm seeing some used ones for around and under 32k... Is that too much?
"Windows open in the back so you throw beer cans in the back" 🤣🤣
I have a 2019 TRD Sport 4x4 and I’m absolutely loving it, bought it in 2021 just above 22k miles and it’s at 55k in less than 2 years 😅 it’s definitely a moneypit, i’ve put in alittle over 8k already just in mods and i don’t see me stopping for awhile, planning to turbo it in the next few months 🤙🏽
The taco isn’t a money put…you are 😂
I have a 2020 Tacoma trd off road, I love it I bought it brand new in 2020 and have put 92000 miles on it, I’ve had zero issues with it other than 2 flat tires lol I never worry about my vehicle breaking down and pretty confident in it, I also live out in the country and off road a lot. My only complaint is the interior space but it’s not a big deal I would also like a little more bells and whistles inside but it’s whatever , I love it
I bought my 2020 Tacoma TRD Sport mainly because of you incessant praise of Toyota's. No regrets.
I have the exact same truck but 2019 with 60k. Love it.
Imagine buying a car with Scotty and he starts talking to you like if he’s making a RUclips video 😂
Last week I went to a toyota dealership to try to trade in my Ram 1500 for a 4 cylinder SR5 4 door tacoma with 30,000 miles used, and they were wanting $32,000 for the truck, and only wanted to give me 9,000 for my 2017 Ram 1500.... I immediately walked out.
Lol $9k for the Ram? Wow, you must have alot of miles on it.
@@FrameRot 96k miles.
@@Oakshang damn you were gonna get screwed
@@FrameRot 96k miles, crew cab, big horn, good condition..no issues, and were wanting to give me 9k...are you fkn kidding me? I wanted to laugh at the sales manager.
@@Oakshang should have
Sweet ride! 💕🤙
I have a 2014 Reg Cab 4x4 aka. "The Slug"....just now turning 100k best vehicle I've ever owned. 2.7 4banger auto 4 speed I get 21mph on highway. No issues just regular service and replaced tires once.
I had 2 tacomas - put together in Mexico n never had problems. The 1st one after a year I gave it to my 1st son. Then the 2nd tacoma TRD SPORTS I gave it to my 2nd son.
I MISSED THE TACOMA SO MUCH - I ORDERED 2022 4X4 6CYL TRD OFFROAD .
Nothing wrong assembled in Mexico. The quality control is japanese
Mine was made in Mexico. It’s a 2009. Nothing new
Scotty! Would you consider making a video on the 2022 Toyota GR86? Your overall thoughts and opinion on it considering it’s history, progression, and competition in the affordable sports car space. You are killin it!
A Google search would've gave u that answer lol it's a 86 you're either a beginner driver or looking for something slow and can handle a turn lol still doesn't have enough hp or tq to compete against the other sports car but it can still make a turn lol that sums up a 86, get something else if u wanna go fast 🤣
Have a great weekend scotty 😀
thanks you too!
I traded my 2015 GMC Sierra 2 years ago for 2020 Tacoma TRD sport 4x4 in Cement Gray. Loving it.
I bought the 2022 SR5 4 Door V6 4x4 , happy so far , Now at 11,000 miles..It does have a bad hood fender alignment and the plastic on the steering wheel is creaky..you can definitely hear the timing chain..
Can't wait for Scotty to review the 2023 hybrid Tacoma when it comes out. I know he's not a fan of hybrids, but I know he'll shoot straight about the test driving experience.
Same. I’m waiting to see the new design and variants before I get my next vehicle. And for Scotty’s reviews!
Great to see your input on the tacoma!
I have a 2020 sr5 tacoma, I love it. It runs like a dream, and I never find the transmission to be clunky at all.
Just like Mexican food, they just chuck it together, he should listen to Scotty and grab a bargain, not shell out thousands of dollars on a vehicle that only goes down in value in each passing day
I have a 2017 Tacoma with the V6 (same generation). It is true you can beat the EPA highway estimates in that 50-65 range. However it quickly drops of when you go faster. Our interstates in my state are 80mph and going 85 I get around 12 and going 80 just 14. However when sticking to two lane highways with reduced speed limits I've seen as high as 26.
Can’t relate any more
I wanna see Scotty's reaction when he say's it's a Toyota or Honda of course it's gonna start right up, and then it doesn't start up.
RIP Abe. Japan is awesome! love the place!
100% correct on the MPG. I just traded my 2020 2.7 ACab for 2023 trd sport 4dr SB. The 2.7 bulletproof hated the highway & hills/grades. The 3.5 is outstanding on highway. Little less intown... Enjoy you Taco
I just bought a 22 Tacoma and I love it
That looks almost identical to my 2017 TRD sport, the only thing missing is the clutch pedal and the lane assist pieces. I only get about 21 mpg with mine but in central New York the hills help keep it lower.
I put a craven exhaust on my 21 off road manual. And boy it sure is hard to get good milage listening to that awesome sound!!!
I have the 2.7 5speed manual 4x4. I get over 20mpg in town and 24 on the highway. My co worker has a v6 and only gets 17mpg in town. The 4 banger does lack power though. I’ve beat a few bicycles with it.
😂😂
Some of those bikes are fast.
I got the same Toyota as this video.I’m getting 15.7 mpg
@@derekarmy2047 Yea it’s a shame they advertised it as more fuel efficient than the 2.7 when new.
I had a 2014 Tacoma with the 2.7 but it also had the 4 speed auto.. that transmission made the power feel even worse. Probably wouldn't be so bad with the new 6A
“Remember to remove your top” Scotty Kilmer 2022.
Transmission never smooths out..had it flashed twice. Wait til you get some miles on it...problem 1...the plastic coolant bypass on the rear of the motor $2kish...problem 2...timing cover leak...$3-4kish...both easier to pull motor out or take cab off. Way to go toyota.
I really don’t know by now what really make you happy anymore Scotty you always changing
My Dream truck! Love Tacomas. One of these days I’ll be able to comfortably afford one.
Great video Scotty👍🏾👍🏾
Didn't his son buy a pickup truck 3 years ago
He’s an endless money pit
@@bourboncat9229 😅😅😅😅
@@bourboncat9229 probably buys a new Toyota pickup every 3 years
@@scaldon2 yeah he does and his grandson neglects maintenance too on the cars despite having Scotty as his grandpa! Looks like Scotty’s boys are ur average Americans use and abuse then junk em
That's the way the world works. The person getting screwed is the worker making $6 a day or whatever it is. The crazy part is that these trucks are STILL WAY OVER PRICED. So yeah. It is what it is. I have family members in Central America making that kind of money. $100 per month making pants (Levis that sell for $50 or more here in the US). The kicker is that the owners of those companies are Chinese nationals. Like always, someone getting screwed over.
got mine in 2020 basically the same except extended cab and manual trans i love it
Just bought one. Scotty, I might have served with your son at Campbell, I was in the 101 CAB 2007-2013 x3 combat tours.
Nothing wrong with it being assembled in Mexico 🇲🇽
cheap labor. More $$ for the big-wigs
Not from a quality point of view but from a capitalistic point of view that makes the rich richer
Yes the pay. $25 an hour if build in America
@@marilynh5487 Predatory capitalism. There need to be laws against this sort of thing. These cars are only affordable for average lower, middle-class Joes used
@@numbredheart Globalization is what you're referring to, not Capitalism.
Scotty gets pissed several times a day 😂😂😂
I love the 4x4 Toyotas, 1st, and 2nd gen Tacomas. I like some of the 3rd gens, but it's hard to beat an older one.
I bought a 2021 Tacoma TRD Pro. V6. At first I was upset cause of horrible gas mile and it always hunting for the right gear. Well after a a year and a half I’m averaging about 22 miles per gallon on the freeway, driving conservatively. I like my truck and all of the modifications you can do to it. Let the modification Begin!!!!
Wow Scotty, it seems you like the new Tacoma V6 (lol). I wouldn't personally care if the transmission slipped a little, as long as it held up.
