Yup! Late to the party but I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment: Deore if you want best value for money. XT if you want the best performance. SLX is kind of irrelevant since Deore exists and XTR is for those of you who hate money and want to burn it. 😁 But yeah: XT shifter is probably the most impactful upgrade you can make to your shifting.
I got a merrida e160 with shimano ep8 motor , it come with 11 speed deore but that cassette and chain wore out pretty quickly . Been on shimano xt 11 speed linkglide for around 1000kms now , super durable and never missed a shift . Plus I think 11 speed is enough range. I have xt 12 speed on my norco sight yet has missed shifts and isn't as durable though has more instant gear changes ,I'll be swapping it over to 11 speed xt linkglide soon . My point is its hard to no recommend shimano xt 11 speed linkglide for majority of mountain bikers though shifting is tiniest bit slower so for everyone it's amazing value except for top tier pro riders needing faster gear changes . Also on a side note my opinion is 11 speed is enough . 12 speed is great but does not have the durability of a more robust 11 speed and I think its pure marketing . No doubt there will be 13 speed etc etc ,shit be getting even thinner to fit and even less durable . Don't get caught up in the hype and if get the opportunity with 11 speed xt linkglide do yourself the favour and try it out , it truly is amazing and you will love it and the value in it .
slx derailleur and xt shifter is the best combination possible. You could get the xt jockey wheels with sealed bearings for less than $20 extra and it will be basically the same as the XT.
financial this doesn't make sense, because you can often get it cheaper with a real XT. The only thing that really makes sense, especially with an ebike, imo Deore cassette XT derailleur & shifter XTR chain The best performance and at the same time the cheapest combination in the long run. Because the cassette and chain last longer than their counterparts in the other groups.
My first bike had SRAM and as I keep building bikes it’s been SRAM on them to keep all my extra wheel sets aligned, but those little details you point out would be sooo nice for working on my bikes. In hindsight I would go Shimano. I do swap out for XT brakes because I love that lever feel 😂
I was always a big SRAM guy but recently made the switch to shimano. I think SRAM definitely has the edge on electronic shifting, but for mechanical Shimano has them beat in my opinion, especially at the lower price end
Deore here, had SLX before for a bit. To be honest I can't really tell the difference. Solid, reliable and should take plenty of use. The cost was good and it shifts smooth. I can see why you would rate this one the winner overall, especially in everyday use where speed doesn't matter.
Six months late, and out of the running for the prize, but I do want to name my childhood inspiration for two wheeled daredevilry, and that inspiration was…Evil Knievel.
At this point in time, comparing MTB drivetrains ought to include Linkglide. It's was a huge improvement for my emtb - it shifts well and it just keeps on working.
Is M6100 cassette really the same as M7100+ except being full steel/heavier? Or is it the same as with chain where M9100 is the best since it provides all coatings/tech which makes it last longer than XT and below (and although most expensive is cheaper in the long run).
I currently run Deore Cassette & Chain and XT shifter and derailleur. The double shift is life changing....
It really is! It’s what finally convinced me to make the switch from SRAM to Shimano on my mountain bikes!

Glad to hear I’m not just crazy 😅
I run an SLX cassette, Deore derailleur, shifter and chain. I have an SLX chain and XT shifter in the drawer to install soon :)
Nice! You’ll love that XT shifter!!

Good advice!

I sadly haven’t gotten a chance to spend any time on it, but I’m really looking forward to getting a bike in to review that’s speced with it!
Totally agree , it's hard to beat . Amazing performance and durability and good value .

I'll rock the Deore for the price alone. It's cheaper to replace it if it broke
Definitely, especially the derailleur!
You guys are good, i have deore cassette slx rear mech and xt shifter but have all the parts there to upgrade to xt even the rotors
Nice, I’m sure you’ll love that 👌👌
Too bad I don't have an IG and refuse to create one.
Altus, Acera, Alivio : we are no longer considered.

Good question! Yes, I to my knowledge it's just material differences that translate to weight savings, not shifting performance
I missed the give away :(
Wish Shimano would make an XTR cassette with ALL cogs being titanium. Seems like they kinda cheaped out there.
No optical gear display on the shifter and also uglyness of the derailleur makes it a no for me. I will stick to my good old deore XT 780
The lack of an electronic option for Shimano eliminates it for me. Mechanical shifting is so old school now.
They make electronic shifting, we just didn’t include it in this review. They call it Di2
I need this on R M fusion much better than the Advent I'm running now
I actually don’t mind the Advent X drivetrain!
