    Hi, physicist/teacher here. I really enjoyed this, thanks! Your comments on learning, understanding and teaching are right on point. I have the great good fortune to do most of my teaching one-on-one with grad students, and I tell them that I never really understand something myself until I hear myself explain it to somebody else- and, really, to multiple others! That's because everyone comes at a particular subject from a different angle, and the more angles and questions you encounter, the deeper your own understanding becomes. This is maybe especially true of physics because there are almost always multiple complementary ways of looking at any given subject, and a proper physics education returns to a subject several times over years, each time at a deeper level of sophistication and connection with other areas.

    Learning to teach from experience is so true. I'm a tutor, not a teacher, but almost all my teaching skills come from experience. When I was first hired as a stat tutor at my school I wasn't given an training ahead of time -- they just gave me shifts in the tutoring center and I learned as I went along, and a little from observing tutoring sessions with the more experienced tutors. I will say that tutoring forced me to learn the subjects themselves really well. I started out not really caring for stats very much because I didn't have that great of a grasp of it - I could tutor the basics but that was it. But after spending years explaining the same basic concepts over and over again, I gained an understanding of them on a much deeper level and it sparked an interest in learning more. Probability used to be one of my least favorite things, but now it's one of my favorites.

    I would love a video where Emily is explaining something about biology to you, similarly to the videos where you're talking with her (and us) about physics.
    My question for Emily would be:
    Are there things about biology that we'll never know, or is it all knowable, learnable, given enough research?

  • @Ramon314
    @Ramon314 3 года назад +1

    Explaining things is definitely the best way of learning. I used to explain the class I was in maths the easy way (because my teachers often explain maths in a very difficult way) and I discovered that I really perfected my math skills that way. About the same things happened with physics.

    Whether doing the reading is actually helpful really depends on the textbook. Some textbooks are just really poorly written and just make things more confusing. I often find it more effective to just make note of the topics covered and find better explanations online. Heck, it's often Nick's videos that take the place of the reading for me because he just does a _much_ better job actually explaining stuff than the book. Professor Dave Explains and Crash Course are also really effective for that purpose. Even Wikipedia is helpful sometimes.

    • @NickLucid
      @NickLucid  3 года назад +4

      That works too! 👍 Whatever makes you more prepared to ask questions during class.

    • @Lucky10279
      @Lucky10279 3 года назад +1

      @@NickLucid Well my program is online so I actually usually don't have live classes (though we have forums where we can post questions for the professor and/or TA's or other students to answer). That's a choice I made because 1. I wanted the convenience of being able to do class at whatever time place is most convenient and 2. more often than not I get little out of lectures anyway and so I prefer to just teach myself the material and get tutoring as necessary and/or post questions online. I never really get it when people complain about how college requires so much self-teaching because, to me, that's kind of the whole point -- we live in a world with practically all the information we could want freely and instantly available. There's little a professor can tell you that you can't find online or in a book -- knowing where to find the information you need and how to use it effectively to actually gain an understanding of a subject is what's important.

    Absolutely great episode yet again, you two complement each other so well, but Nick, regarding "the superpower question" at 15:00...you really don't want immortality, it leads to literal insanity which is SO well depicted in the episode "Death Wish", Star Trek Voyager: Season 2, Episode 18. I highly recommend this episode even for non-trekkie fans, the whole episode is about immortality and what massive problems it has. The episode can be found in Netflix.

    • @NickLucid
      @NickLucid  3 года назад +3

      I've seen the episode. I just disagree with the premise.

    • @cedricveinstein6949

    • @chuckoneill2023
      @chuckoneill2023 3 года назад +2

      I also say that I disagree with the premise of that episode. Of all the immortal "Q" beings, this one individual seeks death? Just him, the rest are good with it? That's text book aberrant behavior.
      Other SF has approached the immortality issue similarly -- but, like any SF, it's literally speculation.
      Or, sour grapes. Mortals writing about theoretical immortality, and pretending it's actually a bad thing to have.

    • @NickLucid
      @NickLucid  3 года назад +4

      @@chuckoneill2023 "Mortals writing about theoretical immortality, and pretending it's actually a bad thing to have." Exactly! In Tolkien's universe, mortality was supposedly a _gift_ from the creator and humans would have appreciated it if they hadn't been corrupted by the dark lord. It's just an author trying to feel better about being mortal.

    • @cedricveinstein6949
      @cedricveinstein6949 3 года назад +2

      @@chuckoneill2023 I am off to sleep, just saying that the rest of the Q-beings were definitely not good with being immortal, they tried extremely desperatly find any new "thing"/stimulus to do like being a scarecrow or dog etc etc. They had seen everything, heard everything, done everything in the whole universe and there wasn't even anything left to say..so Q asked Capt Janeyway: "You are an explorer, what if there was absolutely nothing new to explore..would you want to live under those circumstances indefinitely?" Of course it's all speculation, how could it even be anything else with lack of any empirical data....but I speculate I wouldn't want to live forever in those circumtances that Q-being lived in nor would I want to be immortal as captive in a prison like Q was forced to so as not to kill himself, he might have been inprisoned indefinitely if Voyager hadnt taken a sample of the prison in space. Immortality being good/bad thing depends on the circumstances that you can live as immortal, some circumstances can indeed be bad. That's why an off-switch would be desirabe if one would be truly immortal.
