Whether it be a clarification of something I learned in university or something new I'm learning. Your videos always come at truths that are so simple and yet so profound.
The process is a bit non-linear. Sometimes I start with a question I want to answer. Sometimes I start with an animation I want to build a video around. I'm often working on several (3 to 7 maybe) videos simultaneously during the writing stage. Once one of them is finish being written though, I focus in on it and I'm all about that one video for about 1.5 to 2 weeks straight. The video goes up and I spend 1 to 2 days just answering comments on it. I try to take at least 1 day off from everything to clear my head and then the whole process starts over.

How come every time someone explains redshift between 2 objects in space they always imply there is a velocity involved. Seems to me if the distance between 2 objects is increasing, than the distance between 2 objects is increasing, period. I don't see why 2 objects couldn't have a relative velocity towards one another and the distance increase or even a relative velocity away from each other and the distance decrease.
_"I don't see why 2 objects couldn't have a relative velocity towards one another and the distance increase or even a relative velocity away from each other and the distance decrease."_ That's not how velocity works. If they're moving toward each other, that *makes* distance decrease. If they're moving away from each other, that *makes* distance increase. Period. The change in distance is *caused* by the velocity.
@@NickLucid distance apparently doesn't work that way, at least not in the context it's always explained to laymen's like me. Everyone says the distance increases because of the inflation of space, where does the velocity come from? Are they not mutually exclusive?
Ahhhh, if we're talking _cosmological_ redshift, things get a lot more complicated. There are three different and completely separate types of redshift: Doppler (relative velocity), Gravitational, and Cosmological (expansion of space). Some people try to set cosmological redshift equal to Doppler redshift and say that galaxies are moving away from us, but the truth is velocity is basically impossible to define at those kinds of scales. The comparison of the two redshifts only works locally. Cosmological redshift is quite counter-intuitive. I'll be doing a video on it soon.
@@NickLucid Yes please, because i'm not a smart person, and I'm not saying I believe one thing over another, I'm just saying it's confusing when someone says cosmologically speaking the light from distant objects is redshifting because the distances between them is expanding and then they say things are moving away from us. There is no way we could know something like that, they could be moving towards us slower in some kind of relative velocity to some fixed point somewhere, but the space is inflating faster, so the distance could be increasing while they velocities are pointing towards one another. I don't know if that's true or not, but it seems plausible. So I just assumed it's the way that scientists talk about these things to guys like me.
