I'm currently working on the same brand and scale of the one you just finished; after a couple of decades not working on any at all. I came across your videos of the Texas and have learned a lot of tips and tricks from your technic. I may not be able to do it the same deserved justice you accomplished, but it'll be a centerpiece of pride for me.
I'm definitely going to have to get an air brush system.

I built the USS Portland from the Indianapolis kit. While there is plenty of PE, you do not get any railings. I also bought better decals from Freetime Hobbies. Amazing. I did have some complaints about the model directions for the kit. Texas was a more complete kit. I like to build and paint as I go. I often paint the basic model, and then add the details with paint. The two hulls build in the same way. That is a solid hull.

Beautiful build and great painting and techniques... Small detail, please don't take it amiss: the national flag, Old Glory, flies from the flagstaff on the tail inport or from a halyard from the mainmast at sea... the front gaff is for the Union Jack inport only.

Hi, thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Nice to see a different approach to a battleship paint job as well, rather than simply whichever flavour of battleship grey is required followed by pin wash/weathering. By working up from such a strong dark tone through mid to a (semi) dry brushed highlight there is a lot of contrast in your model which to my eyes at least really give it a sense of scale and depth. It’s an approach I’m used to using with figure painting, but I think it works really well here and has resulted in something very dramatic and quite unique looking.

    • @Johnbuildsiconic
      @Johnbuildsiconic  4 года назад +1

Thank you my friend. They are a lot of dark area and shadowing. From Where in the light is the hitting the ship. I wanted to dry and replicate the look and feel to my model.

great job. One quick note. Our Union Jack, the constellation of 48 stars, would fly from the bow’s staff. Old Glory would hang from the stern’s staff or from the tri-pod mast, depending on the arrangement of equipment on the stern.

Stay safe too. Tora Tora Toro gives a good example of how the pre war battleships flew the national flag on the stern, the Navy’s Jack on the bow and signal flags from the spars on the forward tri-pod mast. Texas related ships often flew the Texas state flag too. See photos of the San Jacinto.

So if I am understanding the process, you're using the airbrush to do the general deck and surface colors, and then using the real brush to do all the vertical surfaces. Presumably because otherwise you wouldn't really be able to airbrush the verticals without ending up spilling over onto the decks again? I've got some ship builds coming up and I've been worried for a while about the build process!

The name of the ship “TEXAS” is placed only on the left rear side. Not across the back.

Hi Robert thanks for your comment. Ye this trumpeter kits was a big letdown. comes with a lot of poor instructions about decals and flag placement

Trumpy does you no favors with this kit. She wore Measure 22 at Normandy, and transitioned to Measure 21on returning to the Pacific for the invasion at Iwo Jima. Her Kingfishers were off-loaded in San Fransisco while getting that last radar upgrade (as depicted in the kit) and while being painted in Meas 21. Had she kept her Kingfishersm the would have been on all-over Navy Blue paint.
Trumpy even manages to get the US flag wrong on both the 1/700 and 1/350 kits.
The Jackstaff only ever flies the Union Jack, and then, only while moored. The US flag is flown from either the after mast or the stern flagstaff.
There was (and is) more than passing academic debate on whether the ship's name was on the stern in Meas 21. Given that Texas was always a fleet flagship argues for the painting. On the actual ship, there are weld bead for three versions, and three sizes, of the ship's name.

Thank you for your comment, your right on all the points listed above, I wish I had done more research, and not just followed the trumpeter kit instructions

@@Johnbuildsiconic I worked closely with the TPW curators of the ship, donating time and artifacts to her preservation. She's very 'real' to me.
Trumpy are just nuts on some stuff.
You did an excellent job getting the difference between the 20B of the deck and the 5-N Navy Blue--which is not easy.

The Texas is a beautiful old battleship. I really hope she is saved for future generations. And I would also like to visit her one day myself. In fact I would love to visit all the museum ships around the US

@@Johnbuildsiconic Yeah the anti aircraft suite US ships were mounting by the end of the war was truly ferocious. There is a naval historian calls the Texas the USS Second amendment lol

You got the full US Flag on the wrong staff. It goes in the stern staff and the in port Union Jack goes at the bow staff.
