Auto Modellista attempts to be a very technical racing game, with an immense amount of available parts and settings for the selection of cars provided to the player. Various aspects of each car can be tuned, allowing the player to tweak the performance of the car.
The game marked itself apart from others of the same genre with cel-shaded graphics, which gave them a hand-drawn and cartoon-like appearance.
In the Garage mode (the main single-player mode), the player is granted the ability to select one of four tire types which affect road grip in regard to the weather conditions on the race track (for example, the "Semi-Slick Tires" provide maximum speed and grip in dry weather, but suffer in rain). Other options include brakes (which determine braking efficiency), suspension, Turbines, Mufflers, Computer (determines the car's ability to accept upgrades later in the game), the engine, "Final Gear", and Weight Reduction.
Auto Modellista's customisation options also extends to visual enhancements, allowing the player to choose from many different color combinations, hood and spoiler types, plus the ability to add badges, stickers and even create license plates.
A large aspect of the game was its online mode, with onlines races supporting up to 8 players. This functionality (and many of the game modes relating to it) were removed from the original US and European releases, but was added back into the US Tuned editions of the game. The online mode of Auto Modellista has been terminated, and cannot be used in any versions of the game.
i would love if this game came back with an updated car list and better driving dynamics. the cell shaded look was so awesome

I will say, the driving feel of the japanese ver. is the complete opposite in terms of slip compared to the U.S. tune
The aesthetics of this game are just extremely comfy, everything from the cheesy announcer to the menu soundtrack/visuals to the cartoon-like styling of the cars and tracks

Has anyone noticed this game uses the same tyre squeal and dump valve sounds the early Gran Turismo games? Had this game when I was younger but only just realised
the idea of this game was ahead of its time, yet perfect for the time it was available. The aesthetics are great! I wish there were a modern version of this game.

I loved this game so much. Man, I need to go back and play this again, just for the nostalgia. This, NFS Most Wanted, Midnight Club 3, and GTA Vice City were my childhood.

This game had great graphics and the best Blow Off Valve sound 'ksssshhh!!!', I loved the garage mode where you could decorate your garage, its such a small detail but it just added another layer of fun. Wish this could be brought back with HD graphics, updated with the latest cars, this would be great for online play, can anyone else imagine driving an R35 or GT86 in the style of a comic book?? :D
I really enjoyed this game when I was a kid, tbh the terrible controls were one of the main challenges kek.

I would be very glad if any developer would do Cell-shaded racing game with simcade physics again!

I like how they put that in the beginning as a homage to the racers out there.. Man that puts a tear to my eye that they put small details like that which made this game so unique and original, two things missing in modern games
The tyre sounds are from gt1, gt2, gt3 and gt4 prologue.
The turbo sounds are from gt2 and gt3.

The first and last capcom racing game...
Before there was auto modellista, there was RockMan: Battle and Chase for PS1. Basically, it's a Mega Man kart racing game that's more 'Choro Q' than Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing. Great game, except that you can't play as Turbo Man. 😭

This is excellent, the sound design is brilliant and the sense of speed is fuckin rad. This is more exciting than today's stuff by far.
I am pretty sure I still have this game in my PS2 games collection. It was way ahead of its time and remember it was released back In 2002!

I believe they made it like that for the North American release. The handling in the Japanese and European versions is ultra-tight and responsive.

In north american release later the car get oversteer physics and better recommended to use the steering wheel to countersteer while drift around the corners.

How do you unlock all the items to 100% this game? I beat garage life twice, all the events say Complete on them yet a few stuff read its 70%. Im at a loss how to get everything. googling this shows no results

This is a CEL-Shaded game!
Look at how cheesy the game's logo is. It's just "A" in there with the game's title under it. But anyways, the gameplay looks good, and so is the cars (and the fact that Suzuka is in there), plus the signature cartoon graphics, making it similar to a cross between either Spongebob or an anime (in terms of graphics) as well as Forza (for gameplay) and NFS Underground (for a little bit of customization). The physics may somehow be a cross with either Forza, NFS Prostreet and Assetto Corsa combined, which is why it's a little difficult.
