After saying I don't want to see the depressing side of Britain on another video, you've done this quite well and interviewed the right people. Was worried it'd be nasty voyeurism but perhaps we all need to see the harsh reality of places the majority of us are unaware of, and the great efforts of those trying to help. 👊
Yes I was pleasantly surprised joe actually found a local org that was making a difference rather then just slatting the place. well done. joe approached the subject in a very balanced way showing there is a problem but also sought to seek out people in the area that were trying to make a difference. where there is hope there is a solution.

On line shopping and out of town retail parks combined with high business rates and greedy council parking charges have ruined our town centres. Local councils seem to be doing nothing to improve the situation. What's needed is a national strategy to tackle this problem but don't hold your breath.
I agree councils are a major problem putting up business rates and other rates for events. Many years ago ie 15yrs agon there was a fantastic launch of an event called the "vegefest" that was massive and held at the sheds in central and it was free entry with large number of stalls some even came from Europe. Then council wanted bigger rent space fees then they started entrance fees that was reasonable but small amount, which grew over years to nearly £20 entry fee for day just to walk around look at stalls! All this due to greed of councils. No one ever cared to do much, and now that event has all but disappeared!
Councils seem all but content to drain resources from what little rapidly vanishing businesses they still have operating in their areas until the tap is empty instead of trying to work on any kind of sustainable solution with mutual benefits. They'll keep at it until nothing is left then claim it's not their fault.
Thank you for this video. I lived in Bristol on the dole and on housing benefit during 2003-04 when the economy was supposed to be great because of Tony Blair. My flat on the Redland Road was full of dampness and black mould and my weekly treat was a £1 per pint night on the Gloucester Road in my musty smelling clothes. I sympathise with Bristol's homeless: I walked home past booming Christmas pubs and restaurants full of laughing people and over the homeless to get to my damp flat. I was one month away from the streets so I know it can happen to anyone in Bristol. It really was a Charles Dickens experience for me and this was before the 2008 crash and the Covid era.
I lived in Bristol from 2011 to 2018. Back then I thought it was an expensive place to live, and recently I checked what the rent prices are now and it's truly absurd. The reason people can't afford to live in Bristol is the Londoners trying to escape living in a 3rd world immigrant city. Still commutable to work. This forces the people who used to be able to live there to move out. This perpetuates as far as Norfolk by my personal knowledge as it's only a 90 minute train ride to the smoke and cash. London is the actual no go zone and to be blunt the phenomena is referred to as 'white flight'.
I think it's 'middle class flight'. White, black, or anything in between, if you want a shot at a decent life and you have the means then you'll be moving out of London.
Well done Joe for highlighting the issue of homelessness & deprivation, and people trying to help those who live on the streets in our cities & towns to get back on track. Bristol is not unique, it's growing throughout the country, exasperated by decades of general lack of investment, and it rises further due to the cost of living/housing crisis. I too think of the cold & hunger. When I was a tot I lived in council housing, my Dad would tuck us up on freezing cold nights, and say think about how blessed you are to be warm and cosy, people are sleeping outside tonight. Homelessness was no way near what it is now. Just near me, in a small town outside Manchester, some young people have pitched up tents nr the petrol station. I've never seen that all the time I have lived here.
Thanks for the kind words and the comment! I totally agree with what you've said, very sad scenes across the UK. Thanks for watching, hope you enjoy the upcoming adventures.
I live and work in a homeless community called Emmaus. Was at the Bristol one, now living in the Gloucester one. Long story cut sort, try to move on, didn't work out so i took a side step instead of going backwards. In my experience, they all work differently but the fundamental thing is, you got to want to help yourself by helping others. Some who are living homeless don't want to follow rules all work. But the fact is you need to be able to do this to get on in life. Thank you for the video, and take care man.
I remember going out down Bristol in the 60s/70s. It was great back then. It has been ruined. I feel sorry for the original Bristolians, they must be totally hacked off with the state of their city today,
From Ireland here and we enjoyed Bristol so much and brought our kids only couple of years back. Very sad to hear this as was hopeful to visit there again.
Makes me really sad to see Bristol like this. Grew up there and it was lovely in the 80's and 90's. I live in Australia now, seeing this makes me glad I do.
Wow, very sad place, never thought Bristol was as bad as this. Im in London which is pretty bad too, loads of trash everywhere and homeless people. Britain is dying
@@JoefishJI think it's kind of sad but I hope things get better in the future. Most people here think of London, or the English countryside, churchyards and villages when they think of beautiful England. There are such depressing places everywhere. I lived in the Columbia Heights suburb of Washington DC, which is only half an hour's walk from the White House and it looked exactly like some areas of Bristol you filmed here.
@@djzrobzombie2813 You have no clue so better don't talk about things you don't know anything about! Besides, who asked you anything? Is this your channel? My grandparents were Serbs from Kosovo and they were expelled from their homes by Albanian terrorists, so better shut up!
My home town. Still love Bristol. It's still a great city. St. Pauls was always an 'interesting' area for all the wrong reasons. I don't blame the people just the situation they were put in. Poverty, discrimination and lack of opportunity. I remember the riots in 1980. But I never felt unsafe there because I never went looking for trouble. To be honest I have felt more unsafe in some small villages at night. The gentrification of Bristol is no different to other cities as those with high paying London jobs are pushing out the middle class because they will pay more for the in demand housing. Even happening here in the USA. Thanks for the video JoeFish. You are a very good hearted and genuine guy.
Hey 👋 thanks for the kind words and for watching the video! Some really sad sights that need highlighting, thanks for watching! Really hope you enjoy the upcoming content and adventures
I am from Bristol , this was a thoughtful video . Gentrification _ this is the result. Thank you for showing the homeless and community support so we can support ❤️ 💙 💜🩵💚💙
I grew up in a lovely place called England in the late 60s 70s the expert politicians must be really pleased how their expert decisions have shaped our country
Bristol, tail of cities. Lived near and worked in Bristol for many years , still have very fond memories. Like so many places on this Isle, has areas that have fallen and need help. Great video as always Joe 👍
I went to Bristol while at Newcastle polytechnic 35 years ago on a trip with people from all over the UK. Everyone unanimously agreed it was the roughest place they'd ever been to with knife crime etc. So it seems this is a very long stand problem.
I saw you on Bald's video i think. This popped up and have subscribed. Look forward to checking out more of your stuff. We're the 6th richest country by GDP in the world, not 4th. Having said that the UK is pretty much a middle to poor country surrounding a rich country (London). Sad to see how so many great cities towns and villages have ended up recently either way. Good people are drawing attention to it though!
Stokes Croft area, City Road and Saint Pauls have been the dodgy/naughty/dangerous areas of Bristol for at least 45 years or so. So it's kind of always been like that, it's not a new phenomenon. I lived in squats on Picton Street then City Road and a bit on Ashley Road in the early and mid 80's. Drug dealers down the Saint Pauls end of Ashley Road with prostitutes walking the side streets. I got mugged on City Road once. Very rarely went down Saint Pauls after dark! The whole area was dodgy and still is. It would be *_news_* if it *_wasn't!_*
Hopefully things will begin to turn around for the homeless situation around the world. First richest country, the usa, or fourth richest country, it's not on!!! Many Blessings Joe, Well Done!!!❤👍
It's all part of the plan. Keeping property prices as high as possible, is essential to the government. With high property prices, high rents follow. The (side) effect of that is massive homelessness. One follows from the other. For example, the parts of California with the very highest property prices and rents, commercial and residential, have the greatest homelessness rates.
I thought I recognised the bear pit and was like ah yep Bristol. Prices over the years have gone through the roof I suspect lots have moved from London because Bristol is cheaper but now those who have grown up in areas around no longer can afford to stay. Even the 'rougher' parts of Bristol are still pretty expensive.
Well done Joe - you are a special human being trying to highlight this bewildering & upsetting situation. You illustrate Britain's very own "societal refugees" & issues that mainstream media channels & Westminster politicians avoid or just don't care about. The scale of this is staggering & it's obviously out of control. I am with Jasper Thompson on this - solutions can only happen at a local/ community level now. Best, R
I live in Wakefield in west yorkshire and just seems depressing to walk through. I used to love the place 20 years ago. I layed off from my job before xmas. Getting a local job seems even harder. Machete attacks happening that dont get put in paper.
You’re doing a brilliant job. It’s so sad that this is country wide. The government are messing up so much that e hardly recognise our own co. Poor people who sleep on the streets in winter. God help them. Thank you so much for your awareness and kindness 🫶🏼
Thanks for the kind words and for watching! Really appreciate it. Sad times indeed! Thanks for watching and the comment hope you enjoy the upcoming content
I used to know Bristol really well, and there is alot of ignorance around homelessness. Mainly from those that "assume". Did you ask that old man how long been homeless? I can tell you there are / were 6 major agencies in Bristol alone that regularly go out and pick up homeless off streets and have soup kitchens and board n lodgings and then possible referrals come from that to drug/alcohol support agencies. Most homeless have a mobile phone and agencies will maintain contact with them. many homeless flat out refuse services offered as they "want to hang with their freinds" or "dont like being indoors". There are also "tourist" homelessless that bus in from other cities if they get word that the beggings tips are good in an area. This is a fact. Also, yes middleclass are being squeezed out of existence due to high taxes/cost of living as Bristol is very socialist. This never effects the very wealthy as this lot hide most of their money in offshore accounts! There are other areas of Bristol that are also horrendous places are Knowle West and Hartcliffe ie large estates where thug kid gangs hang around and cause vandalism/theft damage assault on nearby people even animal abuse is very high in these areas, its the culture they cultivate. Massive student/drug scene in Bristol, nothing to do with class its just a new culture venture that is up and down the UK now.
Dying town centres are a byproduct of greedy supermarkets, but then Amazon came along and asked the supermarkets to hold its beer. Our pathetic weak government is helping the wrong people! I feel the best thing that could happen is for the internet to be turned off, id miss it and my business would fold but it would solve a lot if the bizz thats going on
Nice of you to help out that guy. I used to live in Bristol, Stokes Croft & St Paul's were always rough areas. But actually, Stokes Croft a good vibe with arty cafes when i left 5 years ago. What's Gloucester Rd like now? Used to be thriving. Areas like Fishponds are more up and coming now (i visited a friend a few months ago)
Yes gentrification of Bristol is happening very fast... But where do the locals go? Thanks for watching and the kind words regarding Jock, it's something we should all do from time to time.
@JoefishJ yes agreed, I couldn't afford to live there now. Ten years ago myself & my partner would pay £700 for a 2 bed flat in Redland. Can't imagine what prices would be like now for a damp basement flat in a posh area
I worked as a land surveyor in Bristol in the late 80s. Lovely city. We worked everywhere in the West Country but anytime we had to work in St Paul's, it was always a little sketchy. As long as I ended up at the Avon Gorge Hotel or the Fleece'n'Firkin ny 6pm, everything was fine.
How crazy’s this. I arrived back from Thailand last night and live in Cornwall. My train leaving Paddington wasn’t until 9am. I made the sharp plan to FO about due to the dossers around the station as I have passport etc etc on me. The train stopped at Bristol main station and they kicked me out. It was absolutely pissing down so don’t want to walk round looking for a room. I found a little place to hide near the station for a few hours. Didn’t know it was as bad. Ex Watford boy n all. Great vids and subbed
These problems aren't exclusive to Bristol, housing should be a national strategic issue but the government of the day doesn't seem to care. I'm a white collar worker but rents are so high that if i lost my job I'd probably be homeless myself within a couple of months, it's scary. I see homeless people on the street and think 'there but for the grace of God go I'
The Country is run to make excessively rich people even richer. The richest 20 people got £65b richer last year. Low tax gives rich more but cuts services, affecting the education, health and wellbeing of the masses. The country allows 500,000 people annually to enter the country, putting more pressure on services and resources, but also increasing the value of assets. The rich own the assets. We could help ourselves by buying British, and creating manufacturing in the UK. If someone wanted to design a Country, Britain would be it. Warm enough not to be ice, cold enough not to be a desert, an island that can be protected. seas to fish, and to cap it all the World speaks our language. Yet politicians still mess it up.
Low tax lol the tax in the uk is now the highest in history your right about Britain as a country it’s why it was prized as magical thruout history 4 true seasons not to cold rich fertile land lots of usable land no real threats easy for man to cultivate access to sea oceans easy to defend. And north European races good at inventing cultivating and fighting it’s what built the place. And assets are now as you say to the moon it’s a mega bubble like never before gold has broken its record 3 x this week and nvidea a blooming gpu company is valued at 2 trillion the Big Bang is coming… I made big in amd nvidea and ARM stock I got out cashed in it’s going to pop big time when it does try to invest everything you have grow it cash it buy gold if we have a economy left that is and not NWO digital ration books

Bristol so expensive the Bristolians are pouring into over the border into South Wales buying all the houses and making South East Wales more expensive for locals to live.
Hey, Joe. Well done so far. Just a little insight. Doesn't matter if you are in the richest or poorest country, those on the fringes of society are going to find it difficult. Doesn't mean they can't succeed but they have to get rid of their negative views towards education and law & order etc., then they have a fighting chance. People are also homeless because of mental health rather than other reasons, so, we can't remove everyone from the streets if that's where they want to live. We're going to see some of this no matter where you go. It's not societies fault in every case... it's mental health for many people who can't keep a home for whatever reason.
Depends where in knowle. A few streets are still a bit shit but it's generally okay there now. Hartcliffe is worse. Most of the areas that had bad reputations are okay now it's just bad luck if you end being next to some of the shit familys still lurking about.@@peternagy-im4be

@JoefishJ looking forward to it. It sounds like your from South West and probably quite clued up on the demographics around here. Glad you enjoyed it thanks for watching
Bristol seems VERY "fishy" ! Great video as always ! Love 'em.
Hahaha 😂 awesome, thanks for watching and the comment mate! Since the beginning 👊
Bonfire was on what's called Turbo Island, residents trying to keep warm at night.
Saint Pauls has undergone pritty major gentrification which meant prices going up and alot of residents & vice moving over to Easton.
Apparently a very common thing in that area. Thanks for watching and the comment
When I was a little girl, there was a nice restaurant called ''Bristol'' in my hometown in Serbia 😊
Well now you've seen the city of Bristol... What did you think? Thanks for the comment and for watching 🙏
Now the restaurant is called Kosovo
@@snezanamil8462 Kosovo is not Serbia , Kosovo is not Albania..... Kosovo is Kosovo!!! 😂
@@djzrobzombie2813 You have no clue so better don't talk about things you don't know anything about! Besides, who asked you anything? Is this your channel? My grandparents were Serbs from Kosovo and they were expelled from their homes by Albanian terrorists, so better shut up!
Heartbreaking to see what an utter dump my hometown has become
Likewise mate really sad. Thanks for watching
The gentrification of Bristol has been its downfall. So sad to see.
Really good point! Gentrification. Thanks for watching and the comment
what? erm wow to bandie a word around when its the opposite! This is called ghettoization! Gentrification is where you go upmarket!
What's the opposite of gentrification .. then you'll find what happened.
Hahaha such a stupid comment. It’s the opposite, gentrification has pushed the riff-raff out.
God Bless 🙏🙏🙏 you 😇😇😇 Joe 🙏🙏🙏
Awesome, Joe! You and Jasper helping out was touching to see. Keep up the good work!
It's all him... The link to his charity is in the description. Thanks for the kind words
A big group of "men" watching from the side alleys is becoming all too common with this nonstop inflow into the country.
Quite scary tbh... Just wait until next video... Went to Peterborough, wow!
A genuinely shocking and eye opening video. The footage looked like something from the set of a dystopian science fiction film.
Yes had that feeling for sure, like the Roman Empire in its last days. Thanks for watching and the comment
@@JoefishJ You're welcome! And thank you for the great videos!
I grew up in a lovely place called England in the late 60s 70s the expert politicians must be really pleased how their expert decisions have shaped our country
Deliberate policy to fill the UK with the scum of the world
Sad times. I often wonder what my grandparents would think. Thanks for watching hope you enjoy the content
Bristol, tail of cities. Lived near and worked in Bristol for many years , still have very fond memories. Like so many places on this Isle, has areas that have fallen and need help. Great video as always Joe 👍
Thanks for the comment! Very sad scenes across the nation. Thanks for watching and the comment
Kindness is a gift.
Indeed and it costs nothing!
I went to Bristol while at Newcastle polytechnic 35 years ago on a trip with people from all over the UK. Everyone unanimously agreed it was the roughest place they'd ever been to with knife crime etc. So it seems this is a very long stand problem.
Indeed always been problems thanks for watching and the comment
Good man for helping jock, surely goodness and mercy will follow you pal.
St Paul's was always a rough area. Do you not remember the riots of the 80's?
I saw you on Bald's video i think. This popped up and have subscribed. Look forward to checking out more of your stuff. We're the 6th richest country by GDP in the world, not 4th. Having said that the UK is pretty much a middle to poor country surrounding a rich country (London). Sad to see how so many great cities towns and villages have ended up recently either way. Good people are drawing attention to it though!
Thanks for heading over thanks for watching
Absolutely agree! For years I was told to stay away growing up 20mile away. Thanks for watching and the well thought comment.
Hopefully things will begin to turn around for the homeless situation around the world. First richest country, the usa, or fourth richest country, it's not on!!! Many Blessings Joe, Well Done!!!❤👍
Awesome thanks for the kind words. Very sad scenes around the earth, thanks for watching and the comment!
Why does a government want homelessness?
@@colincampbell4261
They want high property prices.
Thanks Joe. Really sad to see a Western city like this. Thanks for sharing
Really sad, unfortunately someone has to shine a light on it. Thanks for watching and the comment
Yes definitely your bang on there. Thanks for watching and the comments, hope you enjoy the content.
Thank you for sharing this, making the truth known 💚
Thanks for the kind words 🙏

Most of west Yorkshire is like this now
@MrKingkz Sad but true 👍 😢
Crazy isn't it! Thanks for watching and the comment
Bristol is a lot worse than leeds or Bradford even Wakefield for that matter
How long will the real people of Great Britain allow this??
people dont do anything, its a fact of UK, we are not French and not revolutionaries.
They won’t do anything. 😂😂
Crazy times thanks for watching
The worst thing is it will only get worse
Unfortunately that is probably the case. Thanks for watching
It's called liberalism, that is what is going on.
So many factors at play! Really sad times. Thanks for watching and the comment. I hope you enjoy the content 🙏
Many towns and city's in England are going the same way
Indeed thanks for watching
Dying town centres are a byproduct of greedy supermarkets, but then Amazon came along and asked the supermarkets to hold its beer.
Our pathetic weak government is helping the wrong people!
I feel the best thing that could happen is for the internet to be turned off, id miss it and my business would fold but it would solve a lot if the bizz thats going on
Great video
Thanks for the visit
You are the man Joe. All the best. Jim and Harriet

I hate this government.

Stumbled across this channel. Well done Joe. ✊🏻
They still have Debenhams ours got closed after being in town for 50 years
That Debenhams building is long closed. It's being bulldozed and turned into flats
Closed years ago. Thanks for watching
These problems aren't exclusive to Bristol, housing should be a national strategic issue but the government of the day doesn't seem to care. I'm a white collar worker but rents are so high that if i lost my job I'd probably be homeless myself within a couple of months, it's scary. I see homeless people on the street and think 'there but for the grace of God go I'
Truly sad times isn't it! Hard times across the nation! Hope you enjoy the content!
If someone want to design a country it should be the USA

Seems to be the case heard it alot actually. Then the process continues! Thanks for watching and the comment
Agreed thanks for watching and the comment

@JoefishJ looking forward to it. It sounds like your from South West and probably quite clued up on the demographics around here. Its sad to see indigenous bristolian people being pushed out through unaffordability due to wealthy people coming here from London etc.... the wealth divide "in my opinion" is 1 of the main leading factors in high crime rates here.
