Strange Characters In UK’s Weirdest Town 🇬🇧

- Everyone is free to be who they want to be in Glastonbury, except Cyphers. They’re not welcome..
Pretty much everybody has heard of the legendary Glastonbury music festival, but few know much of the weird and eccentric town of Glastonbury itself. A place of myth and legend, sitting below the ancient Glastonbury Tor, the town is a place of magik and spiritualism. It attracts eccentric and diverse characters who seek an alternative lifestyle. I took a day out wandering the town’s streets and chatting to its diverse collection of unique locals. This was a day of random and frankly quite odd conversations, in a place where everyone is free and accepted to be who they choose to be. Apart from Cyphers, they’re not welcome.

In fairness who wants to be filmed ! The reason alot of the people who are there are there to get away from cameras shoved in their face and all that kind of world brings with it !
The Geordie gentleman’s chalk art should be painted on the pavement permanently. It looks beautiful and would definitely put people in a positive mood. x
Totally agree
I absolutely concur.
Excellent work
I spent a night in a police cell and ended up in court for chalking on a pavement outside my kids school telling them I love em.
Should be on the side of a house
I live in a village just outside Glastonbury town, l did live there for a few months.
There isn't anywhere like it.
I'm from Manchester originally, the 1st time l visited here l knew l was going to move here when my kids grew up. That was 26/7 yrs ago.
I found the openmindedness acceptance of others rare.
I witnessed hippies, pagans, christians, jews, hari krishna's, witches, druids etc etc....all sat together & chatting in/outside cafes.
Never experienced that before, also wearing whatever they like without judgment from others.
No one goes hungry in this town either, always free food on offer....
It's also true the police are gentler here & more lenient.
I couldn't live back in muggledom where people are so brainwashed & conditioned.
I never fitted in at school or where l lived.
I feel so at home here, we have amazing musicians too that put on lots of concerts.
Everyday there's something on in town too, finding yourself & who you are is encouraged & not mocked.
I really can't imagine living anywhere else.......
Nice comment, thank you.🌹
I love Glastonbury and its people too.
Spiritual people always think deeper xx ❤
I'm frm Manchester,I moved to Cornwall 5 yrs ago with my partner an kids and found the whole place an vibe much more chilled,Glastonbury is definitely unique tho,and definitely has a special vibe, although sth mcr has some great characters and a bohemian rebellious undertone I agree u get conditioned to city life Good luck an hope u have many happy more yrs in the sw.
I like your videos, I watch a lot, however, I find it a strange choice that you included the fella who didn't want to be filmed in the video, I would have cut it out, doesn't matter if you're not breaking the law, he opted out and that should be respected. Great video as always, don't take this as criticism, it's just my opinion. 👍
Exactly. Might be legal but posting his face as the intro to a video seems disrespectful.
Maybe he could have walked away instead of getting into a discussion about it. Im talking about the Guy & NOT Wendall. .The guy said it was illegal for him to film him & Wendall explained there is no expectation of privacy in Public.. If that had been me then I would have walked away but we aren't talking about a normal thinking person here(Looked like he had a drink or 2). The Reading Guy even asked the other bloke to leave because he wanted to talk to Wendall & was quite happy to be filmed.
Yeah I agree I don't want to watch it now. Respect people's wishes!
Just because it's legal to film anyone in public, it doesn't mean any other laws don't apply to you. He's actually committing offences by causing alarm and distress, stalking and harassment for RUclips clout! I hate these kinds of streamers that use other people's misery for profit, harass them and then use this it's legal to film bs. If someone tells you to leave them alone and you continue to follow them and antagonise them you're breaking the law. Targeting vulnerable people, he won't be doing that to someone who can defend themselves or to anyone of size, he would quickly move on. He picks his vulnerable targets which is disgusting.
I've lived near Glastonbury and also in West Wales in the past and they have a lot in common in that aswell as attracting the Surrey green welly brigade who want to keep lamas and knit their own ethnic yogurt, they also act as a dumping ground who have records for let's say liking children. A lot of them try and stay under the radar and out of the public eye whilst carrying on with their hobby. I'm not saying that this guy is a hobbyist but it's something that newcomers moving to these type of places aren't initially aware of. I don't live far from Hay on Wye which is a low key version of Glastonbury which is another place I'd like to see a video of.
My experience of Glastonbury is that it attracts people who are burnt out and looking for peace.
Some find it especially those with money who can afford a nice place to live and look after themselves.
Really happy to see a shopping district that is not boarded up!
Sorry but if the guy didn’t wanna be on camera you should cut that part off why put someone on here who doesn’t want be filmed 🤦🏽♂️
yeah its called basic human respect
Oh shut up
Yeah. The "it's my right, even if it bothers you" bit was a bit much
I thought he was triangulating, making it about defending the man he was talking too and then himself.
That old mate was just being a deliberate shite stirrer ... he could have easily moved ... but nah, he just wanted to argue & be obnoxious ... too bad, so sad
This was a really good upload. I absolutely loved hearing how the Police got that homeless guy quilts and stuff. It's such a refreshing change to hear how they went out of their way along with the Fire Brigade to help the homeless.
I live in rural France , there is an ex English police officer here who says he left the police because it was being referred to as " The Police Force " when in fact it should be the "Police Service " he got put off by the attitudes and mentality of most officers . So good to hear the Glastonbury police seem to be a service rather than a force .
@@jaquesdaniels2964 Are you sure he's not just quoting Hot Fuzz
@@jaquesdaniels2964 It was officially called the police force until the '90s. Maybe he misunderstood? They were always helpful to all sorts of people until it was renamed the police service.
Cos they have nothing else to do In this area. Police in other areas actually have jobs to go to.im not joking either.
Yes that was nice to hear
Everytime I'm in Glastonbury i always overhear some really bonkers conversations. The last time I was waiting outside a crystal shop for my wife and son (who were being upsold on some sort of crystal cleansing device!) I was listening to a man earnestly explaining that we were on the fourth astral plane and that the reality you think you know is all a lie! Just up the road, waiting outside of a toy shop (had the dog with us) a woman was telling a fella on a bench that he was a poet, which he did not like as he was apparently a fairy!
I love visiting, it's such a mad place, but has a really friendly vibe to it!
People don't like facing reality.
Crazy how diverse and different the vibe can be just from going from one town, a few miles to a next town. Some real gems out there.
When my eldest was a rookie cop with Avon and Somerset Constabulary her first posting was at Wells, on her first day she was told by her gaffer that Wells was 'The rose between two thorns', the 'two thorns' being Glasto and Shepton Mallet.
The guy that gave you a reading was an interesting guy, he was my favorite person on this video. Also loved the artist with the rainbow mandala and quote. Art should be shown on the sidekick, the council is no fun. It looks like an interesting place to explore, Glastonbury.
Taurus, Aka Nigel Dibble, nice guy
I went for a wander round Glastonbury once. When I arrived at the car park in the town centre, there was a woman picking weeds that were growing up the side of the fence next to the car park. Half an hour later I saw the same woman and she was trying to sell said weeds to passers by as lucky heather. She obviously clocked me from earlier when I walked past and she nodded and wished me a 'appy solstice'. It was late July. That was a good few years ago now and it still makes me giggle when I think about it. Definitely some characters there you're not wrong :). Love it.
I think your story perfectly accurately captures the vibe of that place!
@@ChrisAlexT 😂
That guys art on the pavement was fantastic. Not sure why Glastonbury council would want to get rid of it, of all places.
I would imagine the Council fear of others trying.
Gaz is exceptional, we can all enjoy that.
Perhaps having it removed is in fact an advantage, it causes the need to create once more, possibly different each time, that would be my take away.👍
You want inspirational quotes you didn't choose everywhere you look when you go shopping?
You should go to Totnes now that's a strange place, yet with a unique atmosphere. Hippies mixed with very well to do people
Thanks for that information. ❤
For real, just outside of Torbados of which in itself is a marjoridore of inhabitants.
I was gonna say the same thing about Totnes. You beat me to it. 🙂
Totnes for sure and up the road GlasDenbury.
Totnes is great!
Glastonbury is an amazing place spiritually. You have the tor, white and chalice wells and some lovely diverse people and a great place to visit.
This was the most interesting visit you’ve ever done Wendall…brilliant..
yea, definitely Wendall on top form.
Used to spend a lot of time around Glastonbury. A Sunset from the Tor is beautiful.
Mid summer watching the sun go down, the guy playing the bongos that can hit you pretty deep 😊
This one was really different from most of the other street videos you have made. Even if people sleep rough, it seems to be easier in Glastonbury. Thank you. Really interesting video 😊
Holy shit, met Taurus many years ago, we went to glastonbury festival together, and his whole life changed in a few days and he just never went home, this was around 20 years ago, and he's still there! Great to see your face if you see this mate, remember the 3 disciples? lol. much love Pete
That happens to so many people in Glastonbury.
GLASTOFARI
Seriously? Man I went in 2000 and 2002, must have blown his mind. It is a special festival.
This sounds like something id do. I went for a drive to Windermere for no reason at all. Ended up buying a boat totally out of the blue on a different lake because i got lost and have been there ever since.
Taurus is my uncle ❤️❤️
@@xMegowanx oh wow! Such a great dude, only knew him briefly and never thought I'd see him again, but have never forgotten him and the adventure we had, am overdue a glastonbury visit, so I hope our paths will cross again :)

Going around Glastonbury is like being inside a real life fantasy rpg
Definitely your strangest video to date! Would be interesting to see a return visit where shops and businesses are visited. Keep the great material coming!
I used to live a bus ride away from Glastonbury. And yes I can honestly say, there's some oddballs there
I love ALL your video uploads, but this is by far the best of them all! Keep doing what you're doing. You're definitely doing something right!
Happy New Year to you and yours. 😊
Last time I went to there I randomly handed out psychedelic mushroom honey to strangers because that’s the kind of thing that should happen to you at Glastonbury

Wise words from 'Gaz the Glastonbury Geordie'.
I like Gaz, I see him whhen I'm there on Tuesdays. He's a veteran, please make a donation if you see him.
I saw someone drawing there the other day in pretty much that spot ,may of been him
Lovely video. I never knew the town was so unique. Nicely done sir
Fun town
Been a big fan of your videos but this has to be one of the most interesting yet! Keep it up
I enjoyed this video a lot, one of your best. Its obviously a very diverse place and nice to see a High Street with lots of independent shops.
Great video as always. Even though it's legal to film someone in public, I still have my own personal code on who I would film and how closely. Especially now that social media is so widespread and worldwide, we all need to be careful about how other people feel when we film them without consent (especially if we have thousands or millions of viewers and we are in someone's local town). It's more about ethics than the law, especially if someone is obviously in pain or is distressed.
I worry about those streamers who purposefully make a nuisance of themselves in public. They could negatively effect people's right to film in public in future.
I think you do a great job with your moral code and are very respectful, I just wanted to vent on this subject as it came up in the video.
Yeah just because it's not against the law, that doesn't mean we can't respect people's wishes not to be filmed ... especially if they are not doing anything wrong (if they ARE doing anything wrong then there may be good reason to be filming them).
Agreed 👍 😊😊😊
Good to see Glasto on your channel mate, I lived there for years and i'm now in Street, the next town along. I know all these people and the town very well. Its a great place but there is, like any place, some darkness. Keep up the good work.
What type of darkness
having grown up there,i can quite honestly say, ignore the town, head for the hills and countryside. thats where the true magic is.
loved this video - a lot of fascinating characters. Loved Gaz's chalk drawing.
He lives rough, please help if you can. He's a veteran.
There is still joyment among the people who are living with no decent income, so that the Glastonbury is not as devasted as the other places and a place to visit for seeing different lifestyle.
That was great! Maybe you could do a 'Glastonbury part two' video, as it seems such an interesting place. You could go inside some of the shops and talk to more locals.
Loved it, wished it was twice as long, thanks Wendall! :)
+1 vote for a follow up. It'd be great.
You'll be hard pushed to find "locals" in the town.
Glastonbury attracts the " alternatives," originally known as "New Age Travellers" or "Hippies" when they first descended on the town in the late 1960s/early 1970s.
@@tx5190Plenty of locals, actually.
Great video buddy! Somerset is my homeland, great to see you shining a light on glastonbury. It's an awesome place with amazing people!
Yay you did it! I left a message on one of your other vids suggesting Glasto would be right up your street a few weeks ago. Great vid Wendall. Please visit again in the Summer, the vibes are totally different in warm weather 😎
Yes! Summer is the time to go.
Glasto is brilliantly weird
Agreed
You should have respected the wishes of that chap who didn't want to be filmed by cutting that bit of the video, it didn't really add much anyway.
I agree. Sometimes, it is better to just humour a person rather than recite the old "no expectation of privacy in public" line.
That mandalla picture was incredible. Those colours. I can't stop thinkign about it. It's beautiful.
Purple lady was very upset about a lot of things. I hope she finds some peace in something somewhere one day.
Don't mention Brexit to her😂😂
Having worked there and been for a night out there, I can confirm it has a strange vibe but also friendly too. There are a lot of different individuals around the town and characters who have a story to tell and will openly chat to non locals.
Ive visited Glasto many times over the years, made friends, had some lovely experiences. However, that gentleman's description of it being an "outside asylum" is, for me, not far from the truth. I can only visit for 2-3 days and not that often, as there is definitely a dark heavy energy there. I think its due to what was said about people who come seeking healing, troubled souls. This makes Glastonbury a real hot spot of, what one local I knew described it as, dumped negative energy.
However, its so interesting and there's a sense of anything goes.
Dark energy. Haha. Rubbish. Glasto is what you make of it. Smoke smack and sit on the bench outside the coop all day and it will seem dark. Live a healthy happy life away from chasing dragons and its a happy warm welcoming place.
Nice to listen to a couple of clued up folk getting the word out on the street
I suppose the place has got it's 'mystical' thing that enables the small shop keepers to keep going, against the tide of Pound and charity shops that seems to have taken over every other town in the UK. Did you get the feeling that the High Street was doing OK?
High street very healthy
Yes the high street is very much alive. Lots of tourists pass through every day. No empty shops unlike surrounding towns.

I live about 30 mins away and go there a lot. They have the best health food shop called Earthfayte
@@spencergregory8049 Earthfare. Very expensive mind. The owner henry is a genuinely nice guy too.
I love living in Glastonbury for so many reasons, but one is that there is little in the way of small talk here, even with people you've just met. They feel free to get straight to the heart of communicating their beliefs, perceptions, interests, and so on because, as one your interviewees mentioned, it feels like there's generally less judgement here. Folk have mostly come here for one reason or another to connect with spirit, and are open to sharing their journey and experiences. Scratch the surface, and you'll find people from all walks of life, and much compassion, creativity, and skill.
Thanks again for getting more grassroots insights like these Wendall!
No worries
The pavement artist guy should get some of his designs on t-shirts. I could see people being into those.
I'd wear one
@@WendallExplores His design there looked like the album cover for Steve Hillage 'Rainbow Dome Musik'.
Lol, Plenty of folks in Glasto will know that!! 😉

Wendall I like your exploration s in different places in Britain, you show what the vibe is and what people make of their day to day lives, kudos to you, keep them coming. 😅
you missed the Tor, Springs, Well, and the Dragon
Been there many a times, so relaxing, the Tor is well worth the climb, when you come back down you feel so refreshed, folk say it's because of the Ley Lines that cross there, either way, great feeling. The people are really cool, they will spend as long as you want to simply sit and talk with you. Well worth a visit, the Abbey is also very tranquil and if you're lucky, yoiu may even see a monk walking the grounds. Great video BTW.
...jeez mate, this video alone has sparked my interest to visit this town.. it's like all the folk you interviewed - could come straight off a movie set - real characters lol. Also the Cops from other areas can learn a thing or two from the law enforcement in Glastonbury:)...
I would recommend you covering Croydon - a real mixed bag !! And especially since they have an exhibition at the library on how the town was in its hay day compared to now... One area is like a mini Manhattan and next to that - it looks like a bomb site - so worth checking out!! Thanks mate - inspiring as always...!!!
It is unethical and illegal to film someone without permission for commercial uses. in ireland anyway he could ask for a part of your profit of the video
He wanted an argument & was deliberately being a shite stirrer ... had plenty of opportunity to move out of camera ... too bad, so bloody sad
Liam looks a lovely lad. I hope he gets himself sorted out soon. ❤
Happy New year wendell
Thanks for your video
Gaz with the street art is telling the truth. In about 5 years time, a lot of people will open their eyes and realise the real lies
I see Gaz on Tuesdays if it's not raining. I hand out free papers near where he works. He's a veteran who lives rough, a lot of people help him if they can. Warm food, a little cash, a decent coat. A clever man indeed, I always enjoy talking with him.

Nobody should be out on the streets no matter how bright or articulate they are.
After watching that I feel normal, not many in my village would agree.
Great stuff as always!
Thank you - I enjoyed this, I would certainly like to visit here after watching this!
Well worth a visit
I’d enjoy this if you let these people talk instead of butting in while they are trying to talk
Yes I’ve noticed he does that a lot. I think he wants it to be his wording or his verbal agenda on the show more than the people that he’s obviously making money off of without sharing that money or without getting those people consent to film them to make money off them.

I kinda agree with the guy who said it should be illegal to film someone else in public, the only reason they won't change the law is because cctv footage wouldn't stand in court but, its immoral to film anyone without their consent.
Well if that law got passed you would kiss goodbye to 50% of all RUclips content 💀

" nobody has the right to privacy of their image". I don't know why you said this to him. Is it not just kind to respect his wishes and not film him? I don't understand why you didn't just stop filming the man. He obviously didn't want you to film him. I didn't like your attitude Wendall towards the man that just didn't want to be filmed. Could you not have at least just blurred his face and respected his wishes rather than arguing with him? I have enjoyed the rest of your videos, where you were kind and considerate. What happened with this one?
Exactly everything you said I was also thinking and I was also thinking maybe with his RUclips channel and the camera is making him somewhat conceited and self important. Not sure how much more of his videos I will be watching if he continues with that shitty attitude. 😡
Yes, I also think that may be the case. @@purplebutterfly7257
The point is that Wendell was filming the other guy. It's a real nuisance when you have people mouthing off and asserting themselves in any interaction that doesn't include them. People need to be clear on the laws about this. I've studied Film and did a lot of street filming and photography when I was younger. There's always one idiot that stands in front of the camera and asks what you're doing, or looks over your shoulder and starts yacking while you're trying to record sound.
Love it. Glasto is great. No wonder my mum loves it so much, she's a strange un.
To be fair mate, the festival is nearer the village of Pilton and not really Glastonbury at all.
I dig your channel bro, and it gives me joy which I really do appreciate, but just one thing, please...if someone doesnt want to be filmed, dont put it in the edit, he didnt know you from Adam, and you did invade his space. Yes you are in your rights to film, but that interaction wasnt cool to watch. Confrontation is a soul sucker. Peace and love tho man
Legal but not necessarily ethical. After all, it's taking someone's image without their consent...theft...even if they're oblivious?

Glad you enjoy the explorations 🙏
Such an interesting place, I went there years ago out of season for a wander round. The carpark always makes me laugh, in that it seems particularly neat & tidy. Got that hippie, spiritual, anti-establishment vibe, the latter being what you saw in the man not wanting to be filmed. He prob doesn't believe it's morally right to film people even in a public place, 20 yrs ago or so, more people would likely have agreed. The man doing the reading had a nice energy, would have liked to have seen more of your reading if not too personal. I think he would have sat there all day to help someone figure stuff out, seemed like he genuinely wanted to help! Really appreciated this video, your videos are always good, but it's nice to see somewhere less downtrodden than a lot of the towns visited, prob coz they have a unique perspective on life, they never really lost the "highstreet" like other places have as their shops are all independent, that in itself is really cool & unusual! I'm not sure if it might be that the town planners won't allow big chains, that is monumental in this day & age, & it has served them well if that is the case. How wonderful to see free-thinking in action for the good of everyone!
I moved to a village just on the outskirts of Glastonbury five years back, because......I am strange, weird & wonderfully unique. I was even openly blessed out on the high street not long ago. It's a glorious place to live🏳️🌈🇬🇧❤️

It angered me when I heard the council comes around and scrubs away the Fine Art on the sidewalk. If I saw them remove it I would break their brooms.
The council there are unpopular for many reasons, particularly the mayoress who is rumoured to be XR and that she was installed rather than elected.
It's a complete misconception that the town is full of hippies. Yes there may be a few but they're hugely outnumbered by the most diverse population you could imagine. It's a very eclectic mix of people from all over the world. I've lived here for 17 years and absolutely love it. I run two shops and we get the most amazing mixture of customers you could imagine. ( no, we don't sell crystals, instruments, hippy clothing or weed 😂)
During the bi-annual fairy ball we have the most unbelievable range of folk in the most elaborate costumes you could imagine. We have Druid's, witches, self titled aliens and lizard folk, famous people, not so famous people. Tarot readers. Gypsys, psychics, mediums, clairvoyants, Wizards (surprised he wasn't on the street. Usually at the Abbey gateway). King Arthur's, Merlin's, Morgaine Le Fey, even Jesus Christ has returned several times in different guises.
Best time to come is end of July/beginning of August for Glastonbury town at its prime I would say. There plenty 'normal' shops and lots of pubs and cafes also. Sitting and listening to some of the conversations that happen around you may be an eye opener 😂
If you would rather come when it's quiet, come during the festival, the town is a complete ghost town as Rainbow Tony stated in your video above.
Glastonbury is the most amazing town in the world for the open minded ❤❤
Yet incredibly white. Not much diversity going on 😅
Lots of small towns are all white..especially down south

You know, you may have "the right" to film in public places, but a lot of people don't like being filmed. And outside their own personal home almost everywhere is public.
Spouting "I have the right" is the new Western way of showing dominance without giving respect to people. Taking advantage, making money on RUclips, feeling, self-righteous.
You wonder why your country is turning to sh*t it's because this mentality is almost ubiquitous, yet so harmful to society. And it's not just about filming people, but everyone's entitlement to "rights" that are very individual and not respectful of society and others.
are you saying nobody should use a camera? because ive took many photos of things and caught other people in them. also he was filming and that fella came over to someone with a camera when he didnt want to be on camera, im also offended by the colour yellow but people still wear it outside without thinking of my feelings
@@mat_allthegearfishing It's pretty obvious what I said. Read it again. People who are intrusively filming other people are a menace. I'm sure you've experienced it yourself when taking photos/videos you try not to intrude on other people's personal space, especially if you get the impression they don't want to be filmed.
In case you can't read, I didn't say anything about the "fella" in my comment.
Well said, he’s learnt nothing from the vibe of the place in this experience clearly. A lot of the people that live here are outliers and quoting standard laws to them is a massive turn off for them.
@@mat_allthegearfishingThe dude's not just out with a camera, he's specifically going after homeless people, the elderly, infirm, mentally ill / neurodivergent, addicts, and generally anyone who looks or acts a bit goofy and sticking it online to a massive audience for clicks. Don't be disingenuous, you know what this sort of content is. It may not be openly sneering like Jeremy Kyle but the gaze is similarly contemptuous behind the pearl-clutching.
@@AmbroseCadwell yeah it feels like poverty porn all over again, like the show benefits street etc
