I agree. Poor mental health and drugs play a part. When I owned my own flat, I couldn't cope and started hoarding. I get a lot of help with my mental health conditions but am currently having to stay with family. If I lived in an housing association home, they would give me some help, but private landlords have no obligation to do that so it would very much depend on the landlord and often they are far away. I live in Central Scotland, my friend rented a flat in my town and the landlord was in Newcastle. Houses in my semi rural beautiful area is expensive and many rented properties are holiday lets. Then housing developers are building more and more expensive private houses with the provisional that they fling a little money at the local schools

Why don't people spend any time caring for where they live anymore? I know they are poor, but a few people spending a bit of time. Picking up rubbish, weeding and sweeping, painting, basic house keeping would make the whole area so much better. I do a bit where I live. Just spend an hour every two weeks or so keeping a bit of a public footpath near my house free of weeds and rubbish. I wish more people would do just a little bit to care for the town they live in. There's flats around where i live and it seems like not even one person in them can be bothered to go out occasionally and pick up some rubbish or pull up some weeds. It doesn't take long or much effort to make a big difference to help yourself and your neighbours

Do you know what happens mentally when you are living within these conditions? Look up architectural psychology. It crumbles the mind into defeat. Only super human resilience can break free from the effects of such living conditions.

A qualified stroke nurse that suffered a stroke herself and was told because she is a nurse she could take care of herself, that got me!!! I would love to meet the person who told that to her when she applied for help..I can guarantee you, that person would also need to apply for help after our little meeting..Utter scum and no empathy whatsoever for your fellow human beings..
I was born and lived in one of these terraced houses in Burnley as a child. Moved away when I was ten with my parents. Trouble with Burnley is, its cold, wet, miserable and that gets you down, and when you're down it is easy to fall into mental illness. I went back up there for a funeral in 2017 (I live in Devon by the sea), and just being there for two days was depressing me. The sun never really shines through, it makes a peep then disappears behind those threatening clouds, and that is in the summer. In the winter, it's just rain, grey, cold and miserable. It's 400 feet above sea level. The clouds come over, can't get past the Pennines and it just dumps down. The people are good and the football team is great though. Oh, by the way, I can get a pint in my local for £2.50 on a Monday. Yes, Devon by the sea.
Having lived in Burnley from1975 to 1985 and going to Towneley High School I can say the decline was clear back then. When I returned to Burnley in 1987 it was no better, I left Burnley in 1990 and when I return today it is terrible. Nelson, Brierfield, Accrignton, Blackburn and Darwen are suffering just like the rest of the UK from decades of governments giving industry and jobs away to foreign businesses in far away places. No jobs, no hope. Britain is broken, not just Burnley!
I lived there too and escaped early 2000's. Can't say I miss it. The houses are cheap because the job opportunities and pay are terrible. The whole town is falling apart. Last time I was there they'd made some effort to do up the town centre, but step outside there and its like you've hit slums. I'm forever grateful I had the chance to get out, because not all of them can.
We have a very similar problem here in the States.I guess that's the new thing, putting foreigners/immigrants before the people who were originally there.

Council in burnley wasted loads of levelling up money on replacement to a roundabout in the town centre which has caused chaos for months and nobody in the town wanted it. Loads of shops closed as a result. No wonder the town is in a mess. Why wasn't it spent on housing improvements?

No matter how poor you are you can at least keep the place clean. Wash your bedding, clean your toilet and throw out your cigarette butts instead of throwing them on the windowsill. Poverty does not automatically negate cleanliness.

A couple in our fifties from the Midlands. We both came up in council properties. Our families too. It was normal, for working (actually working but low wage) class people and not a stigma at all in my entire big town. You wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between council and privately owned in our area. In fact, many passed, seamlessly, into the private market through "right to buy" over the years. We all had, spotless, nicely decorated/furnished homes which we'd done up ourselves with our own wages. Not much drinking (Party, wedding, Christmas, etc and occasional nice evening out) and no drugs (yes, really). In 50 years, I only ever knew two scruffy households and they weren't anywhere near as bad as in this video. The change came when it went from being classed as "council housing" to being classed as "social housing". That's the moment the authorities began to put the addicts, criminally minded, baby factories and work shy into the council houses. Now look where we are. We still live in a council property in the same area as it's a very low wage area. It is a high rise. Our flat is the nicest one out of hundreds, according to council officials and repair personel who have visited. Don’t give me all this and that, about, "why should I pay to decorate somebody elses property", when renting council/social property. It's because the "I" has got to live in it. We have less money per week than the average boozer/druggie throws away on their addictions. Then again, we work and are not afraid of cleaning products, DIY, paying our bills nor being sober. Our area is no more well off than Burnley. Our industrial past is considerably blacker (that’s a clue) than that of Burnley. Our area was that bad it caused the death on many a resident. Past descriptions described it as hell itself, in the not too distant past.
there is a lot of truth in what you say. I think that drink and drugs are a big issue here. I also can't believe, that even on benefits you can't afford to buy bleach to clean your toilet. But I guess if you've a drug habit all else is irrelevant to you. But I do see a massive change in society - we are not the same people we were generations ago. People have had it so easy over the last 50 years.

Yeah I totally agree. I know it's not simple and people have real problems, but now it seems like people expect the government to provide everything and solve every problem. If my parents and grandparents didn't have something they worked to get it. Fixed their car or house themselves. Made or repaired clothes. I learned from them as well. Lots of things can be improved for very little money or time if your just prepared to think a bit and learn some basic skills
I met Mark when I lived in the town centre. Nice bloke. He was struggling with his broken bike chain and needed it to get about. So helped the and got his bike fixed for him as he was genuine.

Been looking for 3 months to no avail. The Council is 4-6 months wait, and their properties have no floor coverings or white goods. The private sector is astronomical so forget it. You need 5 weeks rent for a deposit and a guarantor, and an income of 30 times the weekly rent. The weekly rents are £280 minimum for a 1 bed. Bedsits are advertised as 1 bed also. I was in the same situation, got a no fault section 21, council did virtually nothing, now I'm in a studio flat that I can't afford 5 months away from retirement, local hotel full of migrants, everyone is selling up and leaving then ethnics buy the properties. my towns population is being replaced.

I live near Burnley and what they aren't telling you is how the locals (not all of them but a lot of them) are out drinking at 10am Monday morning. Littering and vandalising etc. They also do it to themselves unfortunately

Most of trouble was done by unreliable tenents and wasters, they had no issue looking using dole money on junk and ciggies. However they never had anything for the short fall in rent. Not forgetting tarty mums using kids for meal tickets and usint their free time looking for a new boyfriend or partner. People need to know most of the good men and women are taken. A work mate used to live in Swindon most of the trouble is by the locals who don't care about their town there is no community. He got depressed as he would do 12 hour shifts and see people drinking all day or harassing people who earn their money. When I lived in Kent, there be people drinking outside the Jobcentre before signing. I do agree that the government need create job markets, or at least pay apprenticeships the min wage.
Stop people who are not citizens from owning homes in the UK. (Hard to hold people accountable if they live in another country) Limit how many homes a person can own. Encourage selling homes to the council for social help (But the gov/councils need to pay market prices and not rip people off) Have more homeless shelters that give people a secure private space, have one for people addicted to substances and another for people who are not. (I hear a lot from homless people they dont use these places because of the rules surrounding durg use, curfew and safty) Get more understanding goverment workers. When I ended up in a homless situation I was basiclly told "No help for you because, single male working age". Why are we deciding on who gets help based on such things? Like the person in this video said "Your a nurse manage your own help" The attitude of some of the people supposed to help is really judgemental and dismissive. Finally stop migration for at least 10-15years for anyone low skilled or dont already have a job and home in place before they arrive. We dont need more low skilled workers, the reason a lot of brits are not doing these low skilled jobs is because the pay is too low. Saying we need migrants here to do this work is saying "we need workers we can exploit for cheap labour who have less legal rights if they complain" Slavery is increasing in modern times because of this train of thought on migration and low skilled work. Just some ideas I have I doubt it will all work or be correct but we need more dialog

They tend to be made of lesser materials and "kinda" out of the area, meaning you need a car as public transport doesn't really get there yet. We defo do need more housing but we keep building upper middle to upper class housing not working class housing. It starts that way then they realise they can get more appealing to the demographic above them. The sheer amount of 1 bed flats going for one mill or more in city centers is crazy!

I live in a run down part of Accrington. I think this paints a distorted picture. Yes slums in Burnley are cheap ... becasue no one wants them. I want to move to a better area if I can but not take on another mortgage. An ok 3 bed semi - like I own now is pushing £190K in Accrington. There are no cheap "liveable" houses, not really.

Politicians starting with Thatcher killed off any industry in the country! And the downward spiral has not stopped since, accelerated by 2008, Brexit, Covid, and the Tories.
This administration is putting many families in difficult situations. A lot of people are financially struggling to live, put a roof over their head and put food on the table. Things are getting worse these days, if you don't find means of multiplying your money you might wake up a day to realise you didn't plan well for yourself and family…

I didn’t leave England because it was in a sorry state but as I now see it is in a sorry state. I’ve never looked back nor had any regrets that I moved. In about 5 years my town has turned into what looks like a foreign country. The mood is low all around and there's destitution and homeless natives all over the place. I really can't take it here anymore. I'm doing all the overtime I can to save something to buy a flight and get away from here. This place looks and feels like the third world.

The contrast hits you right when you step off the plane, I came via lovely Luton btw. Even leaving from Luton airport the UK staff on the terminal were shouty and unfriendly, the vibe changed immediately as I stepped inside the plane with it's Polish crew. It's way calmer there, clean and safe which goes without saying but people are just calmer and more civilised. They are far politer than people here (I'm not saying British as we're a minority where I am). There are foreigners there but because they haven't had mass immigration, they behave like everyone there. For example an uber driver, who I think was Iranian judging by his name, only spoke Polish - which I don't have a problem with as I was in Poland and am able to greet and thank in Polish, and can speak a bit more( albeit broken) Polish if necessary, I don't expect everyone there to speak English although many do speak excellent English - and the directions to my hotel on his gps were in Polish, here in London it would probably be in Arabic or something. Coming into Luton airport I noticed how grotty and run down it looks, and what is new just looks cheap. At the National Express coach stop the woman working got rude and snappy as she could barely speak coherent English so I couldn't understand her. Got off the coach link in London and before I'd even crossed the road to the tube station was accosted by a crackhead hassling me for money. On the tube a couple of ''roadmen'' strode through the carriages talking about how they're going to kill someone, probably bravado but still not conducive to a civilised atmosphere. It's horrible being back.
yeah i used to live in Burnley lived there from age of 3 months to the age of 19 i also worked on the bypass that broke Burnley, factories were closing down tumbling like a house of cards to make way for the bypass houses were force purchased, a friend of mine who lived in one of the houses parents refused the offers it was their family home for 3 generations so they were a bit reluctant to let it go, they were persecuted by the council and the police, the police raided their house often and when they did they ripped all the flooring up even to the point of ripping the plaster of the walls and ceiling as back then they were plastered over wooded slats on some older properties also all their furniture ripped open and just shredded, after a year of this they were forced out and didn't get a penny, everyone was told the bypass would bring more jobs and yet the opposite happened,
Shocking. I work in the construction industry i work with my team to do up properties, we dont cut corners we literally give 100%. I am seriously considering doing up properties like this and renting them to decent tenants.
Do you have a program like Habitat for Humanity ? Imagine this: help people get down payments to buy these dumps, then have a group that gathers together to repair them, one after another in a series. People can learn the skills, then be volunteering at the next one. Start with one- as an example of what is possible. Get some traction. In my neighborhood we help the elderly and disabled repair their places. It’s good for everyone.
We have them all over the U.S The program was first spear-headed by the former President Carter and his wife back in the 80s till current. We have several or more affordable housing and up to standards. ❤
They did a similar thing in Liverpool about 15 years ago where homeless people built a street of houses to live in, all for TV too. Then never heard of it again.
I live in Burnley and the last 7 years the town as gone down hill with kids running riot e bikes and people on the streets with no home to go to our government don't give a toss wether you live or die its a joke
Because you sit back and accept it, all the kids on corners have parents…do they know where the kids are? If you let 💩 build up it becomes a problem, the people look shitty the houses look shitty the gardens look shitty, it’s your responsibility to look after your appearance and your possessions
This is the sort of thing that the government should be bring in legislation about. These homes should have to be subject to standards, and checked periodically by civil servants to make sure they are inhabitable. The homes may be cheap but they have to be brought up to standards allowing human habitation. No leaking roofs, no mould, no infestations of any sort, inspected electricity, plumbing and HVAC. And any politician that votes against this should have to live in one of these places for a month.
I thought certain laws were in place regarding rental properties ie smoke alarms fire escapes etc of course privately rented accomodation ie friends or family would be outside this legislation if you know what I mean .
I also think council homes/private need to include a book or leaflet about how mold forms and other issues. I think a lot of the issues could be solved by informing people not familar with UK climate to avoid it becoming an issue. Yes landlords need to keep homes up to standards and be held accountable for sorting mold, damp, plumbing, infestations ect but lets be honest it isnt the landlord creating a lot of these issues it will be the tennets. They also need to do their part and nip issues in the bud rather than letting them get worse. When the home I rented had mold, I took evidence, told my landlord and said I would clean and sort it as long as he was willing to pay for the materials to do it. Didnt cost me anything but time I would spend cleaning my living space anyhow, landlord had his house sorted for cheaper. It seems like people just expect someone to come round and clean for them?

Why aren't the private landlords being held to provide safe, dry, and warm accommodation? Why can private landlords offer practically derelict properties/rooms for rent that are void of any inspection or standards? The knock on affect to the NHS (due to the damp and/or rat infested properties) is worryingly high. The knock on affect to the NHS mental health teams seeing patients (who live in these appalling conditions) presenting with ever increasing levels of depression is increasing year on year. The knock on affect to the police/crime rates in these shameful slum areas is, as can only be expected, ridiculously high. Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, huge numbers of council housing were sold to existing tenants at greatly discounted prices. Doing this served one purpose only - to artificially show that government spending under her Tory rule was low. In actuality, the end result is a dire lack of affordable council houses, and with new builds being "thin on the ground," the future doesn't look great. Councils ought to be buying these cheap (and rundown) properties. Refurbishment programmes, using local unemployed people, to bring the houses "up to scratch" could easily be brought into effect. The resulting rentable properties would then start "paying back" monies spent. Having good, rentable housing stocks makes total sense.

This doc did not tell you everything. No landlord leaves the tenant's home in a disgusting mess. That's the tenant's fault. Yes, landlords should be repairing things that need repairing, but the tenant has to try and keep their home clean and tidy. Also, how many of these tenants are addicted to substances and don't work? I understand the people who are physically or mentally disabled, but what about the rest? If you are unhappy with your housing and can improve your life and move to a more liveable place, do it!
Me too. Self reliance and DIY is my thing. That's what used to be the norm. Now, it's people who refuse to help themselves. Always waiting for the council/social landlord to do it. I've had mold in a rented property. I got rid of it, learned how to keep it out and redecorated with our own wages and elbow grease. I don't understand how the man, with the arthritic wife, can't even be bothered to, as a bare minimum, put a tarpaulin over the roof and door of that outhouse. You can buy these things in a poundshop and he doesn't look infirm. I'd be able to sort that out, properly, and I've got serious health and mobility issues because of heart failure. I mean, you could even get that to flush semi properly with a cheap plastic cistern and a bucket to fill it with, if there's no water supply. The sewer pipe and bowl is there, wouldn't take much to bring it back to full service. Nobody wants to sort stuff themselves these days.

Did they consider moving to some country where it's warm but housing is equally cheap? Like in asia, for example?

I used to live near Burnley years ago, got a cheap house on a decent street but a lot of them are slowly being demolished. It just takes time. Large areas have been redeveloped with brand new houses, Accrington Road a good example. New housing has also gone up near Duke Bar but its a ghastly part of Burnley. I wouldn’t buy a nice house next to a rough area, thats why most of Burnley needs knocking down. Make it a new town but its all about money, there isn’t any to do this on a grand scale.
Tenants. If your Landlord has a mortgage on the property, they are obliged to keep the property in good repair as part of the mortgage conditions. I suggest writing directly to the lender and enclose photos as evidence. The Lender wants their investment in the property protected and will make the landlord carry out the repairs or the lender coukd repossess the property.
What a wise observation the homeless man living in his car, made! Even if illegal immigration was removed, homelessness, deprevation and unemployment would continue in Britain. I've just said as as much in another reply. "Can’t someone else do it", seems to be the order of the modern day. I could fix that and I'm a fifty something woman with a knackered heart. OK, not quick, but it would only take a couple of weeks by breaking it down into manageable bits. When I was well, it wouldn't have taken me long. Sod it. Now I'm depressed, remembering decorating my flat, laying flooring, sewing curtains, designing and making furniture from real wood while my husband made the tea & sarnies. Me lovely tools are getting all lonely and dusty. Heart failure really freaking blows.

I seriously would have expected better treatment and administration from your government. Sadly, I have to remark that I feel some (I'm sure not all) of your political representatives ought to be collectively ashamed to have presided over this level of decline and poverty. I notice that certainly these properties and living conditions are in a shocking state of disrepair and degradation, but if more effort was made to at least keep them tidy and clean, it would render living conditions more endurable, safe and healthy. In the poorest of times, previous generations would have scrubbed their homes clean with basic cleaning agents like soap and vinegar etc. It doesn't have to cost a lot to keep a home clean and tidy despite it's condition of disrepair. So government and landlords need to examine their consciences, but residents need to take a little more responsibility and pride in their lives too.
Actually there are some very nice areas of burnley , if you own a property its up to you to sort out damp ( or clean your toilet ) there are laws on rental properties , certain segments of the community have thier own property laws thats tougth nuff said.

I lived in Burnley for 2 years in 1970s. I was very young so just appreciated my freedom but it is a rough but friendly place. . My home town is only 10 miles further into the countryside but like night and day really.
Allowing the homeless to beg and loiter in town centres has diminished the property value. I took my daughter to buy new trainers and we witnessed 2 smack heads digging up in a shop doorway, in view of the public. Its disgusting how this has become the norm.
Maybe addressing why people feel the need to take drugs would be a step in the right direction? If people are happy and healthy, their surroundings benefit too.

I agree. Poor mental health and drugs play a part. When I owned my own flat, I couldn't cope and started hoarding. I get a lot of help with my mental health conditions but am currently having to stay with family. If I lived in an housing association home, they would give me some help, but private landlords have no obligation to do that so it would very much depend on the landlord and often they are far away. I live in Central Scotland, my friend rented a flat in my town and the landlord was in Newcastle. Houses in my semi rural beautiful area is expensive and many rented properties are holiday lets. Then housing developers are building more and more expensive private houses with the provisional that they fling a little money at the local schools

Why don't people spend any time caring for where they live anymore? I know they are poor, but a few people spending a bit of time. Picking up rubbish, weeding and sweeping, painting, basic house keeping would make the whole area so much better. I do a bit where I live. Just spend an hour every two weeks or so keeping a bit of a public footpath near my house free of weeds and rubbish. I wish more people would do just a little bit to care for the town they live in. There's flats around where i live and it seems like not even one person in them can be bothered to go out occasionally and pick up some rubbish or pull up some weeds. It doesn't take long or much effort to make a big difference to help yourself and your neighbours

I was born and lived in one of these terraced houses in Burnley as a child. Moved away when I was ten with my parents. Trouble with Burnley is, its cold, wet, miserable and that gets you down, and when you're down it is easy to fall into mental illness. I went back up there for a funeral in 2017 (I live in Devon by the sea), and just being there for two days was depressing me. The sun never really shines through, it makes a peep then disappears behind those threatening clouds, and that is in the summer. In the winter, it's just rain, grey, cold and miserable. It's 400 feet above sea level. The clouds come over, can't get past the Pennines and it just dumps down. The people are good and the football team is great though.
Oh, by the way, I can get a pint in my local for £2.50 on a Monday. Yes, Devon by the sea.
Having lived in Burnley from1975 to 1985 and going to Towneley High School I can say the decline was clear back then. When I returned to Burnley in 1987 it was no better, I left Burnley in 1990 and when I return today it is terrible. Nelson, Brierfield, Accrignton, Blackburn and Darwen are suffering just like the rest of the UK from decades of governments giving industry and jobs away to foreign businesses in far away places. No jobs, no hope. Britain is broken, not just Burnley!

I lived there too and escaped early 2000's. Can't say I miss it. The houses are cheap because the job opportunities and pay are terrible. The whole town is falling apart. Last time I was there they'd made some effort to do up the town centre, but step outside there and its like you've hit slums. I'm forever grateful I had the chance to get out, because not all of them can.

This is current economics.
A couple in our fifties from the Midlands. We both came up in council properties. Our families too. It was normal, for working (actually working but low wage) class people and not a stigma at all in my entire big town. You wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between council and privately owned in our area. In fact, many passed, seamlessly, into the private market through "right to buy" over the years. We all had, spotless, nicely decorated/furnished homes which we'd done up ourselves with our own wages. Not much drinking (Party, wedding, Christmas, etc and occasional nice evening out) and no drugs (yes, really). In 50 years, I only ever knew two scruffy households and they weren't anywhere near as bad as in this video.
The change came when it went from being classed as "council housing" to being classed as "social housing". That's the moment the authorities began to put the addicts, criminally minded, baby factories and work shy into the council houses. Now look where we are.
We still live in a council property in the same area as it's a very low wage area. It is a high rise. Our flat is the nicest one out of hundreds, according to council officials and repair personel who have visited. Don’t give me all this and that, about, "why should I pay to decorate somebody elses property", when renting council/social property. It's because the "I" has got to live in it.
We have less money per week than the average boozer/druggie throws away on their addictions. Then again, we work and are not afraid of cleaning products, DIY, paying our bills nor being sober.
Our area is no more well off than Burnley. Our industrial past is considerably blacker (that’s a clue) than that of Burnley. Our area was that bad it caused the death on many a resident. Past descriptions described it as hell itself, in the not too distant past.

Yeah I totally agree. I know it's not simple and people have real problems, but now it seems like people expect the government to provide everything and solve every problem. If my parents and grandparents didn't have something they worked to get it. Fixed their car or house themselves. Made or repaired clothes. I learned from them as well. Often the social landlords are far worse than private landlords wrt maintenance etc. because the social landlords can't get taken to court easily

Most of trouble was done by unreliable tenents and wasters, they had no issue looking using dole money on junk and ciggies. However they never had anything for the short fall in rent. A work mate used to live in Swindon most of the trouble is by the locals who don't care about their town there is no community. Encourage selling homes to the council for social help (But the gov/councils need to pay market prices and not rip people off)
Have more homeless shelters that give people a secure private space, have one for people addicted to substances and another for people who are not.

Get more understanding goverment workers. When I ended up in a homless situation I was basiclly told "No help for you because, single male working age". Why are we deciding on who gets help based on such things? Like the person in this video said "Your a nurse manage your own help" The attitude of some of the people supposed to help is really judgemental and dismissive.
Finally stop migration for at least 10-15years for anyone low skilled or dont already have a job and home in place before they arrive. We dont need more low skilled workers, the reason a lot of brits are not doing these low skilled jobs is because the pay is too low. Saying we need migrants here to do this work is saying "we need workers we can exploit for cheap labour who have less legal rights if they complain" Slavery is increasing in modern times because of this train of thought on migration and low skilled work.

I want to move to a better area if I can but not take on another mortgage. An ok 3 bed semi - like I own now is pushing £190K in Accrington. There are no cheap "liveable" houses, not really.

Even leaving from Luton airport the UK staff on the terminal were shouty and unfriendly, the vibe changed immediately as I stepped inside the plane with it's Polish crew. It's way calmer there, clean and safe which goes without saying but people are just calmer and more civilised. They are far politer than people here (I'm not saying British as we're a minority where I am). There are foreigners there but because they haven't had mass immigration, they behave like everyone there. For example an uber driver, who I think was Iranian judging by his name, only spoke Polish - which I don't have a problem with as I was in Poland and am able to greet and thank in Polish, and can speak a bit more( albeit broken) Polish if necessary, I don't expect everyone there to speak English although many do speak excellent English - and the directions to my hotel on his gps were in Polish, here in London it would probably be in Arabic or something.
Coming into Luton airport I noticed how grotty and run down it looks, and what is new just looks cheap. At the National Express coach stop the woman working got rude and snappy as she could barely speak coherent English so I couldn't understand her. Got off the coach link in London and before I'd even crossed the road to the tube station was accosted by a crackhead hassling me for money. On the tube a couple of ''roadmen'' strode through the carriages talking about how they're going to kill someone, probably bravado but still not conducive to a civilised atmosphere. It's horrible being back.
So rather than fix a bit of tarp or plastic over the toilet, Riaz lets his arthritic wife sit in the rain, unbelievable !

yeah i used to live in Burnley lived there from age of 3 months to the age of 19 i also worked on the bypass that broke Burnley, factories were closing down tumbling like a house of cards to make way for the bypass houses were force purchased, a friend of mine who lived in one of the houses parents refused the offers it was their family home for 3 generations so they were a bit reluctant to let it go, they were persecuted by the council and the police, the police raided their house often and when they did they ripped all the flooring up even to the point of ripping the plaster of the walls and ceiling as back then they were plastered over wooded slats on some older properties also all their furniture ripped open and just shredded, after a year of this they were forced out and didn't get a penny, everyone was told the bypass would bring more jobs and yet the opposite happened,

Shocking. I work in the construction industry i work with my team to do up properties, we dont cut corners we literally give 100%. I am seriously considering doing up properties like this and renting them to decent tenants.

Imagine this: help people get down payments to buy these dumps, then have a group that gathers together to repair them, one after another in a series. People can learn the skills, then be volunteering at the next one.
Start with one- as an example of what is possible. Get some traction.
In my neighborhood we help the elderly and disabled repair their places. It’s good for everyone.

They did a similar thing in Liverpool about 15 years ago where homeless people built a street of houses to live in, all for TV too. Then never heard of it again.

This is the sort of thing that the government should be bring in legislation about.
These homes should have to be subject to standards, and checked periodically by civil servants to make sure they are inhabitable.
The homes may be cheap but they have to be brought up to standards allowing human habitation.
No leaking roofs, no mould, no infestations of any sort, inspected electricity, plumbing and HVAC.
And any politician that votes against this should have to live in one of these places for a month.
I thought certain laws were in place regarding rental properties ie smoke alarms fire escapes etc of course privately rented accomodation ie friends or family would be outside this legislation if you know what I mean .
I also think council homes/private need to include a book or leaflet about how mold forms and other issues. I think a lot of the issues could be solved by informing people not familar with UK climate to avoid it becoming an issue. Yes landlords need to keep homes up to standards and be held accountable for sorting mold, damp, plumbing, infestations ect but lets be honest it isnt the landlord creating a lot of these issues it will be the tennets. They also need to do their part and nip issues in the bud rather than letting them get worse.
When the home I rented had mold, I took evidence, told my landlord and said I would clean and sort it as long as he was willing to pay for the materials to do it. Didnt cost me anything but time I would spend cleaning my living space anyhow, landlord had his house sorted for cheaper. It seems like people just expect someone to come round and clean for them?
Why aren't these slum landlords being prosecuted, including that slum housing association.

Why can private landlords offer practically derelict properties/rooms for rent that are void of any inspection or standards?
The knock on affect to the NHS (due to the damp and/or rat infested properties) is worryingly high.
The knock on affect to the NHS mental health teams seeing patients (who live in these appalling conditions) presenting with ever increasing levels of depression is increasing year on year.
The knock on affect to the police/crime rates in these shameful slum areas is, as can only be expected, ridiculously high.
Thanks to Margaret Thatcher, huge numbers of council housing were sold to existing tenants at greatly discounted prices. Doing this served one purpose only - to artificially show that government spending under her Tory rule was low. In actuality, the end result is a dire lack of affordable council houses, and with new builds being "thin on the ground," the future doesn't look great.
Councils ought to be buying these cheap (and rundown) properties. Refurbishment programmes, using local unemployed people, to bring the houses "up to scratch" could easily be brought into effect. The resulting rentable properties would then start "paying back" monies spent. Having good, rentable housing stocks makes total sense.

This doc did not tell you everything. No landlord leaves the tenant's home in a disgusting mess. That's the tenant's fault. Yes, landlords should be repairing things that need repairing, but the tenant has to try and keep their home clean and tidy. Also, how many of these tenants are addicted to substances and don't work? I understand the people who are physically or mentally disabled, but what about the rest? If you are unhappy with your housing and can improve your life and move to a more liveable place, do it!

Me too. Self reliance and DIY is my thing. That's what used to be the norm. Now, it's people who refuse to help themselves. Always waiting for the council/social landlord to do it. I've had mold in a rented property. I got rid of it, learned how to keep it out and redecorated with our own wages and elbow grease.
I don't understand how the man, with the arthritic wife, can't even be bothered to, as a bare minimum, put a tarpaulin over the roof and door of that outhouse. You can buy these things in a poundshop and he doesn't look infirm. I'd be able to sort that out, properly, and I've got serious health and mobility issues because of heart failure. I mean, you could even get that to flush semi properly with a cheap plastic cistern and a bucket to fill it with, if there's no water supply. The sewer pipe and bowl is there, wouldn't take much to bring it back to full service. Nobody wants to sort stuff themselves these days.

Did they consider moving to some country where it's warm but housing is equally cheap? Like in asia, for example?

The veteran claiming that calling the Police is regarded as being a traitor in Burnley is bullshit, it's just the people he mixes with. I used to live near Burnley years ago, got a cheap house on a decent street but a lot of them are slowly being demolished. It just takes time. Large areas have been redeveloped with brand new houses, Accrington Road a good example. New housing has also gone up near Duke Bar but its a ghastly part of Burnley. I wouldn’t buy a nice house next to a rough area, thats why most of Burnley needs knocking down. Make it a new town but its all about money, there isn’t any to do this on a grand scale.
Tenants. If your Landlord has a mortgage on the property, they are obliged to keep the property in good repair as part of the mortgage conditions. I suggest writing directly to the lender and enclose photos as evidence.
The Lender wants their investment in the property protected and will make the landlord carry out the repairs or the lender coukd repossess the property.
What a wise observation the homeless man living in his car, made! Even if illegal immigration was removed, homelessness, deprevation and unemployment would continue in Britain. As a non UK citizen, I am shocked and saddened to see the appalling conditions that these people are forced to live in in 2024. I seriously would have expected better treatment and administration from your government. Sadly, I have to remark that I feel some (I'm sure not all) of your political representatives ought to be collectively ashamed to have presided over this level of decline and poverty.
I notice that certainly these properties and living conditions are in a shocking state of disrepair and degradation, but if more effort was made to at least keep them tidy and clean, it would render living conditions more endurable, safe and healthy. In the poorest of times, previous generations would have scrubbed their homes clean with basic cleaning agents like soap and vinegar etc. It doesn't have to cost a lot to keep a home clean and tidy despite it's condition of disrepair. So government and landlords need to examine their consciences, but residents need to take a little more responsibility and pride in their lives too.
Actually there are some very nice areas of burnley , if you own a property its up to you to sort out damp ( or clean your toilet ) there are laws on rental properties , certain segments of the community have thier own property laws thats tougth nuff said.
Social housing needs massive improvement across the whole country not just in the north!

I lived in Burnley for 2 years in 1970s. I was very young so just appreciated my freedom but it is a rough but friendly place. . My home town is only 10 miles further into the countryside but like night and day really.
Allowing the homeless to beg and loiter in town centres has diminished the property value. I took my daughter to buy new trainers and we witnessed 2 smack heads digging up in a shop doorway, in view of the public. Its disgusting how this has become the norm.
maby we need to put loiters infront all overpriced blackrock owned propertys and make them loose money!
