Jaywick, Essex is widely considered to be the most deprived place in England over the last 10 years, having three times in that period being named as so. Many documentaries and videos during the past decade have portrayed the estate in a very negative context, focusing on the deprivation and antisocial problems of Jaywick and it's near non-existent infrastructure and decaying accommodation. This negative coverage is certainly not a full scale mistruth. Upon arrival into the estate, which is near to the larger town of Clacton-on-sea, I was shocked at the level of social deprivation and crumbling and rotten dwellings. I had, however, been told by others who had visited Jaywick of a wonderful sense of community and old-fashioned values amongst the residents. I had to visit for myself and meet the locals. Jaywick indeed suffers from unacceptable levels of deprivation, but what is life REALLY like for the people who live there? Join me to find out...

Quick question. I'm a fan of your videos and of this type of content generally. That said, why is it that you are driven to make these videos?
@TF2cv I was wondering if he had grown up in a deprived town and / or was trying to raise awareness about how far down certain towns had sunk. I personally think a lot about the uk around 2003 onwards as that's when I started my first little business, things were booming looking back! All the bars in town were open, all the highstreet chains were flourishing etc. I know people always tend to remember history fondly, but the current state of things seems pretty dire.

I'm an electrician and have worked extensively in Jaywick over the last ten years, carrying out work under council grants for folks with disabilities. Despite the mess and the obvious bad apples, the vast majority of the people there are decent and welcoming, even those without a penny to their name will make you a cup of tea and offer you a snack. There's a very old fashioned sense of mutual consideration about the place and I always enjoy working there. In summer the beach is wonderful. I would love to see the place brought back to a better state, it has so much potential. Thanks for another great video.

That’s the beauty of poverty. Back around the late 90s and early noughties there was a deprived village in Barnsley called Grimethorpe. At the time the most deprived village in Europe. Extremely run down. But the people there would all rally around to help someone when they fell ill. And they would give someone the shirt of their back, even though they didn’t have two apneys to rub against their backside. Poverty can bring these kinds of riches

I live in a rich town in the UK. Bins overflowing, litter everywhere, no police, no social services. You get the picture. How the people of Jaywick hang on is a testament to them and in spite of our government's underfunding of councils and hatred of ordinary people. Good luck to Jaywickers, except for the ones that make their neighbours' lives miserable. They can sod off. Top video.

You obviously have a weird idea of what a "rich town" is, but then you don't even believe it yourself as you don't mention the place.
As for "No Police" you don't see many Police in places such as say, Ascot but loads around Lewisham, the difference, Crime.
And Social services, again only needed by the poor & wasters

My town has a labour council in a sea of blue and yellow, and despite a multitude of multinational employers and fast rail into the capital is still underfunded due to huge growth. Compare with say Guildford, a less wealthy town overall, and the state of the environment and services is vast. In the context of Jaywick, take a quick look at Tendring DC on a wiki near you and you'll see a political situation guaranteeing it not to be prioritised by either Essex CC (Tory-controlled since 2001) or by the ultimate purse-clutchers in Westminster. I politely suggest you throw back your smug complacency and devise for yourself how the real world works. The Critical thinking club is so quiet these days, that all new members are welcome.
Cheapest permanent property in Jaywick is currently 60K for a 1 bed shack. UK property market has lost its marbles!
12 years ago they were going for 15-50K depending on condition.

I always find Jaywick videos interesting, because it shows that the most deprived areas of the country aren't necessarily the roughest. Like obviously there's a correlation, and Jaywick isn't without its problems, but it looks like you felt a lot safer here than some other, slightly less deprived (relatively speaking) places you've visited

I used to go on holiday to Jaywick every year as a kid. It was wonderful and I have many happy memories of the times spent there.

As a young lad, I used to come here on holiday with my sister and cousins, this would be 1959 to 65 roughly. We usually stayed in the same place at the end of Sea Pink way, right behind the sea wall. It was a thriving holiday place then. There was a cafe and ice cream shop on the beach and lots of families. We used to have ten shillings for the whole two week holiday. When that had gone we collected lemonade bottles from the beach and took them to the offlicence to get 3d back on each one. We spent hours in the amusements looking for pennies that people had missed. There was a horse racing machine that always seemed to have threepenny bits under neath which we fished out with a stick. A bag of chips was sixpence (2 1/2 p). Some of the holiday homes had Elsans which were empted at night. The "poo machines" as we called them, were ex airfield 3 wheel fuel tankers which were housed in a garage at the end of the main part of town near the car park at the end of the main part of town. There were 4 wheel cycles which you could hire but they were too expensive for us. After I had grown old enough to ride a Lambretta, I went back and was shocked to see the decline of the place and that was about 1969.
Yay, at last someone of my era! My memories much the same as yours, PLUS the haunting sound of the Everly Brothers ringing out around the chalets from the late night cafe's jukebox. That cafe did delicious fry ups and 'proper meals' too, for the parents.

OK I have to make a comment, I live in jaywick , I absolutely love it,when I lived in London I didn't even know my neighbours names ..here on the 1st day I moved into my bungalow my neighbours came out with cups of tea ..helped to move all my furniture, and of course we have the lovely sandy beaches ⛱️ what more could I want 😀

Just some context on Jaywick: After Butlins closed in 1983 many locals lost jobs and the town declined as the tourist industry did. Currently 40% of locals are long term disabled, 60% of working age people receive benefits and 60% of children receive free school meals
Worked at Butlins season 1982. Local people were great. Friendly and generous.

I rent out 2 houses there. And i keep them to a good standard, and honestly only make a small profit after covering the mortgages. But what does wind me up - is when they stop paying the rent, cos these days its given direct to them from Universal Credit - and you turn up, and find the boilers gone missing - and the floors in the property are covered in used needles.
I wont tar everybody with the same brush mind you - because once you know the locals they are a decent bunch. But my God - Everyone assumes that just because you own a couple of properties you must be loaded - its just paying for my pension contributions.
There's a rampant drug problem - and problems with theft and burglary.
It does upset you - when you have done the decent thing and provided a proper home - only to find out your tenant is a smackhead and ripped you off, copper wire an all.

I’m on UC and currently don’t work. I don’t and have never drunk, never smoked, definitely never done any drugs, I don’t even like taking paracetamol lol. But because Im poor, from poorer background, have autism and learning difficulties documented from the past, I’m basically automatically blacklisted in terms of renting. And because social housing is so hard now to get, it’s a total horror show. My only real option is so called emergency accommodation which isn’t exactly a nice proposition. From a certain point of view Im doing OK because I have Mum and step dad to keep a roof over my head, and they aren’t in the house and haven’t been for over 6 years now. I’m probably near about the most unusual ‘benefit claimant’ you’d come across I guess, but I’m sure there are many other like me who are perfectly able to live a civilised and polite existence. We just were born with certain conditions that make life more challenging.
Yet another landlord thinks they are "doing the right thing" by making money (you said for a pension) from the poorest in society. 🙄 Housing should NEVER be for profit. Sit down saint landlord. I'm no fan of drug addicts either but that's what the landlord or agents reference process is for.

I've moved from a very middle class town (that I grew up in) to a working class city area in Norfolk. I miss me mates from where I was from, but where I am now people are waaay more friendly and community minded. Local pub has made me feel so welcome, everyone on our road has been lovely. And it's obvious people look after each other, rather than just looking out for themselves and keeping up with the Jones's lol. Been here since 2019.

They have been trying for many many years .
For history it was a thriving seaside town up to WW11 they after the beach was closed and no one was able to come until the 50s because of mining t he beach and the army taking it over for for training, many of the homes became very decrepit.
Along comes the 50s and 60s and London gangs like the Crays etc who bought up many of the decrepit homes and put people desperate for a home in there charging huge rents for basically a beach chalet the place and people living there went down and down with many excriminals at people with Asbos Who couldn’t find housing elsewhere living there. Because who is not going to pay rent if your landlord is a London gang. The council have been trying to buy all the Jaywick properties for many many years but those that own it won’t sell.
They did manage only a few years ago to have it to be. Illegal for any building in Jaywick which they deemed not fit for human habitation to not be eligible for housing benefit but this has left even more dereliction as the worst places are allowed to rot even more.
Don’t blame Clayton council for those ills of Jaywick they can’t buy the land and the roads etc are on private land that the landlords don’t upkeep.

Have photographed Jaywick many times, the locals are always friendly.
I stayed in those little places in the 50' s, it was lovely, the promenade had massive holes in it from the 1953 flood, you could have fallen in them, no health and safety in those days
I would move there, for the old fashioned community spirit, sadly lacking where I am, no one talks to you, scared to go out...

Excellent video. Back in the 1970s being a child in East London had many day trips to Clacton, Walton and Jaywick. Clacton was my favourite day trip. Clacton had it all. It declined when Butlins closed down.

Too much investment will kill that place because you'll end up with new expensive homes that the locals can't afford.
That's the point. If someone is willing to risk investing in lots of cheap land by the sea and turns it into something expensive and awesome, that's called capitalism.
It’s better to leave that place alone and not invest in it because investing would damage the friendly community spirit by introducing wealth. Wealthy people are less friendly cos they are self sufficient. Poor communities rely on each other so they have better empathy skills. They need them. Investing money would harm the community spirit over time, leave the place alone. Investing there is harmful
I once worked in St Osyth, just up the road. The friendliest place I've ever been to and completely free of pretentions.

I just don't understand how this has happened, most of England's south coast is really nice you can travel from cornwall through Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Sussex and it's beautiful, you'd expect the property developers to be all over this.

wonder what clacton's council charges for removing sofas and mattresses etc, if they are as extortionate as other UK coucils then how do they reasonably expect people with no money to get rid of their old stuff. I totally agree. I live about 17 or so miles from Clacton, and phoned our council to enquire about the cost of taking away our old mattress. They said £65 quid to pick it up and take it to the dump. They did say you can add up to five items for £65, but if you've only got one thing the price is still the same, they don't make it any cheaper if you've got fewer items. Disgusting, where do they think people can get that kind of money from.

I have travelled to Jaywick many times during lockdown with my Dog as was a key worker, Amazing beaches at Jaywick and a great community spirit, I loved it, just the same as I love Boscombe! I love seeing the real UK.

Brilliant my friend. Pity they don't send all the boat people there and when they quickly go back to France the government could spend all the millions they saved on immigrants and use it to rebuild Jaywick.
If the gov saved money on immigration, they would spend it on themselves, never on helping those that need it. They have the money to fix towns like this but as the prime minister said himself, he is proud of taking money from deprived areas and giving it to rich, Tory-voting constituencies.

I live in oxford on a small farm that I inherited from my grandparents,it's nothing special.
But we suffer greatly from the economic decline as the council only trimmed the hedges near our stables once all summer ,and this really breaks my heart.

A friend says just the same, she works for the NHS all over Tendring and drives to Jaywick to check in on patients after physiotherapy, home care etc. She's always said despite Jaywick looking shoddy the people are lovely and they're always welcoming and grateful for what they have. I've been to jaywick many times and always had a laugh with good company. You go from being homeless in a city to here, beautiful sea air, good people. The 'roughness' of it seems to deter some people and we quite like that as it keeps the community feel alive. Never judge a book by its cover, jaywicks alright :) good video mate!! You are like the British Peter Santenello, keep up the good work mate.
As in the US, there are areas with multiple problems, but I always wonder why the powers that be don't just start with the most obvious (like the discarded furniture), hire local people at a decent wage to begin tackling the issue. As long as so much money is being put out on social benefits, why not put some of that money into salaries. All kinds of skills could be made use of, from painters and electricians to carpenters. The sense of 'what's the use' has to be changed, and I believe it will when people begin to see physical improvements happening.
But that's the problem; 'what's the use?' You try and put all you can into improvements only to have the scrotes throw ciggies, beer cans, and needles ont he pavements and everywhere else. They then spend their benefit money their 'olidizzz' and then come home and watch Eastenders of Hollyoaks. And low and behold if you've worked hard and have something nice, they'll just right along and scratch or vandalise it. I used to live in Clacton. Still have the nightmares and financial issues as a result of it.
The local authorities in the UK are all faltering financially, there's simply not enough money to go around and its a situation that has gradually worsened over the passage of years. If you're someone in power in the local authority, who has a say on how what little money there is gets spent, you will automatically look at this area as a black hole. If the locals don't make the effort to clear up after themselves then whatever you do will just be a band aid, and there are probably other communities who would benefit more from the investment.
Edit: Bit of a tangent, but whilst these people talk a good game, I'm not seeing much community spirit in actuality. Its one thing to say "the people are wonderful, I feel so safe", but a community is more than a group of mates sitting around a camp fire. Where I live for example, a rural community on the outskirts of London, almost everyone is somehow involved in keeping the area up to scratch. Weekly litter gangs of volunteers patrol the roads and foot paths, we have someone in the local authority who people go to if they have a concern about anything related to local governance - and it gets followed up immediately, and there's a whatsapp group for the community for people to speak to each other directly. Also the local Vicar makes house calls to homes that are known to be in trouble.
Maybe its just that we have stronger leadership than Jaywick; people who are willing to sacrifice their time and energy to make plans, perform unpaid public duties, and galvanize their neighbors into action. This would make sense perhaps because the area is rather affluent, a lot of lawyers, architects, farmers, etc etc. A deprived area probably has less educated people, or those who are not used to being put in charge of something? Who knows.
@@desertmammoth3159It's the eternal mystery. I was a social worker for 20 years. The people who have the most free time (i.e. those who have lived on benefits for generations) live in filthy apartments, making no effort to keep their living spaces clean, while the people I know who work full time - sometimes two jobs, keep their homes immaculate.
There is a little hidden area along the river with a small beach, where I used to go with my dog. Then it was 'discovered' by, how shall we say "the city people" and they turned it to trash. I used to bring a bin bag with me and try and keep up with the garbage and broken glass, but now I've just given up going there at all.
I live on a quiet dead end street - all older people, and none have money (including me), but everyone keeps their property spotless. There's a tiny wooded area on the end that's a cut through. I don't know who does it, but someone regularly tips crap over there. It's a filthy state of mind.

The people seem very friendly, I think it would be good for the area if they all came together to tackle the mess around. Clear it up into one big pile and demand the council to clean it up. People power makes a big difference.

Im from Suffolk but loved going to jaywick holiday park with the children as beach was amazing and we never found anyone but nice friendly people 🙂
It's nice to see Jaywick shown in a more positive light. Is it severely deprived and does it need a LOT of help? Yes, but I think I'd feel safe walking around there and it's important to highlight the good community. Also that guy's house is amazing. Thanks for sharing!

Not many places nowadays that have a great community spirit and look out for one another. That alone keeps them going. Just shows that no matter what the financial situation or living conditions some people can still be happy, kind and welcoming. This was a true eye opener, thank you for sharing this x

Apart from the fact the weather in east Anglia and especially the coast is pretty good often less than 500mm of rain a year in that part of Essex, lots of sunlight hours and hot summers

They should do community clean up. And work together. My old estate does it, group of volunteers because council gave up. And now council is piggy backing of their success acting like its their doing. When its not it was 100% community driven.
I live about 40 mins from clacton/ jaywick and there both very rough areas. When im around in clacton im always looking over my shoulder constantly
I did that while living there for nearly eight years.

Britain has an incredible variety of landscapes and lifestyles for a relatively small country, as well as a staggering number of accents and even different languages.
It's a fascinating country with friendly, helpful people. I've loved travelling through Britain.

I used to holiday in a caravan at St. Osyths in the 60s and 70s. We used to walk along the sea front into Jaywick. I remember the roads all being named after cars. There was a shop nearby that we always stopped at for an ice cream. Its sad to see how it is now.

So many happy memories of holidays at Clacton Butlins as kid. It still saddens me 40 years on that it closed down, Clacton and Jaywick are still suffering to this day. The area has so much potential, hopefully one day things will be better.
I can’t fault your videos, you’re honest and brave and present a well balanced view. One thing that did get my jip was that dollar reference in your ad. Its not. a disability ..its know as Obesity ..I was born in. the 40s grew up and played in the streets of Nottingham in the 50s ,, we didn't. have much. but we was happy kids making up our own fun most of my cloths and toys came from the Church Jumble sale ..cardboard in my shoes ....BUT I don't ever recall seeing anyone as they say today Obese because people walked or got the bus...I left Nottingham by myself in 1968 for a sunny life in Australia...🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴🌴

My English wife and I are trying to retire in England, as the USA has become a hot mess of guns and religious extremists…with guns. Watching your videos have become part of our morning routine, over breakfast, and really make us appreciate what England has to offer. Wendell, keep up the good work and good words.

Can’t wait to watch that tilbury town nothing no where, ghost town, Asda, small tescos, and coop, pubs none, restaurants to go out for a meal there isn’t none, no swimming pools nowhere, no shopping centres, no cinemas, couple of parks with not much in it, more like back in the 70s parks, no youth clubs,no where for kids, or the adults go go, bins are emptied every 2weeks, and make sure the lids down properly otherwise won’t be emptied, tilbury alrite if ur a hermit.
One park in tilbury town is daisy park where the swings and few other things to play on was taken out the park,
probly wen and sold it,🤣 pay off some of the debt.
Tilbury turdtown, take a face mask, smells like sewage is emptied everywhere, close the windows and air vents indoors wen it chucks up otherwise stinks indoors aswel.🤮
For such a good community, they should get together and sort it out themselves. Balls to the council, they are useless anyway, people need to take things into their own hands and sort their own communities out.
They do but sadly fly tippers who don't live in Jaywick think it's ok to dump it there !

I used to work in Jaywick as well as other places along the essex coast and its an eye opener as to how deprived the area is. Once i sat on the seafront next to an abandoned arcade where there was a carboot sale selling NHS zimmer frame, crutches etc. The buildings always reminded me of the village in 'The Prisoner' but very much run down.

I would say the people like Jaywick just the way it is and to just leave it alone. In a mad way it seems quite appealing to me to have somewhere where the government, huge supermarkets etc just leave you alone and are not interested. It would be lovely if the people took more pride. My head was like oh my god imagine a lick of paint and do plants in your garden etc lol
The problem like many places in the west now, is that most people rent, so they take no pride in their dwellings. I'm 34, and I live in Canada, I wish I could come home to my country. I would clean the streets for free.

I don't think just because you rent that you cannot have plants in your garden and be clean to be honest. I think that people are just scum bags. I seen some of them shaks in this video and thought wow just a lick of paint and some plants would make it boho chic. They are just tramps. I am pretty sure in this video Wendal might not have shown the people who do take pide in Jaywick as I bet there are some with nice shaks/gardens for sure x
I went about 18 years ago, stayed on a camp site in Jaywick, travelled to Clacton. Jaywick was fine then houses were ok it was fairly nice. The pier at Clacton pretty quiet, the guy on the fair blamed cheap package holidays. Enjoyed the holiday, we visited again at one point.
Love the couple and their house ❤really nice genuine people ,shame a lot more people aren't like them 😢

There's loads of lovely places to visit in the UK. The rough or poorer areas tend to get more programmes made about them. Just don't go Jaywick. 👍🏻 Or Clacton. 😂

Michael, there are many thousands of normal, nice, pleasant and beautiful places in Britain to welcome visitors. The only reason this (and other) deprived areas get this kind of film made about them is BECAUSE they are the exceptions to the rule, and sadly our Government don't choose to improve them.
Come to Britain & enjoy us at our best, or even at our 'normal', please do not judge us by a click-bait amateur video.
@michaelschleussinger9541 - Why are you cancelling your trip to England, after watching this one youtuber's videos??? Not everywhere has fallen to the condition of poor Jaywick Sands area!! He highlighted how bad this particular area has fallen, and it is not a fair or balanced report of the whole area itself! He is not being honest, he is only showing the worst parts! For example, in regards to Jaywick, there are many lovely roads and very well kept houses in Jaywick. Go on to Google maps and satellite view, look around Golf Green Road, Jaywick, further in-land from Jaywick Sands. Look for the Golf Course and go further up, in-land, where it is green, rural. You will see the other side of Jaywick. There are so many wonderful, beautiful places in the UK. You have made a blanket decision, seemingly believing everywhere over here is like Jaywick - which is not true - without doing any of your own proper research, so you will miss out seeing and enjoying way more good than bad. In regard to Jaywick, there are plans to rejuvenate the area over the next few years, to re-develop it. I will do a video myself of the other and much better side of Jaywick - that he has not bothered to visit and show - and advise you, so you can view a balanced report of the area.
Hello mate, I drove through Jaywick last year when my daughter and I stayed at a friend's lodge on one of the holiday parks a bit further down the road. It was a pretty sorry sight to see. To be honest I never met any of the people as we were a bit concerned about stopping, quite a few people were milling around in some large groups which looked a bit concerning but when you see a post like this it just shows you can't judge a book as they say and that it shows how the community look after each other. I think if a lot more people saw a post like this the place wouldn't get so much bad press when people realise. All places have bad parts I mean I live in Sunderland and we have had our fair share of the same, not as bad as Jaywick but some poor bits all the same. Good luck to the people there. A great community with a warm, neighbourly spirit. There’s a big difference between being deprived and being poor; a “make do and mend” mentality which is something many of those better off know little about, particularly when visiting Jaywick where kindness and generosity are in abundance in most places. Money can’t buy that. And that’s something everyone could learn a lot from. Yes, it is run down but you could also say the local authorities are just as much to blame for allowing it to happen.
