@@williebobs3830Your comment proves that you are utterly ignorant and infinitely less intelligent than a turd: Ever since the Tories got elected in 2010 they have made drastic cuts to all public services and local councils, and public sector wages have been stagnant for 20 years in relation to the cost of living at present. Councils can only do so much which depends on the funding from the Central Government. I'm not saying that local councils spend every penny wisely, but since 2010 this country has been reduced to a sewer.
@@williebobs3830 It is though. The reason for deprivation in these towns is directly caused by neo-liberal economic policy implemented in the 80's. Send the jobs & manufacturing offshore, cut local spending, and rely on the myth of "trickle down" economics and this happens. Most people dont make the connection tho and the same governments keep doing the same thing to benefit their corporate buddies
It's bizarre how the government is allowing this country to go to rot, you'd think they'd be on the side of the property developers but no, they're letting everything collapse.
My family used to take me & my cousin to Great Yarmouth in the early 90's, every year. Then later on in the late 90's, myself & friends used to come down in a Campervan & it was brilliant. Seeing the place now makes me really sad. it is hard to describe how great it was back then, it was like another world, I miss old Great Yarmouth. .
Those waterways were a childs dream. I remember when I was a lad back in the 50s. Dad would take me on a boat and as it went round the winding waterways on the banks were moving figers. Night time was best as they all lit up. Memories 🙂
Old bloke was was pretty correct about the Italians & Greek Cypriots when they came a few decades ago. They created great food establishments during Yarmouth's golden years of the seaside and employed many people.
I was there early 90’s as a young kid with my parents, circa 92/94 and I’ve got such great memories. So sad to see, pretty much like the rest of the uk in general and all seaside resorts.
Please please please do the seaside town Hartlepool, The Headland. It’s where I’m from, was once a prosperous fishing town and known for being called monkey hangers lol😂
This has made me quite sad. Great Yarmouth was the first place in GB I visited on a school exchange program some fifty years ago. It used to be such a lively merry place.
Hippodrome Circus is worth a visit. Built in 1903 It is one of only two purpose-built permanent circuses in England still in operation, and one of only three in the world with a circus floor that sinks into a pool. They put on a great show. The town has a totally different vibe in the summer.
Out There Festival is also great for circus and street arts. Out There Arts is looking to transform the empty Ice House on the quay into an international centre for circus and is getting the local community involved in creating artwork for it.
Great Yarmouth has a wonderful beach, pier and promenade. It is let down by a lack of original shops and, not to be unkind, substandard accommodation. People's expectations are higher nowadays but if you are going to pay £60 a night for a room then you shouldn't have mismatched furniture and an outdated bathroom in your hotel room. Local businesses struggle because the council does not invest sufficiently in the town to make it a desirable destination. But I still visit every year because I love the sea and I know these businesses need our custom. Fish and chips are fabulous and there is also a great Vietnamese restaurant. Great Yarmouth could be an absolute jewel.
@daryld4457 . I so agree.. went for a day out with friends, I think the birds eye factory is a must!!!!... shame the yobs smashed the "Ness".... never again.....
It’s a real shame to see the ornate late 19th century architecture of the guest houses in decline. PLEASE SOMEONE invest in this once great town and bring it back for the residents and staycationers alike

I live in Norwich. Yarmouth is only 30 mins away by train. It is what it is. If you want a bit of beach and some okay eating places it's fine. I certainly wouldn't want to live there. When I was young and living in Hertfordshire, my family had lots of holidays in caravans in Yarmouth. It was great as a kid but over the years I've certainly seen a decline unfortunately.
@@chrisbutcher3280 Well it's just your opinion. Norwich is a fantastic city. Great transport links, an airport, great shopping, loads of music venues, lots of wide open spaces, historical buildings. Yes, it has its social problems but what city hasn't?
Grew up in Gorleston on the other side of the river and can honestly say that Great Yarmouth has gone down hill massively in the last fifteen years. I was back on the market place a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday morning for the first time in eight years and could not believe how few people were about and how bad it was. It's a shadow of what it used to be.
I just randomly saw your film today. Excellent work may I say. Well edited and presented. First class which is more than can be said for our poor old Blighty these day. Thanks for sharing.....
Poor Great Yarmouth suffered a number of catastrophes. Once one of the great commercial ports of England (amazing surviving architecture here and there). The war did huge damage, the planners finished that off afterwards. The Herring (remember it was massive fishing port) were overfished and went away. Finally, as a holiday destination it struggles with package deals. Yet still, it has possibilities.
I used to go to Great Yarmouth when I was a teen (1990s). I went there again roughly 10 years later and my god had it gone to ruin. Loads of heroin users and crack houses. Quite the eye opener. Very depressing. I'd never go there again. Hard, class A drugs have taken over.
Well done mate another brilliant video. The way you deliver and your point of view is spot on. You've actually got me thinking that I should be doing a lot more for people less fortunate than me so keep up your good work for what you are doing can only be for the good 👍 thank you Keith ❤
My grandparents lived near there in the 70s/80s and it was a lovely place to go. Now sadly it has become like the rest of Britain under the vile conservative party. Unlivable and depressing!

Spot on. The old 'slagging match' in parliament with the supposed 'opposition' seemingly just toeing the line. I think things have noticeably declined since the year 2000, but definitely accelerated since. Although I don't think there is a single reason for the decline. I have a lot of happy memories of Great Yarmouth and still go there for holidays 😊 The vibe is very different depending on if its summer or winter, but no matter what the locals are always friendly and inviting.
A friend of mine worked for a council for about a year, during which time, he and colleagues hardly ever did a full days' work. It might be different now, but if councils did their job and smartened up their towns, more people would come, rather than be put off.
I thought they were going to refurbish the winter gardens. Hello from Lowestoft. Me and my kids go to the Fair Freights during the Halloween week. In Yarmouth, and it's awesome.
This breaks my heart.Thank God I have such wonderful memories of caravan holidays at South Dene caravan park, fishing in the docks with my Grandad.Such lovely afternoons in the Winter Gardens.
Yes! I just got in with a Chinese and you've done my home Town. Hahaha. Sad I didn't see anyone I know on there though. It's horrendous. What he said about people accepting that there are only jobs for 8 months of the year is true. There's absolutely nothing there. At least 90% of people are on the dole. If you live in Yarmouth you've admitted that there's no point in you being alive. I left in 2016 to join the Army and basically never went back. I did have a few months there last year just to see, and never again. Everyone is just on the dole and selling drugs. They think it's good to be like that. Disgusting mess.
That's not the case though it. 90% of the peopke aren't on the dole at all, that's just feeble sensationalist nonsense. Good job you left, you obviously couldn't contribute anything positive.
Me and my Grandad (God rest his soul) used to come up to Yarmouth to spend time in the arcades. A little flutter, nothing serious. But we'd have lunch up there, talk about things, Yarmouth may not be amazing to live in.... but it is symbolic to me. I wish I could go back and relive those memories.
I have lived in Yarmouth for about 3 years now. Love the history of the town (every street seems to have a blue plaque) shame that many of the inhabitants seem unaware of that history and you look at pictures of the town in its heyday and think "what happened?" That said, the locals are all nice, some are a bit rough around the edges but you can hardly blame them for what is the result of years of neglect from politicans etc The sea front is still lovely to walk down (though I tend to walk away from the "golden mile" with all the tacky amusement arcades) and in summer I can think of nowhere else I would rather be, the town really comes to life, fireworks every Wednesday evening, events during the day, the town full of holidaymakers
Sorry to be the breaker of bad news. This year the fireworks in Hemsby and Yarmouth will not be going on unfortunately. The organisation that delivers those firework displays has moved its biggest event of the year to may and everyone involved will be busy organising that.
Saw a video about people finding basements under their houses where they'd been houses in the past and built on and covered up to be discovered with period correct wallpaper and artifacts from over the yrs
Dance paradise kept yarmouth buzzing for the early 90s , but compared to ingoldmills down the road it was still a shithole. Its alwayd been a place your nan+grandad would choose. That says it all. I live local in east anglia, short step from ALL these places.
We used to love the two days we would moor up in Yarmouth when we went on holiday to the broads in the 80s. The excitement of chugging through breedon water to get there . I was a teenager my sister in primary school
I’m from Norwich, dad was born and raised for most of his childhood in Yarmouth. My mum worked late shifts when I was a kid so my dad would often take myself and my sister out to Yarmouth during weekend daytime while my mother was sleeping. We would just walk along the beech, have ice cream and sometimes dip into the amusements for a laugh on the 2p machines. It’s a strange one for me because even as a kid I knew the place was run down and actually it was much worse back then in terms of empty buildings and hopelessness (if you can believe that) because in recent years they have spent money on the seafront just revamping the place and making it look better, all the same I have a lot of nostalgia and even now when my family go for the odd trip out to Yarmouth I will jump at the chance. I have large extended family in Yarmouth and even though I’ve never lived there it is like a second home to me. My most recent visit was shocking. The place is packed full of migrants. People give you strange looks and don’t speak English. Posters for missing people are very prominent and once you’re off the seafront Yarmouth is still dingy and run down. My brother, sister and young nephew were walking on their own when I noticed groups of migrant men leering at my sister, I immediately accompanied them because I feared for her safety. It’s all very sad.
Holidays to Yarmouth were the highlight of my year in the 60s. My Gran lived in Bradwell in a prefab... We would go to Yarmouth beach and have to hunt for a space while Dad went to hire deckchairs, ( for the adults!) Returning this summer and will enjoy the visit, the beach and the memories
Busy in the summer as all UK seaside towns are. It doesn't help that school children can only be taken to these places during holidays since heavy fines are put in place otherwise.
Nice to see the bloke at the end with a bit of positivity. Thing is with the deprivation of Britain we can all chip in together in the community to clean the area up a bit. I believe people on benefits should be made to do 20 hours a week community service to get there money. The towns and cities will soon get there pride back. And cash strapped councils can save on labour
@TriviaChallenge no covid did.and Gordon Browns 159Bn defict mess he left the County with, which caused the problems in the Cameron era. OK, the torys fuxked the country with brexit but these towns voted for it. Besides what's the NHS got to with a gradual decline in an industry and a town
@TriviaChallenge what has NHS treatment got to do with the gradual loss of an industry.resulting in the decay of a town. I noticed you forgot about the chineese wuhan virus, which had massively cause back logs or the 159Bn defict Gordon Brown left us with.
I used to live in Yarmouth; I used to holiday there every year as a boy until the chance came to move. But after a flood in the house, I was forced to move outside Yarmouth and all the move did was make me realize how much I miss Yarmouth - though now I wouldn't wanna move back. A lot of the areas are rough but as strange as it sounds, I feel safer in Yarmouth than I ever did in Birmingham. You can't get me to say anything bad about Norwich though
We always visit Great Yarmouth in May when the promenade is fresh and clean, it’s beautiful in spring and summer and we’ll continue to stay in Yarmouth as we have for the past 50yrs. I am sorry though, to see what a struggle it has been for its vast community.
Great vid! I live in Lowestoft down the road from Yarmouth. I've visited Yarmouth time and time again as a kid and still do now as an adult. I agree it's gone downhill a bit but however, I feel it still has more to offer than Lowestoft has by a mile!
Maybe you should interview the landlords making money out of hmo's and a manager of Bet Fred. They're doing okay. The Tories are behind the deterioration. Manipulating the masses to benefit the few.
I am a born & bred Guernsey girl and lived in South Norfolk for 10 years (from 2005 to 2015). I went to Yarmouth a few times over those years and personally didn’t find it that bad. Used to take my daughters to the beach and swimming. Obviously it was never going to be as lovely as our Guernsey beaches but we enjoyed our times there. Possibly Yarmouth has gone downhill in the 9 years I’ve been back in Guernsey. Was interesting to see the puppet man in the video as I used to see him a lot in Norwich when I worked there. Bit of a local legend!
I live not far from Gt Yarmouth, in Norwich. It’s really not as bad as made out in this video. The clientele isn’t the best. It does have a reputation amongst us Norfolkers for being a bit downmarket, it is a typical run down seaside town but it’s a good laugh for a day out. And they have put a lot of money into rejuvenating the town centre. It’s far from Knightsbridge, but it’s also far from the odious, baron monstrosity being portrayed in this video
When I grew up in the fifties and early sixties, we use to visit relatives in Norwich and going to Yarmouth was the highlight of the holidays. In 1968, I actually worked at a holiday camp there. It's tragic to see these old places run down. I lived near Newquay in Cornwall and my first return visit from Australia after fifty years left me rather 'neutral' on the place. Stayed in great hotel on the cliff tops but even that's gone since we were there in 2014. Padstow was quite the reverse. Use to be a sleepy little fishing village; now look at it. The influence of Rick Stein I believe.
It's frightening what's happening to our beautiful country, God Bless and help us all.

😂
This has made me quite sad. Great Yarmouth was the first place in GB I visited on a school exchange program some fifty years ago. It used to be such a lively merry place.
Hippodrome Circus is worth a visit. Built in 1903 It is one of only two purpose-built permanent circuses in England still in operation, and one of only three in the world with a circus floor that sinks into a pool. They put on a great show.
The town has a totally different vibe in the summer.
its an excellent town, just needs a lick of paint!
Great episode, go to Lowestoft next please I think it's even more deprived
Depraved, I lived there for a few years, it's a sh1thole only good for drunks and druggies.
Lowestoft's a paradise compared to yarco
Haha are you serious, Lowestoft is an absolute hole, least Yarmouth gets tourists in the summer, who on Earth goes on holiday to Lowestoft 😂😂
@daryld4457 . I so agree.. went for a day out with friends, I think the birds eye factory is a must!!!!... shame the yobs smashed the "Ness".... never again.....
Lowestoft is a dead town nothing there for anyone lol 😂
My parents used to take me here when i was a kid late 80s every year though till about 95 some of my best memories .

Norwich is a shit hole now
@@chrisbutcher3280 Well it's just your opinion. Norwich is a fantastic city. Great transport links, an airport, great shopping, loads of music venues, lots of wide open spaces, historical buildings. Yes, it has its social problems but what city hasn't?
Norwich is one of the few remaining English cities not to be flooded with Muslims and enrichers.
@@chrisbutcher3280 You are right there.
Don't fall for the left / right scam
Neither are your friend
the lady mentioned the decline from the 80's/90's - I don't think the blame can be laid on one political party, they are all the same !
@@markosmith8037 I could not agree more with you, Yes they are all the same and as bad as each other. But the tories have finished things of the most the past 14 years. In the 70s Yarmouth was lovely and in the 80s it was pretty good too. Shame seeing it like this now, a real shame.
Spot on. The old 'slagging match' in parliament with the supposed 'opposition' seemingly just toeing the line. I think things have noticeably declined since the year 2000, but definitely accelerated since. Although I don't think there is a single reason for the decline. The local councils don't seem to do anything constructive to encourage visitors. @@waynesmith4612
Don`t matter which party it is their agenda is not the same as the common person. The left and right both use the same pot . Its time for a change of political direction .
I've never personally been in t he off season, but during the summer on the main strip the place is buzzing a full of life
Just a fantastic place growing up. I will move back one day.. despite the decline..
I used to work down there a lot,I’m from Aberdeen and I’d been there a week at times.
This was mid nineties and it was decent,We went out on the pish and had great times 🏴
Conservative Brandon Lewis has been the local MP since 2010. What has the government been doing for the good people of Great Yarmouth all this time?
Making drastic cuts to all public services and local councils, that's what they have been doing.

Welcome to Britain....bring ALL the family and friends....
I think it was a joke. He'd rather not comment on the current state of Yarmouth
I have a lot of happy memories of Great Yarmouth and still go there for holidays 😊 The vibe is very different depending on if its summer or winter, but no matter what the locals are always friendly and inviting.
I took my two kids ( Cypriot there ) now we been all over the world and they loved it !
use to be lot of greeks there late 70,s
A friend of mine worked for a council for about a year, during which time, he and colleagues hardly ever did a full days' work. It might be different now, but if councils did their job and smartened up their towns, more people would come, rather than be put off.
I thought they were going to refurbish the winter gardens. Hello from Lowestoft. Me and my kids go to the Fair Freights during the Halloween week. In Yarmouth, and it's awesome.
Wow ! I can't believe the state of the Winter Garden now ! what a shame ! Great Yarmouth was great in the 60's, good in the 90's and fooked in 2024 !
Yep, funding secured to revamp it
Fair Play. This video is a very fair reflection of the town. I hope to see it improve. Keep up the good work.
It's what you want and make of great Yarmouth. I love great Yarmouth
Same. We go every year
This breaks my heart.Thank God I have such wonderful memories of caravan holidays at South Dene caravan park, fishing in the docks with my Grandad.Such lovely afternoons in the Winter Gardens.
Happy to review your homeland 🫡
That's not the case though it. 90% of the peopke aren't on the dole at all, that's just feeble sensationalist nonsense. Good job you left, you obviously couldn't contribute anything positive.
Yarmouth is life❤
Bit daft visiting a seaside town in nov/dec/jan and expect to get a good idea of the place. The minds of our youth creators.😮
I went there for holiday nearly 40 years ago and it was brilliant😊😢😢
When I was a wee boy in the 80's every year I was taken to Great Yarmouths Vauxhalls caravan park. The Beach was packed.
I am 52 and have some wonderful memories as a child during summer holidays
Please return in the summer and hopefully it’s a bit more lively
No money in a good news story
Me and my Grandad (God rest his soul) used to come up to Yarmouth to spend time in the arcades. A little flutter, nothing serious. But we'd have lunch up there, talk about things, Yarmouth may not be amazing to live in.... but it is symbolic to me. I wish I could go back and relive those memories.
I have lived in Yarmouth for about 3 years now.
Love the history of the town (every street seems to have a blue plaque) shame that many of the inhabitants seem unaware of that history
and you look at pictures of the town in its heyday and think "what happened?"
That said, the locals are all nice, some are a bit rough around the edges but you can hardly blame them for what is the result of years of neglect from politicans etc
The sea front is still lovely to walk down (though I tend to walk away from the "golden mile" with all the tacky amusement arcades)
and in summer I can think of nowhere else I would rather be, the town really comes to life, fireworks every Wednesday evening, events during the day, the town full of holidaymakers
Such a shame could be beautiful, thanks for sharing.
We used to love the two days we would moor up in Yarmouth when we went on holiday to the broads in the 80s. The excitement of chugging through breedon water to get there . I was a teenager my sister in primary school
Whether or not the old bloke at the start does pay his council tax or not he's right UK is left to rot
I like going to the races at Yarmouth. Harry Ramsden’s for supper afterwards and then home. A good day out.
You get fined for taking your kids to the seaside at weekends? Wtf 🤔
The guy in green top with glasses is one of the 'mellors' that family get everywhere...😂😂😂
Ive been coming to Yarmouth 65 yearsi still love it.
13 years of Tory rule and no one can even afford teeth these days. Very sad state of affairs.
Nothing to do with tory rule. Their main industry is tourism. Air planes had the biggest impact..
@@mrwideboy So air planes and tourism stopped them from getting an NHS dentist? Riiight.
