I can attest to this. SmallRig mini Matte Box works with circular ND filters. All my filters are 82mm and magnetic. Makes everything so easy to install.
I also use magnetic 82mm filters. How would this work with this matt box in terms of mounting different lens etc. Can I keep the magnetic circular filter rings on all my lenses and then just snap on the VND for example all while also having this matte box?. Primarily I like to be able to quickly swap out my lenses and because I have magnetic rings on them all (82mm) I don;t ever have to worry about screwing anything on anywhere . I this still possible or do I now need 82-95mm adapter on all my lenses?? Sorry I'm not 100% clear

would this work with K&F VNDs that have the little orange tabs that you can rotate with? is there enough space to accommodate them?
the only thing i didnt like about all this is that you need to adjust the ND filter from the front and you can accidentally touch the ND filter leaving fingerprints on it, the rest is beautiful
Nice and informative video. I was planning to invest in this matte box myself for my camera too. :) Tip: Kindly lower the background music when doing these reviews/tuts. It kinda "hinders" your voice to sound clear and good. It also overlaps your voice a bit.

That is not a stupid question at all. All the videos I watched I didn’t understand that either. That’s why I had to try it out and make a video myself. Correct it will be 72mm.

Hey! great video, but one of the points of a matte box is to be able to use the same filter for all of your lenses, I don't see how this is possible if you have to screw the nd to the lens adapter. Then the only option you have is go with the rectangular filters, right?
To use the same filter with all of your lenses, you need the MATTE BOX 4x5 filter, not the circular filters.

Did you get Vignetting with this Setup? ND Filter is pretty far away
Changing ND stops on front of the box, not super easy. It's really hard to change. Easy way on the Nisi Filter Matte Box C5, on the top of the box and with option to connect follow focus motor to change nd stops. But nisi c5 price is 500$😄

I don't think there is any vignetting but let me test my tamron 17-28 tomorrow.

So, if my lens (cinema) is 95mm, I could not use that variable ND. I have to use the 4x5 on the front. DANG. I wish a 95 ND Variable would screw into the matte box.

Just tried this exact same set up with with the Freewell Variable ND 82mm, and it doesn’t fit. The rim of the ND won’t fit inside the Mattbox hole. Anyone else experienced this and have a fix?

Unfortunately it does not work with Freewell magnetic VND filters that have a diameter of 82 mm. The recess in the matte box is too small, so the filter is too large on the outside. With 77 mm and smaller it will work with a step-up ring.
Dam, I wish I’d seen this before ordering. I’ve just figured this out for myself. Very annoying! Have you changed and filters or found a fix?
I couldn‘t fix it. But I don‘t use the Matte Box that much and use it with smaller lenses than 82 mm.

Will this work with the K&F 82mm VND + CPL filter? It has 2 knobs for VND adjustment, will it fit or will it touch na mattebox and prevent it from the knobs being turned? thanks

@@Tonellacam Yeah, ditch the K&F VND+CPL and went for the NISI VND. Fits the mattebox mini well.

@@Tonellacam Not true, im using NISI VND Trucolor too, you can unscrew the filter anytime even with the smallrig matte box mini on the lens. Make sure were talking about the same matte box, LITE vs MINI are different matteboxes from smallrig.

Great vid, I'm curious though about the Tiffen black pro on the lens then the VND mist on the matte box. That's two different mists stacked, how come you stack mists and do they have any negative effects working against each other?

Can you explain to me more in detail your problem. It sounds like you don’t have the knob that is on the matte box tight enough.

I need help. I have a Sony A9 and a Tamron 17-28mm lens and I’ve tried multiple variable ND filters but get a lot of vignette even at the 22mm focal distance. What filter do you recommend? I’ve tried larger filters with step down rings but want a system that would work with my lens. I’m open to larger square ND filters and it doesn’t have to be variable. I’m shooting only video outdoors in mostly bright light. Thank you.

I don’t use side panels. Typically the sun is coming in from one direction therefore you can rotate the matte box to block the light

I have an 82mm vnd with a metal knob on it for turning the filter. How much room does the PM 82mm leave inside the matte box? I’m worried that with the metal knob on my Kase filter, there won’t be enough room to turn it

@@JanHubacekif it's one of those little round and rifled knobs/pins, they're usually threaded and can be unscrewed from the filter.
Might need a pair of pliers to losen it the first time.
It won't work with with the pin attached as it will hit the matte box and not allow you to turn the filter to all stops.
If have an 82mm pro mist filter and an 82mm variable nd. Can I attach these to the Matt box at the same time or will I need a different size for one of them? Thanks for the video
So there’s no 82 to 95mm step up ring? Damn.
It depends some filters don’t have treads on the front of them. ie the Peter McKinnon VND does not have threads of the front of it so I have to put my mist on my camera first and than I can screw my VND on top of it. Hope that helps

Yes you can use a circular and a square filter but you have to be leery of ghosting. So really pay attention or you will go to edit the footage and be disappointed
@@AOJOPhotographyOk thanks, and the ghosting isn’t an issue with the two circular lenses? To be honest I don’t know how you connected the Tiffen 67mm filter and then the adapter on top of it? (To be fair my first camera is coming in the mail so maybe it’s obvious then) It does not look like the Filter had a way to connect? Also will I need aftermarket step up lenses. As am starting at 58mm for my lens.
