Thank you, I tried a lot of conversion LUT’s back then so not sure which one I used. But there's a set of conversion LUT’s on Sonys pro section for fx6 that compensate for +1 and +2 stops over exposure that I use these days. The rest was just good light ;)
I found your channel after reading your review on Cokin's website and would really love if you could do a review on the variable ND's performance with some examples!
@@thomasfransson thanks so much for replying! Looking forward to it. You have really great videos by the way, I'm sure you'll become one of the bigger channels in no time 🙂
thanks for the demonstration, I am struggle with this one and Pro with two side barns, the price is doubled, so do you think that no need to get side barns?
Yeah mine hade those too, but I just unscrewed them, they always got stuck on things and also didn't allow me to use a protective silicone cap for the filters. I think you would need a huge matre box to clear those levels.
Yes you can, you would need to pop the square filter/filter frame out when adjusting the circular filter though. For some types of shoots this might not be a major inconvenience.
Awesome video! You seem like such a friendly guy!! Also, if the right adapters were purchased, would this work on the sigma 18-50mm? It's such a small lens...not sure if the weight of the matte box would hurt it lol
Thank you! It would definitely work, the adapter kit - 3383 contains a 55mm adapter ring that'll fit the lens. The matte box is very light weight so I wouldn't worry.
I have not, I've only added a solid circular ND behind and in front of my VND when shooting with some really fast glass. I typically only run into these issues shooting outside running and gunning - so a square filter would obstruct the VND and make it more difficult to make adjustments on the fly.
@@thomasfransson you mean , we will have to slide out and adjust it , again slide it back in there , but , other than that , even it is circular filter stacking or the method i said above, both will work right ??
Both will work. I'd use square filters for longer more stationary shots where they lighting will be fairly consistent. And circular if you’re moving the camera a lot.
Great video! Thank you 🎉. I have an 82mm pro mist filter and an 82mm variable nd filter. Am I able to attach both of these to the Matt box or will I need a different size for one or the other?
Most likely you should be able to rock as usual since the extra filter builds outwards and the mattbox gets wider and bigger the further from the front element it gets. That said, I have seen one comment here about one brand of 82mm vnd's having a thicker outer diameter. To big to fit the matte box. So that's the only thing to keep in mind probably. Sadly my pro mist is 72mm (yeah I know =/ ) So I can't add it directly to my 82mm VND to test it out for you.
hey mate, i have a lens with 46mm diameter, i also have a step up ring to 67mm, would i be able to mount the matte box by using the 46-67mm and then the 67-95mm? cheers 🙏🙏
I have a question about the vnd with this matte box. So i have an a6700 and sigma lens with 55mm diameter. I think of buying a vnd, but not sure if i have to buy it with the same diameter as my lens, or a bigger one. Using vnd with matte box in the way you showed it I'm afraid of getting some type of vignetting, cuz filter will not be attached directly to the lens and will have a little space from it. Can you give me your opinion on this? should i buy vnd with the same diameter as my lens or have a bigger one? Thank you!
When it comes to filters i always recommend getting a larger diameter than your current "biggest" lens. Preferably 82mm as these will fit almost every lens you'll come across (before moving into some cine lenses and what not) On smaller lenses 67 or 72mm might be a more compact alternative. And apart from elevating any risk of vignetting from a bad filter or matte box adapter ring, it'll probably save you money down the road if you buy a lens with a larger filter diameter.
Should I get this or the non lite version, as far as I’m aware the non lite adds a screw hole on bottom to lock it in place, and I saw some comments saying that’s important but the normal mount looks good enough idk.
Yeah that's one of the benefits, that mounting point allows you to mount the matte box to rods instead of just having the on lens option. If you're switching lenses often on a shoot this may be a perk.
Can't you just wind up the hood to limit the luminous flux? Unless, of course, you need to very precisely control the flow of light from different sides, open it somewhere, close it somewhere.
Not sure if I understand completely - This matte box has one flag and the matte box can be turned 360 degrees like I show in the video. In most scenarios you'll be alright working with this type of matte box, without the additional/optional side flags. The problem with most regular matte boxes is that they often times mounts to rails instead of the lens itself. A rail mounted matte box can't be turned like this one.
I've only shot with a 45mm 1.5X But given the fact that a 1.5X anamorphic lenses will have a field of view similar to a 23mm lens (if you’re shooting on a full frame camera) and that smallrig claims this matte box to clear up to 15mm wide angle lenses without any vignetting. We should be able to assume that 35mm would work without any vignetting.
I use 82mm vnd's but that's the largest size this matte box can handle. There are vnd's with grips and super thick outer rings that may be an issue to fit though.
According to the specs it should clear a 95mm filter diameter. I'm guessing you didn’t buy the additional adapter ring kit Smallrig 3383 for 95mm filter threads?
@@thomasfransson yeah I see what your saying but their website states it will fit a 95mm lens. So I don't need an adapter, it just doest fit as advertised. If I did need one it would be 95mm to 95mm hahaha
Yes, absolutely! Cirkular mist filters if you need access to the vnd when running and gunning. And you can slap a square mist filter on to the matte box when shooting in controlled environments.

Question: Can you still rotate the ND filter with a lever mechanism like the NISI ones
Great vid, man.
Those levers have threads on them and can easily be screwed out to make it work in the matte box.
@@thomasfransson I was just worried if the lever will hit the edges of the matte
box. Thanks, man.

Hey thanks for the great video, i don't know if you told it in the video but is it possible to add an second flag to mount on the rig?
Yes, these are available on the smallrig website. There's a couple, so make sure you get the right one.
The T-shirt 😂😂👌👏
Would have been a great camera.
i got the latest Haida VND 3-7 stop with polariser , which has a small filter turning knob , will i be able to use the matter box with that ND filter?
A lot of times those knobs can be screwed out. Two of my vnd's had similar ones and could be removed.
The shirt is great but is that also a collective arts hat???
Good eyes!

Would this matte box work with something like the Haida PRO II VND+CPL, which has a handle?
Probably not, depending on the size that is. But most handles are detachable
Does anyone know if there’s a way to add 15mm rod support to this? Even a hack like drilling holes into it to mount a rigging base?
Check out the regular matte box mini (not "lite") that one has a centerend mounting point up front that can be attached to rod clamps.
