Love the psychology behind some of these tips, especially the 30 degree rule and using drastically different angles to build more drama or suspense while a simple 30 deg. feels like a shift to the next thought while maintaining the same tone.
Also like how you made the two shots of you as the director and you as the student make us feel like the director is dominant and the student is a subordinate ;)
Brother… not only was this video informative. It was so clever on how you role played the info and displayed what you were gonna share by showing us how many yet not fully revealing it. Job well done my man!
I also use a ‘side-on’ to establish a conversation scene and as a variation perspective to break up the monotony of over-the-shoulder-shots. Do you think is a neutral way to use this perspective? Or is it too disengaged in your opinion?
This is my favorite part of filmmaking. I feel like sometimes i get stucked in the technicals such as cam specs and what not and forget about the art form
Amazing video Sam! Just subscribed! You taught everything we’ve been trying to learn in AV for 3 weeks in less than 10 minutes. I love the style of your videos they’re informational yet engaging

I'm a bit late but this was very educational - not usually one for the corny jovial instructional video but this was done with taste... (camera angles, got it) Thanks!
Im just now trying to figure out this videography thing and ive watched a few other videos on the subject that were just not catching my attention. You're hilarious man, im laughing and learning at the same time. So thank you for not making me yawn.
Just stumbled across your channel, nice to see a fellow brit teaching about cinematography (most of the others I've found are from the US) and great content by the way! Going to have a binge!
So glad you made this video. So many people are just buying cameras and claiming to be film-makers, without basic understanding of cinema techniques/film psychology. This leads to utter shite cluttering up our screens. Credit to anyone getting creative, but don't ignore the basics.
@@SamHolland if you're willing to and not too busy, I'd love it if you could watch what I had so far of my first documentary. I'm gonna start all over now that I realize I was doing so much of it wrong, but it'd be great if you and other documentary filmmakers could watch it and give me feedback. Awesome tips here! 🤩 I’m sucking up every little piece of information I can, as I’m trying to put together my first short film. This was golden, thanks! 🙏😃
Very interesting video. Very cool to know that I was already doing a lot of these tips you mentioned without even realizing it. I've been doing videography for only a month or 2 and knowing that I've been doing some of these without even realizing has me really excited to see how I progress a year from now! Thank you for the great informative video!
Great video! You explain everything so well in your tutorials. I have a question though, at 4:27, you say having the horizon in the middle of the frame is useful when hiding/showing certain details of the environment. How so?
Hi. Thank you. I’m pleased you’re enjoying the videos. Honestly, it’s not really a rule. It really all depends what’s in the frame. In this case, it just looked better because of the height and placement of the videos and subject etc. I wanted more clear space above. No rules. Do what YOU want to see 🤩👌🏻🎥
Coming from photography I do think about the angle. BUT it can be a tough decision at times and usually my thoughts are running a race when shooting lol. Great video! Keep it up
Hi. That’s exciting. FCPX for video editing and Adobe Lightroom for photo editing 👌🏻 great place to start. Good luck in your journey 🤩 stay tuned for plenty of film making tips
Nice video. As audience, I always found the 30 degree angle seemed a bit strange when used during interviews. Sometimes it sort of just stands out as a weird angle, especially when it’s a close up in those documentary style interviews. It’s like, where are they looking? And why?
