My favorite big man as a kid. I was a huge mark for Test and Jeff Hardy. Great look, great moveset, and it seems like a great guy from the way Maven tells it here. Test won't be forgotten!
I respect his ownership and transparency. Good or bad he tells it how it is and always in a tactful manner. Never seen him sugarcoat anything but he's not bitter either. He admits mistakes and seems to be at peace with everything. For me as a fan that's great to see. I hope he makes a fortune with this channel. Couldn't happen to a better guy
He has charisma for days and always has. The fact they never put a mic in his hand proper is a crime. On Tough Enough he was a natural in the promo class.
The thing I love the most about Maven is that with damn near every other former WWE wrestler who's been released, they always talk about their time there in a bitter way, trash the wwe, and it almost feels like they regret being there, unlike Maven, who's full of accountability, enthusiasm, and joy about the fact that he fulfilled his dream and became a professional wrestler despite everything he went through. You can see that in his demeanor and its why we all love him. Keep up the good work man, i grew up with the ruthless aggression era and it feels good seeing one of the wrestlers that was present during my childhood be so chill and good mentally. Edit: I know all those wrestlers have their reasons that explain their bitterness, I'm well aware and fully believe they're valid in whichever way they express themselves as long as they arent hurting anyone or themselves, I'm just saying its cool and refreshing seeing someone like Maven, who got released and was somewhat underutilized, come out of the other side feeling nothing but joy and pride in his time as a wrestler and speaking so positively and passionately about it. He turned what could have been a tragedy to a triumph and is inspiring an entire audience with his RUclips channel. That, to me, is more fulfilling than anything he could have done.

In hindsight, that was a bunch of BS how Test, Lance Storm (two Canadian guys) and Mr. Perfect were relegated to the pre-show for that years WrestleMania in Toronto. Goldust (who had just returned in January 2002 after leaving the WWF in '99) and Maven the rookie really didn't deserve that spot on the card. I still the enjoyed the Hardcore 24/7 shenanigans throughout the show though.

Something about casually hanging out with Test brought a smile to my face. RIP Your "Testicles" miss you man. The Billy Gunn story is really cool too. Being new at something, you don't always know if you're doing the right thing. But through months of training you make a snap decision, then to have a vet tell you "Good job" is one of those moments in life you savor.
It's great to know that in most cases, you ended bonding with people that disliked you and in the cases that it didn't happen, you still talk about them with respect and wishing them well. You have great character
I absolutely love how candid and honest Maven is in his videos. I honestly was never a big fan of Maven the wrestler, but I'm definitely becoming a fan of Maven the dude that used to wrestle lol
The sheer diplomacy and positive spin Maven can put on a bad relationship is so enviable. I don't know many youtubers who are have such authentic charisma and genuine likeability.
I feel one of the things that makes Maven's experiences so special and unique is the fact that he had to go the extra mile to earn other wrestlers respect due to their perception of his "easy way" in the business through Tough Enough. Just seeing how he carries himself, it's very clear how he won folks over.
To me, the fact a lot of guys he mentions here that didn't like him would go on to actually like or respect Maven, shows that Maven's work ethic showed them he was a good guy, knowing how much of a big break he was getting, and that he still was willing to learn to become a decent wrestler. It shows Maven is a really nice guy, and deserves credit for taking a situation that could make a lot of guys jealous of him, and getting them to like him.
It also shows how messed up it was that guys were getting heat for winning a WWE run contest, as if they just literally walked in off the street or something,If you don't like the contest blame the people who run it not the young contestants, so much bitterness
Its probably not they didnt like you. Its more they were jealous or couldnt deal with the fact that you broke in or paid your dues in a different way. Much respect to your content and being open.👍
I can only imagine how tough it mustve been to be in that locker room. Guys spent their whole lives trying to get to the WWE, so naturally they would feel a way about something being “given” that opportunity. Not Maven’s fault tho, hes a good dude
That's what I would've assumed was the issue with Malenko. That happens... like a lot of people really hated Miz because he came from reality TV, and it took him a long time to turn the court of public opinion around on that.
Half of those guys are just given the job through family or knowing the right people. Read the Rocks book. That guy was completely given his career. But in his defense he made the most of it. Most of them are testosterone filled egomaniacs that hate having the spotlight taken away. That’s where most of the hate comes from.
You can definitely tell he used to be a teacher just by the way he explains everything in such great detail. When he says something and then says, "Now, -" A lot of my teachers in school did the same thing. It's just interesting to me. Also, I love this channel!
It's vids like this that made me glad I rooted for you when you were on Tough Enough. You're a genuine dude, and I'm willing to bet you've been a blessing to your peers in one way or another. As for Perry Saturn, don't sweat it. A lot of us still remember how he did Mike Bell, so a dude like him is kind of expected to be a hard shell.

@@AJARyan-yn2uv That actually is a big part of it. Maven has a pretty unique perspective on pro wrestling. Was one of if not the first to come up through a new system AND done drop kicked Taker right out the rumble.
A lot of the other wrestling channels are reporting on rumours and hearsay with some factual. But it’s different when an actual wrestler genuinely goes into deep insight about the business and is honest and humble about it. One of the reasons this channel is amazing!
Great stuff, Maven! Most people don’t realize it, but for me tough enough introduced us to a whole genre of great music during that MTV era (TE had a soundtrack) that most of worked out to and still do to this day!! My playlist still looks like it’s from 1999-2002. Thanks, Maven!

I was really young and wwe wasnt that accessible yet in my country when Maven was active so I dont have much memories watching him in the ring. The yt shorts popped up suddenly and here I am binge watching his videos for few days now. He's really a great storyteller, a video with dvon would definitely be a golden content. it's also so nice to see that he still speaks of his time with wwe fondly.
The fact that you took the criticism leved against you, which isnt even abundant, and took it as a challenge to step outside your confort zone is immesnely telling on how good of a person you are Maven. I love the channel and always get excited when I see a new upload.
Perry Saturn was a good man with many issues .... glad to see the respect and understanding you have, i also was not a big fan of you when i was a kid but now that im older and you have this channel we actualy all see just how GREAT you were yourself specialy to todays standards lol and it's amazing to get to hear all this from your perspective, i think everyone has massive respect for you.
Maven you seem to have such a level head on your shoulders. It's the way I always try to live too, to try and always see the rational way to see things, and the lessons that can be gleaned from taking the time to evaluate things objectively. From the way you tell these stories about these guys who had "issues" with you at some point, it sounds like you ended up winning a lot of them over just because you were such a genuine guy and hard worker. Which even the hardest of guys have to respect.
That's such an awesome thing to see with your relationship with test! Even though two people might start out on the wrong foot they can still grow past it together and become friends!!

It's so cool that Maven realizes why these guys treated him badly at first, that most of the guys did teach him about the business, and that he was humble enough to turn things around. I'm always amazed by these videos, and it is a CRIME that he didn't get that much time on the Mic! I'm too squeamish to watch your injury video, but every other one has been A++++.👏
Maven gives some good advice to young people here. Humility and kindness can change difficult relationships into good ones, but he also shows you can't win everyone over. He still speaks charitably about guys he never got along with recognizing that they had circumstances that he may not be aware of. I never watched Tough Enough, but I can see why the viewers picked him to win it.
These stories are great. You do a great job balancing complete honesty with maturity. A lot of people should follow your example of acknowledging realities of things but staying collected and humble.
Get Dvon on a video! Would love seeing you two talk about wrestling. I could easily watch a podcast of you two talking matches, DVon's history, just anything wrestling related. I think you could have a very strong Chareer in podcasting. Special guests, talk history but also infuse current wrestling.
I went to every OVW show during that time. Hearing Rob Conway's name really brought back a lot of memories. That guy was always staying after to talk with fans. Always thought he'd make it big.
Ever get passed up for a promotion by somebody you believed you were better than? It's hard not to let that anger you. Every time you see them, it pisses you off. I imagine it's the same thing Test felt.

If it was achieved through devious politicking, sucking dick (literally or otherwise), pure nepotism, etc it's perfectly understandable to be pissed off. When it's through circumstances beyond that person's control, like a relative nobody wrestler like Maven (who had no pull in the company, was not a close friend of HHH or Shawn Michaels, was not a Vince McMahon pet project, etc) getting a wanted spot because of bookers and writers, it's irrational. I can understand Test being upset, but not at Maven. The thing is, in that business, the people who get ahead because of the former reasons are the ones most wrestlers can't/won't say shit to, but they will to guys like Maven.
If you can be nice about people who didn't like you, it suggests you have emotional intelligence. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I wish more people were like you.

I really liked Test back in the day and it is a shame he died so young, but him being upset about Maven "not paying his dues" would be pretty hypocritical. He was only training for about a year before he debuted in the WWF where he was featured prominently on TV throughout 1999.
@@tafua_a Understood, but Test was only a few months into his WWF tenure when he landed a spot on the WrestleMania XV card. It was a forgettable match although there were probably a few veterans who didn't make the show who felt the same way about him getting that payday.

11:40 when I had my first match (in front of a hometown crowd), Billy Gunn and Road Dogg were wrestling the main event. After the show we went for dinner at the sponsor's place (the Casino) and Billy sat with me, broke down the match and explained what went wrong, praised what went right and helped immensely. An absolute class act all the way and glad to see he's still working hard and in great shape physically!

I worked out why Maven is so popular. He basically has the same personality of that one teacher you had in school that was really good at explaining things and creates a relaxed classroom. His years as a teacher has given him that ability.
I can't lie, I've been an off and on wrestling fan my whole life so I don't even know how long Maven's WWE career lasted. I do remember scoffing at the idea of the "American Idol Federation" at the time, then much like many of the wrestlers he mentioned, finding him pretty entertaining in the ring to wondering where he went. I'm glad I stumbled on this video. Sir, this was possibly the classiest "shoot video" I've ever seen and my respect for you has grown exponentially. Truthful, entertaining and still respectful. Can't wait to dig into more videos!

I'm a Mechanic. When new guys come in out of school a lot of the journeymen hate on them for coming in regardless of how good they are. It's just typical crap for harder enviroments. Maven is a cool dude. Glad we have him doing this content.
Yeah, in my work, we haze the new guys. I was hazed for about the first 6 months I was at my first company, until they hired another rookie. We'll do things like pressure them to drink until they puke and stuff like that. Sounds like bullying to outsides, but it establishes connections. These are not just co-workers, they're your friends and family. So you tend to not want to the the team down.
Phew, as someone in the medical field you should see how nurses treat new people coming in fresh out of school. They are the most toxic people I've ever met... absolute bitches

The people who thrive in them aren't necessarily good at their job, just good at being assholes. It creates a culture of ass kissers and yes men because the guys that stand up for themselves and refuse to do stupid shit like drink until they black out/puke if they don't want to get shunned as pussies, even though it shows more balls to stand up to bullies. When they do that shit to the dudes, you can imagine how they treat any female co-workers. They never get accepted into the "brotherhood", but put up with endless sexual harassment and worse.
Never cared for the small athletic guys when I was a wrestling fan. Always liked the monsters like Powers of Pain, Road Warriors, Kane, etc. but this channel is extraordinary.
I think Test's case was in his career he unnecessarily got buried in angles probably due to politics. Him getting upset being replaced on the biggest card of the year was him trying to defend his spot in the company due to being walked on/being pushed out of angles that would of elevated him in the past i assume. His mic work was inconsistent but he had some really memorable promos. Besides that he had it all to be a star. Dude used to get mega pops. Towards the end of his career i think he became content with retiring from wrestling and getting in to real estate. Sadly demons and pills caught up with him. He came off to me as a genuinely cool dude. Glad you all patched things up and would like to hear more about him. You seem like a cool dude as well so i definitely believe you two were buds for real. Would love to hear more about Andrew because there is limited podcasts discussing him as a person and what he was like backstage. RIP Andrew and sorry you lost a friend. Love your content Maven!!

Maven, as someone who has experienced similar treatment in a promotion locker room, you handle this subject with class, no resentment, and no bitterness. Talent from promotions from the biggest to the smallest could learn a thing or two from your genuine character and humanity and how to build strength to endure some of the less sparkly parts of pro wrestling and just how much the way talent treats talent can have an effect on overall mental health, and being able to turn it into a positive.
It feels so good to earn the respect of a colleague you admire due to their own high standards on the job. I don't mind people like this because as long as it doesn't cross the line it helps me grow so much as a person. Now I find myself being the ball buster since I have the experience to back it up. I don't get offended because I encourage people to be passionate about their job and expect their best

The thing I love the most about Maven is that with damn near every other former WWE wrestler who's been released, they always talk about their time there in a bitter way, trash the wwe, and it almost feels like they regret being there, unlike Maven, who's full of accountability, enthusiasm, and joy about the fact that he fulfilled his dream and became a professional wrestler despite everything he went through. You can see that in his demeanor and its why we all love him. Keep up the good work man, i grew up with the ruthless aggression era and it feels good seeing one of the wrestlers that was present during my childhood be so chill and good mentally.
Edit: I know all those wrestlers have their reasons that explain their bitterness, I'm well aware and fully believe they're valid in whichever way they express themselves as long as they arent hurting anyone or themselves, I'm just saying its cool and refreshing seeing someone like Maven, who got released and was somewhat underutilized, come out of the other side feeling nothing but joy and pride in his time as a wrestler and speaking so positively and passionately about it. He turned what could have been a tragedy to a triumph and is inspiring an entire audience with his RUclips channel. That, to me, is more fulfilling than anything he could have done.

Goldust (who had just returned in January 2002 after leaving the WWF in '99) and Maven the rookie really didn't deserve that spot on the card. I still the enjoyed the Hardcore 24/7 shenanigans throughout the show though.

The sheer diplomacy and positive spin Maven can put on a bad relationship is so enviable. I don't know many youtubers who are have such authentic charisma and genuine likeability.
I feel one of the things that makes Maven's experiences so special and unique is the fact that he had to go the extra mile to earn other wrestlers respect due to their perception of his "easy way" in the business through Tough Enough. Just seeing how he carries himself, it's very clear how he won folks over.
To me, the fact a lot of guys he mentions here that didn't like him would go on to actually like or respect Maven, shows that Maven's work ethic showed them he was a good guy, knowing how much of a big break he was getting, and that he still was willing to learn to become a decent wrestler.
It shows Maven is a really nice guy, and deserves credit for taking a situation that could make a lot of guys jealous of him, and getting them to like him.
It also shows how messed up it was that guys were getting heat for winning a WWE run contest, as if they just literally walked in off the street or something,If you don't like the contest blame the people who run it not the young contestants, so much bitterness

@@AJARyan-yn2uv That actually is a big part of it. Maven has a pretty unique perspective on pro wrestling. Was one of if not the first to come up through a new system AND done drop kicked Taker right out the rumble.
It's a breath of fresh air to hear someone reminisce fondly and humbly.
It's been great seeing Maven and Stevie Richard's channels grow so quickly, both great watches.
A lot of the other wrestling channels are reporting on rumours and hearsay with some factual. But it’s different when an actual wrestler genuinely goes into deep insight about the business and is honest and humble about it. One of the reasons this channel is amazing!

Great stuff, Maven! Most people don’t realize it, but for me tough enough introduced us to a whole genre of great music during that MTV era (TE had a soundtrack) that most of worked out to and still do to this day!! My playlist still looks like it’s from 1999-2002. Thanks, Maven!

I was really young and wwe wasnt that accessible yet in my country when Maven was active so I dont have much memories watching him in the ring. The yt shorts popped up suddenly and here I am binge watching his videos for few days now. He's really a great storyteller, a video with dvon would definitely be a golden content.

Maven you seem to have such a level head on your shoulders. It's the way I always try to live too, to try and always see the rational way to see things, and the lessons that can be gleaned from taking the time to evaluate things objectively. From the way you tell these stories about these guys who had "issues" with you at some point, it sounds like you ended up winning a lot of them over just because you were such a genuine guy and hard worker. Which even the hardest of guys have to respect.
That's such an awesome thing to see with your relationship with test! Even though two people might start out on the wrong foot they can still grow past it together and become friends!!

Maven gives some good advice to young people here. Humility and kindness can change difficult relationships into good ones, but he also shows you can't win everyone over. He still speaks charitably about guys he never got along with recognizing that they had circumstances that he may not be aware of. I never watched Tough Enough, but I can see why the viewers picked him to win it.

I went to every OVW show during that time. Hearing Rob Conway's name really brought back a lot of memories. That guy was always staying after to talk with fans. Always thought he'd make it big.

Ever get passed up for a promotion by somebody you believed you were better than? It's hard not to let that anger you. Every time you see them, it pisses you off. I imagine it's the same thing Test felt.
@@jd9119 It depends how the promotion was achieved. If it was achieved through devious politicking, sucking dick (literally or otherwise), pure nepotism, etc it's perfectly understandable to be pissed off.
When it's through circumstances beyond that person's control, like a relative nobody wrestler like Maven (who had no pull in the company, was not a close friend of HHH or Shawn Michaels, was not a Vince McMahon pet project, etc) getting a wanted spot because of bookers and writers, it's irrational. I can understand Test being upset, but not at Maven.
The thing is, in that business, the people who get ahead because of the former reasons are the ones most wrestlers can't/won't say shit to, but they will to guys like Maven.
If you can be nice about people who didn't like you, it suggests you have emotional intelligence. There is nothing to be ashamed of. I wish more people were like you.

I really liked Test back in the day and it is a shame he died so young, but him being upset about Maven "not paying his dues" would be pretty hypocritical. He was only training for about a year before he debuted in the WWF where he was featured prominently on TV throughout 1999.
I think it's less about Maven "not paying his dues" and more about Test not getting a WrestleMania paycheck because of Maven

11:40 when I had my first match (in front of a hometown crowd), Billy Gunn and Road Dogg were wrestling the main event. After the show we went for dinner at the sponsor's place (the Casino) and Billy sat with me, broke down the match and explained what went wrong, praised what went right and helped immensely. An absolute class act all the way and glad to see he's still working hard and in great shape physically!

I worked out why Maven is so popular. He basically has the same personality of that one teacher you had in school that was really good at explaining things and creates a relaxed classroom. His years as a teacher has given him that ability.
I can't lie, I've been an off and on wrestling fan my whole life so I don't even know how long Maven's WWE career lasted. I do remember scoffing at the idea of the "American Idol Federation" at the time, then much like many of the wrestlers he mentioned, finding him pretty entertaining in the ring to wondering where he went.
I'm glad I stumbled on this video. Sir, this was possibly the classiest "shoot video" I've ever seen and my respect for you has grown exponentially. Truthful, entertaining and still respectful. Can't wait to dig into more videos!

I'm a Mechanic. When new guys come in out of school a lot of the journeymen hate on them for coming in regardless of how good they are. It's just typical crap for harder enviroments. Maven is a cool dude. Glad we have him doing this content.
Yeah, in my work, we haze the new guys. I was hazed for about the first 6 months I was at my first company, until they hired another rookie. We'll do things like pressure them to drink until they puke and stuff like that. Sounds like bullying to outsides, but it establishes connections. These are not just co-workers, they're your friends and family. So you tend to not want to the the team down.
Phew, as someone in the medical field you should see how nurses treat new people coming in fresh out of school. They are the most toxic people I've ever met... absolute bitches

Real men don't need to try to force people to do painful things to "earn respect." It's all nonsense. I've heard work environments described as friends and family so many times....only to see them step on each other's heads to go higher. I guarantee your situation is no different. If you had a crisis situation, how many would just fend for themselves and how many would stop to help you? You might be surprised by the answer from all your brothers at work.
@@georgen5882 You're absolutely correct. Those kinds of work environments are utterly toxic and drive good people away. The people who thrive in them aren't necessarily good at their job, just good at being assholes.
It creates a culture of ass kissers and yes men because the guys that stand up for themselves and refuse to do stupid shit like drink until they black out/puke if they don't want to get shunned as pussies, even though it shows more balls to stand up to bullies.
When they do that shit to the dudes, you can imagine how they treat any female co-workers. They never get accepted into the "brotherhood", but put up with endless sexual harassment and worse.

Never cared for the small athletic guys when I was a wrestling fan. Always liked the monsters like Powers of Pain, Road Warriors, Kane, etc. but this channel is extraordinary.

I think Test's case was in his career he unnecessarily got buried in angles probably due to politics. Him getting upset being replaced on the biggest card of the year was him trying to defend his spot in the company due to being walked on/being pushed out of angles that would of elevated him in the past i assume. His mic work was inconsistent but he had some really memorable promos. Besides that he had it all to be a star. Dude used to get mega pops. Towards the end of his career i think he became content with retiring from wrestling and getting in to real estate. Sadly demons and pills caught up with him. He came off to me as a genuinely cool dude. Glad you all patched things up and would like to hear more about him. You seem like a cool dude as well so i definitely believe you two were buds for real. Would love to hear more about Andrew because there is limited podcasts discussing him as a person and what he was like backstage. RIP Andrew and sorry you lost a friend. Love your content Maven!!

Maven, as someone who has experienced similar treatment in a promotion locker room, you handle this subject with class, no resentment, and no bitterness. Talent from promotions from the biggest to the smallest could learn a thing or two from your genuine character and humanity and how to build strength to endure some of the less sparkly parts of pro wrestling and just how much the way talent treats talent can have an effect on overall mental health, and being able to turn it into a positive.
It feels so good to earn the respect of a colleague you admire due to their own high standards on the job. I don't mind people like this because as long as it doesn't cross the line it helps me grow so much as a person. Now I find myself being the ball buster since I have the experience to back it up. I don't get offended because I encourage people to be passionate about their job and expect their best

Maven is so much incredibly charismatic and so easy to listen to. One of the most well spoke people I’ve ever heard. I haven’t watched wrestling since like 2006 but I love these videos.
