- Engraving cutting boards can be just as easy as they can be tricky. In this video I talk about how I engrave cutting boards that are larger than my "work area". Now, this doesn't work on every machine, but it can give you an idea of things you can try on your own machine.

What would you like to see in future videos?
Could you do a video on a graduated type object that has a slope, like a pint glass? Or a video with a beer mug that has a handle and how to combat that along with the measuring the artwork to be sure it falls on the appropriate side
@@austinstroot9910 I’ll see what I can do.
@BAWOVINARollingPin thank you!
Great video bud - never knew about the grain direction potential issue, but makes total sense now that you said it!
I need to make a dedicated video about that.
Video request. Can you do one on Epilog bearing grease lubricant? Our shipped with a syringe that says apply every 3 months…we haven’t.
I thought they had one. I’ll look into that as a future video.
Thanks for the insight. Wish I had customers like this. Most send low or medium resolution artwork that we end up editing or doing an up rez.
I’ve been pretty fortunate with most of mine.
Thanks so much! Heading to studio to give it a try. One question - I generally remove the top protective sheet … is it mandatory to keep paper on acrylic?? I’m going to test. Thanks Again.
It’s not mandatory but if you’re cutting it, it can help make the surface cleaner in the end.
Trevor, Some time ago I saw you use a 12" wide massively long roll of masking tape. I could have sworn it was from 3M. I've scoured 3Ms site but can not find it. I did manage to find masking tape from a plastics supplier. However it is NOT stickey enough. What is that 12" masking tape you use? I'm trying to get nice dark engravings on wood without sanding after. Thanks in advance. - George
I get most of my masking tape from Tape Depot. I get my adhesive sign tape from 3M.
Hi Trevor thanks for the video. I am impressed that you were able to get such a good surface finish. Did you turn off air assist to avoid having the smoke burn The outer edges of the engraving?
No, I left the air assist on the whole time.
Use “milky” transfer tape on the wood before you engrave it. Then after you engrave it peal
It off and no smoke burn 🤘🏼
@@6ix6ix_Serpents yep I always tape the wood before engraving for that purpose. I was interested in Trevor’s approach since you don’t need to spend time to put tape on and peel off. Probably the secret is in making several low power passes instead of a slow one pass
@@6ix6ix_Serpents yes, that will also work if you have that issue.
Hi,
Can a Gweike 50w iCloud pro 11 laser cut a juice groove in a cutting board ?
While it probably could do something, I wouldn’t recommend that method. A palm router or CNC is best for that kind of thing.
@@MakerExperiment thank you
@@PaulMarlmountWoodcrafts you’re welcome.
Interesting problem solving. Something that deep seems better suited for CNC router. I struggled with deciding which to buy first a Laser or Router and ultimately landed on router for the work that I do mostly because of size. I ended up with a Onefinity Journeyman with a 36x48" work area. A laser with that workspace is not easy to find nor is it comparable for the price. From a shop/service perspective have you considered having both?
I’ve considered having both. I was in the same predicament when I bought my laser. It is certainly better suited for a CNC if you are filling with Epoxy but it can still work well on laser if done right. Maybe one day I’ll get a CNC.
@@MakerExperiment the Onefinity was only 4k probably closer to 5.5k once your all in. I imagine that's good value for time when you can afford it and it opens up new options for other combined work. My hope is the CNC pays for itself and then the laser I want shortly down the road.
@@VacFink my next look is at a UV printer and CNC after that. I’ll keep that one in mind.
@@MakerExperiment well if you get the UV I'd sure watch the content. That's a pretty nice machine. I'm prototyping so hard to justify but love the tech
@@VacFink oh yeah, I totally get that.
Nice work :)
However wouldn't it be easier to rotate the board 180", so you would get the tape in the upper left area and then mirror the logo? :) Wouldn't that give you room for Y axis engraving on that particular board? :)
If you wanted the cross grain engraving? :)
This board still worked for me. You can do that method if you wanted to.
Why not use a masking tape? And leave it on for the epoxy
You could if you wanted to.
