  • Got material you want to laser engrave bigger than your laser bed size? No problem, because in this video I show how to laser engrave wood using the pass-through method and an alternative alignment workaround.
    Having a large work area to begin with is going to help and I'm using the NEJE 3 Max system with an engravable area of 810mm x 460mm, but in this video I print a world map on to plywood measuring 1220mm x 840mm without any modifications to the laser system. Lightburn is an excellent software to help with the laser engraving of oversized materials.
    There has been previous work in this area worth your attention:

    NEJE do have an extension kit which expands the physical size to 1030 x 810mm, but the pass through method can expand them further.

    Great way to extend the work window of that machine. A number years ago I did that when I engraved some very large signs on my milling machine for our church. A nice straight edge and close measuring setting up the new X axis and it worked like a charm.
    Great way to do it on these small lasers for sure.

      Thanks Gary. The guides were definitely a great help for easy alignment although the disparate nature of the text was a bit of a cheat. Having a continuous image would be a challenge and something I hope to try. Ortur have sent me their rotary device so I've got a couple of challenges in mind for that. Just hope NEJE can send me their next generation laser module, more power, deeper wood cutting. All the best. Ray

    Hi Ray, I bought a small 10 watt optical power diode laser engraver. No plans to do anything at that scale, but that's pretty awesome! I've made a few large wood globes years ago, and while I had one at an art show I had a few WWII Veterans mention the lack of a few tiny islands in the Pacific that were too small to even show up at that scale. They would've been comparable to the point of a needle in physical size, but I will make it a point to show them when I make another one in the future. If you ever make a world map showing land masses you'll be cussing at how many islands there are lol. Cheers!

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  Год назад +2

      Hey Steve, The decision to not include some of the smaller islands was hard, but as you say they would be unreadable. I guess with a long enough board one could have a magnified area for a cluster, but the whole thing would be cumbersome. Definitely need a more powerful and reliably quicker laser for this work!

    Very clever jig! Nice work- I think it turned out great! I'm working with a 900x900mm bed but I don't have space to feed through since it has to sit in a corner- so it's kind of a trade off. Either way, it's just a 10 watt laser so until I'm up to a 20+ or a CO2 I probably won't utilize the whole area- still nice though.
    Prettiest place on Earth that I've seen in Person has to be the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The view from Pike's Peak was just plain epic in all directions- I felt like I was drunk after driving up to the top, I think I was focusing on the road, then once I got out I can see for Hundreds of Miles in all directions- kinda messed with my head a bit!

      Thanks Ray. If I could find the time I would love to go along to a woodturning exhibition. I did have an experienced woodturner come into the charity one day. 40 years of turning and selling them. He said my work was nice and he should be able to get £10 maybe £15 for some of my best pieces. I told him that I had just sold 1 piece for £150 for the charity. It went to someone in Germany. I guess what would really concern me is that an experienced woodturner has a critical eye for things I may not be seeing.

    I did enjoy the tiling demonstration. What air pump do you use for your air assist? Also would a shower exhaust fan be too strong for the venting system? I have the NEJE 3 Max with the 40640 head unit just have not set it up yet.

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  Год назад

      For the air assist I had a 40l compressor, but I do resin casting so having something versatile was useful. I use a dedicated extractor fan slightly more powerful than a shower exhaust fan, but could do with something a little more powerful than that. But it gets really noisy too. Happy lasering!

  • @richards7909
    @richards7909 Год назад +2

    Could you mount the laser base and the board to a pivot on some casters like mobile whiteboards so when you’ve finished, it can be rotated? When in use, maybe rest on other surfaces or some foldable legs?
    Might even be able to mount an air filter and storage for the cover on it? :)

    • @RayWhitbyCreations
      @RayWhitbyCreations  Год назад +2

      Hi Richard. I was wondering about mounting the frame of the laser on a mobile device (casters?!) so that one could engrave a full sheet of ply by moving the entire frame in sections and use targets in the margin for alignment. But I need a faster laser for that project. Thankfully the laser system is lightweight and I probably wont be doing too many large sized projects. I think storing it vertically may be the way to go. Thanks for the suggestions!

      Even better, Ortur have sent me something to try which will be great for woodturning. 2 problems though. First, there's too many other projects I need to get finished before I can play. Second, it'll only do up to 110mm diameter cylinders. So looks like I may have to come up a jig or 2!
