  • Most CNC lasers have a limited burn area. What do you do when you need to burn something larger than your burn area? Using LightBurn, you can cut your project into smaller, doable chunks. It is easy to do if you know about one simple option called Cut Shapes. Keep in mind that this only works with vector graphics and not just an image. There is a way to do something similar if you have a graphic that needs similar attention. That is not covered in this video.
    LightBurn:
If you are interested in the LightBurn software, you can try it out FREE for 30 days. Just go to their website and download the full version and it will work for 30 days. LightBurnsoftware.com/pages/t.... LightBurn is not a sponsor in any way with CNC @ Home. I provide this information to help you if you are interested in the software. This is what I use to drive my laser and I know other makes who use it for their laser.

    Discount code: CNC15
If you are interested in getting some really nice mittens or gloves, check out what they have at give'r: www.give-r.com/. The best part is that they provided a discount code that you can use: CNC15. Use this code at checkout in the "Gift card or discount code" input box to receive a 15% discount from give'r. I paid full price for my mittens but you don't have to. Use the CNC15 discount code at check-out and save 15%.
Give'r is not a sponsor of CNC @ Home. CNC @ Home does not make anything if you purchase something from the give'r site. I like my mittens and worked out this deal so you can save on your own pair of mittens, gloves, or hates, clothing, and accessories.

Excellent tutorial - I am cutting a very large stencil on my 17" laser - will be tiled 3x3 when finished, for labeling large tanks. This was exactly what I needed, thanks!

    Wow!!! Just...WOW!!!
Obviously, this goes into my "saved" videos. Cogent and coherent steps to creating something wonderful.
I appreciate that you break the process into easy to follow steps, without making the viewer feel that you are being condescending. THANK-YOU!!!

I hope you find this helpful in your project. I will do another video similar to this where I work with an image that I do not convert to vectors. An example would be burning a picture of a person and needed it to be larger than your working area. There is a different technique that is needed for that. Similar kind of work but.... ;-)

@@CNCATHome "Helpful"?!? Are you serious?!? I think that you should send this video to Lightburn, to Thingiverse and any forum that deals with lasers. I did training for a Fortune 500 company and I am being drop-dead serious...this is perfection.

@@HugoHugunin - I have not worked with K40 Whisperer. I must have looked into it at some point as my browser says I have already been to their site. If LightBurn isn't working with your CO2 laser, contact their support. I have found them to be good to work with. Not always the fastest but I do get good information from them.

Just started designing/building my own diode based laser cutter/engraver ... I'm old, so remember cutting images up manually to print them out and was wondering if this sort of functionality was available for lasers ........... not only is it available, but a very nice gentleman has provided a fantastic video outlining how to perform it ... thanks you so much for sharing and I'm now your latest follower👍

Sounds like a fun project, building your laser cutter/engraver. Enjoy that process and have fun with it. I am glad you were able to get something out of this video. LightBurn also has some functionality for cutting a larger image on a single piece of material where the laser or the material gets moved between jobs. I have not used that, yet. ;-)

@@CNCATHome Thank you for taking the time to reply, greatly appreciated .... oh that'll be absolutely perfect for the way I'm building my machine!!! I'm going for around the 1220mm by 610mm (4ft by 2ft) size, but I'll be able to push material in from the from and out of the rear of the machine, meaning I can engrave/cut a full 8ft by 4ft sheet, the functionality you mention is exactly what I'm looking for!
Should be simple enough to line up the board a few times, especially if I laser a mark at the next point on the board and then line that up with a reference mark on the bed ..... woooohooooo 👍

@@barry.w.christie - Sweet! I would suggest making it a little wider if you can, to make it easier to pass a 4ft wide sheet through. 1220mm doesn't give you much wiggle room. ;-) There is a nice video out on the LightBurn channel that talks you through how to do a partial cut and move the material. Let me see if I can find a link to that... Found it!: ruclips.net/video/n__saOKVupA/видео.html

@@CNCATHome Thank you soooooo much, will watch after I've finished turning my goblet (starting to get into woodturning) 😁
With regards width, I should've been a little more exact in what I said ... I want to be able to fit at least 4ft in side to side, but it'll be a bit wider as the C-beams (for rigidity) I've bought are 1500mm 👍
My first thought was to move the laser about over the sheet, then I heard something about pass through on a video, so obvious to move the sheet through the laser ... it just went from a nice big cutting area to the perfect cutting area 👌
I'll send you a link to the build video once done if you're interested.

@@barry.w.christie - Got ya! As long as your cutting area is at least 1220mm. 🙂 I would love to see your build video when you have that done. I look forward to seeing what you have done. You can still move your machine over the material if you want. It won't know the difference between the material being moved and it being moved. Unless you build in some extra sensors. ;-)

    Helpful!
What is the best way to line up the next burn to ensure edges are linear when splitting up an image to be burned on a larger surface?

    • @CNCATHome
      @CNCATHome  Месяц назад

The best way to be consistent is to have some sort of zeroing template. You need a way to insure your tiles are always where you need them to be. I have a couple videos on making templates.

@@sadlerro - I got ya! That is what you were saying but because it was on this video about breaking up an image for tiles, I assumed... ;-) If you are using LightBurn, you can use their Print and Cut feature to burn an area, move your material, and continue burning. You will have to break up your burn into the areas you can do at one time. I have a couple videos on the Print and Cut feature. You can also check out the LightBurn RUclips channel for some videos on that feature.
