You never showed how to put it in neutral position. Count the total shaft rotation and turn the shaft half of that number. The worm shaft is now in neutral position.
Jason Cowin I rebuild mines but after I installed it. It feel wobbly like driving a boat. Did you have that issue? I did everything that service manual said to do.
@@sleeks9939 I did not have that issue. Have you tried adjusting the "adjustment screw" that is on top of the steering gear housing? Per the manual the steering wheel should have a maximum of 1.18" of free play. Also make sure that you don't over tighten which can cause the steering to bind. Test that it doesn't bind then lock the adjustment screw back in place. The manual says for the problem "Excessive play" - Steering linkage worn - Steering gear loose - Steering shaft coupling worn - Ball joints worn - Steering gear out of adjustment or broken
Jason Cowin I did. The adjustment screw wouldn’t let me turn right or left. After less then 2 blocks of driving. The steering gear box gave out so I replaced it with a rebuilt one. I took it completely apart. Mission failed but I’ve learned a lot from it. Even after centering it. I was able to find the neutral position. I place 2 match mark and found the center and it was place in the neutral position. When I didn’t do that I wasn’t able to make a full U-turn. So I took it out again count the steering wheel turns and the gear box it then matched perfectly left turns / right turns with the same amount of steering counts. 4.25 Left and 4.25 right on each turns.
Jason Cowin I replace every single bushing. Upper lowers. Steering damper. Tie rods inner and outer. Steering stabilizer. Did a full rebuild replacement of every components. Plus the steering gear box. Just did the alignment and the steering has less then 1/2 inches of play.
Nice vid I’m doing the same work on my 87, I keep getting seals that are 1.75 inches in diameter Mine for some reason is only 1.5” or so. Do you remember what the diameter of that seal was?

Great point if you want your steering wheel to be straight to drive straight.

What book are you using? Thanks
Retro Panic “Toyota Truck & 4Runner Gasoline
1987 Repair Manual”
Pub. No. RM046U
It has an orange cover and it from Toyota.
It costs around $100 but I find it well worth the cost. I have to actually book version.
