I didn't do any true validation. I know for a fact VLC was picking up other movement than just the bees. What I found interesting / useful is the trend matched what I experienced while I was recording this video. There were lots of bees and then it tapered off. In the end VLC was just a rough tool that got me close enough.

I am planning to work on similar project. My original plan is using PoE camera with zoom closer to the entrance. I then feed the information into a RaspberryPi or just a local computer for processing with compute vision.

Sends alert via WiFi and has an internal backup battery that can last for hours. Could be configured to alert if WiFi was down for more than X amount of time.

Jason Cowin I rebuild mines but after I installed it. It feel wobbly like driving a boat. Did you have that issue? I did everything that service manual said to do.

​@@sleeks9939 I did not have that issue. Have you tried adjusting the "adjustment screw" that is on top of the steering gear housing? Per the manual the steering wheel should have a maximum of 1.18" of free play. Also make sure that you don't over tighten which can cause the steering to bind. Test that it doesn't bind then lock the adjustment screw back in place. The manual says for the problem "Excessive play" - Steering linkage worn - Steering gear loose - Steering shaft coupling worn - Ball joints worn - Steering gear out of adjustment or broken

Jason Cowin I did. The adjustment screw wouldn’t let me turn right or left. After less then 2 blocks of driving. The steering gear box gave out so I replaced it with a rebuilt one. I took it completely apart. Mission failed but I’ve learned a lot from it. Even after centering it. I was able to find the neutral position. I place 2 match mark and found the center and it was place in the neutral position. When I didn’t do that I wasn’t able to make a full U-turn. So I took it out again count the steering wheel turns and the gear box it then matched perfectly left turns / right turns with the same amount of steering counts. 4.25 Left and 4.25 right on each turns.

Jason Cowin I replace every single bushing. Upper lowers. Steering damper. Tie rods inner and outer. Steering stabilizer. Did a full rebuild replacement of every components. Plus the steering gear box. Just did the alignment and the steering has less then 1/2 inches of play.

I created that graph using excel, and then added an animation of the red bar and the counter using video editing software. The data is a little harder to find and I don’t have time to explain that right now. I should have time tomorrow or this weekend.

Assuming using windows: 1) Open "Command Promt" in administrator mode (right click on the option to get the administrator option. 2) In command prompt navigate to the folder where vlc.exe is located. (example cd C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLan\VLC) cd stands for change directory and the C:\.. is just the file path where vlc is on my PC. 3) With all instances of VLC closed on the computer in the command line enter the following command: vlc.exe [Insert File Path Here] --video-filter=motiondetect -vvv >test 2>&1 (for example: vlc.exe C:\Users\jason\Documents\Projects\BeeCounting\beecounting.mp4 --video-filter=motiondetect -vvv >test 2>&1) 3b) This should launch VLC and begin playing your video. 4) In the vlc toolbar select "tool->messages" and make sure the Verbosity option in the messages box that pops up is set to 2 (debug). There should be messages popping up with how many moving objects are counted. I hope that is helpful.

I had to adjust the file path a little but it worked, thanks! I'm actually using this trick to count bees too lol
