Corvair owner with huge 80 degrees of steering wheel play - column though does wobble! Already this has been helpful (lost half a turn when I loosened the jam nut - so, great catch by you in that prior video!)
G'day from Oz Matty.. Awesome video mate.. I read some of the comments. i'm not sure if anyone has pass this info on. Just wanted to share a little trick with the Ball bearings in the Piston housing. If you remove your Rotary valve (by turning Anti-clockwise) from the Unit keeping the steering box Horizontal you can slide the Piston out with the balls inside. When you pull the piston out have a container underneath to catch any stray ones (They usually stay inside the piston). And when reinstalling use a little grease to hold the balls in place in the guide tube and then pack the piston from one hole only starting with the next color inline to match the way you packed the tube (again with a little grease to help hold them in place). When reinstalling the Piston into the housing have the end plug removed so you can see the magic take place.. Allow the worm gear to pull the piston in and hey presto.. It's a bit easier and allows you more room to play around. Hope that help others when doing the install.. All the best for New Year everyone.. =)
I am familiar with rebuilding various types of steering boxes and have done so in the past. I have also seen various videos and tutorials on Sag box rebuilds, but I must say that this one is really clear and informative for the average person. The explanations are clear and the video itself is as well. I am sure that it will convince many people that they can undertake this project with basic hand tools, confidence and patience. Great job : < )
I'll give it to ya. You never have a boring video. Always something to keep a person entertained and maybe a laugh or two Kep up the great how to videos. I've learned a lot.
Very clear tear down, seal replacement. I wish that you would have touched on steering wheel play, and shaft play.(the bearing you did not take out) I was hoping you where going to talk through it.But you passed on. Which these are my box symptoms. I have very few that leaked. But all have had some degree of play at the steering wheel. And a '72 corvette that had extreme shaft play. You make great videos.
Searches "rebuild steering box". Clicks very first link in the results. Doesn't bother looking for any others, because what could possibly be a better tutorial than this one?? Fantastic walk thru, thanks for uploading!! 👌👌
This is a great video but I need to know if i can just replace jam nut on the adjustment for play and where can I get one? My play adjustment is rusted on i cant adjust play at all.
Just finished the steering box (Delphi) rebuild on my 2004 Silverado 2500 HD 4x4, and I couldn't have done it without Matt's help (and your channel, too)!! The ball bearings were the toughest part, and I watched, then paused, then watched, and paused the video 20 times, to get it right! Thank you both for posting this video!! I subscribed just because of that info! Stay safe, stay well, and wear a mask!! We'll get through this virus, eventually..., God willing, and the creek don't rise!
I would pay the 2 of you to fix my truck in a heartbeat. After watching this video I’m 100% sure I don’t want to deal with my steering box... 😆😆😆😆 Awesome vid man ✊🏾😎
Doing this rebuild....the guts of a jeep box into my 68 chevelle box that way I achieve faster ratio steering into my chevelle box while retaining my standard line hookups.....jeep box is metric lines Thanks to this video, thumbs up
Hi there, I have movement between the output shaft and the housing. So the needle bearing and shaft are worn? Adjustment on top of box won’t help, right? Thanks
Excellent video to show all the details of a rebuild. I've got leaky seals but I'll probaly just do the box replacement. Still a very interesting video.
I'm not sure I can give you a part number at this point. I got the kit from orielleys and just asked for a complete rebuild seal kit for a 88 jeep cherokee steering box.
On 16:04 at the worm gear there is O Ring that you're showing us, is that the new O Ring or old O Ring ? That mean you didn't replace it to the new one...
Hi Matt, I have a 1990 Chero. Just wondering if you will be making a vid. on the Renix system and go through the various tests and check points? Thanks.
The Matt Narrating the video & rebuilding the steering box sounds like Travis Haley from Haley Strategic to me...Anyone else think so? lol Also thank you for the video I am currently rebuilding a steering box for my Dodge Ram 2500 & this video proved to be very helpful.
Thank You This Helped Alot I Have A 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Sport And I Was Struggling With The Ball Bearing For The Worm And Putting Them Into The Piston
Thanks! Nice video! But... in the video you did replace just 1 oil seal in the pitman shaft, Correct? Can you confirm that there are in fact 2 oil seals? upper superior oil seal (followed by a washer) and a lower inferior oil seal (again followed by a washer)?Thx
Great video. Do you know why my steering would be harder to turn to the left than the right. All of my other steering components are in good shape. I have an input leak on the input shaft seal so i have to take it apart anyway. Just wondering which internal part would go bad and make it harder to turn one way than the other. The pump makes noise going left also. any help would be much appreciated. Thanks
Excellent video. BleepinJeep, I am a new jeeper and I recently bought my first Wrangler TJ. I have been to trails two times so far. Can you please do a video which covers the maintenance we should after a trail run ? Just to make sure everything is good? -Thanks so much.
the only thing we didnt take apart was the top cap assembly which you can see at 2:30. As mentioned if you take that apart it will be hell getting it adjusted right again. Other than that we didnt skip anything.
Thanks for your help I've got a 1993 jeep Grand Cherokee that I've been working oni have to rebuild my gear box so wish me luck and how can you tell the difference on a rear axle of it's a Dana 30 or something else
Hi Matt, Damn I screwed up. Put the collar on the casing of pit shaft for the box brace. also did the jcr strengthening plate. Got it all back together and pulled out of my garage and boom...Leaking now! ....Pretty sure I tightened the collar too tight and blew the seal.
Thinking about doing this myself...has the seal kit held up no leaks?...just curious...hate to do the remaned option cause i like how she drives now...never know what ya get with one of those.
Great video. Can you recommend a reputable brand of kit for rebuilding a 1974 Chevy G 10 Van power steering gear box? I'm looking at Rock Auto offerings. Gates, Edelman and ACDelco
Thanks! That's everything I needed to know. With the Year, Make and Model, I was able to look it up on Omega's site, and then when I finally found a picture of it, it matches what I'm looking for. For future reference, it was (most likely) kit # 2780.
I have steering play and when you turn the shaft that comes from the wheel and goes into the box it turns partially with ease. Does this rebuild get rid of ALL play in the steering?
I have an 88 S10 Blazer . My steering box is leaking from the input shaft . Is it possible to just change the seal and fix it without breaking it down ? And will this stop the leak or is it that the o rings need to be replaced on the piston input ?
I'm rebuilding a gear box that looks just like that one out of a '95 Chevrolet Caprice Police Package 9C1. The rebuild kit I got from Omega didn't have the right seals (particularly the Pitman shaft seal) so I couldn't use it. What rebuild kit did you use for your gearbox? It looks so similar I'm willing to bet it'll use the same exact kit. Casting number on my box is 26000525. 2.5:1 Steering ratio.
Hey Matt, what was the ball bearing count? Off my 1977 CJ5, my steering box has 22 ball bearings. 11 shiny and 11 dull gray. I think it's also the 12.7:1 quick ratio.
i have a good bit of play in my steering and a significant leak at the output shaft. my 93 xj has 250k miles. at this point will the worm gear be too worn out for a rebuild. would I be better off getting a reman box from the parts store
hey im rebuilding one on my 87 dodge ram and while i was taking it apart i noticed something like a broken spring in it, i looked at the box again and seen that where one of the fitting goes there look like a check valve if you go to 6:43 im taking about the top fitting, would it matter if that valve doesnt work?
I got a 99 Durango Gearbox in my TJ. It works but is leaking up top where the steering column meets it. Could I just do the outer seal and be on my merry way?
Hey, great video! Very thorough, and I like the way you explain things in more detail...thanks! Quick question: What is the model number for that steering box unit? What did it come out of? I've got a leaky steering box in my 05 Duramax, and it looks a lot like that...
hey i chaneged the seals from where the steering column connects to the gear box n it still leaks any advice👍🏻? it went in straight i used a socket to push it in even
I put new seals in my steering gear per the video, bled all the air out and now my steering wheel spins to the right when I start the engine. I can turn it back but spins back right when I let go of the wheel. Besides a new steering gear, do you have any suggestions?
I dont see anything about re installing. Is it difficult? Does the worm gear need to be set at a certain position eith the steering wheel. I feel there is a big key piece missing there.
Nice Video. My power steering conversion doesn't return to center on its own and feels like it has some drag in it. The alignment shows good caster (3 degrees). There's no play in the saginaw box. I've adjusted the box both directions with no improvement. Does this sound like a bad steering box, or could it be the pump having issues? I bought a rebuilt box, and I'm thinking it may be no good. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hey Matt great video! I've rebuild my steering box but now works only at cold engine! When hot it's very hard to move! May be ATF oil or something other? Thanks! :)
with my truck running it seen like i dont have no tention in the wheels seems like its nothing hook up it feels that loose...its a 90 fullsize k5 blazer 35x12 tires on it..if that will help u out any
Great video and information. Question - I want to have decently fast lock-to-lock steering with my ram-assist, and to do that I'd like to increase the 'flow' (GPM) throughput on my gearbox, and I'm wondering if you have considered ways to do that? Can orifice(s) be enlarged to enable more GPM? I would think it could be done if certain orifices are opened up. hey, i have a 2001 dodge ram that i need to rebuild my steering gear for, i just cant find the output shaft bearing you guys were showing, any clues as to where i can order one from?
You can definitely replace just the input shaft seal without disassembling the whole unit. I just did mine yesterday. The threaded end cap of the input shaft will come off by itself. Once removed, the dust cover and seal can be replaced.
On lube in bottom of case doesent feel like PS fluid So looks as if PS fluid stays inside piston assembly only ?? and oily material is loaded before closing up output shaft ??
Don't feel like it's worth the trouble, we can reseal your box and even tap for hydro assist:

This was one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen on RUclips. Thanks!!!
well done matt! I have never seen a video so complete on a steering box rebuild
Awesome job. Infinitely better than a lot of the other automotive "how to" channels I've seen.
I have watched dozens of technical videos and this is one of the best I have seen. Well done guys!

Hey just wanted you guys to know there are 2 seals for the output shaft... first is the oil seal(deepest) and the second(outer) seal is a dust seal.

Getting ready to do mine. More than your video available. Watched both. Yours is better in my opinion. Thanks. Ed
Wow! Fantastically clear presentation and explanation of what everything does in there and how to disassemble and reassemble. Thank you!
Great video , what if the adjustment screw has been adjusted?? How do you get it back too spec prior to rebuild ????
I would pay the 2 of you to fix my truck in a heartbeat. After watching this video I’m 100% sure I don’t want to deal with my steering box... 😆😆😆😆
Awesome vid man ✊🏾😎
@23:22- didnt know about the size difference, put it back together and it isnt turning freely . thanks for the detailed information.

Thanks to this video, thumbs up
Thought about rebuilding mine but after watching your awesome video I changed my mind. Gunna go buy a refurbished one instead.
God Bless Bleepin Jeep. This will be tomorrows project!
I'm not sure I can give you a part number at this point. I got the kit from orielleys and just asked for a complete rebuild seal kit for a 88 jeep cherokee steering box.
if I ever saw a perfect demo vid its this one ..........thumbs up ..........im from Trinidad an Tobago ..........hope your other vids are a blast
On 16:04 at the worm gear there is O Ring that you're showing us, is that the new O Ring or old O Ring ? That mean you didn't replace it to the new one...
nicely done! feels like I can do it :) good details . Could you pls tell me if there is a place where I can buy those ball bearings. 24 of them right
Thanks guys! Needed the seal kit and found your link in description! Will be on my porch in 3 days!
Hi Matt, I have a 1990 Chero. Just wondering if you will be making a vid. on the Renix system and go through the various tests and check points? Thanks.
not sure on that one... did you put it back together correctly?
Why would you not use power steering fluid to lube up the casing instead of Trans Fluid?
The Matt Narrating the video & rebuilding the steering box sounds like Travis Haley from Haley Strategic to me...Anyone else think so? lol Also thank you for the video I am currently rebuilding a steering box for my Dodge Ram 2500 & this video proved to be very helpful.
You said that was your first time You rebuild it like a BOSS. Lol
Nice video, thanks!
Great video.. instead off transmission fluid.. why not use power steering fluid...
Where can we find repair kit ? Thanks for this great video !
Thank You This Helped Alot I Have A 2000 Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Sport And I Was Struggling With The Ball Bearing For The Worm And Putting Them Into The Piston

yep, they are great as exercise stairs too!
Can't thank you enough for sharing this rebuild. I'm just about to start my first box on a f150/94. Looking for incite on the differences. Good Job
Great video. Worked perfect for my rebuild! Keep on the good work guys!
Great video.
Do you know why my steering would be harder to turn to the left than the right.
All of my other steering components are in good shape.
I have an input leak on the input shaft seal so i have to take it apart anyway.

What year is your car? I've got a 79 Elco, and could use all the same. Thanks. Great work!
Matt,
What is the pin diameter on that homemade spanner wrench? I want to make one of my own before I remove my gearbox. Thanks.
the only thing we didnt take apart was the top cap assembly which you can see at 2:30. As mentioned if you take that apart it will be hell getting it adjusted right again. Other than that we didnt skip anything.
Very well done video. I've never been into a gearbox before. I think I can now. Thanks.
+Jim Addison sure, no problem
Thanks for your help I've got a 1993 jeep Grand Cherokee that I've been working oni have to rebuild my gear box so wish me luck and how can you tell the difference on a rear axle of it's a Dana 30 or something else
Thanks for the link to the seal kit. Any info on where to get a replacement roller bearing for the output shaft?
not sure, maybe NAPA
I ended up buying a rebuilt one but this is really cool to know what’s in it. Makes those diagrams make more sense! (99 dodge ram van 1500 5.2)
For the output shaft bearing can it come out through the bottom or you need to drive it out upwards through the gearbox?
Hi Matt, Damn I screwed up. Put the collar on the casing of pit shaft for the box brace. also did the jcr strengthening plate. Got it all back together and pulled out of my garage and boom...Leaking now! ....Pretty sure I tightened the collar too tight and blew the seal.
Great video, great job....after seeing how much is involved i might just buy a remanufactured box for $150
Thinking about doing this myself...has the seal kit held up no leaks?...just curious...hate to do the remaned option cause i like how she drives now...never know what ya get with one of those.
Great video. Can you recommend a reputable brand of kit for rebuilding a 1974 Chevy G 10 Van power steering gear box? I'm looking at Rock Auto offerings. Gates, Edelman and ACDelco
Matt. For a yj, with ram steering. Would you use the factory box or upgrade to the Durango box with ram assist? You really know your stuff
micah yego
thanks for the excellent presentation ................in Kenya where can i purchase the GMC sreering gear box or shaft
Thanks! That's everything I needed to know. With the Year, Make and Model, I was able to look it up on Omega's site, and then when I finally found a picture of it, it matches what I'm looking for.

Do you have a video on just changing the seal? Do you have to take it all apart?
I have steering play and when you turn the shaft that comes from the wheel and goes into the box it turns partially with ease.
Does this rebuild get rid of ALL play in the steering?
Dewalt is also like to know how to get rid of steering box slop.
The nut on top he said not to turn is how you adjust the play. 1/4 turn tighter at a time and then take it for a test run
Is it possible to just remove piston to replace teflon rings ? Working on 2003 dodge ram 2500 turns hard to left only no leaks no binding.
I have an 88 S10 Blazer . My steering box is leaking from the input shaft . Is it possible to just change the seal and fix it without breaking it down ? And will this stop the leak or is it that the o rings need to be replaced on the piston input ?
Would this be the same for early Toyota boxes too? They look very similar
Question: what makes the steering lose in cold weather steering feels normal after driving a bit, pump or steering box ?
What is the best type of grease to use in a manual mechanical box of a civic honda ? thank you man
Very well done video and critically helpful. Thanks! It would be useful to know the total number of ball bearings. What was the total count, 24?
Yes

Great video. Lots of details on what to do and not do. You made it look easy, I'll find out tonight.
Hey, great video! Very thorough, and I like the way you explain things in more detail...thanks!
Quick question: What is the model number for that steering box unit? What did it come out of?
I've got a leaky steering box in my 05 Duramax, and it looks a lot like that...
Excellent video. ! Very good explanation of the rebuild!!
Thanks
What about timing the sector shaft grear to the rack gear to get equals turns right to left
hey i chaneged the seals from where the steering column connects to the gear box n it still leaks any advice👍🏻? it went in straight i used a socket to push it in even
Very well done----- I liked the "Intermission" Part
Great vid. OMG teh lulz at 10:00 when you freestyled the jacks +25 street cred.
Stay gold.
I put new seals in my steering gear per the video, bled all the air out and now my steering wheel spins to the right when I start the engine. I can turn it back but spins back right when I let go of the wheel. Besides a new steering gear, do you have any suggestions?
Just finished the job using this video!! Thanks!!
Great vid and thanks for the help this would have sucked doing blind or on the crapping instruction sheet in the rebuild kit lol
I dont see anything about re installing. Is it difficult? Does the worm gear need to be set at a certain position eith the steering wheel. I feel there is a big key piece missing there.
What size should the pins on the spanner wrench be?
Thanks! :)
Is the 1-3" pin wrench I have going to be wide enough for this?
if the bearing is bad it should be replaced. the nut on top only adjusts the backlash of the gears inside.
with my truck running it seen like i dont have no tention in the wheels seems like its nothing hook up it feels that loose...its a 90 fullsize k5 blazer 35x12 tires on it..if that will help u out any
Great video and information. Pressure sould pretty much be the same(?), but how would one go about enabling more flow through the gearbox so the lock-to-lock speed isn't diminished? I'm using a pump that does 7 gpm and 2000 psi.

damn i got a used box for 20 bucks. im impressed that you will go through all this work to save a few bucks, well done
hey, i have a 2001 dodge ram that i need to rebuild my steering gear for, i just cant find the output shaft bearing you guys were showing, any clues as to where i can order one from?
Great video guys, very professional and informative. Keep up the good work.
😘
How far in do you have to put the seals in?
I had no clue about the balls being 2 different size and colors. Thank you!
can you replace the input shaft seal without taking everything apart and out of the jeep?
+Tim Stephenson no
O that totally sucks thanks for the info
+Parker Bankston I said fuck it and replaced everything.... new gear box and new pump... works great now lol
You can definitely replace just the input shaft seal without disassembling the whole unit. I just did mine yesterday. The threaded end cap of the input shaft will come off by itself. Once removed, the dust cover and seal can be replaced.
Before I do this to my XJ and port it what was the tool used at 16:52 ?
Will this fix the clicking my steering box is making when I turn the wheel?
I have a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee
The jacks are pretty neat. You need a piece of pipe to put on the handle that comes toward you.
On lube in bottom of case doesent feel like PS fluid So looks as if PS fluid stays inside piston assembly only ?? and oily material is loaded before closing up output shaft ??
