Chris... here is a easy cleaning idea... I take a large metal coffee can, and a $9 single burner hotplate from Walmart. I fill can 1/2 way/// or as needed for depth... with Purple Power. Bring it to near boiling and insert your parts. All the goopey heavy grease will emulsify and everything will come out spotless... then rise with a hose... then put back in as required. I do this with hubs without having to take them apart... they come out like new.
It would be like a “Simple Green” sold in the Midwest and elsewhere. It is strange, as both products are environmentally safe, mostly made using the oils found in the skin of oranges. ZEP is a large company that sells variety to cleaning products yet not sold in some states. ZEP sells a 55 gallon drum of powder that is an orange powder. Smells like oranges. True story, in a shop in California, a shop was closing for the day and a tech scooped some ZEP floor cleaner. You can wet the floor and spread it around like extra dirty spots to brush, broom, mop or like our dealer, used an electric push scrubber. The tech sprinkled the orange power on the damp floor & the power turns green immediately. After clearing the floor, you hit it with your water hose. Part of the green watered floor solution came out the door and was running downhill away from the building on a white concrete slab. A person driving around the building though this was “Green Anti-Freeze” headed for the curb that drains into a nearby creek. The person freaked and dialed 911 to report this unthinkable crime against nature. 2 fire trucks, police and 1 ambulance came quickly to clean up the violation, arrest the offender and provide first aide to any person or creature may have ingested. Once explained and examined, it was explained to the concern citizen to calm then and reduce there fears. Now they can sleep better. But the law in this county had a pollution rule that the response required the shop owner to get a $7,500 ticket. He had to pay a lawyer and pay to have a ZEP salesperson to show MHDS to court to have the ticket dropped. Close call. Hello Chris my power steering gear box is leaking at the input shaft tip. Some shafts don't have a round piolet shaft at the end of the input shaft I guess it's called a piolet shaft but I took it apart and there is no way to service that. I tried to tap out the dowel pins but they wouldn't budge maybe I can get it welded on the inside to seal it or use epoxy. I don't know if I can get that piece part separately. I'm thinking about just getting an entire rebuilt box. I bought a complete seal kit and replaced all the o rings and shaft seals but that was in vain. I don't know why there is that nipple shaft its not needed. My car is a 1976 firebird and I think its the original box.
Would rebuilding this way fix a sloppy box? My escalade ext has nearly an inch of float on center. Also it seems to turn faster right than it does left from the same amount of input.
going to try my luck now just ordered kit from auto zone for 38 bucks, I got a 68 pro street lemans and it's all over the road lol. hope it works I got a lot of play in gear box
if you have play in the box...... you need to return that kit and buy a new box... just trying to save you time and headaches.... the process to get the play out (because you have to learn how do it it) is not worth it...... im hoping you have eliminated the fact that the play might be in the drag link, tie rod ends, etc...
So I know how to do the process of getting play out of the box which is my main problem, but since I’m at it I’m going to rebuild. Would you recommended just rebuilding and tightening it up per the manual vs buying a new reman? I hear that’s all they do with the reman ones anyways
Do you think it's possible to flush out a good condition steering box that was just sitting collecting dust? I wanna use the box but I can see that some dust found its way inside but I don't wanna take apart the whole thing.

Unlike the response from “Trillriffy”, the input torsion bar could have broken. Thin ones have less road and would have to be salvaged from another box. Thick ones have little flex and produce less steering wheel force to turn. If the rag joint is not about to snap, the type of steel and nylon balls used on the ball screw may have failed. A guide could have come loose and would create this malfunction also. Best of luck. Still way cheaper than a reman.

Dean Kay when did you guys start referring to yourselves as “techs or technicians?” I graduated in 90 and auto mechanics were still called mechanics. Now everyone calls mechanics, techs or technicians. Like they are ashamed of being called a mechanic.
Dean is a mechanic...tech is some pompous way of saying you work on cars. I was an aircraft mechanic...not a "tech."
Instead of gas might want to use diesel. Less bad crap to breathe and absorb in your skin.
All good stuff here=thanks for a great video on this rebuild. PS-Love your carefree attitude-wish I owned one~!
You convinced me that I might just eat the money to buy a new box. I am pretty mechanically inclined. I do most of my own work. But I’ll end up forgetting something in this process and screw it all up.
Step #1, put on gloves
🍪
Thanks for showing me what to do, like paying someone to do it for me 😁
Love The Pot blaring in the background! Great video and great music!
Does anyone know where to get those steel balls from? Mine are 12x 7.120mm and 12x 7.138mm
Thumbs up for the soundtrack!
Yeah I’d screw that up. So I just bought a rebuilt. Lol. I don’t trust myself. Plus mine is as old as the car. 30yrs old. So I got a rebuild so I can paint it and make it look nicey nice.
Joe, That was an excellent series of videos on rebuilding the steering box!
lose the awful music
🤔
Wow thanks for taking the time to make the video. Its a great guide. Very well done Thanks
I ran across this video while working on the gear box on my Suburban... You share the same name as my late brother who died in 2015... so I had to subscribe!
I'm here for my 89 suburban as well!
Props to TOOL playing in the background
When you take those 4 bolts off and try and take that shaft mine has a snap wrong and won’t come out
Followed this to fix mine. Works great. Thanks for your know how.
damn
I cant remember the name of the song at 12:30 someone figure it out for me.
Dude...you alright? You seem overly stressed over such a minor component.
You are a wealth of knowledge brother. Thanks for all the vids. Good shit!!!
OK, I'm gonna just buy a rebuilt one.
What is the part number for the kit I can get seal kits but not with the bearings
So far so good working on my 77 GMC, where's part two ?
Samuel Jackson - "say tray one more GD time..."
haha i had to play back the video in the beginning... "is that Pelican in the background???" nice! Gotta get into this job on a GM ZQ8 box. Had a lil slop in the steering, was told to tighten up the allen bolt 1/8th of a turn, and that made the steering super stiff, turned it back, and still super stiff. Loosened it another 1/8th turn and still feels like i'm driving on flat tires. Try to fix something and end up making it worse! haha
Tool ftw. Tool builds everything.
New album coming soon
It was a BITCH taking the retainer for the cap off when i did mine today.
It was seized up. Pried on it and hit it with wd40 and bent the crap out of it. And it eventually came out
Ran the piston forward to pop the cap loose then suck a small allan wrench in the hole and pushed the cap out using
A little force. ..... the o ring there was the only thing leaking
But i flushed most of the box out with wd40
Polished the output shaft
Replaced the seals and washers for it.
But i couldnt get the bearings out .... their wore out a little..... bled the air out...... now i need more fluid...
I never knew you could rebuild the steering gear, back about 14 years ago my steering gear went out and I had to find a nice used one at the junk yard.
Of course times have changed now and I have better income and the internet, now I would just buy an already rebuilt one from eBay.
But this is still handy knowledge when you need it.
