On the water Gt56 vs Gt54!!

  • First I would like to preface this video by saying I haven't had nearly as much time on the water with the gt56 as I have my gt54, so I am still learning the ins and outs of this transducer. With that being said, I LOVE what I am seeing so far and I wish I had a good way to record my screen without glare on these Echomaps! I will definitely have more videos in the future to further cover this topic as I know this is only scratching the surface.
    This Video will show you some of the differences between Garmins new Gt56 transducer vs the Gt54 and show you on the water differences over the same structure etc. For more information and specs comparing the Gt56 to the Gt54 check out my other video here:
    • GT56 UHD vs GT54 UHD ...
    I would also like to point out that some of the screenshots that were posted towards the end of the video have a note stating "Di and SI frequencies are the same Image will be darker" This is because while i was on the water i discovered that when you have both the side imaging and down imaging set on the same frequency (which is possible with the gt56 not the gt54) that the returned image would be darker. Check out my quick tip on that topic here to see exactly how dramatic it can be:
    • Garmin Gt56 1 min Quic...
    Id also like to give a huge shout out to the guys over at Hennessey Outdoor Electronics as they are the ones responsible for me getting my hands on this GT56 so that i could make this video before the water froze up. If you would like to get your own GT56 please give them a shout and tell them i sent you .

    Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more!

    I bought a 63sv w/ UHD54 for my Hobie Outback and it is way beyond anything I need and light years ahead of what was used when I went fishing with my dad in the 70’s through 90’s. Now I see livescope where you can even see your lure in the water. Way beyond what I need. The 54 is as advanced as I go.

    Thank you for watching the video. i upgraded the sonar for kayak bass fishing from striker 7sv to ecomap ultra 102sv.
    select gt54 or gt56
    There was no need for gt56 in lake bass fishing, not deep sea fishing.
    He said that the gt56 is only good in deep water than the gt54, but the resolution is a little lower and the clarity is lower.
    And only the 800HZ frequency was added, there is no difference, but I chose GT56 after watching your video before purchase. It is expensive, but I hope my choice is a good choice.

    Was able to pickup a Echomap UHD 73sv for $500 from Bass Pro Shop and even after seeing this video I am happy with my purchase. This is my first fish finder so I think it will still be a great added addition and much better than if I had gone for a CV model of similar price. The extra $400 for the GT56 is the same cost to upgrade models to get one with it so I can always upgrade if needed. For now I will try and hold out on the GT54 until Garmin inevitably releases a new model that tanks the price of the GT56.

    • @MGMarineTech

      Down imaging I use much less brightness and contrast as most of time it doesn’t have as much water to penetrate (being that it’s going straight down and not off to the side) so the returns are much brighter. I don’t know those settings off the top of my head. For the most part they change a lot depending on the bottom structure and water I am in.

      Start off by using the same settings that I show for side imaging. Except different frequency for side and down. Then play with brightness and contrast. You want enough of each that you get a good picture without soo much that it washes out directly under the boat.
      Another tip for down imaging is to manually set the depth and run it about 10’ deeper than the water you are in. So if you are in 20’ of water set the range at 30 this will show more bottom structure

    What’s your depth here? I have the gt56 and if I get into deeper than 50’ the black area (water column) takes up the whole screen if I’m at 100’ range. I have to go out to 200’ to use it. Any recommendations? Seems to do this at all 3 frequencies.

    • @MGMarineTech
      @MGMarineTech  3 года назад

      Yes the black area is the water column. So if you have your range set to 70’ and you are in 50’ Of water, you will only be scanning roughly 20’ of the actual bottom.
      In 50’ the gt56 will have no issues scanning at 100’ range. I use 100’ range 80% of the time in water from 5’ to 50’ in 1070

      Hi Bob,
      The side imaging battle is really between Humminbird and Garmin. A lot of people say the humminbirds have the best side imaging, but from what I’ve seen, the garmins with the gt56 is just as good.
      For me it boiled down to ease of use and versatility as well as customer support. Garmin wins hands down in those categories.

    • @Askeyb2011
      @Askeyb2011 2 года назад

      @@MGMarineTech We did have a Echomap 94SV 2017. The side imaging was terrible and support did not help me even said it is working. I had excellent support on everything else. I liked the features of the Garmin unit. I could create combo screens, set the order for screens. I also prefer the map recording option of the Garmin which only requires going to the store and buy a standard 32 GB Mini SD Card.
      We bought the Humminbird Helix 12 Mega Si GPS G2N June 2017. Humminbird map recording is not all that good plus to save your map requires a $100 SD Card that you can back up data only, card goes bad have to buy a new one. Plus I think the Garmin recorded a wider path for map. I sold the Garmin Echomap 94SV because the main option I wanted was Side Imaging and it was terrible.
      The Humminbird had great side imaging first trip on the water. Problem is it isn't always good and works one time and not the next. I showed schools of Chinook and a bait ball of Anchovy one trip and never did that again. I tried everything to get it to do that again and never did. Humminbird support never gave any real answer. I did get good support from Humminbird otherwise. Humminbird unit sent in five times for repair twice replacing circuit board. Last time replaced power head and two transducers.
      Does the Garmin have the option to use two transducers like the Humminbird units. I have been running a Sonar and Si transducer with a Y cable that connects the sonar from the sonar transducer and Si, Di temp from the Side Imaging Transducer. Each is adjusted to get the best sonar and side imaging. Wondering if Garmin has a similar option.

      @@Askeyb2011 was your echomap 94sv a plus or a Uhd? The uhd units have a much better image, especially with the gt56. For the best side imaging I would recommend a “ultra” unit they come in a 10” or a 12” as far as a budget unit, and then from there the top of the line is the gpsmap units but they are big money.
      You can run 2 transducers on a garmin with a ycable. But you only need to do that when you run a separate 2d transducer such as a thru hull for better at speed 2d readings. (If you mount a all in one transducer properly that’s not a issue most of the time)
      But yes all in all garmin wins in my book. Especially since the introduction of the gt56 transducers.

    • @MGMarineTech

      Those two transducers are VASTLY different, and meant for two different scenarios. The gt51 is meant for offshore and deep water
      The gt56 is a high definition transducer and meant for “shallow” water

    how comparable is the gt 56 compared to humminbird mega 360 or just humminbird side imaging.

    • @MGMarineTech
      @MGMarineTech  3 года назад

      I personally can’t answer that. Others I know that have used both said that are extremely similar now.
      Humminbird has been the leader in side imaging for a while now but the gt56 is the best transducer garmin has had yet in my eyes. And from what I’m seeing I would say it’s right there too.

      @@MGMarineTech i have 2 93sv echomap plus one on bow and 1 on console. Recently bought livescope. if i was to buy the 106sv uhd does that come with the gt56 ducer? What would be best setup at bow? 106 as the down and side with 93 used for livescope or vice versa. this would be instead of buying a 360.

    • @MGMarineTech
      @MGMarineTech  3 года назад

      Sorry I missed part of your other question.
      As far as it compared to 360 they are two different tools. 360 is essentially side imaging that spins 360* it’s all still “history” side imaging just gives you off to the side and only really works while you are moving forward.

    • @MGMarineTech
      @MGMarineTech  3 года назад

      As far as the new units, they should come with the gt56, but I would verify to make sure . I would personally use the 106 unit at the console for side and down imaging due to its screen size and its screen resolution. Those are two key factors when it comes to clarity in side view and down view.
      Then I would either have one or both 93’s up front for live scope etc. if you only run 1 up front then put the other at the console for mapping.
      And make sure to network them all together. This way you’ll be able to share waypoints across all screens, and even share all connected transducers to any screen (including. Live scope)

      Yes I know, I showed that.
