Great explanation about the Lonestar. After fiddling with my amp for 4 years, I decided to buy a Marshall jcm800….until I saw your video. after a few hours of trying, I have the sound I've always wanted. Thank you so much for your great explanation! Now I understand how it works.
You’re welcome
One of the best reviews and demos I have come across. The folks at Mesa should pay you! I just took delivery of my Lone Star today and this tutorial helped me tremendously! If not for this review it would have taken me days to figure it all out. Instead I dialed in amazing tones and I am off and running! Well done! Cheers!
Thanks a lot. I have no relation to Mesa boogie it’s the amp I use and I also really love it.
All the gear I show on the channel is mine and it’s something that I really like.
Thank you, Mr. Budda! The most logical explanation of how tube amps work, and the best explanation of the Boogie that I have seen in 35 years of playing guitar and using tube amplifiers.
Thanks a lot! I’m really glad you liked it!
blue bird....no dobt, its unreal what people dont get!
Very nice.... Thank you for the thorough run down on the Lone Star. I adore that Mesa tone.
great!!! I'm glad it helped.
Budda, awesome review and in depth explanation on how to use the eq. section of this amp, you did some things that opened up tonal ideas I have not explored with my Lonestar. You have a new subscriber, thank you.
Your description of how to EQ an amp was great. Thank you, I'm a subscriber now.
great video, SUPER helpful on the EQ, thanks!
Hi Budda, I have a Lonestar too. Fabulous amp...its probably all anyone would ever need ! Had mine for years but I really enjoyed your run-through - a fresh point of view is always good as you always learn something. Thanks again.
I have mine coming in a couple of days. Your video has helped me no end! Thanks a lot.
Great to know that
Thanks
Budda is the best, i am totally fan of Doctor Guitar videos
I've had this amp for years, but really never understood how it works (or was meant to work) until I watched this video. Thanks!
Excellent review, I can't wait for mine to be delivered. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome.
Great demo of an incredible amp. I have a Lonestar Special, and I love it. My favorite amps are Mesa Boogie, and this one is my favorite. Great playing too.
It’s one of the best amps out there for sure!!!
Awesome. Thank you for this. I just acquired one of these and this was very helpful.
Thank you so much for this video. I decided to invest in a lonestar 2x12 after you showed me that it is not so complicated, just VERY different than other amps. I have Fenders, Marshalls, Vox, Blackstar, but this is my new favorite. You are such a great player and teacher.
Thanks a lot for your kind words.
Dude you are a wizard! Showed this to my friend who just bought a Lonestar. I'm a Mark V owner, but this video is killer. Looking forward to checking out your other videos. Subscribed!
I got my first Mesa - a 5:25 Express and I'm digging it! It's a 10" combo, and the speaker isn't great, but plug it into a cab and it's a different beast. The MESA tube compression and reverb is incredible. The clean channel and crunch channels are my favourite.
Mesa Boogie is simply great!!!!
Thanks for a great review, I have a MkIV, I set it and forget it, not the easiest of amps to get your tone....but since your idea of everything off and adding has helped me get what I really wanted.
Great to know that
well done this demo. i use this amp/combo on stage for nearly all genres. the mesaboogie lonestar and the roland jc 120 for the ultimate high clean sounds....thats all...thats it. a brilliant combination ....😎🇬🇧🇬🇬
Nice toooooooooooone! I love this amp. My wish. I'll still have one.
This was incredibly informative. Thank you very much for sharing.
Mark De Souza I’m glad it helped
This is the lone star classic, not special then, yes? Special is 5/15/30 and classic is 10/50/100 i believe. What are your thoughts on the differences between the two?
Yes this is the classic 100watts. The main difference is the power and the headroom, and the output tubes. In this it is 6L6 and the Special has EL84 which I love deeply. I think the Special is spongier and more vintage sounding than the Classic.
Budda thank you for such a comprehensive review. Just picked up a LS Special Head... much of the decision was based on what I heard here and couldn't be more satisfied with it. Decided to go the EL84 route because I already have a 6L6 based IIC+ HR and a Mark V:90 and wanted some variation. Now I'm hooked :)
The special is really great.
Thanks much Budda.
Nice tone clean, i love it!
Thanks
Awesome playing!!!
Thanks a lot
I love this video. I have the lonestar special version. Thanks to this video I did understand the preamp section. It would be great to see you doing a demo of that version.
I bought this by mistake. I ordered the Special but they sent the classic. When I played it I loved it , so I kept the amp. But the Special is incredible

the best !!! It help me a lot!

Great Video!
The lone Star classic and the lone Star special IMO were Mesa boogie at their best!
Competing with the popular Boutique quality and sounding amps,
The Mesa boogie lone Star models are at that level.
I'm not impressed with the newer Mesa boogie Amps as perhaps it could be my imagination but I feel Mesa boogie now is starting
to cut corners .
This has to do with Mesa boogie being sold to Gibson
Remember Randall Smith the previous owner and founder of Mesa boogie
Randall smiths first goal was to produce the best sounding and best quality guitar amps in the world.
Randall Smith called the shots and would never sacrifice the quality of his amps to have a bigger profit margin
But GibsonWOULD AND IS Doing THAT IMO !
I can tell you that I owned all the popular vintage amps, like every fender blackface model and a 71 point to point Marshall superlead,
Even had an all original 1965 Vox AC30
I could never settle for anything that wasn't a handwired point to point circuit,
I decided to just give the lone Star special a shot after my Amp technician retired.
I was just blown away by the sound and the feel of the amp
The lone Star special was like the best sounding slightly overdriven Vox amp that I have ever heard .
Think Rory Gallagher in (Live inEurope 1972 .
I think it could be live in Ireland 1971
(What in the world) ?
And the clean on the loneStar special is also beautiful with that reverb.
But just recently I've finally aquuired I loneStar classic which I'm still learning how to use.
With the 6l6 power tubes the classic has a different feel and sound than the EL84 based loneStar special.
The loneStar classic sounds exactly like a blackface fender amp
I mean the lone Star classic takes pedals so well that you WILL NOT believe it!!
ANYWAYS,
I can tell you that any guitarist that loves vintage fender amps,
WILL just love the loneStar classic!
It took me awhile r to find a used loneStar classic
They are getting hard to find
Great video thanks!
Thanks a lot for your comment. I love the lonestar too. I’m looking for a special, but they are hard to find at a fair price
First time ever seeing you and your videos, subscribed after 2 seconds.
M L Eh! Eh! That’s great. Thanks a lot
Your Knaggs plus the LoneStar is a great sound! I love when you bring out the Knaggs in your videos. You are totally making me want both a Knaggs and a Mesa Boogie.
Kyle Quevillon ah ah!!! Thanks a lot!
This is the best instructional on eq'ing a Mesa I've seen, they're amps should come with your video instructions as some people have a hard time setting Mesa's eq section. Awesome video, I wasn't even looking for an instructional and this helped I have the 212 combo version, heavy as hell but something about combos I like the pain is worth it. Thanks for the vid.
Great videos!
Irakliy Sherozia thanks a lot. Keep on watching the show.
Just secured one finally and this is by far the best Lone Star tutorial on RUclips. Manual was great but seeing it in action really helped with some of the controls and features. My ears start playing tricks on me when I’m with the amp switching things in and out on the fly.
One question since you didn’t go too far into detail on the loop itself. The send volume on the FX loop. Is unity essentially 12 and what’s the overall purpose of that feature? We’re shoegaze/post so I run a lot of wet pedals for ambience.
The Fx loop volume allows you to send the proper level to the devices you use with it. And it’s also abostele or attenuator
Is yours noisy at low volumes even ? Loved it and sold the combo because of weight and am going to find a head as its without doubt the best amp I've owned however I'm not sure mine was typical, it was the older second 100/50 one and was very buzzy .
Mine is perfect. That’s why I use it in almost all my videos
That does it. I'm buying one! Mesa boogie should pay you..... Thank you for this.
You’re welcome. It’s an incredible amp
Ok.....this guy is playing a Knaggs and a Lonestar is his choice for road, plus 2 gorgeous Marshalls (JMP and some vintage plexi) in background...SUBSCRIBED!
Eh! Eh! Eh! You're the man! Welcome
i really love the mesas but i like the heavy tones of metal these amps put out. they can do it all. as far as playing goes i think i like the ambient music that's lent with some of the new delay and reverb FX pedals. but i like all music, i want to learn blues, classical and jazz. id like to learn it all but i probably wont be a shredder or fully understand theory to the extent id like to, i just enjoy spending time playing around and tweaking things or experimenting with tones.
Matthew Barger hey.thanks a lot. Never say never! Just put your effort and time into whatever you want to achieve and you’ll do it.
I found your channel when I was considering a Lonestar, great great review and it really sold me on the amp. Mesa should give you royalties👍. Also have to ask if you are an actual doctor on the side to afford all your gear, wow what a collection.
j f ah ah ! I’m a professional musician and producer and I’m doing this for 26 years!!!
I’m glad you liked the amp. It’s definitely one of my favorite amps of all time
Budda Guedes awesome channel man, keep up the great work!
Love this video. You ever play the lonestar special? Wish the drive was footswitchable as well. Way more useful than footswitchable reverb. I heard it possible to mod this. Don't know if I have the guts to let someone change anything.
I switched from the Fillmore, which Is awesome, to the Lone Star. I got the head and a 1x12. I can't wait!!!!
It’s way better amp. Good move
Amazing review Budda! I have a question: have you ever tried this beast with a good fuzz face in front of it? It seems like cranking a bit the gain end eq could be the excellent foundation for a classic fuzz sound! Any feedback about that? Thanks man!
Paolo Giacci watch episode 35 where I show my pedals. I use a ZVex Fuzz Factory and a Roger Mayer Octavia. It's a great amp.
Hi an before all, Thank you so much for all your vids... so many pleasure. (Sorry i speak french 😉)
I play on a mesa roadster and When i try all the knobs on 0 just the gain give me a big bass and low mid sound (really not beautifull) is it normal ???
Thanks for all ..: i really think to buy a Lonestar ... (do you think it could better take overdrive pedals than roadster? .. and i dont play metal)
I LOVE your videos Budda! Can you get your hands on a Mesa CA Tweed to compare to the Lonestar or at least review it? I can't decide between those 2 heads! :D
I would love to play one. The lonestar seems a lot more versatile due to having two Channels and two master volume, but....
4:02 I think we better wait till tomorrow lol
Eh eh!!!
Brilliant,thanks..
You’re welcome
Budda, do you think it is possible using a lone star head at home (1x12 cabinet)?
Does it have a good master volume to control levels? How does it sound at low levels?
I am moving away from digital and looking forward for a good amp. It has to be compatible
with home usage since it is 75% of my playing. I'd like to get a tone similar to
the Andy Timmons one with the help of some pedals.
Thanks in advance for your comments.
mmo1968 you can get Andy Timmons tone without pedals. The master is super effective. And if you want you can always set it at 10 watts wich is quiet enough. A
Though I must say it's an overpowered amp for home use.
Hi Budda, can you please let me know that. On the back of the amp, did you set on the Silicon Diodes or Tube Rectifier Track??? Thanks alot. I really enjoy your Doctor Guitar Series. Very helpul.
Bill Ben I don't remember but I usually use the rectifier tube for the extra compression.
Hi Budda! I'm really enjoying your channel.
Could you please shoot a video about your Royal Atlantic RA-100?
Also, have you ever tried the Electra Dyne? I have a 27" 1x12 combo and I love it. It's been my favorite amp for a few years now.
Hollis Prince thanks! Ive already did an episode on the Royal Atlantic. Look for it on the channel. As for the Electra Dyne Ive tried it once a long time ago and I don't remember it's tone too well.
Thinking about getting the 1x12 lone star or a hand wired custom deluxe reverb. Thoughts? Im mostly after good blackface tones, I play blues and classic rock. Not really a gig’er anymore.
Gustavo Ramos they’re both great amps, but very different beasts!!
The deluxe reverb is a one trick poney but a very good one. The lone star is super complete and able to do a lot of things and it has a drive channel. If you want to overdrive the Deluxe reverb you will have to play it really loud. With the lonestar you can play it really quiet. I also love the lonestar special!! And it’s a little less louder!!!
Hey, looking to get this amp now--so you don't use the fan usually? How much do you play with/without it?
I always play with the fan on!!! It’s a killer amp
Just out of interest i just sold my classic combo which had 100/50 options as it was just too heavy but the best sounds Ive had so replacing with a head. It was quite noisy even at low level , how do you find it ?
Not noisy at all!!’
I've got a Lone Star and it won't get overdriven when set to the chanell 1. I think I have previous version though with 100W & 50W settings only, no fan switch so the WWII siren is on all the time...
Eh! Eh! Mine overdrives if you push EQ
@@BuddaGuedes I need to try that on mine as I probably never did... ;)
Let me know if it worked
Here you use 6L6s.
Would it make huge différencies with EL84s or EL34s?
It would be different for shire, specially the EL84
Hey Budda, how about doing a video with this head through a 4x10 cab?
All my episodes is a 410 cab including this one
@@BuddaGuedes Says in the description that it's through a TA 112. Anyway, thanks. I watched a few others now. Great content! Keep up the great work. Going to try mine with a 4x10. Cheers!
I always use mine in almost episodes with its 410 Mesa boogie lonestar cab
You just earned a subscriber. Your channel is great! Keep the videos coming. I think you just sold me on the Lonestar. Also, what kind of guitar are you playing?
Brett Thanks a lot! my guitar it's a Knaggs Choptank! My favorite guitar of all time! Keep on watching the show!
Budda Guedes I just picked up a Lonestar Classic head from eBay. In your experience, does it sound best with an open or closed back cabinet for classic rock? Thanks!
It's designed to use with an open back cabinet but it works great with both. It's a very bassy and deep amp só you should use a speaker that can handle it and that gives you some brightness. But it sounds epic with a 4x12" too. It's really a matter of taste.
your twin reverb amp is better in my opinion if there are you considering to use it again in the giggs ?
No. I'm not thinking about using it in gigs. It's bnot that pedal friendly and it's super heavy and too clean.
Does Mesa Boogie include instructions on how to obtain the Fender tone and the Marshall tone?
Freddie Bishop hey there! Not directly but in the manual they call it American Clean, and British Rock.
Do you think the 2x12 combo can do John Mayer tone well?
I think the 2x12" is exactly the same as the 1x12", with a little more bass projection an more apparent volume, due to having one more speaker and the cabinet size.
Wow. You need a new fan. It shouldn't be so loud. Mine was quiet. Used it always. Very hot amp.
Mine was always like this
how is the 2x12 combo version of this?
Anthony Vo it's great but heavy as hell
if you think this is versatile and vintage sounding you should checkout the Colby Amps.
Brian Cullen thanks for the suggestion
Brian Cullen Colby amps are amazing...Colby also manufactures the new Park amps as well.
How is the effects loop of this amp? I heard mesa amps can be very finicky and picky with delay and preamp pedals.
Anthony Vo I find it very clear and easy to work with. Nothing like the dual caliber.
Ok. Na realidade tive um problema nas com ele novo, mas trocaram-me as Válvulas ainda na garantia e ficou óptimo .
This amp has to many knobs for me
I get it! watch the episode on the Surpo Thunderbolt or Fender Pro Junior. Volume and Tone. It's a great feeling.
YOU CAN REALLY FUCK UP THE SOUND OF A GREAT AMP!!!...
Joe Mamma what do you mean?
WAAY TO MUCH....WAAAY PASSED THE A LITTLE GRITTY SOUNDING, YOU'RE OFF INTO SPACE PUSHED WAY TO FAR..
The video is supposed to show the amp in all its possibilities. And the great thing about music is that people have different tastes. I just happen to really like the way the lonestar can be so versatile.
is this el 34 or 6l6?
6L6
