  • I made this video to do a review on my Mesa Boogie Lone Star Special Guitar Amp. I apologize for such a lengthy video, but I did a pretty through review of this amp and got some good tones.

terrific review, and great playing, picking one up tomorrow!
your commentary was humorous, and not pre planned, which is so much better to watch!
    hope you're still playing!

Hey Cole, thanks for posting. I'm a player from Maryland and play in a gigging band--mostly small stuff, small locals bars, VFW also, and backyard parties etc. I have a few different fender deluxe reverbs that are my go to as well as a Dr Z and Fuchs, and a Lonestar Special. Mine is a 2014 Lonestar Special, all custom color also, all black with black grill. I have always been reluctant to gig it as I can never find the right sounds--but I know they are in the amp, just so man danm knobs. When I saw your very recent 2017 video, I decided to setup my channel EQ's and drives the way you have your set, not a bad spot at all. I may tweak it a bit, but I think I may gig my Lonestar this Thursday and see how it goes. My main reason for buying this amp two years ago was I wanted an amp that needed no pedals, clean dirt and solo is all I really need, and a delay once in a while. It keeps my rig minimized. I'll check back in and let ya know how it goes. -Scott
I meant to also include that lately I been playing more humbucker guitars than single coil with my band. I love teles and have a tone of them, but lately its either been LP's Reverened, or PRS's and the lonestar does well with humbuckers. The one thing I struggle with on the dirty channel is not getting muddy. No matter how much I lower the bass on the EQ, play with the presents or mess with the thick and thicker switch power chords and full bar chords often get muddy. We play a lot of Black Crows, Satana, Steppenwolf, Stray Cats, BTO etc. I'll check in after Thursdays giving your settings a try.

Scott DeMatteo, hey man, I just saw where you posted about humbucker pickups. I play humbuckers through this amp too, usually Les Paul's, or an SG. I run an effects loop with a Holy Grail Reverb, and a MXR Carbon Copy delay. I also run a MXR Berserker Overdrive in directly to my amp, not in the effects loop. I run the overdrive pedal over the overdrive channel to give it a little grit, kind of like a Randy Rhodes or Zakk Wylde setup. In my band we play a little of everything from Kool & The Gang, to Lynyrd Skynyrd, to Stephenwolf, and even some country. I usually carry one of my strats, that tele, and a Les Paul. But the thing with the humbuckers, they will get a little muddy at times, and you gotta re eq and cut some lows outta those humbuckers. Anyhow, I tried to reply one other time, but I just saw your post about your humbuckers. Anyhow, thanks for the comments, and let me know how the Thursday gig goes. Also, do you have any videos of your band? I'd like to check y'all out.

We don't have any videos on RUclips, a few on facebook. Friday night, my band's name is The Thursday's. On Friday night, we hosted a Thursday's & Friends, we have about a dozen musicians come out and play with us, we must have had at least 14 people on stage at a time. Here's one recording from Friday. soundcloud.com/dematteoss/25-of-6-to-4

    I like this guy.
He really demos the features and tones, which is why I'm viewing it.
I get tired of seeing demos where the guy just jams his favorite song for five minutes but doesn't talk about the equipment he's supposedly demonstrating.

For more cut in a band (and more gain overall), try running the effects loop level at about 1:00 (so opposite from where you have it). This will push the power amp a little harder which will add some mids and makes it cut better. I've never had a problem with a band mix, and I play in a rock band. Also, the drive function can be modded to be foot switchable which makes it effectively a 3 channel amp.

Good honest review of the LSS, Cole. I like mine, too, but agree about the larger venue. You'll need a little more air moving to hang with the band in a bigger club.

I'm looking at the Lonestar Classic. What do you think about the sound for recording/bedroom levels? Does the master volume down low still get a good tone?

You say it lacks power in bigger venues.
Have you tried adding a second 8ohms speaker cab even a 1x12 will double the amount of air you are moving not to mention it will drop the amp to 4ohms and give you an extra 5watts so 35watts output.
Sound pressure levels work log rhythmically so (SPL)works to the power of 10
So basically to get twice as loud as 30w you need 300w then 3000w etc
Sorry I’m a little late to the party.

Cool review. Thanks :). It is so different from the 100 watt Lone Star. I guess that's to be expected (different tubes etc) but still a bit of a shock just how different.

@@MESABOOGIE01 Right on, man. I have one myself but lately I've been on the fence on whether or not to keep it. I'd still get a LS Classic if I did move it. Does it still keep up at your gigs?

    • @MESABOOGIE01
      @MESABOOGIE01  2 года назад

Yeah it’s held up pretty well. The only issue I had with it was when we had 2 weeks worth of snow, which is rare in Texas, but I couldn’t get it out of my band trailer and the cold weather cracked the 5Y3S Rectifier Tube. I got another one for it and haven’t had any other issues.

dude if that amp is not loud enough to keep up with your band, then your stage volume is WAY too loud. I have owned two of these and know about guys playing too loud on stage lol. I dont know why musicians get into volume wars on stage but it seems to be a common thing. I also used a Mesa 5:50 single 12 speaker and it was awesome with a lot of headroom, way more than needed for live band situations :-) and the 5:50 is a few hundred cheaper.
But back to the stage volume, I found in my old band of 10 years that when we started dropping the stage volume and letting the pa do the heavy lifting, we started getting more fans and folks came closer to the band rather than moving to the back of the club or flat out leaving. Not only that benefit but you also save some hearing frequencies :-)

I play in a rock band with a LOUD drummer and I use a 13 watt amp. If THIS amp isn't loud enough, your stage volume is WAAAAYYYYY too loud!! If you need any more than this, you ought to be miking everything and running it all through the PA, then turning everything down on stage. Let your soundman mix the sound and your audience will appreciate you SO much more! The ONLY reason 50 and 100 watt amps exist today is from back in the late 60's and 70's when PA systems were not good enough to mike everything! No reason whatsoever to have that much power today if you aren't playing stadiums.

    • @VintageRadius

Gary Stackhouse unless you just want the clean headroom, but yes I agree that volume should not be the concern at that amount of power.

If you couldn't hear the Lonestar in the mix, talk to your sound guy. It's the PA not the amp volume. I like the demo however!

Nice to hear someone actually playing an amp with good country blues licks and a nice tone as opposed to all of the over-gained drop D wanking you hear on just about every demo vid anymore. Nothing against shredders or shredding either, but hey dial up some TONE and play some real CHORDS and lets hear what this stuff really sounds like!
Thanks man for keep in it real!

DUH... no amp in the world will ever be as loud as the house fronts. PERIOD. if you can't hear on a big stage, tell em to turn your moniter up... Its not rocket science.
