When I first wanted a Tele the first person my Dad said I needed to check out was Vince Gill. Fast forward 18 years getting to talk to Vince about his Tele is a real honor for me.
@colbyjack7404 AND… guess it goes without saying a monster guitar player! Saw vid of a very young Vince sharing a talk show, then playing with Chet Atkins, was very cool…
I love Vince Gill, I'm not even a country guy, I'm more of a rock metal guy, but I saw Vince play on some morning show years back, and he amazed me. I've been a fan since. He's an American treasure
I have always been a huge Vince Gill fan and had always thought he seemed like the most humble guy ever. So back a few months ago at the Amigo Guitar Show in Nashville I was talking to a dealer at his booth about this $45,000 vintage Tele he had and we were having a great conversation. When all of a sudden I feel somebody bump into me and I turn around to see what had happened and I look up and there is this huge dude standing right next to me and I go "HOLY CRAP!" and he laughs and goes "Yep... holy crap" and it was VINCE! I told him how I had always loved his music and he took a pic with me and chatted with me about this old 56 Strat that another dealer had brought there for him to try. He played it and then let me play it and told them he was going to pass on it but told me I should buy it and we just stood there and talked shop for probably 5 to 10 minutes and he's honestly just a nerd at heart like the rest of us. I told him if I bought that guitar my wife would divorce me and he said "you gotta learn to not tell your wife everything". LOL! He's SUCH a great dude! He said he even takes all his expensive vintage gear on the road with him and everything. He plays the stuff and doesn't just "collect" it. I'm sure your experience with him was the same as mine. What an absolutely great player and even greater person he truly is!
Wow what a great experience that must have been! I'll followed him for decades but never had the pleasure of meeting him. I've always pictured him as a humble guy you could talk guitars with all day.
My father ALWAYS, I Mean ALWAYS told me from the age of my teens when I got into guitar and music that If I ever got as good as Vince Gill I know how to play. He LOVED Vince’s playing and thought he was the best total package in his heart. Great watch Robert, thank you and Vince for taking the time to share with us 🙏🏻❤️ Brought back some sweet memories.
He is right up there with ALL of the greats. Vine Gill, Steve Wariner, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Brad Paisley, so many of the New and Old country music guys that are such BEAST guitar players. Loved this video.
fender needs to make a vince gill model guitar based on this one, Vince is my fav country guitar player hes so smooth, creative, melodic and technical at the same time
He did turn it down. They were working on a signature Strat at one point, but the project was abandoned and the prototype was destroyed in the Nashville flood.
Vince Gill simply the best, I love the way he explains the simple ( for him) way he breaks down any song / tune into only playing the right notes, never too many or too few just perfect every time, Vince you are the man
Vince turned down an invitation to join Dire Straits because he knew he was gonna have his break through. Now that’s some serious confidence. Been a fan forever. A true legend.
@16:47 - 19:23 is some solid advice on how to approach soloing ("Soloing is telling a story just as important as the song you're singing"). Like a few others have also related, I'm not much of a Country guy (more rock/metal), but I've always had the utmost respect for Vince Gill (singing, songwriting, and guitar pickin')... I'm pretty good at "keeping my powder dry," but I always lose it whenever I see him perform "Go Rest High On That Mountain" for the George Jones memorial at the Opry (in 2013).
Vince has always been a class act and never tried to be more than he was, just a simple down to earth guy, that happens to love music, and can sing ,play and write with the best of them!
Vince talked to me and my girlfriend at the Ryman like we were neighbors at the mailbox. Humble, kind, friendly. We were there for a self-guided tour. The box office said we had to go fast and be out by noon before the Vince Gill/Amy Grant Christmas show. As we went to the mic stand for our photo, Vince walked by carrying his Gruhn Versitar acoustic. He smiled and said hello to us. I asked what that unique-looking guitar was. He talked about the instrument and what a great friend George Gruhn has been to him over the years. It was my 60th birthday and it was a wonderful moment.
I don't think you will find another guy that is such a monster musician and guitarist that is that regular and that grounded. Speaks volumes of his character. In a business that is VERY narcissistic. At least not many of them.
He has guitars like most people have clothes . Have shitloads and use just a fraction. But he's a legend .. I bet he has a guitar he's only played once.
One of my all-time favorites of Vince is his solo on "How Great thou Art" that he played with Carrie Underwood. As awesome of a singer that Carrie is, he absolutely stole the show. She may have been the singer, but his "voice" (guitar solo) in that performance was epic. An absolute show stopper. It will bring tears to your eyes. Anyone that hasn't heard that performance needs to stop what they're doing, right now, and pull it up on RUclips. Powerful, is an understatement.
I haven't met Vince Gill and probably never will, but every time I hear him, whether his it's music or a conversation like this one, all I can think is What a sweetheart, what a great guy. Wonderful job here by the interviewer too.
Thanks Robert. Wow, what a treat, What a wonderful guy to hang out with. I could never get tired of just listening to him tell stories. He's a true legend, a true legend
Vince is amazing. Such a killer on guitar but so down to earth. I’m not a country fan but I’ve seen him live and he blew me away. Not to mention his voice! So glad you captured this for us.
I saw Vince live at a small venue in Branson Mo. second row right in front of him. Hell of a show! I liked him way back when he was in Pure Prarie League.
I’m a metal and rock player and I got inspired by Vince in the early 90’s when I first got into playing. His versatility of styles is very admirable. Don’t let his seeming modest fool you, he can rip on the fretboard.
"You already look too loud." That cracked me up. Thanks Robert and Vince for making this sit down happen. Vince is a really kind and gracious host and it's super cool that he did this with you Robert!
So inspiring…in the 80s and 90s…I was a hair band, metal head guy…but my musical tastes evolved. I love me some country never ever learned much about Vince’s songs but was always aware of his mastery of the instrument. This was an inspiring video…and what a great human…it was like two guitar nerds just hanging out…no big stardom or anything. I am a fan of his wife and I have now committed to mine to see them at the Ryman this year!
Thank you for getting together with the the ever incredible writer, guitarist, performer Vince ("Sweet Pea" Little Jimmy Dickens called him) Gill. Like many of you who were lucky enough to not only see Vince live in an auditorium but to see him in an off stage environment. My Wife and I in the mid 1980's got tickets to see Vince, George Jones and Conway Twitty in Tri Cities, Wa. We got a room near the venue the night before, checked in around 10pm, got settled then went to the motel bar for a drink. Much to our absolute surprise and joy guess who was just kick'n back with THIS guitar on his knee singing and playing for those few of us - about 20 - who were in the bar that night. No,, he wasn't being paid and NO,, he wasn't drinking alcohol,,, apparently he was staying at the same (mid price range - under $200 a night - which for the time was a middle of the road price) motel. He played and sang for about 45 or so minutes, finished his ice tea, signed some autographs, shook a lot of hands and returned to his room. My Wife and I as well as all those in that small bar (50 or 60 capacity) were fans even before that night thanks to MTV but what we witnessed the next nights concert made us forever fans of Vince, GEORGE and CONWAY. Before that concert we weren't too excited to see George and Conway,, Vince was who we were there to see and hear BUT after seeing and hearing them LIVE we learned something,, entertainers once seen live are so much different than in a video. We discovered why George Jones and Conway Twitty were so HUGE in their prime,, the concert was incredible.
I think I'm a couple years older. I just have all the respect in the world for Vince! I've heard him tell stories and they are just hilarious! When I was a kid I had some friends that had a family band. They were determined to make me a guitar player. Couple months I learned all my cowboy chords and I could change them pretty good. Then they lost the rhythm player in the band, they were determined all along to make me the rhythm player. That day I needed an amp, I was starting my first gig the next night! I had bought a Gibson ES325 (yes 25, google it). Being 1969, I saw an ad for a Fender amp on a bulletin board at the market. So we called, and went to buy it. It was a mint Fender Twin, w/JBL's owned by a steel player. I bought it for $200, it was like new!! I never plugged it in, and showed up the next night with it. The bar we were playing sat 50 people, 75 was a crowd. Due to lack of space here, picture this. I set my new amp on a chair, plugged everything in, turned it on standby. Got my guitar on, turned it up, turned the amp up to 8, then took it off standby and hit a G chord about as hard as I could!! If you know, your laughing loud right now. For non players, a '68 Twin is 80 crazy loud watts, and JBL speakers with huge magnets make it louder yet!! I think it about blew the roof off that little beer joint, scared the crap out of everyone, including me, and all my buddies that knew what was going to happen were rolling on the floor laughing!! That was 55 years ago, and still the loudest amp I ever heard!! If your still reading this thanks! I've really enjoyed playing bars in NY and Pa for the last 55 years!! God Bless and Peace --gary (aka BFG).
Terrific interview - Vince is so great! I happened to be at a church service that Vince and Amy also attended, right after the flood in 2020. Like a lot of Nashville guitarists, he lost a lot of instruments that were stored at Soundcheck (right next to the Cumberland river). I told him I was very sorry about that and asked if his white Telecaster was one the guitars destroyed by the flood. He replied, "No. It didn't get my baby".
Vince is definitely one of my major guitar heros . Awesome tone and chops . Vince is super humble friendly gent really appreciate his contributions to the music industry.
How could you not love Vince after watching him in this video. A true representation of southern hospitality and charm. He also owns the same Norman’s rare guitars t shirt that I own haha thanks Rob & Vince ! I really enjoyed watching this. ❤
Great video. This is more of an educational archive video that I think many folks will appreciate being able to watch years and years from now. Thanks for doing this and putting it out into the world.
Merle & Vince has always been at the top of the mountain for me. I dont know that I could ever choose or want to but Vince’s harmony singing & his play has always floored me as a musician.
Vince Gill is just WOW!! I love everything he does. He is a true musician and has just gotten better over time. Thank you Robert for this great video :D
Vince is truly a hero to me, a huge inspiration as a player. but mostly as a human being. Humble and so down to earth being the huge artist he is, not to mention that he is as funny as they come. I absolutely adore Vince Gill, the man from Nashville, Truly a legfend.
I don't remember what TV show it was, but a good many years ago I heard Vince doing a song and then kick out some amazing guitar licks. As smooth and effortless as Mark Knopfler, but in his own distinctive style. I knew him by the occasional country song befor but he got instant respect as a solid soloing guitarist right then. Very nice interview. He seemed as gracious and genuine as many others have opined. Imagine getting Vince and another big time guitar nerd like Joe Bonamassa together for a chat, would probably go on for days.
What a guest to have, Robert. Hope you keep this series going! I have absolutely loved Vince Gill's music for years. What a picker. Just amazing. I have to say though, in spite of all the fantastic music he's done, my favorite will forever be It's Hard To Kiss The Lips At Night. Always brings a huge smile. 😎
Huge fan since I discovered his music in the early 90's. When he performed in my hometown, man that was one of the musical highlights of my life. Amazing!
Had to drop a comment on this one. I discovered Vince at the 2004 Crossroads in Dallas, I was really floored by this guys playing, it's not fair, he already sings like a bird but he's a real axe slinger, real deal virtuoso. I read up on him after that and he was talking in an article about being a kid playing rock n roll guitar and learning all the parts to Ramble On on Zeppelin II. I was sold and have followed him ever since, he's the real deal and a top notch person to boot. I'll always be a fan, thanks for this Robert, keep it up with the Guitar Stories, a great series!
Thank you very much. Here we have a man who plays MUSIC with his guitar. Loved the interview. It would have been nice to know how he tunes his tele; is he using any sweetened tunings etc.
Truly a Special segment, ROBERT! Vince Gill is such a humble man and Powerhouse Guitarist, songwriter and Singer/Artist. He is truly, truly underrated. Just love him!⭐️❤️⭐️ ROBERT, know the move from Ohio to Nashville was tough, but you are now where you and your Family, belong.⭐️⭐️🙏⭐️⭐️
I agree. His guitar playing is unbelievable. But like he said songs 1st. But when he does play even if it is just alittle, you can see and hear he can play more than what he's doing. He just plays for the song. Love to hear a instrumental album.
I had the pleasure to meet Vince at the Grand Ole Opry maybe 5 years ago when we were shooting in Nashville. We meet again about 2 months for a day, went to the Ryman, took a tour around Nashville, lunch at the diner and upstair at George's Guitar, Vince was gracious and so town to earth.
Music runs deep in my family who played, and sang at and around Renfro Valley Kentucky. How can we not know the name Vince Gill! One of the most appealing things about Vince is that he is down to earth, and grateful for his success. He seems like a pretty nice guy, and likes to laugh. Not only is he an amazing lyricist, immediately recognizable vocalist, talented and developed player, but he also admits to not painting himself into one particular category of music - the sign of a true music fan. So, all the best to him on his ongoing success whether flying solo, with the Eagles, or something else. Nice interview Robert, and don't be afraid to ask for a few pictures with some of your musical heroes and their axes. Most of them will surely agree. They have heroes too! It would have been neat to have an outro of you on video playing that famous Tele. Make full use of those opportunities. Rock on brother!
Started listening to Vince Gill when he was with Rosanne Cash. It blew my mind! His style and technique is my favorite ever! Just gets better all the time. Love that old Tele!!! It's ALL good!!! Forever. PS Been to 7 Vince Gill live shows. And one of those with The Eagles! 😊
I was thinking of selling my '56 blonde tele so I could make another album, but after watching this I'm going to keep it. Love this man... Big inspiration... Thanks Vince!
Great interview with an amazing talent Vince Gill! I saw him at Country Thunder in Wisconsin back in the early 90’s. There was a rain storm before his show so he said his entire band couldn’t play due to safety reasons and electrocution. He did an unplugged version of his show which was amazing! Pure music, vocals and talent. Thank you Robert and Vince for making this interview happen ✌️
Vince saying he needs to practice 🤣 I've watched him from the front row and I've watched him from the back sounds great every time! Can't wait to see him again when he solo tours. Twice with the eagles but those tickets are a little more cashy. Let's start a petition for more solo Vince tours! Oh and bring Wendy Moten and Corrina along too 😉
Back in 1979 my wife and I took out first trip and went to Orlando (Disney).. went downtown to a place called Rosie o’Grady’s and the headliner was Terry Gibbons, a blind piano player. Vince was the guitarist in her band and was AMAZING. Something we never forget and see Vince almost everytime he is in the northeast for the last 45 years !
No bad comments for Vince, nice change, As a younger lad I was into Pure Prairie League, when he started doing solo work, I was on board, thanks Robert for a great channel and keep rocking the Revv Rik
Great artist with great stage presence. I’m not a country-first guy. Watched him recently on an older Crossroads Show, and he did an amazing job. First class musician.
Ever since I first saw his collection on YT in that room that has been the mark of excellence. To have a beautiful room just like that, surrounding by guitars 😍 Peaceful paradise.
Man, what a legend. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live on his own tour and playing for the eagles. Thank you both for making and sharing this. He mentioned Brad Paisley, and that’s another guy I’d love to see on this series talking about his career and his guitars.
Love to see his guitar collection. Looks amazing .Loved when Vince along with Darryl Hall, Amy Grant, Joe Walsh and other musicians played at his home. Very relaxed, he was wearing shorts, just complete comfort. They were singing naming songs and just playing, singing harmonies. Someone was going to play acoustic and asked if Vince had a specific model and he just went and grabbed one from the wall and the music continued.
There is a Honey colored Gibson behind Vince up on the shelf over his left shoulder, that is a stunningly beautiful guitar. Thank you for sharing this video.
When I think about a lot of notes and overplay, it’s Billy Strings, Tommy Emmanuel, and their ilk. Eric Clapton is the prime example of playing enough notes but still filling the space. Vince figured this out as well. He’s great!
Fantastic interview Robert! Kudos to Uncle Larry for hooking you up too. It's about time someone did a long form interview with Vince, he's a bit under the radar as a guitarist, but he is a stone cold killer player!
Quite a few years back Vince was to appear at the Walworth County fair here in Wisconsin. We got there early. No admission and you could put a lawn chair on the track in front of the stage. Vince came out in running shorts and a T-shirt to do a sound check and ended up entertaining us for about 45 minutes. Awesome! Later we came back to our seats and enjoyed several hours of great music. Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on you tube.
A terrific musician, writer, and human. Vince’s approach on making music together as a democracy in process is the perfect metaphor for where America needs to reorient entirely. His musical aims are not about perfection, but creating something soulful that makes honest sense. All the separate parts are integral to serving the song.
I have loved Vince Gill ever since first time I heard him .I'm 82 and he's a favorite in our family. I oldest daughter, Robyn loved him.she taught herself to play in her 50's .I'm so proud of her, she passed away At Thanksgiving time 2023 ,terrible freak gun accident.. she loved her guitars and her two dogs..she didn't have grand children. She was only 62...miss her so
Sir, I am so sorry for your loss. I’m teaching myself to play in my 50s. Thank you for sharing your story. Again, my condolences to you and your family.
I got to hang out with Vince on his first tour on MCA records in CA. He was saying that he wasn't big on changing electric guitar strings frequently. He also was wearing the same cowboy boots he had since high school days. A very 'old school ' sensibility and a very gracious man, very appreciative of his public.
When I first wanted a Tele the first person my Dad said I needed to check out was Vince Gill. Fast forward 18 years getting to talk to Vince about his Tele is a real honor for me.

Vince is probably thinking when is this overnight
First time I really saw Vince he was cutting heads against Chet Atkins and he was so damn amazing. He still got showed up by Chet though!
Back in the day, Vince played with Pure Pierre League
Isn’t it great when somebody just breaks through the normal noise and makes you feel guitar in such a special way. 🎉
Well he’s touring with the Eagles so he’s playing rock currently and you can see him live. We went in New Orleans what a great show!

Got to say Hi to him the Bay Hill golf tournament many years ago. He was as nice as could be.
Love Vince Gill. Saw him with the Eagles twice and both his voice and guitar playing moved me to tears, it was so beautiful
Only a few players could have been acceptable for the Eagles to complement their music . Vince Gill filled that gap so well for the Eagles.
Vince is a national treasure. One of those guys that you’d just love to hang out with

Awesome!!! As a metal and hardcore punk guy Vince is still up there as one of my favorite guitarists. Phenomenal player and great dude! Awesome video
"I like creative people and letting them shine" says a ton about Vince and his world. So involved yet knowing when to let it fly. A true gentleman.
Absolutely!

Yes, sage advice from a master. To paraphrase of an old quote, "Silence is the canvas on which musicians paint". IE; do more with less.

Great story! What was the band called if i may ask?
Terrific interview - Vince is so great! I happened to be at a church service that Vince and Amy also attended, right after the flood in 2020. Like a lot of Nashville guitarists, he lost a lot of instruments that were stored at Soundcheck (right next to the Cumberland river). I told him I was very sorry about that and asked if his white Telecaster was one the guitars destroyed by the flood. He replied, "No. It didn't get my baby".
I'm 61 and rediscovering Vince! Incredible musician and person! I wishing the best years to come! Thanks Robert, you did it again!
We ❤ Vincent Musicality, he plays so effortlessly. I live seeing him live. Great interview Robert!!!!
Vince is the real deal. The pros pro, the song writer's song writer, the player's player. Not even talking about his singing, goes without saying.
What a humble person he is. Hell of a picker too! Cool episode.
Awesome video @RobertBakerGuitar! Vince is a gem. Such a legend yet such a humble genuine dude. World needs more like him!
What a great, humble guy and a first-rate musician. Awell-deserved legend.
Vince Gill is a legend. His play style is incredible. Been diggin his finger picking for over 40 years
Vince is truly a hero to me, a huge inspiration as a player. but mostly as a human being. Humble and so down to earth being the huge artist he is, not to mention that he is as funny as they come. I absolutely adore Vince Gill, the man from Nashville, Truly a legfend.
Vince gill is one hell of a guitar player and singer
Vince is to guitars what Jay Leno is to machinery. They are both the most sincere and humble people IMO
A true gentleman, stay well Vince!
Yes, may God watch over his health and travels.
It’s awesome to see everyone coming around to this channel now. Always great videos. Keep up the great work Robert.
Living legend. One of the best musicians ever. As someone else said, he's a national treasure. Great video.
Amazing!
This is my tele, there are many others like it but this one is my favorite
You wouldn't by chance have a connection to the Corps, would you?
You and Santana have the best guitar collections. Vince you are a idol to me!
Really sweet interview! Vince is a treasure. So glad we’re alive at the same time.
Just love him!⭐️❤️⭐️
ROBERT, know the move from Ohio to Nashville was tough, but you are now where you and your Family, belong.⭐️⭐️🙏⭐️⭐️
I just adore Vince!! And just a side note...that kitty cat sleeping on the couch, is beautiful!!
absolutely incredible interview. such a humble, talented human. love hearing his approach to songwriting etc and the tone on that thing is FIRE
Great interview. Vince is a legend.
Wow! If you're not familiar with Vince Gill????!!!!!
He's a legend! That '53 isn't bad either.
The Cat just hanging out…..awesome
Nice to see you sitting down with Vince. Good natured conversation and laughs. Thanks!
Great interview- Vince is the best.
What a down to earth " regular " guy!! Just like talkin' to the guy down the street. Love him.
It always rains at country thunder lol
Vince Gill is the real deal ! Thank you Robert.
No bad comments for Vince, nice change, As a younger lad I was into Pure Prairie League, when he started doing solo work, I was on board, thanks Robert for a great channel and keep rocking the Revv
Rik
excellent interview Robert, thanks. Vince is a down home guy and also passes on useful, insightful info
Along with everything else said about Vince, I love the kitty just hanging out... Good job, Robert!
Great artist with great stage presence. I’m not a country-first guy. Watched him recently on an older Crossroads Show, and he did an amazing job. First class musician.
OMG....KITTY LAYING RIGHT BESIDE DAD......THAT IS SO INCREDIBLE..........SHOWS HIS HEART AND SOUL......VINCE.........YOU ARE SO INCREDIBLE.......
Ever since I first saw his collection on YT in that room that has been the mark of excellence.
To have a beautiful room just like that, surrounding by guitars 😍
Peaceful paradise.
Love Vince Gill. He is so down to Earth. Thanks and God bless. Keep on keeping on.
This is one of the best ever videos. Wow!
Man, what a legend. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live on his own tour and playing for the eagles. Thank you both for making and sharing this.
He mentioned Brad Paisley, and that’s another guy I’d love to see on this series talking about his career and his guitars.
Hope to have him on soon :)
I saw the Eagles recently and has the pleasure of sitting right in front of Vince - amazing player - he stood out among the Eagles. Impactful.
If Vince keeps at it he’s gonna get that guitar thing someday.
😂❤❤❤
Love to see his guitar collection. Looks amazing .Loved when Vince along with Darryl Hall, Amy Grant, Joe Walsh and other musicians played at his home. Very relaxed, he was wearing shorts, just complete comfort. They were singing naming songs and just playing, singing harmonies. Someone was going to play acoustic and asked if Vince had a specific model and he just went and grabbed one from the wall and the music continued.
I came late to Vince, really late. Nothing but respect and affection for this great artist. Great hang too.
Seems like one of the nicest guys in music. Such a talented writer, singer, and player. Wish I had half his natural talent at anything.
There is a Honey colored Gibson behind Vince up on the shelf over his left shoulder, that is a stunningly beautiful guitar. Thank you for sharing this video.
Vince is great but wow, that cat is beautiful!
When I think about a lot of notes and overplay, it’s Billy Strings, Tommy Emmanuel, and their ilk. Eric Clapton is the prime example of playing enough notes but still filling the space. Vince figured this out as well. He’s great!
I was at a concert in SF with Dimeola, Paco DeLucia, and Mahavishnu. Hours of notes played so fast that music never entered the conversation.
Love VG and am so impressed with how generous he is with his time.
Again, my condolences to you and your family.
thanks so much for this video. Great stories, so glad to be able to peek in on this cool interview.
I got to hang out with Vince on his first tour on MCA records in CA. He was saying that he wasn't big on changing electric guitar strings frequently. He also was wearing the same cowboy boots he had since high school days. A very 'old school ' sensibility and a very gracious man, very appreciative of his public.
Amazing musician and seems like an even more amazing person. His playing is incredible. The voice to go along with it....beyond anything. Dang!!!!
