    I'd also make a point to use Jack Kirby's artwork as the basis for the entire production design. Several things irritated me about the Tim Story films, but maybe the worst was that the production was uninspired and boring-looking. Kirby created pages and pages worth of sci-fi vistas, machinery, character and costume designs, etc. That stuff needs to go up on a wall as concept art, and get used for the whole look of the film.
    Now we're seeing Marvel try a bit of this sort of thing on stuff like the upcoming Thor movie, but any adaptation of Fantastic Four should make full use of Kirby. The man was a genius, and FF was arguably the best thing he ever did.

      Yeah that was the good thing about the Doctor Strange movie. I think they picked up on the fact that Strange himself doesn't have that much of a character story, but the real appeal would be the rock album visuals. So they ran with it and it works. It's still too bad he doesn't have quite the character story I would like, but it's fine.

      Kirby is King, but I think John Byrne took the FF to a new level. His multi-episode arcs hold up. Imagine the Frankie Raye/Galactus storyline on the big screen with the rest of the MCU. Also, did anyone ever read the 1995 Chris Columbus FF screenplay? At least on the page, it seemed very faithful to the comics.

    • @halfmadjesus
      @halfmadjesus 7 лет назад +18

      I'd pull from John Byrne too -- personally, his classic run was the first time I read FF on a regular basis. But even Byrne would say he was doing his best attempt at aping Kirby (and Stan Lee). More so than a lot of other comic book characters, Kirby and Lee pretty much ARE the Fantastic Four. Their establishing 100+ issue run was definitive, and although a (very) few other creators have managed to add something to that over the years, all of them were trying to measure up, and pay homage to it.

      Here's an idea,make a solo Doctor Doom movie first. Tell his origin. Without the Fantastic Four in it. Tell how he went from the son of a gypsy. To the ruler of Latveria. Establish him as a badass then bring him in for maybe the second or third fantastic for movie if they get the first one right. Use someone like Annihilus for the first FF movie. Maybe the mole man for the second movie. Tie it all together in the third movie With doom having put everything in motion in some grand plan he has.

      @@ronniehesson1302 I would also personally be down for a Disney+ original series centred around Doctor Doom's origins. In fact, that'd arguably be better, since that'll give us at least 4 to 8 hours' worth of Victor's development into Doctor Doom, as well as plenty of Latverian world-building (depending on the length and quantity of each episode).

      Reed Richards should have been at the center of the time-plan of Avengers: End Game. As I watched, it was just out of place for Tony and Bruce to do the groundwork - not their specialty. EMAN67 (Movies,politics,commentary) Being paid posthumously isn't enough. As it wasn't during their actual life times did they ever receive the funds and royalties artists in the comic book industry receive today by comparisons. Kirby's estate, along with Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster (creators of Superman) would have to be paid royalties in back payments (with or without "inflation" provided really depends?) currently given the results of the court cases which as seen some justice being provided for the families as of late!

      P.S. Actual take the time to properly listen to Mark Evanier and others on Jack Kirby past the 9 or 10 minute mark on this particular Kirby documentary o.k. as it'll inform you and plenty more, on how frustrating it was for Kirby working in an art field like comic books. Something he truly loved while its system provided the bulk of money for the industry! And not its artist and writers in the longterm.
      Unless like Stan Lee you invested in the company you worked for or had a foot up because your uncle worked at Timely Comics etc? (before it became Marvel Comics) and got you work there and so on.

He has a very distinctive perspective, personality, and voice, and he is naturally funny when called for.

    I think you hit on something with Doom. He's not one villain like Joker, he could be on the scale they tried to make Loki in the Avengers and even bigger. Serious question: what are matte paintings used for in this era of CGI?

    • @JoshEvans13
      @JoshEvans13 7 лет назад +64

      Nearly every major film released still uses them. It's still the most cost effective and convincing way of creating environments. The artform has changed over the decades though, now we paint digitally and project that painting on to cg geometry in order to give the illusion of things like parallax and perspective...it's quite a bit different from the classic technique of oil on glass. To be honest though, I don't know a SINGLE digital artist who doesn't wish we did everything practically but sadly our hands are tied.

    • @Caseytify
      @Caseytify 7 лет назад +14

      Agreed. The basic thesis of this clip is correct; it's not that hard to make a good FF movie. The FF has been stuck with lousy stories.
      I especially agree that Doom has been horribly mis-handled. He's not only as smart as Reed Richards, but he's as good with mech as Tony Stark. Given his strength with magic (or did they retcon that?) he's really Richards/Stark/Strange. Talk about a power house!
      A good examination of Doom's personality as described by Patrick is in the Superman/Spiderman team-up. His constant dismissive addressing Supes as "alien," along with his questions as to what Superman can honestly do for humanity is illuminating. Doom thinks Kal-El is wasting everyone's time by not ruling the world, and dismisses the "alien" as an obstacle to his own plans. Get out of the way and let someone qualified do the job as it were.

    Here's my take:
    First movie: Make a whole movie on Doom (based on the "Books of Doom" series) and how he has to take down the dictator of Latveria that killed his family.
    Second movie: All about the FF (who already have their powers) and have to take down Skrulls "Secret Invasion" style (it would be obviously scaled down from the original storyline, but the scenario fits the 60's golden age sci-fi era). Doom could make an appearance to begrudgingly help the FF, if only to protect himself and Latveria.
    Third movie: This is the movie where they build up FF vs Doom. You already have two movies that focused on building all the main characters, and now we see them fighting over something (clash of ideology, macguffin, whatever).
    All movies: Would take place in the 60's; would have a deconstruction-reconstruction on the theme of family
    From a marketing standpoint, doing the Doom standalone movie first would be good just to give an olive branch to audiences who were underwhelmed by the villain's previous incarnations (assuming the film is good of course).

    • @TheGeorgeD13
      @TheGeorgeD13 7 лет назад +12

      That sounds awesome, actually. But if there was ONE THING that the films did that I LOVE... it's that they made Victor part of the mission that got them their powers. It makes a powerful connection between Doom and the FF.
      But I also love the idea you have there as well.

    • @GrimeKnight
      @GrimeKnight 7 лет назад +15

      True, they did that with Iron Man and Ant Man! Sadly the films don't capitalize on how much Doom and the FF are opposites of each other. Doom is the introvert who can get things done by himself; the FF get things done as a family. Doom hides his face while the FF don't don masks. Doom uses science to conquer while the FF use it to better humanity.
      I think even individual parallels can be drawn among the members of the group. Both Doom and Grimm have to deal with the physical scarring they've both been dealt with. Doom was once more playful and cocky like Johnny. He had a love like Sue that was also lost to him. And of course, Richard is his intellectual equal that he despises.
      It's all well and good until the executives demand that you change it though :(

      I''ve always thought that a way you could maintain the original FF origin (i.e. Cold-War era rocket trip) would be to have them stuck in the Negative Zone for 50 years and emerge in the present day. They would put a twist on the "fish out of water" crap that would typically go in a script of that kind by having Reed's 50 year old tech be more advanced than present day and he just laugh's and uses it like it's nothing. Annihilius could follow them out of the Negative zone and they could save Doom for later.

And they are referred to as Marvel's First Family, tying in the history lesson and the half of the main point. They are a family of explorers. Why have none of the movies embraced that? So I totally agree with you and I think all of your points are good. Great video!

    Maybe, similar to Doctor Strange, Victor is a friend of the Fantastic Four, especially Reed. He helps them throughout the movie. He could even be considered an honorary member of the team, despite having no superpowers. But in the final battle, when Victor is assisting them, Reed makes a tough decision which results in Victor being completely scarred and traumatised. It would add a nice spin to the "final battle" trope, because everything isn't fully resolved in the end, and despite saving the world, the Fantastic Four still ultimately fail by creating Doctor Doom. It would be interesting to see his transition from hero to villain this way as his fallout would be more emotional.

    Fantastic Four=Marvel's Doctor Who (but with a family). I can totally see it.
    Interesting perspective, adding Guardians of the Galaxy in there as a comparable part of it. I think one thing that also appealed to them was the 'underdog loser' aspect that the movie used. Throw in the colorful elements that you mentioned and it seemed to work.
    Going back to the Doctor Who hook, having them already be seasoned adventurers/explorers when the movie starts sounds fun. Don't make it entirely about punchy punchy fighty fighty (which will happen of course because superheroes, but still). I like the idea of a mysterious occurrence showing up and a lot of the movie being about them finding out what's going on.

The personalities worked so well in the 60's and it would be neat to see the Lee/Kirby concept start in a time when it was created and how the characters would deal with the future.

    This video is exactly why i never went to see these Fantastic Four (in name only) movies at the box office in the last 14 years since 2004. Because as somebody who actually read the FF comics. The films and their trailers never grabbed me that these FF films were true adaptations of what i read in the comics while growing up or saw in the animated shows on TV etc. Good video, i disagree on alot of ideas though especially in regards to Dr Doom you don't need to do multiple films to get him right although he does require more backstory that say a; Magneto for the X-Men, or Red Skull or Loki for the MCU films etc. But you'll get a thumbs up from me because as FF fans we can all relate to the problems Hollywood's missing in not making a proper adaptation work with the Fantastic Four films overall!

Fantastic Four won't sell at all, and the only ones reaping the profit is FOX. That's why Marvel won't do it. They're waiting for FOX to sell the entire rights back or give it back. That's the better deal (better than producing free movies for FOX).

      OR Fox can just make a great Fantastic Four movies. With Deadpool and Logan, things are looking up again for Fox and I think they may have learned the important key to those films' success: being true to the soul of the comics and its characters.
      I desperately do not want any of the Fox Marvel Properties to go to Marvel Studios. Less competition, meaning a lesser product in the end and also... this is just me, the individual heroes feel less special when in a cinematic universe. Also, I've always been quite disgusted with the entire CONCEPT of a cinematic universe as of late due to Marvel Studios and DC failing to make MOVIES. They make movies that build up to another movie that builds up another movie. Superhero movies seem to have no beginning, middle, and end anymore like they did before 2012 and stand on their own as FILMS.

    • @showmeyourmoves8551
      @showmeyourmoves8551 7 лет назад +10

  • @CYTVim
    @CYTVim 7 лет назад +6

    I don't think origin is key to whether movie is good or not, but I agree people may be bored of it.
    I do think getting the characters right is top priority. Chris Evans was amazing in that role despite those movies not being good. His character and the human torch powers visually were awesome. And silver surfer looked awesome. He could have his own movie.
    I think you need a director and producers that are artists. I think some marvel movies are works of art - Dr Strange, Guardians of Galaxy. Fantastic Four needs a great director and artist at the helm. I doubt they will line up a strong enough creative team to pull it off.
    I think the moments that shined in all three movies were when they got the powers right and portrayed them well on screen. Those powers are really a big part of FF. Make them cool, make them exciting, write scenes to show them off.
    Strong stories and villains are necessary but get the characters and powers right first and foremost.

    Thank you so much for making this video. It’s taken me a while to build up the courage to watch it-I have a deep love for the FF and it often hurts to see clips and images from any of the movies that have gotten them so wrong. It especially stings because I’ve written several different versions of an MCU FF movie in my head, and a bit on paper, and I can say without bragging that making a good FF movie is more than possible-if you comb through all the MCU movies, Marvel has already nailed all the pieces they’d need to make one:
    1. the joy and beauty of science and learning (Iron Man, Ant-Man, Spider-Man, etc.)
    2. the weird, dysfunctional family that bickers and struggles to get along but when shit goes down they’ve got each other’s backs, no matter what (the Guardians, the Avengers, Ant-Man and Wasp, Thor and Loki)
    3. the wondrous, otherworldly settings (the Quantum Realm, Vormir, Ego’s planet, the Mirror Dimension, etc.)
    4. the meaningful character arcs and development (Rocket, Gamora, Thor, Steve, Tony)
    5. the ability to take both beloved and little-known villains from the comics and portray them as complex, compelling, credible threats (Loki, Thanos, Zemo, Killmonger, Vulture), or at least as strange, memorable opponents (Hela, Ego, Mysterio, Ghost, etc.)
    6. the willingness to embrace weird, lesser known elements from the comics (literally everything from Guardians, Doctor Strange, Ragnarok, Shang-Chi, WandaVision, and so many others in the later phases).
    See? Marvel’s done all the homework; they’ve got the chops to make a FF and make it well. Their track record is pretty freaking good, so despite being wronged so many times before, I’m willing to get my hopes up once again for a good Fantastic Four film.

    While I agree that a film can skip the origin story, I soundly disagree with the idea that their origin story is unimportant. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video. The Fantastic Four have been my favorite heroes since I was tiny, and I've had to sit through each attempt to adapt their comics, watching my beloved team and their fascinating dynamics and storylines get whittled down to nothing and shoved into poor excuses for films. Despite this, I still believe that they can make a good film (often citing The Incredibles as proof, just as you did). Now, as an adult, I've decided that maybe the only way to get a good film/series/or anything else might be to write it myself, so that's what I think I'm going to do. So from a diehard fan: thank you for creating this video and trying to imbue the same faith I have in the FF into others, especially after so many films that could've torn down your hope in an eventual good one. Thank you so much.

      G B Nope. If there’s anything the MCU take us, it’s that slow & steady wins the race. Infinity War was the culmination of 10 years worth of build up, Thanos had been gradually introduced as a villain to fear for 6 years from 2012 - 2018. Acting quick & rushing Dr Doom as a villain to be introduced & defeated in just one or two films will just make him look weak like the 2005 & 2015 ones did.
      It’s difficult as there’s so many great characters like The Skrulls, Dr Doom, Kingpin, Norman Osborn, Galactus, etc that fans would love to see introduced to the MCU but in reality seeing as the MCU will not last forever and will inevitably one day come to an end, we’re likely to only see one or two if we’re lucky of the names we mentioned.
      But it’s better for us to see only a few key characters and story arcs from the comics if they’re covered well, in depth & adapted beautifully, rather than have movies shovelled out with many villains and characters crammed in with no depth behind it so we end up with an overstuffed and flawed end product like Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
      I’m honestly not certain we’ll ever see Dr Doom in the MCU or even the Fantastic 4. Of course I’m hopeful, but if it’s a choice of them not showing the characters as they don’t feel it can be done faithful to the comics, or just quickly rushing it out with the only intention to ensure they make it to the MCU, id take the former option.
      I don’t want them to quickly introduce Dr Doom. If he comes he comes, if not the MCU will still go on enjoyable without him in it.

    I don't want any new F4 movie from Fox ever again. They had three tries and fucked it up every single time. Badly. Just give the rights back to Marvel or at the very least make a deal with them similar to Sony and Spider-Man. Say whatever you want about the "Marvel formula", but the mood and tone perfectly fits the F4. And the biggest advantage for the MCU wouldn't even be the inclusion of the main characters, but rather that of the villains that come with the property: Dr. Doom, Galactus and Silver Surfer could be awesomeness overload if finally done right on the big screen! Incidentally, the MCU could really use some quality bad guys that last for more than one movie after so many bland and forgettable ones (maybe with Loki as the sole exception).

      I've always been disappointed with the Spider-Man movies. Not nearly as much as the FF, obviously; but they constantly discard the most compelling aspects of the character. For ex, Parker's motivations for becoming a crime-fighter: in the first years it was all out of a guilt trip, his uncle having been killed due to his own negligence. He wasn't driven by morality. He resented the world for the abuse he got in his earlier years, and he carried that chip on his shoulder even when he was doing the right thing. And then, of course, there were cops. He was always in trouble with the law, thanks to J. Jonah Jameson's negative PR on SM. Shades of the anti-hero, which was a staple at Marvel. All that's milked down or eliminated from the movies.

    I’m truly hoping that Black Panther 2 introduces Reed Richards as a genius that benefited from the Stark endowment at MIT which earned him the money to buy Avengers Tower (along with proficient stock trading.
    (Oh there’s more to my story) In hopes of tying Reed to as many storylines in Phase 3 & 4, I remember that he is from California and would need time to earn his degrees before he would even meet Ben Grimm, Sue Storm or Victor Von Doom. Marvel could easily make him a student at MIT the time that Tony granted all of their projects in Civil War. They could also make Reed a part of The Wakanda Science project at the end of Black Panther 1. Namor is obviously going to be a part of Black Panther 2 based in the scenes early in in End Game. Marvel will need to retcon Reed’s proximity to certain events that could tie into their involvement in Phase 4 & 5. He had an inheritance, but how is he going to buy Avengers Tower in The MCU? The richest people up to this point were Tony Stark & T’Challa. Reed will need to be adept to Economics and The Stock Market as well. Maybe even profiting off the snap at the same time entering space during The Snap which would have an even greater adverse effect than Cosmic Rays alone. Because the origin story movie for FF will probably not be the way they go, they will need to tie all of these things together throughout a few movies before their own.

    I have so much love for this video. It's weird how all the preexisting F.F. movies make it look especially hard to do, somehow (I know this was covered, but it frustrates me enough that I'm giving myself the catharsis of repeating it.)
    Also, I love the Doom praise. I don't often hear him summarized well, apart from here. (I also happen to think that, even without Victor, the F.F. have the greatest rogue's gallery since Batman, but all underused (looking at you, the Red Ghost and the Mole Man), for some reason.
    In summary: Thanks, Pat.

      (Disclaimer: This is very long!)
      Here is how to make a good Fantastic 4 movie
      Make a trilogy and have Dr. Doom’s arc be over the 3 movies. The FF dont fight him until the third movie (kinda like Thanos but not really)
      In the first movie, the FF are really famous and have trips to and from earth like everyday. There is the tourist scene like Patrick talked about. Then one of the tourists asks their tour guide (Kirby) where the FF are and can they see them. Kirby then responds and sees a ship fly away from the top level of the Baxter building, “Thats them, they just left, they will be back in an hour, they are headed to Jupiter.”
      (Sorry for all of the spelling mistakes, get used to it...)
      The world is very “Meet the Robbinsons” cheesy futuristicy and colorful. Dr. Doom does not know Reed Richards yet and is a young adult in his home country who is brilliant. He wants to be an explorer and an engineer just like Reed.
      The movies take place over a couple of years and Doom and Reed get older and soon, the FF are slowly getting more grim and dark and kind of becoming less and less famous after a big fight with the villian from the first movie and there were many deaths of innocent people. And Doom is slowly rising to power and still wants to meet Reed. The whole arc in all three of these movies is that the FF are failing on all levels and hitting rock bottom and becoming darker versions of themselves. As for Doom, he is rising to power and fame and is still good until the last 20 min of the second movie where Doom meets the Reed and is just mocked and just treated horribly by the whole FF. The thing that will defeat the C list villian for the second movie explodes and injures Doom but not the FF. The FF just leave and dont help him. The FF are now starting to be painted as villians of the story. Doom goes back to Europe and has a mental break down and starts building what will later be the first doom bot and his costume. He then declares war on the FF.
      3rd movie (4 years later)and the FF are being sued for property damage for another huge villian battle with like the Super Skrull or smoething that you hear about on the news and is metioned throughout the movie. You start to see America loose their minds over the fact that amyonr could be a skrull. The Himan Torch is a drunk, the Invisible Woman wants to separate for many different reasons, Ben is upset that his fiance was killed in one of their big battles and Reed is just ingnoring all of them and is always at this crashed Skrull ship doing research and fasinated by the skrull technology. They are a disfunctional family. Doom pretty much pitties America at this point and is pretty much ruling his home country after he preached some poetic stuff and how he is a god amongst men and should rule, then they threw over the goverment and now worship Doom. He wants to fix America. His first thing he does as king or whatever is invite some Skrulls into his country and basicly shows America how its done. Doom gets some followers in America and rises to fame there as well. The Skrulls are baisicly immigrants at this point and these movies would be really topical in todays world of you think about all of the paralells it has to our world. Doom invites Skrulls hiding in America to come to his country. Its Christmas Eve and the FF are having a really awkward time. Because Jonny is so drunk, he just roasts everyone in the room (no pun intended) and just tells it to them straight, thay they need to start working togeter and just need to grow up. Ben quits crying because of his fiance and they all just have a self reflecting moment and some really amazing dialouge about how they are a family and they live each other. They decide that with the new year that they will try to fix everything in their past and face all of their demons.
      New year, Ben goes to his fiance’s family’s house and spends the day with them, Jonny throws away all of his drugs and alchohol and Susan and Reed spend the day together trying to rekindle their love. The FF go to homlees shelters for people who’s homes were destroyed by the FF and donate money and do all kinds of great stuff. Then, the FF all fly to Doom’s country to aplogize and make amends. Doom gives them a second chance and is actually kind of nice to them. The Skrulls find out that they are there and attack the FF and Doom tells them to stop and is really just trying to make peace. The FF wipes out every last Skrull (on earth) and Doom is pissed. Before the FF came, Doom had different plans to take each one of them out if it came to it and he ends up using them. He has a doom bot send out a sonic wave that separates the rocks that make up Ben and tares Ben’s arms off. Then they all fight. Come with your own ending, I’m tired of typing. I might come back and write and ending to how I think it should end. And it should be directed by David Fincher!

    What Fox needs to do is just give the ole FF back to Marvel. Here's what I'd suggest if they did: Make a FF Netflix original set in the 1960s where basically these 4 heroes rise in the wake of the absence of Captain America in time for the Atomic Age. But here's the twist: They are a legend and interest to the modern superheroes because they mysteriously disappeared when they encountered a foe around 1968. Next thing you know, The Fantastic Four show up in modern times because surprise, time travel thanks to Kang the Conqueror (Who is actually a possible future Doom and the Fantastic Four first encountered him under the guise of Rama Tut). I can imagine old newspapers, photos, newsreels, JFK-assassination style government clips of the FF fighting monsters and villains to give context without too much forced exposition and the FF slowly adapt to the new world and fight new villains alongside the modern heroes while we the audience get flashbacks to there 1960s hero days in a Kirby ala mode style. (Also, we could see how SHIELD was at the time and maybe get a Jim Steranko-style SHIELD working alongside the Fantastic Four; Maybe Marvel could have some it's characters star in this 1960s time span like the original Hank Pym Antman, the original Human Torch, Sub-Mariner, the Inhumans, and maybe a grandfather of the Black Panther that was the Black Panther at the time.)

    I absolutely agree with you! Bigger with the WOW factor. Building up potential story arcs, Doc Doom does need a backstory while the FF establish themselves. How Reed should realize who Doom is with a thorough flashback of the two of them. No fast track, but more like references in their interactions with tidbits about their mutual past. Keep up with great work! You hit the nail on the head! Excelsior! David
