  • Former Celtics player and ESPN "30 for 30" speaker. He has suffered substance abuse throughout his career, but has refocused his life to put sobriety and family above all else. He founded "The Herren Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing assistance to families affected by addiction. In 2012 The Herren Project launched a national anti-substance abuse campaign, Project Purple, to encourage people of all ages to stand up to substance abuse.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Six days sober today. I’m a 56 year old lawyer. I got whatever I wanted because as a Federal Prosecutor I had “credibility’”. Now I’m a grandmother. No one can avoid struggle and pain. It comes for us all, it’s supposed to. I’m going to be the calm in the storm when it comes for my two boys. One is already struggling with addiction. I’ve never admitted to this to anyone. This is my first time.

I went to see him speak a couple years ago. There were people in the audience nodding out, presumably having been brought there by concerned family/friends in hopes that his story could get through to them.
I hope it at least worked for a few of them.

Peezy Smith - you are the reason Chris Herren goes around the country devoting his life to this. If he can keep one person from going down that road, he has done something spectacular. I know he has affected many more lives than one, but knowing you'll never do drugs because of his story is a testament to his charisma and devotion as well as your dedication to live a life free from the chains of addiction.

Some people are just meant for something else. He is helping many people in ways he could never had done as an NBA hall of famer. Might not be as flashy a position, but in the end he found his purpose and that's worth a lot more.

I believe that all schools need speakers like this because people are still clueless about the power of addiction. They dont know how low the lows are and how high the highs are. Only the addict knows how it feels. The family knows the hell, but only the addict knows the pure desperation of addiction. The Herron Project is doing god's work.

Hello Chris, thank you for your testimony about your struggle with addiction, I too am an addict . On day 3 of sobriety from hydrocodone after more than 30 years. 3 days ago I was on the verge of losing my wife due to my choices of substance abuse! After hearing your story, it brought me to tears because I wish I had been sober sooner, your story touched me in so many relatable ways but the fact that you figured it out at 32 and I am now 53, it broke my heart! I started my journal today and overcame another hurdle by admitting to my wife and family that I had been stealing pills from my sister we care for who has bone cancer. I have a long road to recovery from this addiction so again thank you for touching my life! I will celebrate one year alcohol free in 4 days, just wish I had done this sooner! God Bless!

She has been in 7 rehabs and in the hospital for 13 times detoxing in 7 years. How I pray Chris's program in Warminster, VA along with thousands of prayer warriors on their knees will change her life and bring her back to God and her family!! God bless you Chris and your workers!!!

I deal with my mother being a drug addict and she tells my sisters and I not do ever do any kind of drugs because she doesn’t want us trying out like she did. I told her I don’t judge her by her past. It’s all about what your actions towards your future are! ❤️

And the beginning of his talk is exactly why I'm never going to hide the fact that I am an addict from my children. Of course age appropriate I think by the age of eight or nine my four month old will start to be introduced to it just like my almost 9-year-old already is. Explaining that Mommy is sick and Mommy has a disease and that you guys have the same disease etc the older they get the more they will learn I'm not going to lie to them I'm going to tell them if they try it they're going to absolutely love it and then they're going to want it more and more until It completely destroys their life. See my 9-year-old only has it on one side of the family while my four month old has it on both sides, me and his father are addicts. I am a recovering addict and his father is still ripping and running at the age of 45 and I think he might always be doing that. I'm 29 with my whole life ahead of me still and I'm definitely going to do all sorts of things for my boys. But I do like that you brought that up. Because parents should be talking to their children about addiction and alcoholism and the fact that they most likely are going to get addicted if they pick things up and try it... even alcohol at a party consume turn into them drinking it every single day and becoming dependent on it so far I'm adoring this Ted talk thank you ❤️❤️❤️

What finally helped him was a 12 step program...although it’s hardly mentioned...I’d love to hear his experience with the 12 step.
