To be honest, this was an eye opening video since the TRS and TRRS situation is unknown to most people including me. Thanks for enlighting me.
Concise and clear video and instructions. Thank you - fixed my problem.
Awesome video. It took a while to figure out that adapter + lighting connector situation.
Very brief, clear, to the point, and shows visuals.
Thanks!
Finally a thorough video about adapters and phone friendly mics. I had almost given up
I’m so happy to finally have a mic to use with my iPhone 8. Also I didn’t know about these different connectors but I do now. Rad video!
Oh my gosh, I've literally learned so much in such a small amount of time. Top marks for making such a wonderful clear video! I feel more confident in investing in an external microphone now!
Jake Bradley Thanks! Did you buy one?
It's the little gear bits like this that have made some of the biggest improvement to my client work and workflow. This, DSLR shooter's dual mic adapter, hot/cold shoe mounts, etc. The little things
thank you! i been tryin to troubleshoot this for a moment. glad i ran by this video 👍🏼
This was the explanation I needed. Very informative and on point. I need the trrs adapter
Simplest and most info-packed video on this subject. Thank you! 🌟🙏😊🌟

TRS works on camera/computer, 2 rings
TRRS needed for phone, 3 rings
Awesome! Thank you so much !!!
Excellent video Dee! This is a great explanation of a frequently confusing subject: TRS / TRRS / Adapters / Dongles 👍
Appreciate that. It’s a video that I should have made a while ago. A lot of requests for it.
Evergreen content with this one! Thanks so much. Great quality still in 2023

Man i know this is a four years old video, but i swear you're the only one that has been able to explain me why my microphone wasn't working on my phone

Thank you for this video. I was clueless before this :)
Great video. Just bought an xperia 5 iv to go along with my Nokia DSLR, and its great to know that I can share my external mics with the xperia with just a TRRS adaptor as it is one of the few phones that still has a 3.5mm jack
You rock my friend! Thanks a lot ✌🏼
Very helpful, thank you!
You’re the maaaaaaaannnnn!!!!! That’s what I was looking for!!!!! Thanks a million Dee 🙏🙏🙏. When you come to Italy the pizza 🍕 goes on me 😜
This is the best video ever for me. LOL thank you.
Yey! Thanks for the video, Dee. I am still researching on a good yet budget microphone to be used to my phone. I am so glad to watch this video because I don't have any idea about that TRS and TRRS mic.
Happy to help. Thanks for watching!

It's all about the tip.

Really useful tip! As a newbie, I'm using my smartphone to record my videos and felt limited to choosing smartphone friendly microphones only. Thanks

Useful video, perfect explanation, thank you.
Awesome info D!!! From your experience, does the S9 need an external microphone indoors or outdoors?
Right on !!♥️

Amazing video ... thank you very much. I finally figured out how to connect the microphone. You solved a big problem for me !!!!
Glad I could help!
Hi Dee,
Do you have any suggestions for plugging a mic and charger into an iPhone with just the one connector socket ie the iPhone 7.
I have found that streaming a live video for any length of time requires the phone to be plugged into the power supply.
Thanks in advance.
i wish everyone that do these "how to" would explain as simple and clearly as you have. And the visual on the really "how to" was much appreciated. Do you have a video on which ready to use cell phone mic recommendations? Right now I'm a RODE's lady lol!, but if there's something else that's simple and gets the job done, I'm open. Thanks for a great short straight to the point educational video. Were you an elementary teacher at some point lol! No really, were you?
absolutely perfect answer to my questions!
Awesome. Happy to help!
I’ve literally spent years trying to figure out how to connect my microphone to my smartphone! I decided to try fix the problem the other day but I only ordered a jack to iPhone adapter not the other one you need so I’ll have to wait and order that as well later. Thanks so much for this vid!! Really helped!! ❤️❤️❤️👍👍
I hope it works out for you! Come back and let me know.
Dee Nimmin I definitely thanks! ❤️🙏
Dee Nimmin Hi, so my apple lightening to headphone jack that’s plugs into my phone came today from amazon and now I just need the other adapter in the video that goes into the microphone to connect into this, is that correct? If so what did you say the name of it was? And where would you recommend ordering one? Thanks 🙏😊
Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
Thanks Dee, I came to your page from Nicks page, I’ve actually been trying to figure this out, so thanks so much for your help, champion.
Awesome! Thanks for coming over!
Dee Nimmin my pleasure, and thank you for all the helpful advice, you really add value to your subscribers
I appreciate your help. There should be no thumbs down because you are amazing.
Awww. Thank you. 😊
Thank you for this great video! I purchased a TAKSTAR SGC-598 shotgun mic to use with my LG G4 smartphone along the the RODE SC4 adaptor. Unfortunately, there is a significant hiss/background noise that seems to be produced by this combination. The mic works great on my PC but adding the adaptor for use with a smartphone seems to always produce unwanted background noise (regardless of shooting environment). Do you think the RODE SC4 adaptor I received might be defective or is there anything I can do to get better sound recording quality and reduce the noise reduction work required in post? Thanks for any tips you might be able to offer!
Big help again Dee. Thank you.
My pleasure. I’m glad you find my videos helpful.
Your vids are always helpful thank you so much 💕
Happy to help! Thanks for watching!
good explaination on trs/trrs.
Thanks for this 🙏🏻
Thank you very helpful. Had to click subscribe

I did a bit more research about trs and trss connectors because normally I didn't care about microphones, but the TRRS is divided into the left and right audio channels and one microphone channels. TRRS Tip (left headphone) Ring (right headphone) Ring (ground) Sleeve (microphone) if it's just the TRS Tip Ring Sleeve it leaves out the microphone element and just treated it like it's a stereo left and right headphone. If it's just a TS plug it'll only be mono audio with no microphone.
But microphones aside, I don't know if you've ever played around with it, but depending on the recording you listen to, if you pull it out so it's just the tip (pun not FULLY intentional) it will either remove all the right channel audio, or sometimes it will remove all the music, or it will remove most of the vocals because you're eliminating all the channels. It's really cool to do with Korn and Manson albums where there's lots of effects. Sometimes you'll get rid of the music, or sometimes it removes the guitars so you only hear the electronics, or sometimes it gets rid of the main guitars (from one channel) and leave only the under guitars (from the remaining channels)
It's fun to learn more about the tech behind tech.
Great video. Thanks 👍 Subscribed 💯

Great stuff.. really helpful 👍

All that TRRS, TRS stuff is something i never thought i needed to know. Glad i do now because i can now get a mic that's compatible with both my phone _and_ my laptop. 10/10 Video again Dee! 👊

This is an easy thing to get confused, thanks for posting it.
Thanks for watching. It’s a common request I get.
Yesterday only i received my new Boya BY-M1 lav mic... It's really a good quality mic, tnx for the recommendation Dee...✌️😊
Great video for people just getting into recording! I'd love if you do more beginner type videos. I've wanted to do more vlogs outside using my smartphone and know the internal mic in my smartphone is terrible, even though I think my camera looks good enough for what I'm doing currently.... I'm picky about audio.
Worst Waifu Thanks for your feedback. I have a handful of beginner videos on my channel. Head over to the video page on my channel and have a look.
Wow! This is very informative!
Happy to help.
Thanks, Dee. We're gonna be filming with the Galaxy S10 very soon. I opted to get this high production phone before a DSLR. Plus, I'm definitely getting the Rode Video Pro Plus. I'm about to take it to the next level. I have decided to use Streamlabs OBS and their website service, so that's coming soon, too.
How did it work out for you? I have a Galaxy s10e and this setup didn't work at all, the audio was terrible!
This was very helpul, Dee.
Thanks! 👊🏻
so much help. thank you so much
You're welcome!
Very helpfull
I love my bud dee tips love your tech vids friend.
Thanks man!
Thanks, very informative video. I added this to my playlist and subscribed.
I want to ask, is there a way I can use two mics connected to a single phone? I am shooting videos which highlights audio coming from my left + right speakers.
Or is it better to process the audio after shooting the video? If you can cover this in a seperate video, that would be great. Thanks in advance.
Awesome Dee, thank you for the microphone tips
Thanks Don! 👊🏻

Hey friend, I think it would be cool to explain or show what type of room or settings are best to record a voice over in.... Sometimes I have to go in to a closet to escape my loud offspring and sometimes I record sound in one of the bedrooms. I'm actually thinking the closet has less of an echoing sound but I'm not sure. 👍 Thanks for another great video!
so so useful, thanks
Thanks for watching.
Nick, amazing work. I'm a journalist from Mexico. Along with my dad, who's also a journalist, we're upgrading our work to streaming services and making all mobile (photos, text redaction, etc), so this helps us a lot. Would be amazing if you could talk about handheld mics, more focused for interviews and such, since this is a unknown topic for us.
His name is not Nick. His name is Dee. Nick is his brother.
Question for you. I have a HTC U11 and I bought the Movo mic which comes with the trrs adapter for phone. I plug that into the usbc dongle but get nothing. it uses the phone mic and I cant figure it out. Permissions are set to allow the mic in the camera app. (standard camera that came with the phone)
Thanks sir
Hello sir Thanks for video... could you please tell me how did you mount that Rode video mic in the phone.... If you have product page for that holder or stand whatever, could you please share?
Running the Rode video mic pro, the trrs adapter, and iPhone doggle….other than the cable setup you demonstrated, could there be a setting in the phone I may need to adjust?
I hope that this specific Rode SC4 adapter will work with my OnePlus 5, since I've tried a "no brand" cable like that before to no avail. Still patiently waiting for Android to roll out the advanced audio settings update to the remainder of the phones that already exists on Samsung Dex where you can manually choose the input and output sources. Anyway, great video Dee! Liked & subbed bro 😁👊🏼
I use the Blue Snowball ICE but that's because I do voice-only videos now and because it's very professional and affordable compared to a lot of other mics.
That’s a decent mic, we have one at the studio. Don’t use it anymore but it sounds pretty good.
I know it’s been a year, but if I wanted to use headphones as well, could I use a headphone/mic audio split cable instead of just a TRS to TRRS adapter
Thank you. 🙏 for the info but I didn't find the link for the adaptor for rod lava+ to Iph 12.
Thank you for your video. I would like to connect a lavalier mic to my Samsung S8+. I have to buy a usb c-cable with a TRRS female jack at the other end. Am I correct?
