  • This video is a smartphone microphone review of the Rode VideoMic Me-L mini shotgun made for iOS, iPhone, and iPad users. The Android version of this mic is called simply the VideoMic Me and is the same microhone, only the connector is different. The VideoMic Me-L connects via Lightning connector. Is this the best affordable iPhone microphone? You decide.
    I compare the sound of the mic with the internal mic inside my iPhone XS. The audio tests are made outside, inside, and as a stand along audio recorder for podcasting or voice over work using a smartphone.
    If you're interested in buying the Rode VideoMic Me-L microphone, please visit B&H or another professional gear shop. Amazon does not carry this microphone.

    I always shoot indoor, but there is a lot of ambient sound in the background and there is also noise coming from the outside since the room isn't soundproof.

    Whoa that audio difference with and without the windscreen on the road with motorbikes was huge!

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Lindsey, if you're able to get the Rode Video Pro+ shotgun mic, I'd go for that one. It's the one I use the most. You'll need a TRS > TRRS adapter to make it work with your phone but it sounds great. It's expensive but you get what you pay for. Another great mic that cost a bit less is the Shure MV88+ that plugs in like this one. I have a test coming up with that as well. If you're going to spend the $79 for this, I'd spend a little more for a better sounding mic.

    • @LindseyHazel
      @LindseyHazel 5 лет назад

      Dee Nimmin Completely agree that you get what you pay for. Hey Dee
    Thanks a lot for this review! As this is a directional microphone, I'm wondering whether it would work for my specific use case?
    I'm busking on the streets, and while I'm having a "real" portable PA with both microphone and guitar input, I'd sometimes like to not carry around all that stuff and still be able to amplify both my voice and my guitar.
    I have an iPhone holder that I can attach to the front of my acoustic guitar, so I can look at my iPhone's screen while playing. I thought: why not just use my microphone to pick up both the guitar and my voice, and connect a little Bluetooth speaker to amplify? While wearing headphones, this works perfectly (sound quality isn't great, but enough for my purpose). But as soon as I connect the speaker, I get terrible feedback issues (no surpise here).
    So - do you think using a directional microphone like the RØDE VideoMic Me (and placing the speaker in front of myself, facing to the audience), I would get a better result?
    Maybe you could give it a try? I would love to hear your opinion.
    Thank you!

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  4 года назад

      For that I would spend a little more and get the Sure MV88+. It has an app that allows you to change how to mic works. Search for that mic in RUclips and see some of the reviews on it, it’s good. Make sure to look for the +, there is an older model with that. You can monitor your sound with headphones with the +.

    Hey Dee I went out and bought the BOYA because you suggested it and it’s terrible in a breezy environment even with the foam thingy on it. Is this any better? Have you tried it in wind?

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  4 года назад

      My apologies for the late reply. I'm just now seeing a flood of comments now that RUclips added the new comment filter. Mics can only do so much with wind. The bigger the wind screen, the better it helps reduce the noise. You could try to double up the foam on the Boya if you still have it. You can order foam covers really cheap. I set up a motovlog rig once with a double foam cover and it worked really well. This mic you for SURE will need the large wind screen it comes with.

    Dee, thinking about the Rode Video Mic Me-L as an alternative to the problems I am having trying to get the Rode Wireless Go to sync with my iPhone X. I purchased the Rode SC7 patch cable and the dongle that goes between the SC7 and the iPhone. It does’t work. I get no audio whatsoever. Any thoughts?............Thanks

      Hey Doug, are you using an official Apple lightning port to 3.5mm adapter? I’ve heard of off brand adapters not working with various accessories.
      Shoot me an email: nimmindee@gmail.com
      and let’s try to trouble shoot this. It should work with the SC7 and the right adapter.
      * make sure the grey side of the SC7 is going into your phone and not the mic. The grey is the TRRS side.

    I purchased the Video Mic Me, years ago that connected to the headphone jack. I was disappointed with the lack of shielding; the cell phone signals created random noise unless I put the phone in Airplane Mode.

    • @DeeNimmin
      @DeeNimmin  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Shawn. I've found that to be the case with a handful of mics. Now, it's a habit to always put my phone in airplane mode before I record. I've had messages interrupt me too.

    • @ShawnWeekly
      @ShawnWeekly 5 лет назад

      I always forget. I attempted to write a script for my Android phone to automatically, put it into Airplane Mode when Filmic Pro is open, and the mic is connected. Wouldn't work without rooting my phone.
      So I opted to get a Movo, and connect it to my Zhiyun Smooth 4.
      The mic level is a bit lower than my liking bit it's a great result. (Still have to do the airplane mode switch, because of the reason you listed 😛)
      Now the challenge is having to use the front facing camera on my Pixel 2 with Filmic pro, because the phone gimbal cradle is bulky and blocks the controls.
      I recently tried to vlog a family vacation (Road trip) on my phone and missed so much footage, because I was also using my phone as GPS, and to listen to podcasts... It was such a hassle to film, and by the time I got things setup the moments were gone.
      A USB C mic like the VIDEOmic would be a wonderful, in my opinion.
      Thanks for the content you create I really enjoy your channel.

  • @NickAilesMusic
    @NickAilesMusic 5 лет назад +1

    I've been using the Video Mic Me for about a year now. Like you said, it's a bit quiet compared to a larger diaphragm mic.
    It's certainly no Neumann, but I've had acceptable results with live Facebook videos, and even live music videos. Most of the music videos on my channel were recorded with this mic.
    One thing folks should be aware of is that if you're using a wide angle lens, the pop filter may show up in your video. This also could be a problem if your headphone input is on the same side as your camera. Just something to be aware of before buying.

    • @NickAilesMusic

      Agreed. It's worth the price they're asking. I was able to get it for $60 when it first came out, and wasn't looking to invest alot of money since I was just starting out. I feel like it's a decent mic to start with. It's definitely better than using the built in mic on your phone.

    Does anybody else have a problem using external mic on their phone? I have an oppo f5 and when I use my external mic (with adaptor) my camera or audio recorder won't use it, instead I have to use another camera app open camera - but then the video/lighting quality is reduced. If I use a regular mic/headphone mobile headset it works fine. Quite annoying! Would love to know if anyone else has this problem.

    • @DeeNimmin

      That’s strange. Inside of Open Camera go into settings at look at the resolution and Bitrate if you see that option. It sounds like the quality setting is low.
      For light, do you know if Open Cam is set to auto or manual settings?
      I’m not sure why it doesn’t work the other way. That’s very odd.

    • @AdvanceInEnglish
      @AdvanceInEnglish 5 лет назад

      @@DeeNimmin Thanks for the reply Dee. I'll look closer at the bitrate. I forgot to mention this is when I use the front facing camera (on my phone the front camera is better than the back camera, and I like to see myself when filming too). It's only in low light environments it looks really dark and low quality even when I adjust the settings, but if I use my actual phone camera app the quality is still good.

    I was fooled at first thinking when I plugged this in with my thin iPhone case that it was working, I could hear a minor difference but when I took the case off I was truly able to plug the mic solidly in and get a bigger difference in sound quality. What case will work with this mic on iPhone 11 Pro? I see many reviewers using cases with it and wonder if the mic is 100% in or they found a case that works.

    • @DeeNimmin

      You have to find a case that has the bottom cut out so the mic will be able to connect properly. I’ve used an Apple leather case with it and it worked but look for one where the bottom around the port has plenty of open space.
