Like Chris Rock said, if the emergency room is filled with people who have paper cuts, how will the heart attack victim get through?
As people like Harrie and Megan promote the idea of everybody is a victim of trauma, Then what is to make a victim of real trauma stand out enough to be seen, heard, and lifted up by society?

I find it weird that people are claiming this was supposed to be a therapy session when the people involved like Gabor Maté called it a conversation. He's had many conversations about trauma with many different people to raise awareness about all the different nuances and talk about potential causes / effects and what the person he's talking to found to be helpful. He has also made it clear numerous times that he is not a trauma expert but is just interested in learning more about trauma due to his personal and professional experience. Just because this time he's talked to Harry people are either distorting what he said or reading way too much into every little thing.

I often think of a 15th century citizen complaining about their parents... I think they would have received a rude awakening about reality and life. I apologized to my mom for blaming her for my problems and we discussed this aspect. Our parents are only victims of their environments during their childhood and down the chain it goes. Therapy is a lot different in the US. Psychiatrists are mostly only for people who need medication, and therapists are usually psychologists or social workers. Their offices are more comfortable and welcoming, and people go for different reasons: trauma, couples counseling, etc. But one iron clad rule is that it is PRIVATE. It never leaves the office unless the patient has committed or plans to commit a crime. You simply can’t have a therapist’s session on TV that is any good.

The problem with therapists as you describe in the U.S., are that they are often not medically trained professionals, and who lack the proper training to diagnose and effectively treat patients. In many cases, and I suspect in Harry’s, therapist(s) are a mere sounding board, and don’t delve into the patients’ character flaws, including responsibility for any trauma experienced or for life choices they’ve made. This includes unscrupulous therapists who seek repeat patients for financial gain. It is one area in health care that needs greater scrutiny and regulation. What Harry needs is proper and full psychiatric diagnosis, and therapy by an accredited “therapist” tied to a hospital or accredited medical clinic.

Analysis or not, narcissists love therapy. They love to be perpetual victims, complaining to a person who never gets tired, never challenges them or confronts them. Many narcissists use a partner or child as their "therapist". This is a fundamentally exploitative relationship.

Thank you. Therapy is not readily available and I appreciate you pointing this out . Harry is selling it as part of his contract with Better Up. People and their fans need to know that only a few can afford therapy and Harry is excluding us. To him it's a 5 star restaurant. Only the select can get a table and by the sounds of it Harry is having everything on the menu. So many people are suicidal and using hotlines and helplines manned by script reading volunteers, who yell people to go to ER. Harry has no idea how hard it is for the 99% he refers to . He is not living in the real world and never will. Most government health programs don't cover therapists or psychiatrists. So it's all lies ! But Harry doesn't care , he's found a new snake oil to sell and all it does is pad his bank account . Buyer beware.

I'm disappointed with Gabor Mate for diagnosing Harry solely from the reading of his book. They had not established a therapeutic relationship. This was very shallow.
Mate agreeing to televising this "conversation" seemed unethical to me. The therapeutic process is based on the safety of privacy. This felt like a showcase for Harry to convince us that he's doing just fine in life despite harm done to him by his loved ones. It was strategic. Mate got more public exposure for his commercial enterprises like books and lectures. The whole exchange was unsavory to me.

  • @ukagingrockchick
    @ukagingrockchick Год назад +14

I feel there were two reasons for this particular 'conversation'. The obvious one is that both of these men have the same publisher and this publisher has a history of 'persuading' their clients to support each other when there are books to be sold. The second is that Harry has had so much negative feedback on his drug abuse confessions that he needed a 'respectable authority' to vindicate his past, present, and for all we know, future addictive behaviour.

I agree with your comments. As a former psych evaluator (usually Baker Acted clients with the criteria of "harming yourself or someone else"). The evaluation consisted of a 2 hour interview and 20 handwritten pages of notes from the conversation. It was nothing like the "fireside chat" to which you refer. Harry was not at all deferential to the trauma doctor and, in fact, tried to correct Dr M. I was surprised when Dr M listed the 4 diagnoses, but neglected to mention drug & alcohol abuse/addiction. So many of my former clients had dual diagnoses, like bipolar disorder plus alcohol abuse. He didn't ask what kind of prescription had Harry taken in the past or recently. I was disappointed Dr M was not very interactive with Harry. Like you mentioned, Dr M did not take the opportunity to draw more answers out of Harry. It was a disappointing interview, and as you may agree, Harry was rationalizing his use of drug taking and giving the viewer a way of rationalizing their own use of drugs. Thanks for your comments.

I’ve got to say the therapist was extremely helpful and after my sessions, suggested a mindfulness course, which was also very helpful. But it was nothing like what was seen in this session.

This has been his regime for at least 10 years as he has a pinched nerve in his back and nerve pain. I also have him on Galiprant for arthritis. I’ve noticed for the last couple of weeks he’s been kind of yippee and seems uncomfortable. Especially when he lays down for too long or when he goes to get up. I think it’s the nerve pain. I think the gabapentin isn’t working as well as it used to. Would I be better off asking his vet to increase the gabapentin to 200 mg twice a day? Because I know you can develop a tolerance overtime. I've never understood the 45-60 min. limit for therapy sessions, except for the fact that therapists need to treat other patients. In some cases, specially in first interviews, the patient is only starting to unfurl their feelings when time is up. I've known people who have quit therapy because of this.

I think what Harry has been doing might have turned people away from therapy. If they look at his life as a result of having therapy and talking about his problems has led him to be disliked, ridiculed and isolate from his family. What kind of advocate is that? As to the drugs, that is dangerous ground. Some people with drug addictions and have mental health issues will see that as permission to go by drugs off the street. He can warn people to do it with a doctor but that isn’t the part that will influence their decision.

Raj Persaaud doesn't know what he is talking about and Gabor Mate is world famous and an expert. Even though I don't like Harry since he's become woke I do understand the approach of Gabor Mate, which does not advocate catharsis. The point of getting things "out of your system" is the understanding how unresolved feelings and trauma get stuck somatically. Of course catharsis doesn't work, as this just implies a bleeding off of the energy, the whole point is that it has to be connected and the original trauma energy or memory worked with then it is healed.
Raj Persaaud i'm sure like many psychiatrists is happy to dole out the anti depressants, and cannot offer a real resolution of past emotional issues, but Gabor Mate does. Plant medicines are fantastic at offering tools to do this and good for Harry for doing this.

He's done a lot of medical intervention, deep contemplation, research and writing, not to mention having helped a lot of addicted souls who were lost in a cruel system. He's helped a lot of people for whom conventional psychiatry didn't work. I was shocked to hear that he would participate in Prince Harry's 'world privacy tour'. Why he'd throw away some of his credibility for this circus escapes me. And saddens me. Gabor Maté's already famous. He doesn't need a fake therapy session on the internet to feed his ego, one would hope. I'm trying to imagine what value he sees in doing this kind of stunt.

I'm also stuck on why a big weight has been lifted by telling the whole world about his frozen bits, brotherly fights, and whatever else he stuck in that book. Basically he is saying "I was traumatized by others - due to the public life I'd been brought into - so by exposing myself over and over, and hurting others - it's made the world a better place, ... for me (me me me me me).
This is the approach one of the characters in Silence of the Lambs used. He was abused so his idea of taking a load off was to beat and humiliate himself repeatedly. Then to get a hold of others to spread the pain, chaos, and fear around. It made him smile like Harry does in this clip actually. It's surreal the crap people are exposed to now-a-days.
