Thanx for sharing, but in recreational level on of the players doesn't know how to do the right volley, what are your thoughts about it...should he or she be in the same position that you explain Coach??thank you all the best
I've just applied most of these with my doubles partner for the last two weekends, and now we've been crushing our regular opposition, against whom we used to struggle until now. Your tips have been more than invaluable, they've completely transformed our game!
Mind you, I'm planning on instructing our opposition with these tips as well, so we could make things even again. Fair is fair. But first I'll let them suffer for a while. >:-]
Wow !!! Out of all the dubs content on YT I have seen (and I have watched a ton lol). This is probably one of the best comprehensive doubles explanation of court movement and tips in one video. Thanks for putting it together. Love your doubles content 👍
Been coaching High School tennis for 25 years. I always make comparisons to other sports like baseball, hockey etc. These players understand zone defense and the concept of following the ball. Also my basketball and hockey players want to go to the net. They are drilled in how to close in and double team the defense. They understand how to move to cut off the ball/ puck. Serving is like pitching baseball. You got to move the ball and know the weakness of batter and throw the pitch that they don’t like. It is much easier to coach players with this type of experience. I loved coaching tennis to hockey players. They laughed when they got hit at the net and you better not cheat them on a line call !
I cannot over-emphasize this: you present complex ideas easily and crisply; whereas nothing is ever easy/complex: implementing it almost always is. You are a great coach and you have certainly helped many of us improve our play. Way to go and keep going!!!
They are not complex but common sense doubles. Doubles 101. But applying them, yes, this is the great challenge. Seasoned Doubles players do these automatically - and then some.
@@ericdishington428 One becomes "seasoned" with proper training and experience, or players would not "do these automatically". Everyone was inexperienced and a beginner at some point, right?

This is the best, comprehensive doubles strategy video I've ever watched. It has been incredibly helpful and I've watched it over and over again. Thank You!
Wow, having played doubles for the last 3 years I was always aware that I didn't know my job. I would always ask for advice on where to stand, what to do, however, all of my questions have been answered in your 25min post. I now understand where to stand, why I am doing this and what to do. Thank you so much for these strategies. They have had an immediate impact. All I have to do now is work on my volleys, overheads and serve. Thanks again.
Dear Ryan, thank you so much for this double strategy lesson! This is absolutely amazing and an enlightenment for me! I strongly recommend this video for every new oder amateur double player. I have been playing tennis now for over two years and also been playing doubles from the beginning. But no one told me, what to do or how to play doubles correctly. After two years of losing all the time and not knowing what to do about it, I started getting frustrated about doubles. Then I found your strategy video... I watched it three times this week, making notices to memorize it. It was awesome to me, because it is all so simple and logical. Then yesterday I met with my friends to play and what should I say: I won both sets 6:3 and 7:6, only with just halve of the tipps! I actually have no paypal-account to donate, but will create one just for this reason! Greetings and all the best from Germany!!!
Wow thank you so much!! If you’d like to donate my PayPal is ryan@2minutetennis.net. Congrats on winning those matches and I’m so glad the hear this video helped you!!!
This was so helpful; I am immediately seeing improvement in my doubles matches. Can I suggest a doubles strategy video where you go over doubles service placement-various spots in the box-and what the percentage returns are and what the net player should be looking for depending on where the serve goes?
I took up tennis at 45 you, played a lot and took a lot of lessons and read a lot of books for 10 years, and then got away from the game for 10 years, gained a lot of weight, and got slow. I've taken off 60 pound(still have 80 to go) and now for the last 3 months, I've been trying to get competitive again. I really stink. So I'm watching a lot of videos to catch back up. I think I learned more about doubles strategy from this one video than any I've seen lesson I've taken or book I've read so far. I really like 2 minute tennis. But I really, really like this video. Thanks. Keep up the good work. One thing I would add. Instead of windshield wipers, I was taught to pretend there is a rope that attaches you to your partner and keep that distance consistent as your partner is moved around the court.
Great question. Covering half the court doesn’t mean standing in the middle of your area. It means covering 50% of the space that your opponent can hit. Just like a goal keeper in soccer doesn’t always stand directly between the posts. They adjust their positioning left and right based on where the ball is. There are other factors as well that determine where to stand.
Good video and collection of strategies that work on all levels. I'm not sure did you mention this on the video but wanted to point out the importance of sideways movement as well (regarding the tennisball being a magnet). This is especially important during serves and returns. If your partner serves out wide, tip #9 says they would be most likely hitting a cross court. Well if they aim down the line, it will still be "cross court" for them if they are pulled far enough so as a net player, you have to also be careful of this and move sideways accordingly. Another point I would like to make is regarding tip #2. This applies most of the time if you are in a neutral position but if as a net player, you are in trouble (picking a low ball etc), hitting it to the other net player would be a bad idea. A good addition to the rule as a net player would be "if you are hitting above the net, hit it towards the other net player but if you are hitting below the net, hit it towards the baseline player." But otherwise a great video.
I usually play doubles with the seniors, and their serves are so slow you can time it with a sundial! I actually bring my level down so that I can have fun playing the points out! But any time I am serving I can get easy points off missed return of serves. I love playing tennis with the seniors, they are so nice, and they like the way I play doubles. I know that we can’t cover everything so I give them the alleys and cover the middle. But there are so much to learn about the game of tennis. Great job on the video Coach Ryan. Thank you
What an awesome video. Great concepts explained with clarity and practical advise to implement them. As an intermediate player who started Tennis late in life, these lessons are a gold mine of knowledge. On a lighter note, any video which holds my attention span for this long automatically qualifies as awesome.
Pretty solid tips. I'd only amend the tip about court coverage, as some might take it too literally and put themselves out of position in a sense. Essentially, you want to cover the big targets and shrink the open targets available, and make them have to hit too good a shot to win. Essentially you want them to go for high risk shots and take away safe options.
This explains why I lost many points that I was not supposed to in doubles games. Can't thank you enough!! I cannot wait to try our these strategies in the next match!!
If you follow these strategies carefully you’ll beat teams you’ve never beaten before. Good luck and keep me posted!!! Don’t forget tip #2. Hit the ball to the opponent who’s standing where you’re standing. It’s game changing. Thanks you!!
So much for two minutes! But great video. I've saved it so I can re-watch frequently. I'm relatively new to doubles and have been struggling a bit with the tactics, but this makes it all sound so simple, so thanks for posting.
These are all incredible tips!! The only thing I might add is for tip 9, if the serve is deep the returner will usually follow the across the body pattern as stated, however if the serve lands short, the opposing net player should cover the line slightly more as the returner will have a much easier time hitting a down the line passing shot regardless which side of their body the ball was on. The same goes for returns.
Thank you for this video, I'm getting ready to play league for the first time and have been voraciously reading about strategy for doubles and watching instructional videos. This is by far one of the best I've seen and so easy to understand. I'm going to share it with my teammates. Thank you!
Wow thank you!! Good luck and let me know how they ideas work for you. Def watch it many times. You have to have these ideas down pat in order to actually implement them. Thanks again!!
This is one of the best and easy to understand doubles strategies I have read. Definitely will follow this guidance to improve my doubles game. I always thought one up and one back is better than both back. Now I know better! And yes, I do remembered my net partner was being ganged up on at the net when I stay back. She’s a great net player but she has to deal with 2 net players going at her while I am in the back. Thanks so much!!!
Wow. That’s quite a comment. Thank you soooo much for the kind words of support. Have a great day and thanks again for trusting me to help you play better!! 😊
@20:30 I remember years ago whilst losing a doubles match badly, I then told my partner we should both play back and we had an incredible come-back. This explains it. We eventually lost but still 😂
Two back should be the main defensive strategy for club players, especially as they age. Few club players have the skills to play one up and one back better than two back.....not only the shot skills, but the shot SELECTION skills and the net play and overheads. Lobbing is the most important skill a player can develop for doubles, then return of serve, then volleying. ...and overheads. Two back can also be very effective on offense as well. One thing the teacher got wrong here is that when you are at the net and someone hits a good lob over your head, you should move BACK to the baseline as well as crosscourt. Other wise you are in weak defensive position, while your opponents are in a good offensive position.
I find doubles so complicated, but your videos are amazing. We are playing a pretty hard-hitting team on the weekend so I'm excited to finally implement great strategies without the anxiety I usually have of not knowing where to stand or be. And to be honest I don't look forward to my doubles comp days because I almost always feel out of place, but now I am some valuable strategies that I understand (most are too confusing) I'm excited. Thank-you!
Very very helpful explaining.. Catered in very simple manner easy to digest for basic level amateurs... I play by instinct and in my circle of friend I'm The "serve and volley player" just because they are stuck in the posizione like we are in trench wars....while I try to shadow the ball all time Now I really understand more
Thanks so much!! When played correctly it’s more fun than singles (in my opinion). Doubles has a lot more strategy and thinking in it. But again, just my opinion. Thanks so much!!
Great tips. I love your coaching strategies. Any ideas for "Performing worse in matches than practice "? Thanks so much for sharing... trying to apply them in sunny South Africa 🇿🇦
Ryan, thanks for the tips on playing doubles & proper serves. Definitely helpful & you helped solving my confusion in these areas for a while. Love your channel!
Thank you for sharing this information, I have been playing doubles for years and have taken many doubles clinics, but I still learned some new things from your video!
Great vid. Whenever I’ve tried both players back, the other team just started landing volleys at good sharp angles that were out of reach. Both players getting to the service line is key!
Thanks Ryan! This video is so helpful and easy to understand. I have 2 more questions for you: 1. If my partner has a weak second serve, should I stand at the service line just in case the returner crash the ball? 2. If I am the net player and my opponent lops me, should I always call "switch" and move to the baseline on the other half of the court as you mentioned in the video, or I can also maybe run back and try to return the lob? Thanks again for your help!
This video is an excellent resource for those of us who are just learning to think strategically on the court (ahem, me!) Thank you for posting this 27-minute masterclass! It's exactly what I needed, and I'm sure I'll refer back to it regularly :)

Hello, this is one of the best explanations / strategies I have seen for playing doubles. Congratulations and from now on, you have a new subscriber from Mexico.
Thanks so much for sharing these valuable lessons. I shared it with my teammates and hope to implement even half of these lessons this year. Happy hitting all!
Great explanation, my game in double increase with 30 % better in net game as a result of positioning in the right place and right time, thanx for sharing
Excellent vide it makes a lot of sense the way you explained it and the tips will stick. Often times coaches just say move back and really don't explain the logic behind these moves. Thank you
I've watched a lot of tennis videos but this one must be the most epic of them all. Thanks much for these super insightful tips, I feel sorry for the double opponents I'm going to play the coming year as I learn to implement all this 😊
What a super informative video!! Thank you so much for teaching me these unwritten fundamental rules of doubles tennis!! It will be super awesome if you could do videos on I-Formation and Australian formation in a doubles match. Are they the same or are they different? How and when is poaching most effective in normal doubles formation versus the above two formations? Following up on that with giving examples of what doubles partners say to each other in between points, and what are the most effective hand signals from net players giving to their baseline partner?
Nice. Next week I'm going to my friend's house who is a tennis pro and I'm going to play doubles with him. I'm going to get him to watch this video when I get there. That way, we can make a few stratigies. This was very helpful. Thanks!
Hi Ryan, you are Excellent! Please explain to me that why the net person needs to hit the ball to the other team's net person. I normally hit it to the open area. Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the question Albert. The reason is because hitting to open spaces is an easy. It’s much easier to hit to a person. In my explanation I say that you’ll be right 80% of the time, the 20% of the time covers the other situation like hitting to open space. There’s very little open space on a doubles court so it’s easier just to know who to hit the ball toward to increase the likelihood that you win the point. Try it and you’ll see how well it works. Thanks so much Albert
I actually think it’s easier to serve down the middle of the tee because the net is lower in the middle of the net, but I do use the slice a lot on my serves. I appreciate your great coaching strategies Coach thank you.

Ryan, you are a Master teacher & trainer! These are exactly the tips I have been needing and asking for!
@1:27 Shouldn't the X for SP be more to the left to include the alley as that would mean you are properly covering your 50% of the width of the court?
Great question. Covering half the court doesn’t mean standing in the middle of your area. It means covering 50% of the space that your opponent can hit. Just like a goal keeper in soccer doesn’t always stand directly between the posts. They adjust their positioning left and right based on where the ball is. Yes! Both back is an awesome strategy. Underused for sure! Thanks for sharing your memories.
Two back should be the main defensive strategy for club players, especially as they age. Lobbing is the most important skill a player can develop for doubles, then return of serve, then volleying. ...and overheads. Two back can also be very effective on offense as well.

Thanks for watching Tonio.
Thank you Ryan. Definitely sharing this with my team...
One of the best video ever!!! Thank you.
Excellent vide it makes a lot of sense the way you explained it and the tips will stick. Often times coaches just say move back and really don't explain the logic behind these moves. Thank you
So glad you liked the video Sylvia!
Just shared this video with my double partner. Im very thankful for your videos and happened to find your channel this afternoon. Serendipity.
I've watched a lot of tennis videos but this one must be the most epic of them all. Thanks much for these super insightful tips, I feel sorry for the double opponents I'm going to play the coming year as I learn to implement all this 😊
Hahaha I feel badly for them too! Go get em Paul! Thanks for watching!
와우~ 좋은 전략 감사합니다. 공이 잡아 당기듯 위치를 옮겨가라는 말씀~ 머리에 쏙 들어오는군요.
Nice. Next week I'm going to my friend's house who is a tennis pro and I'm going to play doubles with him. I'm going to get him to watch this video when I get there. That way, we can make a few stratigies. This was very helpful. Thanks!
So glad you liked to!! Keep me posted how your doubles goes with him!! Have a great day and thanks for the support!!
@@2MinuteTennis you're welcome!!!
How was your match? Did the tips, tricks and strategy work?🐬
@@splitraven7060 the strategy helped a lot. When he was my partner, we never lost and easily won every set.
Thank you for this beautiful session. Very helpful
Terrific video Ryan. Thanks for putting all these tips together.
So glad you liked the video!!
My school calls it the doubles dance. The ball magnet analogy is also really good
Yes I sometimes call it that too! Thanks so much.
I must admit. The quality of information is superb. New subscriber.
Wow thank you!! Happy to have you aboard! Thanks for the support Sandman!
I would just like to send this video to all of my team mates such a great content! Congratulations Ryan for the great job!! :-)
Hey I’m so glad you liked the video. Appreciate the support !
Excellent, simple instructions. Positioning before balls are hit is key.
This is an excellent video. Thanks Ryan
Great video, very straight to the point
Excellent! My 11 year old daughter came over and she couldn't take her eye off this! thanks Coach!
Great. So glad she liked the video!!
Great Tips. Thanks for sharing. Question: Where can I get one of those boards, super helpful? Thanks.
Thanks man, this video is a must watch for doubles play!
Great videos. Easy to follow and clearly explained.. Keep up the good work.
Wonderful video. So helpful. Your explanations are so thorough and understandable.
Great summary of key doubles tactics !
I actually think it’s easier to serve down the middle of the tee because the net is lower in the middle of the net, but I do use the slice a lot on my serves. I appreciate your great coaching strategies Coach thank you.
