It’s crazy it’s 10 years later and this video is still useful. What’s also crazy is that Xbox 360 controllers are still good as new unlike Xbox one, ps5 and switch controllers that get stuck drift after a week
Hey buddy thanks for posting this video. I know you posted it like 7 years ago, but I still use XBOX 360 controllers and I've decided to purchase one of these transforming D-pads. Everything went according to plan because of the video.
I just wanted to chime in that this tut really helped me out. I got a bundle of pads from dealextreme for about 2.80 each and the first pad I modded was my wired USB pad that I use with my desktop PC. Works a treat, the USB pad is thinner without the battery compartment but it still fits and works perfectly. If anybody finds a direction doesn't work, your cuts are probably not straight, not level, or not deep or wide enough. You need to test that the pad can travel in its slot before reassembling. Thanks for the info, got five more pads to mod.
In stead of doing the circle method with the outer layer. I found it easter to take a small philips screw driver and make holes around the d pad layer and then proceed to chip the rest of the prices with a flat head screw driver. This was a very helpful toturial. I thank the person for making this.
Great tutorial! I’ve followed your instructions and successfully managed to get the Transforming D-Pad working on my wired controller. Congrats for the video, man! :D
Thank you CG, great informative video. I've done a couple of these under your direction. It does appear that some controllers work better with this mod than others. I did an older white pad which worked great and a newer black which had major precision problems. The great thing about this mod is even with the extra plastic removed you can always put back the old D-pad if things don't work out with the new transforming one. No risk at all, just follow CG's instruction.
For those who are afraid to damage their controller, you can buy an extra 360 controller shell on aliexpress for a few bucsk and use that front cover to cut out the hole. That way it won't be so bad if you screw up.
Just a suggestion, after sanding I would use a VERY small amount of acetone on a paper towel on the plastic after sanding to remelt the plastic. this would look a bit cleaner.
I also did this but used an existing top shell from a controller with a rotating D-pad. The shell and the D-pad fit right into place on the USB controller and it's working perfectly. Might be handy if you already have both controllers. The only thing I needed to buy was a torx security bit screwdriver for like $5.
I bought 5 Dpads from ebay and I had the same question as yours, so I wanted to test it on one since I have 5 of them and it Worked. Just cut two edges on the dpad replacement and you're ready to go :)
Don’t waste your time. Does not work well at all. Everything but up works well for me. Up doesn’t even register. EDIT: Fixed it. Only follow this tutorial up until the point he takes the inner rim out, then stop right there. All you had to do is clip two of the pegs off on the transforming d-pad, just like how the original d-pad only has two pegs, it feels A LOT better now and the inputs are much more accurate. Did this in a wireless AND a wired.
My transforming dpad completely broke off and I want to replace it. It's a controller that had it originally so i'm guessing it will be a lot easier to replace than modding an old controller? Someone please answer, that part seems like an hassle it would be nice knowing I wouldn't have to do that with a controller that had it originally.
Big thanks for this tutorial! I've wanted to add this dpad to my 360 controllers for a while, i play a lot of platformers and it feels more accurate for those kind of games
Thanks for the video, I just did this and it helped a lot. Although it takes me more than 15 minutes to cut the ring out with a screw driver, but it work. Anyway, if you are using the stock button membrane, you'll have to cut it a bit or you will end up with a very stiff "right" and "down" button.
You are right.. but coming to the real question, is the transforming dpad performance better than the old one? I read many reviews but I wanted to test it myself.. unfortunately, the improvement on the transforming dpad is barely noticeable.. I am back to the PS3 controller and the MotionJoy..
Eh... my d-pad was still pretty assy, even with this mod. I kept going thinking I could make it better but I just completely ruined the front cover. I think the issue with the d-pad is that it has to function so far away from the board, so it's less rotation and more "pressing down on all of the buttons until the weakest link gives in".
I only went as deep as the two original indents went so best to leave it as deep as those. After that place the cardboard piece over the dpad but make sure the center hole fits over that middle post of the dpad. (BTW the thickness of the cardboard should be thin like a cereal box otherwise it'll be the same as before)
I had the new controller when it came out.. but playing cod after a while broke my left thumb stick and it was non-repairable. Bought a cheap wired controller and took out the d=pad from the broken one.. But instead of using a razor (which is pretty dangerous if you ask me lol) I just cut slits in the inner ring with a pair of scissors and popped them off.. its a little less time consuming as well. and you're in control of what's going on. and a bit of sand paper to smooth out the rough bits.Done. People asking "why not cut off the tabs instead of cutting out two holes for the tabs. the more tabs that are being held in place the more sturdier the d-pad will.
You are also correct in that a CNC Milling machine will work like butter, but you need a steady hand to do it without messing up the circular enclosure. Hence this method by hand, excuse the expression is crude, in which I mean it requires the user to have a bit of hand strength to cut the plastic (not everyone can do and it can result in small injuries) and unlike a CNC machine with a steady hand or the tool We developed it leaves a lot of fringe plastic that you will need to sand down.
It is a improvement to the stock 360 d pad. Plus gives you more options. One way makes it almost like a third joy stick. The second way more of a traditional d pad.
Buddy just buy a cone cutter drill bit takes seconds have done them myself loads of times go for the smooth ones and not the ones with steps on and they look just like they were made for it. That tool is perfect for that job and I bet it's the tool that guy is on about :)
Got the exact same thing here, I even made sure that everything is 100% using a dremel and a ton of patience. Still works like a charm despite of that, but it's weird.
I would install a chrome gold transforming d pad in my old black controller but it seems too much hassle and I don't want to ruin my controller especially as I only just got it some bullet buttons and gonna get it a chrome gold mod kit with a normal flat chrome gold d pad
The problem with my xbox 360 controllers are the D-pad i cannot Jump Backwards or Forward when pressing the D-pad arrow up +arrow left, or Arrow up+arrow right is like stuck :( I cannot enjoy Fight games on this controller, and by playing with the Analog is terrible :( :c And this is a brand new controller i'm from Venezuela and i cannot RMA because is more expensive to me to send it back... than buying another one, and i dont have money lol :/
I did this yesterday, exactly how you did...followed everything. but for some reason my up button is not responding well and when I press up its acting likem im pressing right for some reason.
cool.. simple.. just, you dont need to say youll be right back.. i mean.. we can see there is time left and you know we didnt go into standby haha.. good stuff
***** The pegs are what hold it in place when you rotate it for the transformation. If you remove them it'll just spin in the hole. Two pegs might be enough to keep it together, but I'd rather not risk it.
Would try it but it sounds difficult - even though i follow electronics and science that seems quite difficult - i'll probably loose a finger too with a razer blade D:
you can do this on the original xbox (xbox1) controller as well; just take your time on the notches so the D-pad sits centered in the hole.... here welcome
even after using the official transforming d pad, it's still the weakest part of the 360 controller. i prefer how the dpad on the playstation controllers are close to your thumb and the left analog stick's adjacent to the right one. i always default back to the dpad when i'm given the option.
Again our apologies, I have directed a message at the user who got a bit wise with my users. Good luck... Also - I checked out some of the other videos, good job.
Seems too hard and risky. I'm really scared it'll break and if I do this I won't be able to return the controller. I read some people's dpad got screwed up in the comments.
great video I used a pumpkin carver to cut mine out lol and all u have to do with the d pad is jus cut off the pegs tht don't fit then u keep original slots
What are you talking about I haven't posted a link anywhere that I know of. I just made a video, it's not about who can do more an hour, or what ever your special tool is, I was showing people how to do it their self. I'm not a distributor or anything and have never even heard of your site to my knowledge. If I wanted to I would put it on a cnc and use endmills to cut it in about 30 seconds. If everybody had access to cncs I would make a video for those.
At 3:00 Instead of cutting out two more "notches" for the new d-pad that has four cut outs, can you just break off or remove the 2 other cut outs on the new d-pad so it would fit onto the controller?
And this method is clean if done correctly, and nobody has to send their controller to some random website, and can have it back together in about 30 minutes if they've never done it. I don't know what you charge but you probably are over priced, especially if you have to come comment on my video. next time you do make sure your are accusing the right person, because I've never heard of you. Good news is now I can make a new video telling ppl to avoid you.
+Lance Salamanca you did everything as described in video? I'm hesitating to do this myself now, because I'm not sure that even if I will not screw up, it will feel good. I mean, the d-pad itself looks good, but does it really fit and work fine in gamepad that isn't designed for it?
I play the old mortal kombat, streets of rage, and street fighter games. Although I prefer a sega genesis or sega saturn dpad for those kind of games or an arcade stick.
The 360 transforming d-pad just gets the job done, but also keeps the sega style if you choose to have it that way. To me playing games like that on a 360 are cool if you want achievments on sonic's ultimate genesis collection but tbh, I'd always prefer a genesis or saturn for those kind of games.

Still won't ultimately fix the horrid d-pad on the Xbox. Maybe they should take lessons from Sony or Nintendo.
Nash Stanton
Except it does fix it. Look at how wrong you are. Just look.

In this video I show you how to mod your normal Cbox 360 Controller, and install a transforming D-Pad.

As others have said, thanks. I bought three of these dpads not knowing I'd have to mod it. Followed your example and it's basically perfect.
I also did this but used an existing top shell from a controller with a rotating D-pad. The shell and the D-pad fit right into place on the USB controller and it's working perfectly. because you twist the dpad it would probly put more strain on the other two notchs and eventually snap it has 4 notches to give it more stability
You are right.. but coming to the real question, is the transforming dpad performance better than the old one?
I read many reviews but I wanted to test it myself.. unfortunately, the improvement on the transforming dpad is barely noticeable.. I am back to the PS3 controller and the MotionJoy..

your accent is the same as those characters in "django free" movie. sounds good to me. nice accent. i'm from brazil. peace. :)

How did u get a chatpad to work with ur pc? I've been told that there's no reliable way to really do it. Is there a program that you use?

had pleasure to hold one of silver ones in my hands... best mod ever...
How about cutting two edges from the Dpad? Instead of making two holes at the controller
Hey i did this on my controller but the dpad isnt respnding well to the up motion wants to go left or right, any suggestions?
thx! didn't know how to install them! Thx for the simpel and good explained video!
so what exactly does that transformer do?
A decent d-pad.
I'd like to know what this D-Pad does too?
It is a improvement to the stock 360 d pad. Plus gives you more options. One way makes it almost like a third joy stick. The second way more of a traditional d pad.

Just finished recording to day, should be up sometime this week.
I ordered a blue chrome transforming D-pad and realized (from my friend taking his apart) , that it doesn't fit. Thanks for the video.
It didnt click when i press the right direction. Up, down and left click however. Ive installed it correctly tho. Any tips
Got the exact same thing here, I even made sure that everything is 100% using a dremel and a ton of patience. Still works like a charm despite of that, but it's weird.
Thank the youtube gods for 2x speed.
the 1 dislike is the person who tried to do this by following the steps and they fucked up.

I fucked up my controler, did exactly what you said and the D-Pad doesn't work properly, cheers man.
Thanks soooo much! Very informational.
Who did you buy the d-pad from on ebay
I did this yesterday, exactly how you did...followed everything. but for some reason my up button is not responding well and when I press up its acting likem im pressing right for some reason.
Yep me too. Waste of time and money.
cool.. simple.. just, you dont need to say youll be right back.. i mean.. we can see there is time left and you know we didnt go into standby haha.. good stuff
1. It wasn`t a mod you bought a D-pad of ebay 2. we can`t understand you much 3. Your hand was in the way basically 2/3 of the video.
thanks this will help me a lot
Love your accent dude, nice video.
Is there any reason I can't just cut off the extra pegs on the dpad instead of cutting holes for them?
***** The pegs are what hold it in place when you rotate it for the transformation. If you remove them it'll just spin in the hole.
Two pegs might be enough to keep it together, but I'd rather not risk it.
Does this mess up the response of the dpad, since the original has screws holding it in, I imagine this jus drops down into the rubber pad.
I installed mine two days ago, works perfectly so far. Zero issues.
StealthEvolved how's it working now?
Just fine. I'm not on it all the time, but when I am I don't have any problems.
Would try it but it sounds difficult - even though i follow electronics and science that seems quite difficult - i'll probably loose a finger too with a razer blade D:
Excellent mod, excellent video, thanks buddy! :)

when are u going to do the demon install video

If you put the left analog in the d-pad spot, and the new d-pad in the left analog spot, does it fit?
No. It’s pretty obvious.
i'll try to somehow fumble a transforming d-pad into my onza, problem is it doesn't have this frame ring to hold the pad in place
gotta love them "cbox 360 controllers" lol
I kinda don't wanna fuck up my chrome paint is there any way to force it in?
What are you talking about I haven't posted a link anywhere that I know of. lmao just cut my finger .-.
At 3:00 Instead of cutting out two more "notches" for the new d-pad that has four cut outs, can you just break off or remove the 2 other cut outs on the new d-pad so it would fit onto the controller?
In that dpad, you're able to turn it. So, cutting the cut outs would reduce the dpad's life spam(sorry for my bad English)
That's what I did, works fine. I never spin it to transform it anyway
I just finished doing this to my controller, it worked perfectly just be careful.
Thanks!!!!! Helped a ton!!!! Works!!
will this work with the rockcandy controller
I realized that's what u most likely meant about two seconds after I sent it. lol thanks for the reply tho
Where am i going to get white sharpie

Whats better with this D-Pad?
everything
or................. instead of cutting the tab holes you can cut of the tabs?
I like it. Thanks.
Nice work man =).
Any one in 2021 lol
wicked tutorial, though it would save time to use a dremel like i do :P
very good if you cant access those kinda tools though, awesome!
I used the dremel, and it worked fine, thanks for the advice!!! ☺
So I did the mod to one of my controllers. It doesnt feel natural. Not sure if i did something wrong.
+Lance Salamanca Me too, i f*cked up mi controller lol
+Lance Salamanca you did everything as described in video? I'm hesitating to do this myself now, because I'm not sure that even if I will not screw up, it will feel good. I mean, the d-pad itself looks good, but does it really fit and work fine in gamepad that isn't designed for it?
+Huitapng in some places they sell xbox 360 case with the cutouts for the transforming d-pad, that would be a better to do.
+Huitapng I feel like I followed it pretty well. Didn't feel as good as I hoped it would.
+Saul Veloz Do you onow where I can get one?
I actually prefer this dpad over the xbox ones d-pad.
Then you clearly do not play fighting games.
Thanks!
Nice
search transform d-pad, ones for $4
I used this about a year ago and its great but did another today could see where I went wrong but I went from the top haha buggered the controller top :'( lol
look in descrip he said Cbox
Your method is Crude and dirty, but it does work. We designed a tool that does it for us in one shot - we can convert over 30 shells an hour. I also don't appreciate the link posted on our site to your crude method, I already told our customers that since we spent alot of money on a tool that does it CLEANLY AND QUICKLY we will offer the service cheaply but will not be sharing our tools and method, We have no problem with people DIY but your link on our wall was not the right place,
Or just use a cone cutter like I have been doing for 2 years :/
What's the point on that?
This mod has like no point am I right, like what difference does it really make to help you
If you prefer the transforming Dpad, it's worth it. I'm going to be taking apart my Halo 4 controller for the blue LED's, Dpad and sticks, then placing them inside a wired pad. The battery holder is fucked on my H4 and I needed to have it plugged in via USB anyway, so if anything I'm improving my new controller.
You clearly don't play games that require precies directional input ;) (aka any fighter)
it should.
0:38 m'kay?

the dpad was only $2
+Zike Gladion where did you buy it?
+Saul Veloz ebay, duh
It's 5 bucks, duh
+Saul Veloz 5bucks 2dollars
I get the same problem... :l
