I will stick to my Xbox Series X/S controller. You are the only RUclipsr I have seen that agrees that it is good. Everyone thinks I am silly for using it.
I hated the Hori Fighting Commander Octa, a massive downgrade compared to previous Fight Pad models which are now impossible to get at a good price being out of production in favour of these awful controllers. There is a firmware fix for the diagonals, but as a heavy handed person i found the dpad to be just awful regardless, getting jump inputs or down back inputs at the wrong time. Wish they would revert back to what is currently the Switch model of the controller, which is fantastic.
Later models of the Razer Raion actually have a pivot, but they fixed it without saying anything so you will have a hard time getting the correct version.
I am sick of controllers for fighting games because d-pad will wear out, i need to replace d-pad every 3/4 months, so for me i stick with official controllers like Playstation because you can find enough stock of d-pad rubber pieces No one in fighting game community talks about it, i mean the reviewer, they always claim: ''oh this controller is awesome/sucks for fighting game, d-pad is amazing/piece of shit'' I know Frame Counting is great reviewer but maybe he should put a warning ''no matter how good/worst controllers are, d-pad are meant to wear out'' Its same for joystick drift, i hate all those reviews screaming: ''Xbox Elite V2 is the best controller'', dudes, 160$ with drift joysticks are unacceptable There are unfamous controller like King Kong 2 Pro that use hall effect technology (aka no drift issues) I just hope next controllers use micro switches instead of rubber dome (yes Razer Raion is not very good fighting game controller and its shame they do not add a pivot for the dpad, apparently they fix it anonymously) PS: Frame Counting, if you are aware of controllers that dont use rubber underneath dpad, lemme know
yeah. one thing i see with a lot of controller reviews is praising its features but when it comes down to durability and longevity they basicallly have small opinons abt it since they never spend too much time on 1 controller. when it comes down on it the only features u should care about is how long can a controller take a beating.
I really liked the Sega Genesis 6-button controller and the Japanese (or U.S. model 2) Sega Saturn d-pads, but it seems like the modern 1st party controllers don't match those in d-pad quality.
Im one of those, who does play on 8bitso Pro controller. My only issue is not d-pad's "roughness" on a surface, but diagonal missinputs. I hope that it's just my "skill issue".
I concur on the Pro 2 G Classic. I used it a fair bit for platformers some may consider intense (say Hollow Knight) but there was no noticeable issue with it. Then came when I tried Tekken 7 and Skullgirls. When played Tekken 7, my left bumper came off from grazing against the controller too many times (probably an ergonomic thing but it broke clean off and I had to use plastic glue for it). I couldn't even open my controller up to do a repair. Maybe it was all that grime from sliding around (I have small hands so maybe its not ergonomic for me) Then, after playing Filia for only like 30 hours of using quarter circle inputs,, the D-Pad become pressed in to the point it 'clicks'. That itself hasn't been an issue but now it makes an all creaky kind of sound and feels mushy and really heavy to use, to the point I look at my left thumb and there is skin peeled off. Looking around for a new one, I probably am just going to go with the Dualshock 4. I do wonder if things would turn out better if I didn't get the G Classic but tbh I just feel its better to try something else.
I got a DualSense which I bought back when I played Rocket League and my previous controller died. It is good for racing games too, I can say that. However I agree that it is shit for fighting games. At first I thought it was me being bad but then I heard about people having similar issues. Diagonal input issue is a big problem. On top of that, I feel that dpad is rather rough which makes my thumb hurt after extended playtime. Though I haven't used a lot of controllers and don't have a very educated comparison, I feel that the rest of the controller is quite good and I like the design. All my issues lie with the dpad. I'll just stick with my keyboard for SF6 then.
My experience with the Pro 2 hasn't good... the DPAD started wiggling inside the cutout within the first 3 months, the analogs developed drift while using only the DPAD lol. Many people praise the Pro 2 for its battery life but keep in mind the controller is running on 250hz and has around 20ms on input lag compared to 3ms on DS4.
The Power A description is spot on, not only i had a sore thumb with the dpad, also it was so uncomfortable to play, definitely dont buy it for fighting games.
The Razer fight pad was a huge disappointment. I don’t no about the Hori OCTA fight pad for Xbox, but in my humble opinion, the PS5 version is perfect…I had no issues with it since getting it back in August…Still works like brand new.
4:22 This is such a pain in the ass. Whenever I try to do low forward, fireball instead I would do dp in the opponents face then proceed to lose 50%….so annoying. At first I thought it was me but I realized I never had that problem with my ps4 pad
I actually think the 8BitDo Sn30 Pro 2's D-Pad is technique-dependent. I don't move my thumb much, so I actually like it and have zero issues using it in even SNK games that have fuckass inputs. I can see why those who move their thumb a lot wouldn't like it - but since my thumb is always contacting the central divot at all times, I get to enjoy all its D-Pad has to offer. Meanwhile, the Raion is on the opposite side of that spectrum, where it's purely for moving the thumb a lot around the Pad instead of having it smooshed into the middle. Also somewhere in the middle is the Hori Octa's pad. It works for me, but the back bumpers are way too easy to depress.
I’m sorry but I have to disagree with your opinion about the Octa dpad. Once the firmware updated it works like a charm. I purchased the Xbox series after watching your video and I like it too. But the Octa is better for me. I have to admin that my Octa Xbox version dpad is better than my Octa PS5. I guess it’s a lottery at that stage but still a very good dpad.
Do take this list with a grain of salt. While a lot of people do think the PS5/Dualsense 5 controller is bad for fighting games, some notable pad players like Umisho (last year's Evo winner) and Hotashi (consistently one of the best NA players) both use the Dualsense 5.
I agree with everything you said, except for the 8bit Controller Pro 2. And I speak after testing all the pads in the video (thank you amazon). Hori and Razer the biggest disappointments, while surprisingly the 8bit controller was a pleasant discovery. I found that the cross-shaped dpad was the most suitable choice for my grip type, and the movement I make with my fingers. The best dpad I used was the one on the xbox series x controller, too bad it is positioned diagonally to the keys. As always it's a personal matter, I've been using the analogue stick for a long time to play games, and I played very well with it, so the only thing to do is to try out the pads.
I think the most important thing was the fact it was a G Classic, whose D-Pad differs slightly but noticeably from the other Pro 2, because of those 'grips' on the D-Pad.
The 8BitDo Pro 2 only has that weird D-Pad design on the GameBoy design, it is unique to every other one that they have. Get any other one besides the GameBoy one
One piece d-pad on ps3 was the perfect d-pad for me, i find had to play correctly with the tip of my thumb on a d-pad, except on the ps3 controller, probably cuz the dpad is so small
What controller do you think is the best? I've found the Pokken the best overall for years now, but I'd like something wireless and have been pretty dissappointed with my first-gen 8bitdo controllers that were using recycled 360 pads. I've heard some of the newer models are still able to get stuck and have accidental presses. I'd love a wireless Pokken controller with triggers and replaceable (AA/AAA?) batteries for the long-term.
So this means Dualshock 4 is still the best gamepad for fighting game until now. Thankfully my controller is Dualshock 4 also. If it has 6 face buttons then it will be perfect.
Honestly, d-pads are just poor design in general. We've learned that using separate buttons and separate fingers for directional inputs is superior. So lets apply what we've learned about button boxes to pads using PC software, and hope that pad manufacturers improve their controllers in the future so the PC software isn't required to fix it.
Completely agree about the Hori Octa, the absolutely messed the D-pad up, one of the worst, diagonals are very bad to do, the problem is the central pivot is too small, so when you push it down too hard gou end up depressing more than one direction at once. Again agreed about the Razer .. it’s worse still, D-pad is a flabby loose mess, i actually dislike the actuation of the face buttons also, they have huge travel with an irritating mechanical click, I find it amazing that a lot of these controllers meant to be for fighting games fail so hard in key areas
y'all... have you tried configuring the Octa ? you can modify the deadzones and activation zones for every direction. i agree about it being kinda bad out of the box, but please give the official configuration software a try.
@@mxBug I'll look into it if i ever mess around with it again, but for now it's one of the worst controllers I've ever used and that was after i updated the firmware to sort out the neutral tendencies when doing diagonals. I've switched to the 8bit Mega Drive/Saturn 6 button style controller as my backup for my old White Xbox Hori Fighting Commander.
For DS4 i bought seperate 3d printed buttons and installed them instead of stock DPad buttons. That makes playing MK 1 alot better and back forward commands are easier to input. I think i will buy DualSense and do the same in somwewhat future. But yeah Stock DPads are poop.
I was really dissapointed when i found out my 8bitdo pro 2 only had 100 hz polling rate, but i must say in the game i use it for, assetto corsa, i dont notice anything about the 10 ms inputlag compared to another controller i have that has 4 ms inputlag ( 250 hz polling rate). Is only 100hz polling rate a problem for competitive fighting games?
I have 8bitdo SN30 pro+ and Pro 2.The one model you complain on is the Classic Edition GameBoy look.Mine is Grey Edition on Pro 2 and Black on SN30 pro+, it's the best Directional Button in the World for me,Just like the Super Nintendo and Super Famicon,The very best when inputting Ryu and Ken's Shoryuken Very accurate command. I'm collecting 8bitdo controller because it's the best when it comes to directional buttons,I did have or own the Classic Edition GameBoy style,So I didn't experience the bad situation that you occur,And I don't like the Classic Edition it's ugly to me,But the Grey and Black Edition? Are good
Meanwhile some of the best sf6 pro players play on dualsense, one of the best giefs in the world things unironically that the Raion is the best thing ever. You also seem to ignore that some players dont use the dpad and play on analog which you didnt even care to touch. All in all, try different controls until you find something that fits you, third parties dont know sh1t about your personal preferences and sadly, the only way to know a control doesnt fit you is by playing on it
If you want to test whether gamepad good or not or at least d-pad in point of view hat watch for indicator when you press diognal several times keep pressing that slowly at least 10x times if indicator keep right on the spot that means you have good one , you want at least 7 out of 10 I own gamepad from japanese company called Elecom everytime i hit U+R no mistakes or miss tried like 10x times all record right
fun fact, everything bad for fighting game is good for me, lol coz i didnt play fighting games, have bad experiences with fighting games and controller of mine, it's snap, breaks within anger, nope nope nope, not worth it for me haha
I will stick to my Xbox Series X/S controller. You are the only RUclipsr I have seen that agrees that it is good. Everyone thinks I am silly for using it.
I hate Xbox controllers, but I know is good for FG cuz the clicly d-pad and good face buttons
I hated the Hori Fighting Commander Octa, a massive downgrade compared to previous Fight Pad models which are now impossible to get at a good price being out of production in favour of these awful controllers.

There are unfamous controller like King Kong 2 Pro that use hall effect technology (aka no drift issues)
I just hope next controllers use micro switches instead of rubber dome (yes Razer Raion is not very good fighting game controller and its shame they do not add a pivot for the dpad, apparently they fix it anonymously)

Definitely not a skill issue. I’m returning mine. The Dpad is god awful and I’m missing diagonals all the time.

You know, for the 8bitdo pro 2.
I literally changed the D-pad to the ones with the arrows. They came from my old broken SF30 pro. It's better now xD
That's a great idea!
@@FrameCounting i love customizing my stuff haha
the only 8bitdo pro 2 that has that weird dpad is the gameboy one, the others are normal
the pro 2 only has that weird textured dpad on the classic g color version, the gray variant just has a normal textured dpad
i wish u tried these controllers on actual games cuz i do appreciate the physical testing, but the game testing is as important.
Fighting games are not actual games? 😲
Do take this list with a grain of salt. While a lot of people do think the PS5/Dualsense 5 controller is bad for fighting games, some notable pad players like Umisho (last year's Evo winner) and Hotashi (consistently one of the best NA players) both use the Dualsense 5.
Nah not for me. Ps5 controller not well thought out for fighting games. For Astro's Playroom, its great! ;)
Dual Sense is perfect for Strive, I'd never pulled out my other sticks/leverless controllers to play/test it.
I’m pretty sure the bottom trigger on the Hori was meant to use with your middle finger, not moving your index finger from one to the other…
so a Brook Converter with a XBOX Elite 2 controller is my best option?
Vader 3/apex 4 have perfect dpad. Although it's basically elite dpad.
What about the Nintendo Pro Controller?
Which controller would you recommend for 2D fighters on the PS5? I'm not willing to use the PS4 version of games like GGST / DNF
Dualsense edge or victix, shame ps5 users have to consider the expensive options
I agree with everything you said, except for the 8bit Controller Pro 2.

The stick is great if that’s the only thing you use
The 8BitDo Pro 2 only has that weird D-Pad design on the GameBoy design, it is unique to every other one that they have. Get any other one besides the GameBoy one
I've had the Hori Fighting Commander Octa or 2 weeks now. Didn't have issues hitting diagonals with it.
I'm still buying a Victrix Pro FS in 2 weeks..
Can we get an update? What are your thoughts on the two
How is it
My problem with ps5 controller is the ghost inputs of R1 when i just pressed R.T
One piece d-pad on ps3 was the perfect d-pad for me, i find had to play correctly with the tip of my thumb on a d-pad, except on the ps3 controller, probably cuz the dpad is so small

How are those buttons shaped?
I tried the ps5 controller once and I can barely do qcf or dragonpunch. I can do those inputs much more consistently with ds4 controller
You can barely do diagonals with the D-Pad on the otherwise excellent Gamesir G7, I couldn't play DJ Max with it because of this.

Beitong Asura Pro Plus for the PS5....... Someday in 2026 Lol
Personally I didn’t mind the dual sense while using it in 2D fighters but it did took awhile to adjust from the ds4 pad.
Razer Raion has an updated version that has the pivot.
what about the pro 2 without the ridges in the dpad ,would it still be bad?
Good

ps5 solid for everything but fighting games.-SF6 pro players
My series x controller with the lifted dpad SUCKS. I play mortal kombat x and i cant do any of my instant airs and it sucks
Shit reviews I agree the Razer controler isnt good but it's not for the reasons you mention.
I use the anolog sticks for fighting games especially platform fighters no need for all the DPAD flaw nonesense as much😂
Me deu a entender que o 8bitdo pro 2 é o melhor pela sua análise no vídeo .
PS5 controller is horrible for marvel vs capcom... horrible!
