Great video. I have an A7III and use it exclusively for photos, so this was a good video for me in that it seems most of the improvements in the A7IV are geared towards video. I'd like a higher resolution screen and viewfinder, and the locking/tracking AF is an enticing feature, but it seems too little to convince me to pay the price for a new body.
Happy new year! Great review as always, man ;) I see the Tamron 28-75G2 in your footage...is there a review coming in the pipes? :) I'm really curious about this one. I Just got a A7RIII to replace my A7III and I'm seeing the limitations of the original 28-75.
You are right about flippy screens. I used to love them but I am starting to come around. It really is annoying to use if you are behind the camera, and it feels like a big point of failure on my A7SIII. I would rather just use the app if I need to record myself if it meant eliminating that weak point. Maybe Sony will go back, but somehow I doubt it.
Funny how people can have such different opinions about a screen. For me the flippy screen is one of th reasons I am looking into this camera. I do a lot of weird/low angle macro work and for that a flippy screen is a must have. An A7R with flippy screen would be my ideal camera.
Not go back, they must engineer a hybrid screen. I can’t believe we can’t get a z9/fuji screen like with sone kind of hinge to rotate it in case needed( in my case, never)
Thanks for a great comparison. If I was new to Sony, the A7IV is worth every penny. All the upgrades combined makes the Sony A7IV a much easier and pleasant camera to use with better results. If I already owned an A73, then maybe the money would be better spent on a more specialized camera such as an A7R or A7S. This camera will sell well for Sony I believe. One big factor is which lens you bolt onto these bodies. Both cameras deserve the best lens one can afford. Happy New Year!! I look forward to what you have in mind for us in this new year.
Thanks for the review! I would love to see a comparison between the A74 and A7R3/A. I can pretty much guess the conclusions from your other videos but nonetheless am interested. I am a long-term A7R3 user since its first release and didn't go for the A7R4 due to the step back in noise performance and not needing more resolution. The A74 seems to be the only way to get the advantages of the new Sony bodies in terms of handling and AF without having to accept worse noise performance.
I will do that later on. There is definitely no step back in terms of the sensor performance with A7R IV, I have tested them side-by-side. A7 IV, A7R III and A7R IV offer identical ISO performance after the downsampling.
That is where I am. In this video, the A7III has the green tracking square around the ye in stills mode. Does the A7RIIIa not have eye tracking in stills?
@@TheHybridShooter That is what I thought yet the title green square only lights up when the shutter is half pressed, finds an eye then disappears. The bigger grey face square does track the face. Am I doing something wrong?

i bought the A7c as a transition camera from panasonic gh5 (that broke) to the sony lens system. Now that i have the A7 iV i have to say it is a BIG improvement over the A7c image quality and usability (for video). and if you use compact lenses the size and weight differences a negligible. for photos it is worth the upgrade, for video it is a no brainer (for me)
Great comparison! You mentioned the difference in AWB, does that mean that Sony fixed problems with green/yellow tint (AWB erroring towards green/yellow) that often happened with A7 III in bad lighting situations? That was IMHO the biggest culprit that caused bad SOOC colors with A7 III (along with bad Lightroom profiles as well).
Thank you! That depends on the specific case. As I have mentioned the differences are pretty minor, since the A7 III was already one of the most color accurate cameras on the market. Specific situations with skin tones are difficult for any camera. Using WB pre-sets actually helps a lot.
@@TheHybridShooter yeah WB preset are pretty much spot on, but when I cross compared my Fuji X-T3 and Sony A7 III, Fuji AWB was often more reliable and without ugly green/yellow shifts. I'm curious if that's improved on A7 IV

I mostly do landscape and real estate type photos with the occasional animals like birds and very little video. Really having a tough time figuring out which direction to go.
I switched from Nikon to Sony. I had the z6 and can say it’s a good camera. But the a74 is a lot better and I’m happy I switched. Not sure if you do video but the upgrades makes the a74 a lot better. Being able to do 10bit 422 color in camera and not having to go to the atomos ninja is big. Slog 3 I have found so much easier to correct and look natural vs nlog. Video quality between both cameras really is not on the same playing field I feel. Autofocus is light years better then Nikon and even also after the Nikon update. Customization that the Sony gives you is great and convenient also. 4k coming out of the Sony is a lot better as well. Being that we do real estate, I would recommend the laowa 9mm 2.8 for your wide slow motion. Gives you a 14mm look on the 4k 60. Sonys new color science has made a world of difference. I would say rent them and try them out. Just my 2 cents but it’s how I feel after using both systems.
@@lightlinemedia5775 Thanks for the info. I am more of a prosumer kind of guy that does little to no video but I want something decent in case I ever do. I am leaning towards getting the A7iii or IV after all my research this weekend. I also have owned several other Canons and Sonys over the years and going through all my photos I have printed out I found that I tend to prefer my Sony ones much more. One of my favorite photos ever was done with a Sony a5100 with the kit lens and another with the A7II with the kit lens. This time I am going to get the Tamron 28-75 to go with the body. I just really hate the RP, haven't liked it once since I have owned it, won't be sad to see it go.
Very nice comparison, bravo.I have a7iii but i think i shall wait for fuji to make the next move with xh2 or xt5 ,and i think with an improvement on autofocus and propably adding 10 bit 4-2-2 ,will be a strong competitor for Sony
Thank you for an excellent breakdown of both cameras ! I wanted to ask if you would know whether the A7IV's IBIS works in tandem with the image stabilization on Sony lenses ? I can't seem to find any information about it, I am thinking of picking up a 24-105 f4 OSS for shooting video on the A7IV. Would you also happen to know if the combined image stabilization from the lens and IBIS is better on the A7IV than the A7III ?
Yes, IBIS and OIS work together. Combined stabilization will also be better with A7 IV, but the difference will be decreasing at longer focal lengths, where the lens stabilization is more effective.
Excellent comparaison...thanks. Not sure you mentioned that the 10 fps drops significantly to 6 fps if you shoot lossless raw. Makes an impact for sport shooters. BTW, what is your editing software? Not sure I recognize the interface... Thanks again
@@TheHybridShooter ohh ok! I thought they would be a little different. I feel more comfortable now to think about a7IV as a b cam because other reviewers also say the colours are not greatly different.
I don’t think that it is available on the A7 IV, but even if it was, I do not recommend using that feature on any camera. Shutter is the most sensitive part of the camera and the dust will eventually end up on the sensor anyway.

Hello, loved your videos and I am your new subscriber…I am new in photography and I want to make short cinematic videos , vlogs and also want to take some great pictures…I want the best both video & photo camera …which one do you suggest if budget is between 3000-5500rs …can you recommend 2-3 options …I have shortlisted Sony A7 III / Sony A7 IV/ Sony A7R III / SONY A7S III
I was ro write I’m part of the minority here complaining about the flipping screen, but we are in the same boat! :). I wish they could have engineer a real hybrid screen and not just opted for a videographer one
I just can´t decide. Stil have the A7 ii, i want to Upgrade to one of those both, i could afford the IV but on the other side, if i buy the III i have money left for another lens.
I don't know, you would have to ask Sony. 24MP camera with 4K 120p will either cost more than 6K or completely kill A7S III, so I am not very optimistic about that.
I use my camera only for photography… is the colour science better enough to upgrade from a73 to a74? Also can we use v60 cards on a74 just for photography instead of cfx.
I would say no. A7 IV uses different user interface and the handling is quite different, especially for hybrid use, so I would recommend paying extra for second A7 IV.
mitchellkphotos prefer the a7III with tilt screen when photographing people. I too think the tilt screen was why the Associated Press went for Sony, so I think we'll never see a flip out screen on higher models.
Good video👍🏻 I’d like to ask that… If I’ve enough budget to buy an a7iv but I wanna save some money to buy a better lens… so I‘m hesitating if I should go for an a7iii🤨 Do you think that the a7iii is still worth buying?
@@TheHybridShooter Thankyou sm for replying.. i ofcourse want to invest in lenses in near future. a7iii is good but i'm afraid to invest in old body so i'm pushing for a7iv but i can only afford it with kit lens. i was thinking to get some budget friendly prime lenses also for a7iv.
@@TheHybridShooter can you give me some scenarios? Would you suggest getting one with a fan built in instead? If so which Sony camera should I purchase?
I feel like for the future Sony A2 they should pull a feather out of Panasonic's cap and do a tilty flippy screen, which will satisfy all pros who get it, whether they do photos or video.
Sony would have to make it about 1/3 of Panasonic's size, S1H display unit is huge. Otherwise, I would even prefer rotating screen over that mechanism. I also wouldn't say that it is a question of photo or video, it is more about being behind the camera or in front of the camera.
@@TheHybridShooter that actually makes sense. If Sony made larger bodies like the Eos R3 and S1H and Z9, then there would be space. The flip screen always seems flimsier than the tilt screens but better for RUclips. The tilt screen on my Sony A7RIV feels very sturdy, making me prefer them for behind the camera.
Sony can put all of the technology to A1 sized body, so I don't think that they are interested in making larger cameras. 2-way tilting screen is the best option IMO. Rotating screens are OK on A7C and ZV series which are intended for RUclips.
@@TheHybridShooter the Fuji style screen? I have never used one like that myself but I’ve heard that they’re the best for photos since they don’t get in the way and can be used for vertical shooting.
Good summary, thank you. Strongly disagree on the flip screen. I get that it might be less durable and it's a little fiddly. However, for photo it's a lot more usable for portrait orientation (though a screen like the Nikon Z9 might be better yet). For video, I find the flip screen to be a huge upgrade when the camera is mounted on a gimbal. I don't like to bother with an external monitor and having the built-in screen on the side is a huge plus for me. I've had the camera for about a week and in my opinion the biggest weakpoint is the rolling shutter. Then comes the screen: a 3" screen in 2021 is pathetic, the flip screen should have at least been without bezels. I shoot at a lot of different angles and I find myself using the screen more often than the viewfinder. It's so much more pleasant to take a photo on a phone these days...
Sure, no problem. Rotating screens have some advantages in specific situations, but IMO those are not even close to outweighing the negatives that I have described here: ruclips.net/video/lWzkQER21RE/видео.html The more I use rotating screens, the less I like them :) 2-way tilting screen is the best option IMO. The rolling shutter is not a issue at all in reasonable use cases, I have talked about that in my A7 IV review. It gets mentioned a lot in initial reviews and then you won't hear about it for the next 3 years, like with A7 III or even EOS R6 which has significantly worse rolling shutter. Larger display situation is not that simple, due to limited space, as demonstrated with Fuji X-T200.
@@TheHybridShooter I respect your opinion. I don't feel like the alignment is an issue for me personally and I have my strap mounted on a bottom plate so that is fine too (Falcam Ulanzi, awesome system btw). Also I always balance my gimbal with the screen flipped out. I can definitely understand that if you have a cage, if you want to monitor your audio, or want to use the HDMI, the flip screen is in the way. In fact, the audio monitoring is probably the only thing that might negatively impact my personal use case (I don't think the doors are removable, are they?). But when you start using hdmi and monitor your audio, this is when you might want to start using an external monitor and so the flip screen because less of a problem, don't you think? I agree that the rolling shutter is not an issue in a lot of cases. I don't do a lot of whip pans and I suppose I'll use the crop mode when I do. It's a real issue in my opinion for hand held walking shots. It can really distort the image when there is big shake. I almost always use a gimbal for walking shots, but I did want to try some of that movie shake, but I don't think it's possible with this camera (except maybe when using crop mode). And I don't think digital Steadyshot can fix this. In fact I don't like digital stabilization because it has blur artifacts when using anything close to a 180 shutter angle.
Audio monitoring and HDMI output is just one of many issues that I am experiencing with rotating screen, so not really, that doesn't make it less of a problem for me. Active mode helps a lot with walking shots. If you want usable handheld look, you generally need some kind of rig to stabilize the setup. Hand-held walking shots are a bad idea IMO with any mirrorless camera due to the form factor, not because of the rolling shutter. You can always fix the rolling shutter in post. So far, I haven't noticed any issues with digital stabilization on Sony cameras.
@@TheHybridShooter I think you're right that handheld walking shots are bad regardless. I don't know that you can fix rolling shutter effect on vertical shake as it can actually squeeze the image. My take on digital stabilization is it will always generate blur artifacts when using slower shutter speeds. Simply because the sensor captures the blur linked to physical movement and then the active stabilization replaces the image. So the subject appears to not move in the frame, but it might be blurry for a few frames. This is probably not a problem for vlogging etc.

I just really hate the RP, haven't liked it once since I have owned it, won't be sad to see it go.
great video. Thanks for sharing bro
Thanks for the video. What kind of mount do you use at 8:19?
Thanks for the video.Could you pls compare Canon R8 with Sony A7iii. It would be very helpful.
You’re welcome! Unfortunately not, I don’t have R8.
Very nice comparison, bravo.I have a7iii but i think i shall wait for fuji to make the next move with xh2 or xt5 ,and i think with an improvement on autofocus and propably adding 10 bit 4-2-2 ,will be a strong competitor for Sony
That mostly depends on the format, if the full frame isn't necessary for you, it may be a good alternative.
love your stuff. thanks for this, pozdravujem rodnu hrudu :)
Ďakujem, aj ja pozdravujem :)
@@TheHybridShooter Thank you so much for your reply ! Looking forward to your future videos !

Hello from Cambodia 🇰🇭 I see have Angkor wat Temple ♥️🙏🏻
Yeah A7IV, its great to have 10bit 422 4k but do we have option to shoot 8bit 4k ?? Just when we need more storage in memory cards..
Yes, there are various options with lower bit-rates.
Can u compare a7iv vs a7R iv for photography such as how much can u crop with a7riv compare to the a7iv
Excellent comparaison...thanks. Not sure you mentioned that the 10 fps drops significantly to 6 fps if you shoot lossless raw. Makes an impact for sport shooters.
BTW, what is your editing software? Not sure I recognize the interface...
Thanks again
Hi! I believe it’s Adobe Lightroom
Would you say low light iso is similar to each other or is 1 better at higher iso? Thanks in advance.
As you can see in the video, it is the same.
Which gives better skin tones a7Siii or a7IV? In your opinion.
A7 IV and A7S III colors seem to be identical.
@@TheHybridShooter ohh ok! I thought they would be a little different. I feel more comfortable now to think about a7IV as a b cam because other reviewers also say the colours are not greatly different.
nice review thank you.
About the AA filter, it is like the R ones then?. Because that will make it awesome for my M mount lenses
Yes, although it is not great for M-mount lenses, those work better with AA filter which partially simulates filmic look.
One more advantage of A7IV is the anti dust function when changing lenses by closing the shutter when powered off.
I don’t think that it is available on the A7 IV, but even if it was, I do not recommend using that feature on any camera.
Shutter is the most sensitive part of the camera and the dust will eventually end up on the sensor anyway.
@@TheHybridShooter anti dust function have to be turned on in the menu 51 of 51 the last setting in camera, as long you do not touch the shutter it'll be fine.
@@Jameshhl Dust on the sensor is definitely more fine than in the shutter mechanism. It is a very bad idea.
I only shoot stills. Would it make sense to move up from the A7iii?
Depends on your expectations, A7 IV definitely offers a lot upgrades for stills photographers.
So helpful!
Depends on your future investments, A7 IV is a lot more futureproof platform, so it is a better choice in the long term.
Why cannot sony use the screen style from Sony A99ii. Its good for Photo & stills. Now waiting fir an 24 MP 4k120(no crop) maybe an A9m3
I don't know, you would have to ask Sony. 24MP camera with 4K 120p will either cost more than 6K or completely kill A7S III, so I am not very optimistic about that.
Man that's my question for years now! I hope they stop this silly flippy screen in every model other than a7c and ZV series.
So basically if you're shooting video get the A7IV
It is a bit more complicated than that.
I use my camera only for photography… is the colour science better enough to upgrade from a73 to a74? Also can we use v60 cards on a74 just for photography instead of cfx.
The cooler science was already more than good enough with A7 III, so probably not. Yes, you can use V60.
@@TheHybridShooter thank you 🙏😇🙏
Hi will the a7IV work will with Lieca lens? please let me know, thank you very much.
Some Leica lenses work with adapter.
Just bought this camera 😍 Sony a7iv
I need a second body for the a7iv. I am a hybrid shooter! Do you think that the A7iii would be a good backup / second body?
I would say no. A7 IV uses different user interface and the handling is quite different, especially for hybrid use, so I would recommend paying extra for second A7 IV.
Is that huge of a difference? The handling and the user interface?
@minasladomenos1141 The old UI is completely different. If you are already used to the new one, there is no point learning the old one.
@@TheHybridShooter I can find a7iii new for 1.000 euro! So cheap! A7iv is doublethe price, for a second body
mitchellkphotos prefer the a7III with tilt screen when photographing people. I too think the tilt screen was why the Associated Press went for Sony, so I think we'll never see a flip out screen on higher models.
Good video👍🏻 I’d like to ask that…
If I’ve enough budget to buy an a7iv
but I wanna save some money to buy a better lens…
so I‘m hesitating if I should go for an a7iii🤨
Do you think that the a7iii is still worth buying?
If you have enough budget bro go A7 iv tho
my opinion is if you are focused on photo get the A7iii. if you do video go to A7iv
very useful video, can you tell me if switching from PAL to NTSC you have to reset the se as on a73? thank you
Unfortunately, yes.
@@TheHybridShooter thank you
Can you help me decide? should i go sony a7iii with sigma 24-70 or sony a7iv with kit lens?
Depends on whether you intend to invest more in lenses in the future or you want to stay with camera + 1 lens setup.
@@Shusan A7 IV is a better investment in that case.
How many continuous recording minutes can you get from the Sony 4 before it overheats?
Depends on the temperature of the environment.
@@TheHybridShooter can you give me some scenarios? Would you suggest getting one with a fan built in instead? If so which Sony camera should I purchase?
Great comparison, whell done 👍
Thank you!
I literally ordered the a7iv yesterday from B&H. Thanks for this vid!
Always my pleasure!
A great video and I have received the camera as well, really satisfied and happy to be part of Sony Mirrorless family.... a great unboxing video
Thank you, although this is definitely not an unboxing video :)
I'm going to buy the a7iii in 2023 . Still a great buy?
I wouldn't describe it as a "great buy" but it is a solid option in that price range.
Well done!
Thank you!
you are the best! hello from Ukraine
Thank you! Glory to Ukraine!
hopefully A7R V dont have that flipout screen
I had to double tap for a revisit
Digital stabilization just moves the image around, it doesn’t replace it, so it shouldn’t affect the motion blur any way.
