    Hey Nick, I'm always glad to see you giving Grape Ivy its dues because so few people give it the time of day. I have noticed Amanda from Planterina bringing it up every now and then lately, so hopefully between the two of you the word will get out. This plant used to be quite popular because it's in the background of just about every old movie, and it deserves to be again!

    I literally JUST bought a new 4” peperomia tetragona like 30 minutes ago at one of my favorite plant markets in Union Square in NYC. It was probably my favorite plant and it was thriving for 2 years until it suddenly shriveled up and dropped all its leaves recently 😢 so glad I have your stamp of approval on my purchase!

    The genus _Kalanchoe_ got its name from the Chinese name reported in 1704 as "Kalanchauhuy". There is some debate about the first part but the ending is almost certainly 菜, pronounced "choi" in Cantonese and meaning vegetable/plant. The same word used for vegetables like bok choy (or pak choi) and choy sum. So the best pronunciation would be Car-lan-choi or Ka-lan-choi.
    The Kalankoee pronunciation comes from a mistaken presumption that the name is from Greek.

    • @grat2010
      @grat2010 2 года назад +1

      That's very interesting. I'm one to pronounce it like it's Greek but only because I think it's fun to say 🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @pattheplanter
      @pattheplanter 2 года назад

      @@grat2010 Pronouncing the end in Cantonese(ish) is more fun. You get a rising tone and it is almost choi-ee.

    Love my rhipsalis, I got it from a a neighbor who was moving out this year. If flowered over the winter! If you can get a holiday cactus to flower, treat your rhipsalis the same and it should flower too.

    Funny how you say Kalanchoe are practically un-killable LOL I've never been able to keep one alive until recently! Maybe it was due to the fact that I was in Northern Ontario so it was not the best zone, but more likely it's due to the fact that I hadn't realized they are a succulent. I'm now in Southeastern Ontario and keep my kalanchoe in a clay pot and relatively dry and it is thriving! Ahh all the planty things to learn :)

    Thank you so much for featuring the kalachoe fedtschenkoi. I have been trying to identify my plant for a year. None of the online images that I have viewed of that plant have the 20 inch trails and numerous aerial roots of my plant. I have styled mine in a China pot inserted into a 14 inch tall terra cotta wine chiller. It looks great and is one of my favorites. Have also propagated a few more.

    Oak leaf ivy, yes! The one I have is beautiful and it almost was dead a year ago….. English ivy on the other hand, die in my arms…. So I stopped buying them,,,gave up. I was hoping I would hear something about propagating the oak leaf ivy though. I’d like to cut mine back and make some new plants. 🤷🏼‍♀️

      If it's too wet, take it out of its pot, dust off soil, and cut out the rotten (black soggy mushy) roots, and use new soil in a new pot or sanitize the old one pot.
      If it's too dry, it might be too late but cut off almost all the foliage and keep watering the stump and roots. Or salvage whatever green growth is still healthy and propagate it.
      Good luck!
