I’m so glad you said this! I live out in rural Illinois, 45 minutes from anything. Any time I’ve had plants to sell or give away on Facebook, people don’t want to come out here! I’ve even said, like, “come to this Walmart at 1pm if you want these plants” and still people say, “oh but can you come meet me here Tuesday at 5pm?” Etc. like nooo I can not spend $125 in gas to run crappy $5 plants all over the countryside. Lol! Sometimes it’s more sustainable to throw them out.
I agree. I take to work and leave in the break room. They go quickly. It’s quit a workout to walk with plants and a lunch bag. Just glad someone else will be happy.🪴💚

The side camera, very nice little detail you've added for that bit of Nick spice we love! Your energy is contagious, I'll be carrying it with me through the day. What a great video ❤
This was the video we needed! Love how it was filmed and edited. Not to mention everyone needs to be reminded it’s ok to throw plants away! Plant keeping is about enjoyment not stress!
Thank you for sharing this. I have a bunch of plants waiting for me to finally let them go and I’ve been avoiding it because of guilt. Gonna tackle this today!
I love getting rid of clutter and things that just don't bring joy, good for you! My motto is, "life is too short to wear an itchy sweater" and this is the perfect representation of that :)
Crotons have to be the worst plant to have indoors. I took one in when a friend was going to compost it. It looked stupid and leggy, but I held onto it for over a year out of guilt. Finally threw it out after it got spider mites for the third time.
Sometimes after throwing away a plant, I feel bad about it but after two days I’ve already forgotten it. Lol. I guess I wasn’t as attached as I thought.
I gave away 150 healthy beautiful plants last year, babies, doubles, plants that just didn't make my heart sing any longer - Now it's go time, I'm chucking what ever is left that doesn't make me smile or is giving me problems. I need to help the landfill trash decompose with more organic materials! 😘
I have a spot in my yard called survivor Island where I out all my plants that wither aren't making it no mater what. Some are still here some aren't and got voted off. 😅
I threw away my staghorn fern and a goldfish plant after finding them infected with scale. I could have treated them but now that I have a little kiddo it's too much for me right now. It made me sad throwing them out but your video made me feel better.
Thank you! I really struggle with this. There was one plant I just hated, but instead of tossing it, I snipped it into 4 cuttings and put them in water. And guess what…I ended up with 4 rooted cuttings I hated!
I have had to do this and even though it’s hard I felt better afterwards. And it’s not always that easy to find people to take every frikin plant you need to get rid of. Especially when you need them to go away immediately for your mental health. I think the plant community needs to be more accepting in general.
You have motivated me to look through my plants today to purge those sad, half dead ones as well as those that just don’t excite me anymore. I like the idea of having fewer plants that I will give better care to and appreciate more. Happy New Year!
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I'm doing the same thing with my plant collection and feel good about it. In the past I've always felt sad and guilty throwing away my babies. I am able to compost mine so that makes it a little easier. I can't for the life of me grow philodendrens of any kind so today out they go! Last summer I got rid of half of my hoya collection due to mealy bug infestation. I fought the good battle for 3 years and surrendered. It's very freeing to get rid of the ones that don't bring you joy. Thanks for making me feel better about purging. Love your sense of humor!
I hear you, Nick! My plants know that they thrive/survive or they're off to the composter. Fussy plants don't even get a three strikes grace in my house. Happy New Year!
I just got rid of a few Alocasias that had spidermites and they kept coming back... I just got so tired of the constant battle and the leaves were starting to look very sad. It felt so good afterwards, like a breath of fresh air, and I collected lots of corms!
OMG, I literally just posted this same sentiment this morning and your video came up in my feed. Confirmation. I'm convinced there is universal energy of empowerment to purge the things that are not serving you well. I always enjoy your videos. Happy New Year.
Absolutely LOVED your video. Missed Nick’s when he posted, but caught yours. It is definitely this year’s energy to purge stress. Thanks for your support, Nick & Yvette!
I used tontry to nurse EVERYTHING back to health, but I just don't have the patience for sickly plants now. I went through my collection twice this summer and threw out everything that was slowly dying.
This was new way of filming/editing, is cracking me up! Love it! I also love how calm you are about a pest infestation. I would be freaking out from mealy bugs or spider mites. Not you, just cool, calm and collected. Another great video Nick 👍🏽
Well every decision you make in life can possibly effect other humans. So it’s really not very smart or nice to say “It’s my life so I can do what I want” when in fact throwing everything away does in fact affect the planet which in turn affects every human on the planet. So there’s that. I personally would rather do the right thing and take care to do things right in the first place. Because not only will it help humanity in the long run but it also helps me because well...I’m a human. 😅
Heya Nick. Here's to the New Year. May she be better than 2023! My depression finally got to a point it affected my collection. I'm giving a bunch away and selling some. I feel bad as I lost some, but such is life..doing my best. Thanks for a great video!
I've always liked how you show all sides to plant ownership! I have done some plant purging in the past few months. Like you I've had some poor luck with philodendrons (and monsteras, unfortunately). They really struggle; even with grow lights and humidifiers I feel like they can't survive the long, dry, dark winters I have. Same with begonias, as much as I love them. Hoyas and succulents are much more forgiving to me. So many plants/dirt have become compost in my front garden, so it's all okay!
I've thrown out plants that have severe scale and mealy bug infestations. 1 to stop the spread to my other plants, and 2 because I don't have the space to isolate them. I usually chuck them into the green wheelie bin for compost.
Thanks so much for saying what we all needed to hear!! That said for plants with insect issues even pretty bad issues, neem oil works really well!for getting rid of them! You always make me laugh bc what you say is true! 😂

Nick I'm traumatized. 😅 I purge plants, just not all at once like that. I'm glad you've eased your stress and can now enjoy the plants that you're loving on. 💚😊
Love the purge! Recently did the same and it felt so good...even freed up a few Berg pots as well. How about as a followup video tell us your current favs and the ones that are least susceptible to pests. Simplifying my plant collection brought me joy!
If you love something, let it go. 😢 The sweating issue is probably hyper-hydrosis. If you need to wear a tux, or dress formally for an important event, it can be embarrassing, especially if you will be in photographs and/or videos. A dermatologist can give you some underarm Botox shots that should prevent it for 8-12 weeks. Then you can dance your heart out. ❤ You’ll want to schedule the shots a few weeks before the event, as it takes time to work. Looking forward to your next video. 😺✌️
NP Really enjoyed your video....I live in one bedroom apt (Austin) and have hmmmm, 45-50 plants.....I have to go thru purges every so often! Nice to see Im not the only one..... I try to give away, but I do have high anxiety in letting go. Plus the damn cost of terra cotta I usually recycle to myself. Thnx for all you videos! CCC Austin, TX
I can’t even articulate how much I enjoyed this video (so why am I leaving a comment is a good ass question) but thank you!!! Needed this on this day. 😂🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
I usually skip your videos but now I won’t, you’re so funny and relatable. Thank you for the content, much appreciated. Sad seeing that gloriosum go in the trash
I never feel guilty purging whether its plants, clothes, shoes, my own drawings anything. Part of having peace in my life is to make life easier. I am definitely not someone that goes out of their way to do anything. Thanks for this video. 😅
This was an awesome video! I love a good purge of anything!! Its very therapeutic! And i for sure have some plants that no longer bring me joy and should meet the trash!! I felt the weight lift off your shoulders in this video!! Love it!❤
You know the same way I decide to throw out a lipstick is the same way I toss a plant. Holy Hoya h*ll that was like a space cruiser of Mealy's that was a Happy Mealy bug meal of a plant minus the toy. I had this moment myself in Nov. where I threw out 6 plants that just hated the conditions of my home. This video made me laugh :)
I love the motivation given with the beginning dialogue (Instant subscription lol) And cleaning out old plants to make room for the new ones for the new year!! Thanks so much and Keep planting!!! 🙌🍃🪴🙏🌱
I’ve started doing the same! I often take cuttings (if there is anything viable) but I don’t hang on to strugglers as long as I used to. Thank you for showing even the professionals have struggles!!
Love this. I just tossed a pilea and it's daughter over the bank just because they grew weird, dropping leaves constantly, and I felt really good about it. Go Nick! Don't feel like you need to justify anything!
Gurl yasssss!! Saying the stuff no one else admits to! I've been getting rid of stuff that depresses me or makes me anxious, asking the same questions you're asking, "does this spark joy?". No, it makes me sad and anxious and I just don't need that. Thank you so much for making this video!
I've been downsizing as well as focusing on the plants that bring me joy. Dracaena + snake plants, oxalis, kalanchoe, aglaonema Siam Red, and orchids bring me the most joy. I spend most of my time in my bedroom, so it's filled with blooming orchids, my biggest snake plant bloomed 2x in 2023, and my Ishida have been in bloom nonstop for a year. I also have my indoor tomato plant that is over a year old and has never stopped producing new leaves and fruit. Purging is hard, but it does open up space and planters.
As I'm watching I'm looking at my plants saying who can I combine and who can I get rid of and who has pests. Ty Nick. I do feel guilty when a plant has unloved itself but it is life and just learn from the experience and either try again or don't. I think that's why majority of what I have is snake plants, variety of pothos and spider plants and orchids and monsters delicious and string of turtles and a micans. It's a lot to remember who needs what and when. Now that I mention it. I should write it done. Time to journal in the plant book.😊 Happy new year!!!!
Happy for you Nick, must feel great when you look around now. Love your energy. Hope 2024 bring you good health and happiness. Can’t wait to see your next videos
Last week I got rid of my 2 struggling calatheas (never again), philodendron prince of orange and banana plant (this one because of stubborn spider mites). Pink and white princess have time to sort out themselves or they’ll next. You do what you have to do.
I have the 3x rule too! If I can’t keep it alive, try to salvage it, I’ll buy another if I really like it. But if that one dies I’m done with it. And trying to reroot it helps slow me down from impulse buying.
I am doing a plant purge too. Anything that has been struggling to live or has bugs is gone! I’ve also been annoyed with philodendrons, they are thrip magnets!
I am absolutely loving this type of video. I don’t understand why ppl are upset about purging plants we fall out of love with our clothes, bags shoes even our partners 😅 I went through a crazy phase of succulents addiction now I don’t even want one near me 😂
I'm about to do this! Also a thing no one talks about it's incredibly difficult to get rid of dirt in the city vs having a big yard to just dump. We had to dig up 6x20 plot in our yard when we moved in because the previous owners never walked their two giant dogs so the soil was urine soaked/nothing grew and it smelled like urea. I had 3 trash cans full, like hundreds of pounds. We had to rent a truck and take to a friend's house in the burbs because it would take years to toss via garbage bags
The struggle is real with the pests!!! I just had to toss out 3 because of aphids. I re potted them with new soil a few months ago to try saving them. Buuuuuuut they came back in full force. It's winter so I can't put them outside. 🤷♀️ Luckily many plants thriving in water alone so that helps keep a bunch of them pest free.
I have a few plants waiting for people to pick up. One friend keeps saying I will be over soon. Not seen them in well over a year hehe. But I don't feel bad for for getting rid of plants if they don't do well. But my rule tends to be one strike and never again. You look way more chilled after each plant. It was nice to see
It can be frustrating, I had the same issue with people saying yes yes yes I want that it's mine don't give it to anyone else.. and then they never pick them up!
@meganwalker27 It really is a pain. I'd have so much room for new plants for me if they would just come get them!!! So glad it's not just me. Thank you
I love this video! I just threw 2 nasty asparagus ferns on the compost file, as I basically got tired of their thig-ism!! I didn't really like them anyway!!
I have been doing this exact thing for the past couple days! I did chop and prop couple things, but I am not planning on keeping those plants, I'm thinking I will use those props during the upcoming plant swaps in spring. If nobody wants them then, they will go straight to compost. I am also so tired of the vining aroids, I do not want any plant that requires a moss pole, especially things with long internodes. After the pandemic madness of collecting ugly vines that all look the same, I am back to my initial passion for colorful weeds :D (pilea, nerve plants etc). I also feel your pain regarding pests. When you have many plants, pest control can be difficult. I spent a lot of money on predatory bugs during the past year, trying to get rid of thrips. Vining plants look awful once the bottom leaves get damaged and get yellow and die, while things that grow in a bush/rosette shape are much more resilient. Some of my calatheas / alocasias get spider mites every year, but once I treat them they grow new leaves and I can cut the ugly ones and you never know they ever existed. So something to keep in mind - collect plants that don't look sparse when they lose leaves. Also related to underwatering plants - I also occasionally forget to water plants on time, and they end up losing leaves. I am now only potting things based on watering needs. I do not use any terracotta at all, just plastic and ceramic, and if I see a plant ends up underwatered couple times, I bump up the pot size. I am also in the process of moving some plants (eg couple peperomias) to terrariums made in glass containers with lids that I got a goodwill. This is all meant to minimize the damage that I can do with neglect.
“If this does upset you, I’m sorry, feel free to leave a mean comment, I really don’t care.” Thank you Nick for my new motto for 2024. 👏🏼

Yes! Too much stress AND gas 😪

Thanks so much for saying what we all needed to hear!! That said for plants with insect issues even pretty bad issues, neem oil works really well!for getting rid of them! You always make me laugh bc what you say is true! 😂
Do you spray the neem oil on the plant or water the plant with neem oil diluted in water?
If my plants are ugly, dying, dead, etc they get trashed. I love plants but if they dont make me happy, they are gone.

45-50 plants.....I have to go thru purges every so often!
🥹 Thanks so much! This makes me so happy 🥲
😂THE.BEST.VIDEO I’ve seen in awhile. I love your brutal honesty 😅and you cracked me up ~ those plants were DEAD ☠️
Thanks!! 🥹 I'm so glad you enjoyed!
I usually skip your videos but now I won’t, you’re so funny and relatable. Thank you for the content, much appreciated. Sad seeing that gloriosum go in the trash
I love everything about this video, you can literally make anything entertaining 😂 Thanks for making me feel better about purging my plants! 😊
This made me really happy to read 🥹 I'm so glad!
@@NickPileggiPlants Awesome! 😄
Love it!❤
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed 😄 Toss those sad plants!!
Love this video. I don’t feel bad when a purge needs to happen with plants. Working on my own purging. Thanks for sharing
Thanks! 🪴💚
This video made me laugh :)
happy mealy bug meal... that's at least 1200 calories of mealy bug 😮😂
“I’m just really happy I made you feel SOMETHING today…” 😂💀👏
those multiple camera angles are cute and fun 💚🪴💚
I love the motivation given with the beginning dialogue (Instant subscription lol)
And cleaning out old plants to make room for the new ones for the new year!!
Thanks so much and Keep planting!!! 🙌🍃🪴🙏🌱
I’ve started doing the same! I often take cuttings (if there is anything viable) but I don’t hang on to strugglers as long as I used to. Thank you for showing even the professionals have struggles!!
Lmao, I love the energy you brought to this video XD
Lol I'm glad you enjoyed it 😆
I did this before the winter 🥶 I was just collecting plants and they was acting up all over the place. 🙄
Ha, I did this! I’m over trying to keep some plants alive! Lots of work. Ha.
Right?! It's too much sometimes 😪
Thank you so much for making this video!
aww loved the double camera angle! this was fun :)
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed!
Happy New Year, Nick 🎊✨️🙏💖 I wish you continued success in 2024!
Thank you! Happy new year!
Feeling frisky…make a video 😂. This video cracked me up. ❤
Thanks Nick! I couldn't agree more. I needed this. :)
No need to feel guilty, but I fully understand that! It can be hard to get rid of them sometimes. Happy new year 🪴
Thank you so much Nick, for the “permission” to do this. Love your channel!
😉 Of course! Thanks! 😁
Awww your videos have come so far Nick. Thanks for being a honest voice in the YT plant community.
Thanks Nick, what a relief for you. I've done this now and then and it can be a renewal of the collection and ourselves. Happy New Year 2024!
Happy new year!
Happy for you Nick, must feel great when you look around now. Love your energy. Hope 2024 bring you good health and happiness. Can’t wait to see your next videos
Thank you! 🥹 Lots more videos to come!
Last week I got rid of my 2 struggling calatheas (never again), philodendron prince of orange and banana plant (this one because of stubborn spider mites). Pink and white princess have time to sort out themselves or they’ll next. You do what you have to do.
I haven't met a calathea I haven't thrown out 🙃
Poor Nick, not ageing well. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I have the 3x rule too! If I can’t keep it alive, try to salvage it, I’ll buy another if I really like it. But if that one dies I’m done with it. And trying to reroot it helps slow me down from impulse buying.
A few plants have even made it on to their fourth or fifth attempt.... which obviously never goes according to plan 😂
I am doing a plant purge too. Anything that has been struggling to live or has bugs is gone! I’ve also been annoyed with philodendrons, they are thrip magnets!
I can't with the philos anymore!!
I am absolutely loving this type of video. I don’t understand why ppl are upset about purging plants we fall out of love with our clothes, bags shoes even our partners 😅
I went through a crazy phase of succulents addiction now I don’t even want one near me 😂
I'm about to do this!
Didn't think this would make me laugh as much as it did 😂Now I don't feel so bad for unaliving and tossing so many plants recently
Never feel bad about it-you either grow it, learn from it, or throw that ish out because what were are not about to do is be stressed out by plants.😁
🥹🥲😄
I have a HARD to get rid of any.........I haven’t Greenhouse, looks like a hoarder !!!! HAAHAHA. LOVE your videos.
Thank you
One strike, dang! Not wasting any time here 😂 Plants, watch out with this one! 😝
I love this video! I just threw 2 nasty asparagus ferns on the compost file, as I basically got tired of their thig-ism!! I didn't really like them anyway!!
Go ahead Nick! I am TOTALLY WITH YOU!😄
🤗
Colorful weeds, I love that! That's my kind of plant 😂 Great tips here! Thanks!
