My den and living room have north facing windows as well. They are tall windows, but our oak trees block a lot of sunlight. My zz and pothos are sitting on plant stands and are holding their own. They grow super slow, but they’re still alive. lol

About a zz plant. Mine stood collecting dust in my dark apartment for a year. It didn't die or look worse, but it also didn't grow. I had to leave for two months and brought all my plants to my mother. My zz was put in a corners of a room with two huge windows ( one east facing, one southern). It started growing 5 new leafs like in two weeks. And they grew super fast and super big. So it might be a good idea to put your zz plant in a bright indirect light location for couple of months a year. Mine is a zz raven.

I put my Scindapsus Exotica under a grow light for 12 hrs a day and it grows fast. I want mine to be bigger like one of the RUclipsrs (Harli) has on top of her bookshelves. I think hers is the best Exotica of all.
I am going to put my scindapsus pictus on shelf in darker place now :) i was looking for good place and now i got idea. I would also add jewel orchids, they do best in my home in bathroom in northern window, but they like humidity.

I love your honesty and I chuckle at your distaste for calathea, especially Ornata. I've had one for about 2 months and your right..its very picky like its too good to be in my house. It loses a leaf then gains a leaf. Makes no sense to me. 🤪

Some succulents can adapt to very low light conditions. Specially stuff like the aloe Vera. Seriously, that plant thrives in places where other "low light" plants die out
I have cut back my aglonema many times and have made so many new plants that I have given away. My most prolific one is red and green. My green and silver one seems to be a slower grower

@@zullycelissuazo7439 I just bought an air director for floor vents just for this exact reason! My vent is in front of the window and blew up onto my plants. The plastic vent screen/director, prevents the air from going up and pushes it straight across the room, and away from my plants. I got it on Amazon.
@@StitchesbySharonH This is SO helpful, thank you! My house does not get much light and every single usable window has a vent right above it 😩 Thank god I’m renting but I don’t plan to move out anytime soon so I’ll be investing in a few of these air directors!
That pellionia goes so well with the piper ornatum in the background. I have and love both of them with pellionia definitely being such an underrated plant. It roots so easily with even one node cuttings. I'm now considering trying some new "terrarium" plants like marcgravia to see if they are as easy as pellionia.

Q&A: You always seem to do your own thing, when it comes to content & plant choices. I've noticed a lot of channels tend to put out similar content at the same time. Is this just people riding whatever trend/hype train for views/subs? Or, do grower/sellers reach out to creators to push certain plants/products? Have you ever felt pressured by a potential large sponsor, to make a video about something you're not into? Don't have to name names. But, by all means, spill the tea 🙂
Since January I’ve had a small fiddle leaf fig in a north facing window and it’s grown 4 leaves 😳 and not dropped any so far and I’m pretty impressed after seeing so many videos say they’re finicky or very hard too keep alive without certain lighting and water schedules
I have mine in a north facing window with a grow light and it’s thrived the past couple months. I find that the size of the window matters a lot. As well as if there are buildings nearby. The three lots around my window are vacant so it’s purely unfiltered northern exposure.
Q&A: If only part of a plant receives sunlight, is the energy distributed throughout the plant? Or are the benefits only to the local area that gets the light?
Hi hope you are having a nice summer and doing great ! Yes spider plants are really easy and exotic I will said just don’t water too much, she will let you know when they need water if it’s hot maybe 2 a month and make sure your planter has holes wishing you a Happy Planting
Q/A what are your thoughts on the succulent industry, particularly now that people have started taking succulents from their natural areas? Q/A. If there’s a plant at a plant small business, or a plant that is cheaper in Facebook marketplace, do you have a preference?
I was having issues with my pothos exotica and you literally answered all my questions. I find it so cool how houseplants speak to us, I knew about dropping leaves needing water for pothos and philodendron. I didn't know leaves curl to show they need water. This was such a great and informative video. I would love a video in which you talk about how different plants communicate for a need for more sunlight or water or need fertilizer. You can discuss the plant species and the specific signs, that would be so cool.
Q&A: What are your favorite and least favorite things about living in Philly? What do you eat for breakfast? What's your skincare routine? What is your favorite smell?
Hello, Nick. I just found & love your channel Lately I have been getting into plants 🤔 I have like 10 and started propagating them. Your videos are extremely helpful and I love how detailed oriented you are. Keep up with the great work and thank you so much.
I find scindapsus are so picky for me! They're healthy as far as I know, but in low light their leaves are suuper small and they skip nodes really often. I know the leaves can improve if given something to climb, but I'm stubborn and don't wanna do that haha
I have zero issues with everything else I've purchased this year but my scindapsus hates life. It just goes through cycles of curling leaves, uncurling leaves, then putting out tiny leaves.
I only have one Aglaonema and I love it. It is blooming for me ATM 🙂.. definitely going to be picking up a couple different varieties now that I know they can survive in lower light.
Hi Nick! Q&A: Since you've lived alone a few months now, do you miss having a roommate, and does Muffin seem more content without another cat around? This was another great video! I haven't tried it yet, but I'm so tempted to try a small ZZ plant in my bathroom with no window. I've had a couple of the Kangaroo Paw ferns, but lost them. I don't think I was consistent enough with watering them. I have a couple of Aglaonema. One has a lot of pink in the leaves and the other is mostly green (not doing very well). I'd love to find the chocolate one. I'd love to find the Pellionia pulchra, too. It's such a cute little plant. And of course, I LOVE my ZZ plants! I think a Q&A would be great! The other ?????'s I would ask have already been asked below and I gave them a thumbs up. Thank you so much for sharing!
Q&A: Do you wait to see some kind of decline before up potting? My Pilea peperomioides is looking a little big for her pot, but she seems happy enough. Should I disturb her or not?
LOVE the Pelliomia, have 2 in a north facing bathroom window so they get some humidity. They're taking off! I don't think I'd have space in my terrarium for them, they'd likely take over. Love your videos!
Houseplants that thrive in low light? Mushrooms and mold however mold is not a plant but a pest. Q&A: Do you think there is such a thing as too many houseplants? How do you (or do you?) regulate your purchasing habits? There are too many cool plants and I find myself wanting to try them all, which is not feasible in my little apartment
Q&A: Firstly thanks for another great video. The back of my house is North facing and since the pandemic my dining room has been my office. I’ve really wanted to green it up but anything not right next to the window can struggle. I appreciate the tips of some other plants to consider. My question is where do you see yourself in the next few years. You have quit your job at the house plant store and have a really successful RUclips channel. What next? Summer Rayne’s Homestead Brooklyn has expanded to online tutorials, books etc. Do you see this is something you would be interested in? Do you think you have dreams of opening a physical plant store in the future or would you do an online store, as that has been an increasingly popular market place and doesn’t have the overheads of a physical store. I’d be really interested to see where you plan to be in the next few years. I appreciate your weekly content and it’s always informative and entertaining. Have a great day.

QnA: what plants grow or are grown in gardens outside where you live that you wish you could grow in your home? I would definitely grow a whole ass hydrangea in here if I could. Also tomatoes.
I have maybe 10-20 aglaonema varieties. A few root rotted at low light. Use extra perlite or just give the aglaonema more light. They do better root bound, than in a large pot where the shallow roots can rot.

I was sure that those two were something that I would never have in my home but two types of sanseverias and a monstera are now part of my collection. Maybe i just saw too many blog posts of them and lost my aesthetic senses. But were there any plants like this for you? would be interested in knowing :)
Nick have you done a video about plants that are a no no for homes with pets? If not, that would be very helpful to me! I have all these species I want to get but I'm very nervous about what I should and shouldn't have with my extremely curious mischievous kitty. I love your honesty and I chuckle at your distaste for calathea, especially Ornata. I've had one for about 2 months and your right..its very picky like its too good to be in my house. It loses a leaf then gains a leaf. Makes no sense to me. 🤪
Love Pellionias. I am surprised they aren't more popular. But am glad they aren't, easier to buy if they aren't a trend.
Nick your kitchen is so peaceful. Can we have a video from there next?
Yes - I prefer his kitchen area for filming too.
Thank you for another great video! They always make my day. You always give good tips on the plants and they are very helpful. Love this channel, your viewers are awesome! 👌🌿🥰💚
Speaking a light... have you done a video on grow lights? What kind, where it works best and what plants would like it or not.
Q&A: What was the catalyst for your passion for houseplants?
Some succulents can adapt to very low light conditions. Specially stuff like the aloe Vera. Seriously, that plant thrives in places where other "low light" plants die out
I have cut back my aglonema many times and have made so many new plants that I have given away. My
most prolific one is red and green. My green and silver one seems to be a slower grower
Q&A: Do you have any plant that is considered easy by the community but you can't keep alive?
thank you for the down to earth approach! (Q/A): What rare plants would you recommend spending large sums of money on?
Q/A tell us an embarrassing/funny story from your plant store days. What was the most annoying thing about working at the plant store? The best? Love your content, btw!!!
I also have a kangaroo paw fern that stays on my patio all year - I live in Houston and only bring it in the few days our temps go below freezing
I bought a Neon Pothos literally today and I’m so happy I can keep it in my darkish room!
Q&A: What are the most important things to consider when looking for a new home/apartment as a plant parent? Anything else other than window placement?
Vent placement. Believe me. I had perfect window placement (floor to ceiling) but there was a vent on the floor that harmed any plant nearby 😞
@@Liz-su3cb Yay!!! So glad to have been able to help!! 🥰
Thank you for sharing beautiful and amazing houses plants collection lovely
Q&A : your experience with black plants? ie colocasia black magic, alocasia black velvet etc
That pellionia goes so well with the piper ornatum in the background. I have and love both of them with pellionia definitely being such an underrated plant. It roots so easily with even one node cuttings. I'm now considering trying some new "terrarium" plants like marcgravia to see if they are as easy as pellionia.
Hi iza
Nick! I just used your discount code. Thank you! I’ve put that light in my basket several times, but this made it an easier purchase. Woohoo! Love your channel so much. ❤️
Q&A: PLEASE SHOW off your favorite 5 or more kind of plant pots that you love to use to actually plant the plants in vs catch-pots?
Q&A: 10 best Hoyas, and since you are in the Northeast... 10 best plants for windowsills that survive the cold and gloom (Rochester NY here).
Oh, got super excited that you talked about the P. Pulchra! One of my personal favorites! 🙂/Ida, Planta
Q&A: If only part of a plant receives sunlight, is the energy distributed throughout the plant? Or are the benefits only to the local area that gets the light?
Good question, I have wondered that also🌿
You’re supposed to rotate them I think
Plants must be rotated for equal light distribution. I rotate every watering.
@@avionterria7855 they don't rotate in nature
@@Jade-kx3ue are you serious??? In nature, the sun rotates.
Thanks for trying
Austral Gem ferns are amazing, I’ve kept two alive for quite awhile now and they are lush plush and beautiful
Bless you, Nick!!!! I found a plant to replace my desire the Calathea Beauty star. Thank you for ALL of the good info.
Yes! These are some of my favorite plants that I own ❤
Q&A! What's the secret to spider plants? Everyone tells me they're easy, and I love them, but mine always die. I've tried every combination of things.
Scindapsus leaves will also curl if over fertilized.
Q&A: What are your favorite and least favorite things about living in Philly? What do you eat for breakfast? What's your skincare routine? What is your favorite smell?
Hi Rachel
Hello, Nick. I just found & love your channel
Lately I have been getting into plants 🤔 I have like 10 and started propagating them.
Haha never knew you were into plants, love ur channel btw
I have zero issues with everything else I've purchased this year but my scindapsus hates life. It just goes through cycles of curling leaves, uncurling leaves, then putting out tiny leaves.
Are you fertilizing it?
@@annakilifa331 yea! Maybe not enough D:
@@Finchwing could they be getting root bound? Is the pot big enough?
Good morning Nick! Thank u again for this new video. Great way to start my day 😊
I spent some time in Costa Rica doing ecology research, and you can find crabs in bromeliad tanks every now and then! Frogs are much more common
Q&A: What first got you into plants? And or why did you start working at the plant store?
LOVE the Pelliomia, have 2 in a north facing bathroom window so they get some humidity. They're taking off! I don't think I'd have space in my terrarium for them, they'd likely take over. Love your videos!
*Q&A* SOIL - WHAT BLEND GIVES BEST DRAINAGE IN POT WITH NO HOLE . ROCKS ON BOTTOM?
The plant shelf behind you is lookin great!
Houseplants that thrive in low light? Mushrooms and mold however mold is not a plant but a pest. Give your plants some light people, winter is coming. lol, All jokes aside, Nick, love all your post, I learn so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge of plants and the time you put into creating these videos.
It took me a really long time to find a chocolate Aglaonema! It's thriving and putting out new leaves. It and my Ag Tigress are my favorites.
Hi Nick! Thanks again for your great video 🤗.
QA: if you had to leave and could only take 3 plants with you what would they be? What’s your oldest plant?
Hello
Hi👋 that plant is so pretty🤟🤟🤟💚❤ I love all your plants you're showing I really like this video of the plant that you can buy for low light thank you for sharing
that leaf falling thing is happening to 3 of my new aglaonemas and I was panicking like crazy... but thanks to this video I'm not worried anymore, thanks Nick :)
For ur Q&A Video; If u could only have 5 plants in each room of ur Apt or house, keeping in mind which direction each room's windows face, what would they be for each room? (i.e. Kitchen, living room, master bedroom, guest room, bathroom, dinning room, etc...) Just curious, I know u seem 2 b partial 2 Hoya's & u do seem 2 change, or add to, ur list of favorite plants occasionally. 💖
Q & A: if you had to shift to a different country and you could take only one plant with you, which one would that be? And which country would you like to shift to?
You are too cute! I learn so much from your videos , thank you
Q&A: Do you think there is such a thing as too many houseplants? How do you (or do you?) regulate your purchasing habits? There are too many cool plants and I find myself wanting to try them all, which is not feasible in my little apartment
🤣😂 He has over 400 houseplants, that's why it amuses me. He just moved recently and discussed it on video.
I just bought a Pellionia from someone last week but they didn't know the name of it. Thank god I just watched this video, I had it in a South facing window!!
Q&A Which plants are good for misting and which should not be misted?
QnA: what plants grow or are grown in gardens outside where you live that you wish you could grow in your home? I would definitely grow a whole ass hydrangea in here if I could. Also tomatoes.
Q&A: Are you still a fan of green lacewings for pest control?
I have maybe 10-20 aglaonema varieties. A few root rotted at low light. Use extra perlite or just give the aglaonema more light. They do better root bound, than in a large pot where the shallow roots can rot.
The agleonema silver queen is so beautiful!
You and Drew of Lone Fox need to collab. I dunno how or in what form, but the two of you in a collab would be hella cool.
Hi Nick please make videos for Pellionia/Procris plants. Thank you!
Q&A: Hi Nick! I just want to say first that I really enjoy your videos! My first question is : plant collecting and growing has become a real and probaly the only sustained hobby of mine but I find that this is a really lonely hobby. Do you find that too or is there some way that you connect regularly with nearby plant enthusiests?
Also a second question is : when I first started getting into plants i thought monsteras and sanseverias were the ugliest looking plants and didnt understand what the hype was.
I suppose I could probably Google them but figured you might have a bit more insight and knowledge than boring old google. Thanks for your videos I've been on a binge for a couple days now! Loving your channel!!
