  • This video is about My first time Spearfishing in the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey, with our great friends from Apnea, Turkey!
It was difficult to catch the fish as they are extremely shy and very smart. The water clarity was unlike anything I had ever experienced... Spearfishing Catch and Cook in this vlog with authentic Turkish hospitality!

Welcome to the med where fish are small and wise, the bottom is bare, and where you have to dive to the limit every time to find a decent catch, if you're lucky.
Where I'm from, it's even worse.

Thanks for the share Joe, it's amazing just how good the visibility can be in the Med. I lived in Gibraltar for 6 years when I was younger and loved to go snorkeling and exploring with my dad and it always amazed me just how far you can see compared to the waters here in the UK. Cracking stuff mate and I hope you all had a lovely time out there 👍

Another great video Joe. It’s a shame about the fish farms actually being quite harmful. You would think they are under strict rules it keep things clean!

Its a real shame about the fish farms, they need to find ways to make them more sustainable and reduce the environmental impacts of them.
Great to see the life in the water, and well done on your fish, good find by Barcley there 😎

I am not familiar with the legal sizes in Turkey but they share some species with the Cantabric sea (where I fish, north of Spain) and I bet my pinky finger that quite a few of those fish are too small (some breams/sargos are almost target practice). I know the Mediterranean, Cantabric Sea and Atlantic Ocean are not Baja... but damn... try to be bit more selective! There is a ton of people watching these videos and may get the impression that we spearos shot anything in sight.
Otherwise great video! Keep up the good work!

Small correction on the parot fish. Its true it's not native in the med but it didn't come here by ship 😁 It came to the med through the Suez canal like many other species.
    All the best from Cyprus💪

That region of the Mediterranean (or more particularly Aegean) is probably the place I had gone spearfishing the most in my life. I know what it was like before and after the marine farms. Believe me, the farms' impact on the habitat is not the major cause. The biggest problem in Turkey is abusive hunting, including spearfishing in banned styles. This includes forbidden commercial spearfishing, forbidden night time spearfishing, over-fishing, catching banned species etc. Commercial fishing boats have no quota and they harvest undersized fish, they drop their nets in shallow seas even though it is forbidden and use trawls illegally. Very few people respect regulations in Turkey. Plunder is a part of the culture.

The parrotfish (Sparisoma cretense) you caught is not an invasive fish species in the Mediterranean Sea. Also your body was too much exposed during your dive in order to do lurking for a predator fish such as dentex.

Sadly this is true! I spearfish in the med in Spain and the chances of catching something decent are miniscule. Don't dis the fish farms, we've had some seabass escape from a local fish farm recently and that's the only reason to go when you know there are going to be fish about!
