There are DOZENS of ways to say it depending on the situation, including 죽다, 돌아가시다, 사망하다, 별세하다, 영면하다, etc. In this video I'll teach you the ones that you really need to know, as well as how to give your condolences when you hear about someone's death.

I'll also add if you keep seeing Google translate Korean casual text as 'going to America' or 'went to America' that also means died. It's from an anime that became an Internet meme. This was driving me crazy for awhile.

Hi I was wondering if u can help me out with the specifics of a Korean "die" word. It sounds like : "Choo-go-oh/Choo-go-woh". "Nah, choo-go-oh/choo-go-woh." Is the common phrase I hear it used in. It possible it could be be a Busan "accent"? I wanted to know if you ever heard of it and there were any rules with it? Also if u could spell it in korean that would be great.
Are there any slang expressions for death that people use commonly? Like "kicked the bucket". Naver dictionary offers 밥숟가락을 놓다 put down the rice spoon, I love it :)
I did share some other euphemisms later on in the video but I don’t think idioms are that commonly used. Like I’ve never used the 밥숟가락 expression myself. :P

기독교인들은 이 표현 대신 다른 표현으로 대체할 것 같아요! “위로를 빕니다” 이런 말로요. 사람마다 다르지 않을까요? I think some might avoid it bc it’s inappropriate and some might just stick with it bc it’s custom and they’re being polite.
@@YourKoreanSaem Why? Is 명복 a word that is specifically related to Buddhism or incompatible with Christianism?
Yes it’s from Buddhism. Christians don’t believe in an “underworld” that you pass through after death where you need fortune and such, you just go to heaven. So some Christians discourage using the word.
@@YourKoreanSaem Thank you for answering. I found nothing in the dictionary related to the "underworld", just "Blessing for a soul after one's death" which is not necessarily contrary to Christianism (I guess one needs "luck" to enter heaven instead of hell).
I guess this is the reason why Christians encourage " '위로'를 빕니다".

한국 문화에는 무속신앙이나 불교에서 비롯한 표현들이 꽤 들어 있지만
그것을 꼭 종교적으로 인식하지 않고 쓰는 경우가 대부분입니다.
이는 서양 언어에 크리스트교적인 인식이 자연스럽게 베어있는 것과 같습니다.

i have a question: why is it that the lastname Park is written 박 so it should be Pak. where does the R come from? or the name 윤기 is written as Yoongi but why not Yungi? its confussing (and yes i love BTS) 😆💜🤗
I’m not entirely sure but it might be historical reasons, like Park in British English sounds like Pak and it’s already an existing word so maybe that seemed easier? *shrug*
Also Yun is the correct romanization but I think some people write it Yoon because Yun can be mistaken for as rhyming with gun.
