I'm from South Sudan. I didn't go to school when I was little because I was born during the war and to make matters worse our Country was invaded by the neighboring country. So it left us with no choice but to leave our Homeland and we went to other country to seek refuse, to make long story short I came to United States with my husband and my son. I started English as an adult learner it was difficult I got headaches when speaking English at first. Learning a language is a non- stop journey you have to be consistent. I am truly impressed. I work with a lot of Ukrainians here in the U.S. and every time I hear them speaking in their native language it just sounds like gibberish to me. I imagine myself trying to learn their language and it just seems so impossible to me. So for you to be speaking my language at this level is mind blowing. Omg, me too! I’m from Malaysia and at best we speak a non-standard variety of English here but I used mostly similar methods as her too! I’m glad it works for you. My fluency is probably just 70% but I try my best to be as fluent as possible. I’m glad I’m alone in this kind of journey.

There is another problem with the fluency that none of the heard by myself teachers have ever spoken about. Wonder what it is? It is fluency in your native language. How can a person become fluent in a foreign language if he or she is not actually a fluent speaker? I've never ceased to be amazed about those people I"ve been trying to teach speaking English for some time. Especially that part when they come to the point they can't speak faster than they speak their native language:) and when they ask me why it is so, I say: "because you are not able to speak fluently" There is a great difference between fluency and simply fast speech. Fluency deals with such thing as rhetoric and not all the people have that naturally. So if you want to become fluent in a foreign language you are studying you should also practice fluency in you native language. And it doesn't include speaking only about "how was your day" or "getting on a plane" or all this stuff you are usually given at any course of foreign language learning, but the capability of speaking on different topics and usage of gigantic loads of vocabulary. Not any person can do this and what's more important it is not necessary for many of us to do so. And remember the most principal thing, communication is not about fluency, it's a lot more about comprehension!!!
Yeah, exactly. I've come to think that for a while now, too. I'm not so fluent in English cause I've never been actually quite fluent in Spanish (my L1) due to I'm a very introverted person and don't have much social experience. So that's why I stopped worrying about speaking fast (fluent) English as a native English speaker would cause IT'S JUST NOT ME! AND THAT'S PERFECTLY FINE, as long as I'm able to communicate anything I want/need everything is gonna be alright 👌💪

What amazed me is not how fluent you speak, it is your pronunciation. You sound almost like a native English speaker. You knew which accent you preferred. A lot of people still struggle to distinguish British English and American English after years of learning. How could you master your pronunciation in just two years? It's unbelievable. Every single learner knows that the longer the sentence, the harder it is to use the right tone. Please don't just tell me it is all because of practice. The only thing I can believe is that you are truly gifted with language.
I am an American and a high school English teacher with 30 years of experience. You speak English very well. Yes, I can hear a tiny hint of an accent if I pay attention, but it is barely noticeable. Besides, your English is infinitely better than my Ukrainian. Congratulations.
Even though I’m not an American, I’ve noticed some tiny things in her speech at the beginning of the video. I immediately paused the video and looked at her information, and it was really cool to realise that I was correct about her being a non-native speaker. I don’t know whether I’m right or not, but I think sometimes she loses her aspiration on consonants, which is impossible for a native speaker because it’s a natural part of pronunciation. She did a great job, though. I’m not trying to criticise or something cuz my own pronunciation is far from her, but it makes me feel more confident in English; six months ago, I never would have realised she wasn’t a native speaker. I understand that the name of the video itself gives information about her being a non native speaker, but first I watched another video where it was not clear. I hope my writing is understandable; I still work on it.

Your accent is excellent as well; only a few pronunciation nuances that give you away, but in no way is that a bad thing - those nuances give it that attractive character that is charming to native speakers. @@lancechris.2592this is hilarious. So, "it works wonders" is the basic idiom that means that something functions VERY well. Stevie Wonder is/was a famous American singer who is blind. Saying "it works stevie wonders" may mean the same as the basic idiom, or it could have the added context of something functioning SURPRISINGLY well. 😂
I´d say her most important advice was about listening. Listening means exposing yourself the more you can to english contents. I can say it by personal experience: exposure is the key. Changing your cellphone language to english is not enough, definitely. Actually, this is really inconsequentional. When we talk about exposing we mean you have to watch movies and tv shows in english. If you already have a good level of fluency you really have to stop watching stuff with subtitles. We can only improve better our listening skill if we do start listening contents without subtitles: that´s what is called "real english".
Well done Anna, you are right, the only way to be better in anything it's to push yourself every day. It's impossible to learn something and progress if you stay on your comfort zone. Our society should says and shows more often to new generation the effort to reach the best you want to. Congrats and carry on as I do too because I am frensh and year after year speaking, listening, phoning, reading, watching become more confortable for me as well.

Your accent is amazing. You're in one of them who has a great accent along with their pronunciation. I listened to you at 1.25 speed. So that I can understand natives of English language as well. Whenever I listen to natives, I don't get 100% of what they are saying. A teacher suggested in his video that listen to language teachers at 1.5. By doing so, you can understand natives easily. I have just watched this video lesson at 1.25 speed and got everything.

Your American accent is extremely good. Outside of some Dutch people you sound the most like a native American than anyone I've ever heard. It's interesting that your vowels sound like the accent that is similar to people from Minnesota, USA. I've never heard that particular sound from anyone who isn't from Canada or Minnesota.
First of all, your spoken English is amazing and if you hadn't said that you're not a native English speaker, I wouldn't noticed it hahahaha. Basically, you did everything that I've been trying to do (and I really do) for almost one year in order to become fluent in English. Americanizing my accent is my goal as well, but that's not a kind of obsession because I'm not a early bilingual. However, you got a new subscriber. ;)

This is insane, I struggle to believe you but realize you are for real. The first time in my entire life Ukrainian speaks with no accent and has never lived abroad. I traveled the world since I was 22 and lived in Canada for over 14 years, I CAN NOT hide my accent that good. Wow!! I am shocked.
My path was very different from yours and I took 15 years to get to fluency. But it was my path, the way it happened to me. I went to an English school for 5 years, then I did one more year learning how to teach English. It was awesome and I think at that point, I would be able to be fluent, but I didn't have any other chances to study or to use English. I went to university and despite I used it for texts I didn't have the chance to really talk in English. So I was just listening, watching, playing video games, all in English. First with subtitles, then without. Same with games, but all alone. Then in 2019 I had the chance to talk with a friend that came from US in English, and at that point, it took me 1 week to fluency. BUT I had spent about 15 years just passively learning the language, I couldn't use the spoken languange with others, just some small phrases that I shouted sometimes, some texts, but not a real conversation. One thing that is interesting is that I was able to talk in English with an American accent without even thinking of it. It just happened. Anyways, I still study everyday, and nowadays I'm trying to learn German, Italian and Latin, and had studied Spanish before but I still need to practice with others, the same problem I had with English. By the way, I'm from Brazil, and you can't find a lot of people talking in English around here. But like I said, this was my journey, it's incomparable.
@@sridevirengarajan1445 One thing that made me get a fluent level was to listen a lot. I mean, it seems to be simple but it isn't so simple. I went through the process of watching movies and series, first using subtitles, then removing it to listen, and listening more and more, until I could get exactly what they were saying without any help. I played a lot of video games, usually with subtitles so they could help me to get different accents and ways of saying the same word. And finally I tried reading out loud texts so my mouth would pronounce the words the correct way, so I could get used to talking, saying words in English. And then, when I had the chance to have a real conversation in English with someone I just spent a day to get used to a real conversation. For me, it took some time, but everyone has its time, so you should keep practicing, this will get you fluency before you expect. And one more thing, when you have the chance, try to talk with someone in English, even if you're not fluent, this always help, and don't feel afraid to make mistakes, that's what makes you get fluent.

I am in 8 class and I have been learning English for over 6 months. I speak with my friends and siblings in English. Everyday I watch English conversations for an hour. I only listen to English songs. I am also able to understand native speakers clearly. I have also learnt many grammar rules. Seriously, my English increased a lot. But still I feel little hesitate to speak with strangers and I did not focus on my pronunciation.
I love your story I've been strugling with finding good ways or methods that would work for me very well. Very inspiring indeed. I really love the fluency level this respectabel person has reached and at the same time I feel so good. Why? Well, simply because I've done almost every single thing the teacher here has done over like 2 years and luckily it worked wonders for me, too. I'm completely thankful for the current level I've reached at speaking. However, I'd like to be honest with you friends and say that there are still many contexts where I would feel a little confused when have to answer or direct a question on that newly handled topic. Nevertheless, I believe that this is absolutely normal and okay, since I used to have troubles even talking about my personal information a couple of years ago; fortunately, now such kind of words comes out of my mouth naturally and spontaneously. To be honest, you're more fluent than a number of so called native English speakers. Looks like you're proof that comprehensible input really is the most effective way to acquire language. I've seen this with people I know as well. Of course, personal effort counts too.

I am truly impressed. I work with a lot of Ukrainians here in the U.S. and every time I hear them speaking in their native language it just sounds like gibberish to me. I imagine myself trying to learn their language and it just seems so impossible to me. So for you to be speaking my language at this level is mind blowing. There was a moment in watching this video I realized you're not an American and that you just acquired American english, I got a little freaked out because I was so impressed.

Omg, me too! I’m from Malaysia and at best we speak a non-standard variety of English here but I used mostly similar methods as her too! I’m glad it works for you. My fluency is probably just 70% but I try my best to be as fluent as possible. I’m glad I’m alone in this kind of journey.

There is another problem with the fluency that none of the heard by myself teachers have ever spoken about. Wonder what it is? It is fluency in your native language. How can a person become fluent in a foreign language if he or she is not actually a fluent speaker? I've never ceased to be amazed about those people I"ve been trying to teach speaking English for some time. Especially that part when they come to the point they can't speak faster than they speak their native language:) and when they ask me why it is so, I say: "because you are not able to speak fluently" There is a great difference between fluency and simply fast speech. Fluency deals with such thing as rhetoric and not all the people have that naturally. So if you want to become fluent in a foreign language you are studying you should also practice fluency in you native language. And it doesn't include speaking only about "how was your day" or "getting on a plane" or all this stuff you are usually given at any course of foreign language learning, but the capability of speaking on different topics and usage of gigantic loads of vocabulary. Not any person can do this and what's more important it is not necessary for many of us to do so. And remember the most principal thing, communication is not about fluency, it's a lot more about comprehension!!!
Yeah, exactly. I've come to think that for a while now, too. I'm not so fluent in English cause I've never been actually quite fluent in Spanish (my L1) due to I'm a very introverted person and don't have much social experience. So that's why I stopped worrying about speaking fast (fluent) English as a native English speaker would cause IT'S JUST NOT ME! AND THAT'S PERFECTLY FINE, as long as I'm able to communicate anything I want/need everything is gonna be alright 👌💪

What amazed me is not how fluent you speak, it is your pronunciation. You sound almost like a native English speaker. You knew which accent you preferred. A lot of people still struggle to distinguish British English and American English after years of learning. How could you master your pronunciation in just two years? It's unbelievable. Every single learner knows that the longer the sentence, the harder it is to use the right tone. Please don't just tell me it is all because of practice. The only thing I can believe is that you are truly gifted with language.
I am an American and a high school English teacher with 30 years of experience. You speak English very well. Yes, I can hear a tiny hint of an accent if I pay attention, but it is barely noticeable. Besides, your English is infinitely better than my Ukrainian. Congratulations.
Even though I’m not an American, I’ve noticed some tiny things in her speech at the beginning of the video. I immediately paused the video and looked at her information, and it was really cool to realise that I was correct about her being a non-native speaker. I don’t know whether I’m right or not, but I think sometimes she loses her aspiration on consonants, which is impossible for a native speaker because it’s a natural part of pronunciation. She did a great job, though. I’m not trying to criticise or something cuz my own pronunciation is far from her, but it makes me feel more confident in English; six months ago, I never would have realised she wasn’t a native speaker. I understand that the name of the video itself gives information about her being a non native speaker, but first I watched another video where it was not clear. I hope my writing is understandable; I still work on it.

Stumbled across this...as a native American English speaker, just want to say congrats and well done for your fluency accomplishment! Very, very impressive! Your accent is excellent as well; only a few pronunciation nuances that give you away, but in no way is that a bad thing - those nuances give it that attractive character that is charming to native speakers. @@lancechris.2592this is hilarious. So, "it works wonders" is the basic idiom that means that something functions VERY well. Stevie Wonder is/was a famous American singer who is blind. Saying "it works stevie wonders" may mean the same as the basic idiom, or it could have the added context of something functioning SURPRISINGLY well. 😂
I´d say her most important advice was about listening. Listening means exposing yourself the more you can to english contents. I can say it by personal experience: exposure is the key. Changing your cellphone language to english is not enough, definitely. Actually, this is really inconsequentional. When we talk about exposing we mean you have to watch movies and tv shows in english. If you already have a good level of fluency you really have to stop watching stuff with subtitles. We can only improve better our listening skill if we do start listening contents without subtitles: that´s what is called "real english".
Listening is one of the most important things to do when it comes to fluency.

Your accent is amazing. You're in one of them who has a great accent along with their pronunciation. I listened to you at 1.25 speed. So that I can understand natives of English language as well. Whenever I listen to natives, I don't get 100% of what they are saying. A teacher suggested in his video that listen to language teachers at 1.5. By doing so, you can understand natives easily. I have just watched this video lesson at 1.25 speed and got everything.

Your American accent is extremely good. Outside of some Dutch people you sound the most like a native American than anyone I've ever heard. It's interesting that your vowels sound like the accent that is similar to people from Minnesota, USA. I've never heard that particular sound from anyone who isn't from Canada or Minnesota.

First of all, your spoken English is amazing and if you hadn't said that you're not a native English speaker, I wouldn't noticed it hahahaha. This is insane, I struggle to believe you but realize you are for real. The first time in my entire life Ukrainian speaks with no accent and has never lived abroad. I traveled the world since I was 22 and lived in Canada for over 14 years, I CAN NOT hide my accent that good. Wow!! I am shocked.
My path was very different from yours and I took 15 years to get to fluency. But it was my path, the way it happened to me. I went to an English school for 5 years, then I did one more year learning how to teach English. It was awesome and I think at that point, I would be able to be fluent, but I didn't have any other chances to study or to use English. I went to university and despite I used it for texts I didn't have the chance to really talk in English. So I was just listening, watching, playing video games, all in English. First with subtitles, then without. Same with games, but all alone. Then in 2019 I had the chance to talk with a friend that came from US in English, and at that point, it took me 1 week to fluency. BUT I had spent about 15 years just passively learning the language, I couldn't use the spoken languange with others, just some small phrases that I shouted sometimes, some texts, but not a real conversation. One thing that is interesting is that I was able to talk in English with an American accent without even thinking of it. It just happened. Anyways, I still study everyday, and nowadays I'm trying to learn German, Italian and Latin, and had studied Spanish before but I still need to practice with others, the same problem I had with English. By the way, I'm from Brazil, and you can't find a lot of people talking in English around here. But like I said, this was my journey, it's incomparable.

@@sridevirengarajan1445 One thing that made me get a fluent level was to listen a lot. I mean, it seems to be simple but it isn't so simple. I went through the process of watching movies and series, first using subtitles, then removing it to listen, and listening more and more, until I could get exactly what they were saying without any help. I played a lot of video games, usually with subtitles so they could help me to get different accents and ways of saying the same word. And finally I tried reading out loud texts so my mouth would pronounce the words the correct way, so I could get used to talking, saying words in English. And then, when I had the chance to have a real conversation in English with someone I just spent a day to get used to a real conversation. For me, it took some time, but everyone has its time, so you should keep practicing, this will get you fluency before you expect. And one more thing, when you have the chance, try to talk with someone in English, even if you're not fluent, this always help, and don't feel afraid to make mistakes, that's what makes you get fluent.

I am in 8 class and I have been learning English for over 6 months. I speak with my friends and siblings in English. Everyday I watch English conversations for an hour. I only listen to English songs. I am also able to understand native speakers clearly. I have also learnt many grammar rules. Seriously, my English increased a lot. But still I feel little hesitate to speak with strangers and I did not focus on my pronunciation.

I really love the fluency level this respectabel person has reached and at the same time I feel so good. Why? Well, simply because I've done almost every single thing the teacher here has done over like 2 years and luckily it worked wonders for me, too.
I'm completely thankful for the current level I've reached at speaking.
However, I'd like to be honest with you friends and say that there are still many contexts where I would feel a little confused when have to answer or direct a question on that newly handled topic. Nevertheless, I believe that this is absolutely normal and okay, since I used to have troubles even talking about my personal information a couple of years ago; fortunately, now such kind of words comes out of my mouth naturally and spontaneously.

I don't know, what's going on. I want to be an English teacher in a few years, I'm working hard on my accent and general knowledge but still, when I see videos like this one I'm super motivated to work even harder. Love your journey, I made many mistakes at the beginning of my learning process, but I'm trying to adjust and videos like that help immensely. I just need to record myself more often and try to courage myself to post videos on Hadar group :)

To be honest, you're more fluent than a number of so called native English speakers. Looks like you're proof that comprehensible input really is the most effective way to acquire language. I've seen this with people I know as well. Of course, personal effort counts too.

I am shocked. I actually thought that Anna was American. She speaks so clear and so fluently that I had no doubt it. Yes I noticed accent but there are a lot of accents in America. And I felt quite frustrated because I had been learning for bunch of years and didn't achieve what Anna managed to do in 2 years. Shame on me.

Andrew Think more like 40 years for me... Don’t get me wrong! I write and read well, but cannot get rid of my Spanish accent.
I know that If I can hear every word then It isn't natural accent.
