    I have a strong preference for American-made knives, which means I have fewer knives because of it. It's probably a bit hypocritical or pseudo-righteous since I don't put anywhere near the same effort into discerning the origin of my clothes, flashlights, and other items. I don’t mind foreign stuff but, I do make an effort to go with a product from a recognizable democracy and preferable an American brand (like Cold Steel>WE).
    Thanks for the video. Safe travels and enjoy Blade, Satu. ✌️

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts bro. I used to pay attention to all the items I buy. Seems like the stores I go to have less domestic items available. Like you I found myself carrying about the knives and not about my shoes or clothes etc. definitely feels hypocritical to me. I’m glad that most of my interests have moved into customs. Feels like a one on one transaction with the maker From that point of view I don’t seem to care where they maker is from

    Well, this question answers itself for me as you well know, so get ready for a lengthy rant! 😁 It's very important that my knives are USA-made. I want to support my fellow countrymen any way I can. For us, by us. I have 1 knife not made here and it's made in Taiwan (Spyderco Smock). At minimum I'll buy it as long as it's not made in China (or another communist country). Easy choice not to support communism in any way I can. USA designers who OEM in China won't get my support either. Other small knife companies have done the hard work and found success without going to China. It can be done! I've heard some makers who OEM with China (cough Sherif cough) make the excuse that buying knives made in China doesn't support communism, but they provide no supporting evidence. It does 100% go toward supporting the CCP. China is a centrally planned economy. Everything is influenced by the CCP in China. They target the 'private' sector and they don't hide it. It's easy to look this up on the internet and find supporting articles and information. But why do these designers make these defenses for producing in China? So they can make money. You can always follow the money. They have the right to do that, but I have the right not to support them if I feel it contributes to undermining this great country of ours.
    Having said that, it's impossible to go 100% USA-made for everything you buy, unless you're crazy rich. You just can't. Too much manufacturing has been sent overseas in the interest of profit. That's not always a bad thing. But when it comes to something that feels like a uniquely American tradition, like knives, that's a no-go for me. I take pride in what I carry and show off. Gotta represent my country. I can't avoid buying China-made goods completely, but I sure can try and I do check everything I buy to see where it's made. At least with knives, it's very easy to avoid!
    The problem with China being in the knife game is they have flooded the market with good-to-great quality knives, with good-to-great materials, at prices you can't compete against. But that's the point. They are trying to undermine our own manufacturing and take our money out of our own economy. They get away with cheap, quality knives due to no/little regulations and cheap/slave labor. They don't pay 'living wages,' benefits, retirement...nothing. They have successfully shifted the mindset of your average everyday American by convincing them that everything should be viewed as a value proposition and not a piece of craftmanship made by your fellow countrymen to take pride in.
    A lot of people (not you) make the really lazy, but popular, argument that 'well you're watching this video on a China made device' to justify buying/promoting Chinese made goods. That belief is generally untrue. Many many computer and phone parts are made in countries other than China. My Samsung Galaxy phone is not made in China. Many parts of my computer are not made in China. Nobody wants to do the actual research to debunk that notion, though, so that false narrative spreads like wild fire. I just heard MC make another smooth-brain argument like that on his live Friday (a rarity for me to watch him) and 1K+ people eat it up like lemmings. The dude is bought and paid for by China so big shocker there 🤣
    You're right about the laziness of Americans today. It's no wonder China is eating our lunch. Too many stupid people in charge or too many lazy workers who can't compete lost their jobs to exported Chinese labor. We screwed ourselves thanks to a gov't that created the hand-out generation and de-valued hard work and responsibility.
    "American Made" still means something, even if it's different now. We can't let ourselves succumb to a mindset of 'well this-and-that are made in China so oh well, may as well just go with the crowd.' I think the pendulum will swing the other way eventually and it's gotta start somewhere. Don't give up hope bro. Advocate for the right thing. Feels good at first to cave to something because the burden feels lighter, but, nothing worth supporting is ever easily done. Even with something as simple as knives.
    Having said all that, I will always stand on the rock of 'it's your money, do with it what you will,' even if I strongly disagree with where the money goes. If you support freedom, you have to do it in all ways!
    Cheers and have a blessed week bro 😎👊

    Dude this has to be one of my favorite video of yours, and it’s not only because I agree with you, I’ve been saying this same shit but less elegantly. I kind of want to do a video response to this but instead I’ll just a give a short response here.
    I always had found it hypocritical that ppl who claim to buy usa made only knives, probably own Indian made phones, Chinese made computers and Korean made tvs. That being said I have always rooted for the home team, but there is a point when it’s exhausting.
    A little story, my grandfather owned a ton of factories back before I was born. As a kid I’ve seen him accumulated a lot more and worked with many big American companies. However, when I was like 10 years old, all those companies outsourced their work overseas. I’ve watched my grandfather be the boss to just being an employee. That hurt seeing as a kid, and I’ve always hated China because of it.
    Fast forward to when I was in my early 20’s. I tried to start a company with American made product only, boy was the upfront cost disgusting. I was only a full time college kid working multiple part time jobs so I couldn’t afford it. I decided to use overseas manufacturing instead. The business failed but it made me realize something.
    1 - Why was I ever made at China for having the companies my grandfather partnered with go overseas? Because they ppl who made that decision was American. No one forced them. (Obviously now I’m older I know why they did it, my hate was directed in the wrong way)
    2 - Although I love my country, I refuse to go broke trying to make a point. As selfish as this may seem, my goals and aspirations come first. And if I have to buy non American made stuff and/or start a business with overseas production, I will do that in a heartbeat if it will allow me to reach my aspirations.

    Had to replace my water heater, had property taxes hit and then my dad ended up in the hospital for a couple days so no blade show for me again this year. I’d love to pick up a XL Tyr but it don’t look like it’s in the cards. C’est la vie, what can you do. Couldn’t agree more about Donnie Bless. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed his IG posts and marveled at the extraordinary quality he turns out, just like Scott Stills at Edgy Bladeworks. Super talented dudes! As far as imported knives go, I’m not really against them, they’re definitely not garbage and I 100% agree “Made in the USA” doesn’t always equate to a quality product. That being said, I’m at the point where I have zero need of buying a new knife, it’s all about wants at this point, so I can be more selective about what I buy.
    I have zero issues buying a foreign made knife, except for China at this point. I’ve bought a lot of Chinese made knives in the past but something Medford said really stuck with me; own less but own better. It’s a sentiment that has been repeated by a lot of other guys I’ve been watching recently. China is an ideological enemy of this country and I refuse to spend discretionary funds on Chinese made products. I have to spend money on too much stuff I actually need that’s made in China, so I’m going to avoid spending money on things I just want. There’s tons of fantastic knife makers around the globe, many in countries that, while it may not be at the same levels as here, still provide a good sense of freedom to their people. That’s who I will continue to support. Sorry for the rambling dissertation, it’s just something that hit on something that already been on my mind. Have a great week and enjoy your family time and blade show Dave!

    There are a LOT of top quality knives coming from China, Russia, and other countries around the world. Unfortunately, those companies must pay taxes to their home countries. While you cannot spend 100% American, you can get dang close to it for most things that aren't major manufacturing. And a lot of those things you can get from Taiwan.
    Supporting a Small American Company/Designer who OEM's through China because they can't get An American Manufacturer to do so at the same cost is absolutely something I'm willing to do/have done, but still makes my skin a little itchy. First off great video and have a blast at blade. When I started getting into the hobby I was pretty ignorant on the whole subject. Over time as I learned more and found my niche I made the decision that I would stop buying Chinese knives. Not saying there there aren’t models I think are cool and I’m not saying they are crap either. They have stepped their game up. But I just wish people would educate themselves on the situation then decide. Acting like they are separate companies making them is a mistake just look at the optics world. I just watched a great video on that and they go over the whole process and it’s the same as knives. You can’t buy a custom Chinese knife from a talented maker because they aren’t allowed. Instead those talented people have to make production knives for the world to buy and never get to reap the rewards for their talents.

I don't mind spending 50% more to support this "manufacturing knowledge" You pointed out - the USA and other countries need to retain a base level of manufacturing. That's why I support Swedish, Spanish, Italian, and other European and western Asian manufacturing, and even El Salvador (Condor - Joe Flowers). If the supply chain debacle wrought by Covid 19 lockdowns didn't wake people up to these risks, then people are just choosing willful idiocy...in the knife or any other industry. Man, you opened up a can of worms on that ramble. Working from the engineering/design side, I have seen the work ethic dwindling away as well. Not to get too political, but I do think it comes from our leaders down. If we as a country respected and promoted manufacturing, we would still be number one. We allowed this to happen by being too lazy and wanting too much stuff for less money. And I feel it is our leaders that create the "enemy" thing. I've traveled and worked with people from other countries and we are really more the same than different at that person to person level. Governments and sometimes religions will manipulate people just to have someone to call the enemy. With that being said, I feel we need to take care of ourselves, our families, and our countries before sending money (buying or giving) to other countries. Yeah I’d prefer to buy 100% American if I could. McNees did an update saying that the raw titanium that he orders to make his knives isn’t American, but he still says made in the USA. I think that 95% of American knife makers are getting their raw titanium from overseas companies. Doesn’t really bother me to find that out about the titanium to be honest.

    • @satudave
      @satudave  4 месяца назад +1

      I suppose you can analyze it down to raw materials but as far as I am concerned the actual makings of the product is what I was personally referring to. I am almost positive that the raw materials are globally produced and sourced Some of those materials and skills are country has already lost. Appreciate your input Josh. 😎👊

      I agree. It is a question McNees received multiple times. I’m not sure why people care, but they sent him the question enough times about the titanium he uses for him to make a video about it. I thought it was going a bit too far.

    Blade show is good but since the makers syndicate slow has been established by OZ machine Co I'm no longer interested in going to these bigger shows. To much crap to go through to find what I'm into, the makers syndicate is a show that catters to the exact kinda knives I like, and many others. Having things imported are just a way of life but I choose to buy American when ever I can. And not just knives, it applies to boots, clothes, and anything else I find that has a American made option. Buying American made products is important to me when it's possible.

    • @satudave
      @satudave  4 месяца назад

      Thanks Chris. I really used to pay attention to the country of origin. Seems like most of the physical stores I shop in rarely even offer American made products anymore. Sad when I think about it too. I have heard of the syndicate show but never been. Going to Atl is a great excuse to see family and catch the show so I will most likely keep it as the main event for now. Would like to see other too but time and money are always factors 😎👊.

    Hey Dave this is my opinion, theres alot of guys who design knives here. And send there designs to be made in china to be manufactured. There is only a few who have gambled and actually built a company and made knives in the usa. Look at Great eastern cutlery they build the very best production slipjoints in the world. China is dominating the knife world bc they dont have the same standards as the usa. We have destroyed American Manufacturing bc of red tape taxes and greed. We have become a broken nation and sent all our money to build up nations who hate us and are stabbing us in the back.

    • @satudave
      @satudave  4 месяца назад

      I’m not gonna disagree my friend. The makers that have the knife and skills but choose to still use China to make their products for them is more of the grey area I personally don’t like. It always boils down to being able to make more money easier.

    Not to go off topic, but Dave don't you live in AZ? Regarding your skill level topic, think of those chip manufacturing companies building here in this state. From what was said in the new, that company is going to have to bring in their workers to get US workers up to speed, because it was said US does not have the skilled workers to initially start in the jobs for this chip plant. Good point on skill level, if I may go on a rant for a moment I have tried to pass on knowledge to my adult kids about things like working on a car, basic household electrical and plumbing. Their response is to either call me, or call someone. I know this is just my example, but their lack of desire to be self sufficient, it's frustrating. Sorry for the rant, thanks for the video, have fun at Blade Show.

    • @satudave
      @satudave  4 месяца назад

      I didn’t even think of using them as an example but that would have been perfect. My wife constantly tells me to call someone instead of doing the work myself. I know I have more pride doing it myself. And even if I need to buy a tool or learn how to do it…. I usually get it done cheaper and better. Just a different mindset. Appreciate your thoughts my friend. 👊😎
