I had 38 pairs of shoes, boots and sandals.😮 You have helped me to declutter down to nine pairs! The ones I’ve donated were not comfortable on me or were for my fantasy self. They’ve gone! I also donated 14 handbags and am down to four. You’ve also just made me think about wearing clothes that aren’t great because I’m the only one seeing them. It’s like I don’t care enough about myself to wear clothes that look good. That should change too!😢. Thank you.
@@AtoZenLifethank you. Still find I’m holding on to some fantasy self items I need to let go. Expensive clothes I’m sure I’ll wear. I won’t. We really do need a lot less than we realise. I just had a really difficult week so decided to wear only black tops and jeans that week. One pair of boots. One bag. One coat. Made me realise how much easier that week was! No choices to be made. Just grab and go. I am going to have another go at my wardrobe! 😊
@@Chrissyhappy this is a good point - I was feeling a bit smug because I already only have 5 pairs of shoes/boots/trainers and one chest of drawers' worth of clothes - clothes and shoes just aren't my thing, I don't care about collecting them - but then I remembers there is one storage bag of "when I was thin" nice clothes under the bed. & now I feel less smug, haha. (also I have problem areas, mainly books, so it's not like I don't have work to do)
@@YasmeenKhan That's me too 🤣 I'm thinking my closet is all nice and decluttered, my dresser is the same! Yay me! Oh wait.....there's that big Rubbermaid bin in the back bedroom closet packed full of clothes I will never wear again......and my "cleaning cloths" bins full of cut-up old t-shirts, old washcloths, etc, are overflowing so much that whole shelf is stuffed full. Like I'm really going to use 100 cleaning cloths at once lol. Not-so-smug-now me still has work to do 😊
@@JamieM470 😄 I use the cut up old clothes to wipe the toilet. I wipe and immediately toss the rag in the trash. The stack of rags never grows, it gets used up 👍
I believe at the beginning of my decluttering journey, i had 137 pairs of shoes. I was single and just kept buying cheep and not so cheap shoes. Now i have just a few pairs. It took at least 6 months and multiple decluttering sessions to get rid of most if them. I needed to be honest with myself. Now i don't shop unless i truly need it so i have learned from my old bad habits. Great video!!
That sounds like my daughter. I had to move her when she was in the hospital a couple of years ago and I couldn't believe how many shoes she had! Most were likely from the thrift store, which makes it too easy to overdo these types of things!
A little tip on the topic of makeup, on the packaging you'll see a symbol that looks like an open jar with a number eg 3, 6, 12 this refers to how many months after opening until it needs to be disposed of.
Your son showing his "talent" made my nose crinkle with joy!😂😂 That was the cutest thing!😂😂😂 I've been watching your videos a lot recently and really enjoy them! I'm not a minimalist in the SLIGHTEST, but I'm decluttering a lot, and you've helped a great deal! ❤
@AtoZenLife because he's raised right! 😊😊 I'm currently watching your phone decluttering video... GURL I NEEDED THIS! I find you very enjoyable to watch because your delivery is really clear, well paced, and you are always the central focus on screen, as you don't have a busy background. These little things alongside valuable content, make this a new channel for me to subscribe to. Thanks so much!
Coming back to this post to say that before I took out the trash tonight, I cleaned out my pantry and freezer (I clean out the fridge every week). Thanks for motivating me!
I spent my weekend decluttering my closet. I had 69 pairs of shoes and after I went through them all, I kept 17 and gave away and donated the rest. 17 is still a lot but as a previous sneaker head, I’m proud 😂
I have 8 pairs of shoes and I wear them all regularly. I used to have a huge walk in closet and a large amount of shoes and in the last 4 years I've massively cut down. The first 2 years I donated 1-2 trash bags of clothes per month. Now I donate 2 trash bags a year when I find things I don't care to wear anymore. I can cycle my wardrobe for hot and cold seasons and each one fits in a single plastic storage tote. We don't have walk in closets in our home and have small reach in closets from the 80s. My husband and I can both easily share our closet as well as fit our dresser in the closet.
I watched this on a cold Saturday evening at home. Gave me the baby steps I needed to tackle the huge task of all the shit I bought when bored in COVID lockdowns. Looking at the piles of stuff to get rid of - charity and the bin- I feel like a weight has been lifted. Thank you ❤
That's quite the talent your little man has there! 😂. My boys loved doing that too. Then my brother taught them how to do that with the back of their knees. They called it their "knee pits" 😂. I miss those days. The he introduced them to using a tire pump to make those noises in their armpits. They're in their 20s now and thankfully don't serenade me that way anymore. 😂
Where I live, scavengers know the garbage pickup days & routes. Just set out a box of stuff marked "free," at the same time as the bins, and they hoover it up. Super easy!
I used to keep all the books that I had already read so I wouldn’t forget about the experience. Now I keep a book journal where I simply write the title, author, and day I finished it. Then I can look back and remember what I’ve read and it jogs my memory, but I can declutter the book right away. And I love the feeling of finishing a book and getting to write it in my book! I’ve kept this habit for 14 years in the same little journal!
Last year I put a strip of duct tape on all my spices. I decided to check back a year later and any spices that were still taped I would throw away. I was so shocked to see I didn't even use half my spices within a full year! I was able to throw away all those old spices and condense my spices into a smaller drawer in my kitchen!
That is SUCH a good idea, I'm going to do this as well! Little tape over the lid and put a date in my calendar to check which ones have not had the tape removed.
@@DonnaAskins aw no problem I hope it helps!! Another thing I did is if I untaped a spice because I used it for a new recipe, and then didn't end up liking the recipe/won't make it again, I taped it back up haha. If I won't be remaking that recipe it's kinda like I never opened that spice if that makes sense
I do something similar with my clothes. I hang most of them and as I put away clothes, everything gets pushed to the back. I know everything in the back, I haven’t worn. I also put a different colored hanger in there after I declutter. Like your tape, it’s a visual divider showing what I have and have not worn. Everything in the back can probably get donated. You can also turn your hangers backwards. And when you wear something, flip it back around when you put it away. Everything still backwards after a certain period of time can be donated.
Please remember that "Expiration date" is a SUGGESTION. The food (especially canned goods) might be perfectly fine even way beyond the date suggested, so don´t just toss it out. Look, smell and common sense will tell you if your pantry item is still eatable or not. Love the video and good tips!
I guess if the item was unused for a couple of years, chances are we will not use them in the next year too. And by that time it will go bad for sure. We just kind of skip that 1 year of storage.
This is a good list especially for those new to decluttering and who don't know where to start. One thing to BUY is a shredder. That helps keep the paper problems to a minimum.
@@AtoZenLifeI knew you'd have one! 🤗 Not enough people own shredders. So important even just for protecting your personal information. But it's great to have one as part of your "paper processing" system.
We just had a garage sale and everything was priced to clear. I wanted things gone over making money. Everything was in good condition and quality. We made $400! The kids loved it!
I love using up old (but not yet expired) food. I always think of it as 'free' food. I know it's not really free, but it's better to use what you have than pay more. A few days ago we had a dinner of leftovers and things I had small amounts of in the freezer. My children loved it and said it was like a party.
I used to be a yarn hoarder but I had a health crisis for two years and didn't get out much. I crocheted 20 blankets during that time and when I was well I gave them all to friends, family and charity. Now I just keep one shelf of yarn, but I'm glad I had all that to keep me occupied .
Yeah, the pandemic also helped to reduce my craft stash :) I actually donated a lot of yarn because at this time of my life I rather sew for my kids, but to be prepared for hobbies if something stops you to go out is actually reducing stress for me.
Shoes are so difficult. Work, summer, winter, leisure, hike, camp, swim, lounge… and the older you get, the more picky your feet are in various situations. I’ve edited a…lot, but still keep necessary shoewear and also cookware. Still working on my emotional attachments to non-essential items. At this point in my life I live in a room with shared kitchen at my sister’s house and have a storage that is basically my garage for rec activities but is also overwhelmed with memories that tangibly prove some self worth but I know are no longer valid. Baby steps. Thanks for your insight. Enjoying your content.
If it’s good linen keep a spare set , one night you might get ill. I need to change the bedding. Be too tired to do the washing and if you are on that is a problem, if you only have one set of bedding, speaking from bitter experience
One does not simply toss away the 4 hours work week 😂 Books is definately a hard one for me! As always, love your channel and content! Our planet would be so much better if more people started to embrace the advices you share!
When my washing machine tub broke and began flooding my laundry room and kitchen, I was VERY glad I had a cabinet of old towels. I used 21 towels to soak up water before it ruined my hardwood floors or flowed into the carpeted living room.
FWIW you might try a super-absorbent microfiber towel, the heavy duty kind that car wash places use. They absorb a lot and there is one in the bottom of our bathroom closet for just such an emergency. I'm glad for you that you had those towels!
Thank you for mentioning throwing things away. I had done a big Marie Kondo last year, and I had boxes and boxes of stuff piled up. I don't drive. I asked for friends to give me a ride to the thrift store, and that never happened, and I called many charities to come pick up items and never found one that came to my area. I joined a facebook group where you can list things for free, and that didn't work out either. Eventually my friend said to throw it out. And I said that it's very bad for the environment, and most of it was perfectly good stuff someone could use. So my friend said, but at what mental cost? It's been stressing you out for months, and it's just sitting there making you miserable. I give you permission to throw it away. Imagine the relief and what you can do to help others once that mental burden is gone. So for anyone reading this, I also give you permission.
I used to have between 25-30 pairs of shoes 3 years ago. Since I started minimizing in 2021, I have now reduced my shoes down to 6 pairs! It's the first time in my life I actually wear all of my shoes and I feel so much lighter and less guilty! Thanks for the inspirational video, I enjoy watching your channel every week :)
Here we go to the library every Saturday. There is a playroom for kids, storytelling and they can take up to 5 books till 15 days. We go every week spend quality time together, play, read and get books to entertain for the week without pay a penny. 🎉
Why I save some shoes is hoping I get smaller legs from having lymphodema and won't have to buy new shoes. You spend wonderful moments online and are so helpful to others. Thank you for this!
Okay. This is the 3rd video I'm watching here. Discovered this channel this morning. And this has helped tons already. I already filled 2 boxes of stuff to donate in less then an hour. First time a minimalism/decluterring channel has really really helped. Thank you SO much.
My husband and I just bought our first house and are still in the process of unpack and cleaning out our old rental. I’ve decluttered so many things over the years, but it’s still amazing how much there is still left to declutter. It’s been completely overwhelming, especially as I’m pregnant with our second child and have so little energy. I didn’t have time or energy to sort through items before we moved, so now unpacking has become even more of a process.
I just dropped by to tell you that you're doing an amazing job! Taking care of a child and moving while being pregnant sounds super stressful so keep in mind that you are allowed to rest and have a little me time. :)
You've inspired me to get rid of so so much "stuff". I do want to live a simple life. I have 5 pairs of shoes. No more magazines, i just dont buy those anymore. I also got rid of all the emotional stuff holding me back since my mum passed 2 years ago. Thank you for helping me on my journey.🌸🌸🌸🌸
I don’t have any shoes but I do have 2 pairs of winter boots. I have a neuropathy on my feet for 25 years. I did keep my shoes stored for about 20 years but then donated them. I use the boots only a few times in the winter when I can’t use my power wheelchair. I use a lot of socks. My neuropathy is so painful that shoes are not an option. Now I will think of the neuropathy as a blessing because I have no shoes to declutter. Lol. Truthfully when I wore shoes the most I have ever had was less than a half of a dozen. Thank you so much for your videos, they are very well done and enjoyable to listen to. ❤
after recent decluttering i had just three pairs of shoes and that was far too few. i added two pairs and now have to find two more that i definitely need (something open for summertime and a new pair of sneakers as my current one will need replacement soon)
This is a wonderful video. You do more than state the obvious, and every time I think, “ She can’t possibly come up with new or more ideas on decluttering”, you do. ❤
I have three pairs of shoes--one pair of sandals for summer, one pair of ankle boots for winter and one pair of AllBirds which serves as year round footwear. It's taken me years to reach this level. I started working towards minimalism in 2008 and am now happily 90% of the way towards where and how I want to live. (In case you're wondering, I used to have 19 pairs of boots alone and 26 pairs of other styles. I'm much happier now. )
I’ve reach my I’ve had it moment and have the urge to do it “all” right now; I had to tell myself to slow down and get rid of the things I can today, and continue on the next day and the next. We just went through a box as tall as I was full of shoes for just myself, and I kept 3. It was eye opening that my fantasy self never wore 99% of the shoes I bought for my fantasy scenarios that I needed them for
Getting books out of the house is definitely the toughest one for us. I managed to move a few along when i packed one of our bookcases for moving, but the other bookcases i just packed whole because we'll have to soul search on some of the books. It's not always easy to decide you're fine with a book and if you know you can't get it at the library (we have a lot of classic sci fi and fantasy, definitely not what you see at the library or the bookshop) letting it go isn't simple. The kids books are a bit easier, but having said that my mum held onto all my and my brother's dr seuss books and it was an instant amazing library for both my kids. I was so happy to read those books again and not have to buy them. I think books is very personal and it doesn't fall into the "clutter" category to me like, say, unused kitchen appliances or clothes does
For a family of 4. I have 4 bath towels. 4 beach towels. 2 cleaning towels. 4 hand towels. Our house is too small to have guests, so no guest towels. I have never been in a situation where I needed more towels. If a towel gets soiled- I wash it right away. Same with sheets. I have winter sheets and summer sheets- one set of each. Even with little kids I’ve never been in a situation when I needed more. ❤
The missing container without the lid is usually being used as a drawer organizer somewhere in the house so i try to keep them together in the drawer now with the lid nesting under the container. In the past I would kick myself for getting rid of a lid or container missing mate I would invariably find it later and regret throwing out the other part
Marissa, would you consider doing a video on how to help those that are very sentimental declutter? We tried to do a family declutter (clothing only) with my 3 and just-turned 7 year old and he had such a hard time. He's a very sensitive little soul and just could not part with his outgrown winter jacket from last year. We want to be supportive and respect his feelings but also want to make sure he learns the important life skill of letting things go. When when he was 5, he'd want to hold on to the shoes her had outgrown for his own kids someday!
As a deeply sentimental person, I feel you on this. ❤️ I think this video would be helpful for deciding what to keep versus what to get rid of: ruclips.net/video/QKwR9fw5qN0/видео.htmlsi=wnc_OA_JzJk9ostx It’s been a while since I made this video, so please watch it yourself first to make sure it’s child appropriate - if so, maybe share with your kids 🙏
I also decluttered Kids Arts and papers with my kids here: ruclips.net/video/6vzpbuZhca0/видео.htmlsi=24bX6kzTn0HNywB3 They might like seeing other kids in action 💪
For instruction manuals, I've created a file in my phone that has a link to the online instructions so there's no need to keep the physical ones. I've since added a printed sheet for my home binder which has QR codes (along with contact and login info) to instruction manuals, warranties, utilities and other bills. Just in case they're ever wiped from my phone somehow. You can fit so much on a single sheet. For paper stacks I have a tiny portable & adjustable shredder that fits perfectly on top of a recycled box. It's right next to my file and recycle boxes so I can get each thing done as I go rather than sorting into piles and then backtracking to complete each task. Boom, boom, boom! Done! I know it's not groundbreaking but hopefully this info is helpful to someone.
Very happy to report that I currently have a single pair of tennis shoes (they've survived several years only because I go barefoot whenever shoes aren't absolutely necessary, lol). My weakness is definitely books, but I've been on a quest the last few years to read everything on my shelves and let go of the ones I know I won't read again. Finally got down to just under three shelves' worth of books on a five-shelf bookcase!
I decluttered most of my stuff and I´m really happy about it. Except for shoes, my guilty pleasure - 75 pairs. Some of them are pretty old but in great condition. I take care of them thoroughly. I wear them all. It´s the process, I try not to buy a new one. My excuse is that I live in a place where we have 4 seasons. In other areas, I behave more reasonably and as a minimalist🙂
Yes, yes, yes to using the library. I feel like people want to keep maybe 5-10% of the books that they want to read, but we are conditioned to buy books instead of lending them from the library
A lot of libraries have more than just books too. My library has books, ebooks, audios books, eaudio books, CDs, LPs, DVDs, Blu-rays, they even have a streaming service (limited to 7 things a month). All for free~~~ ❤ It's also got events there- Story times, stuff just for teens, a chess club, fitness programs, craft programs, etc. Also free.
Thank you@@megancata1 and @ KittenCasserole! Libraries need all the love we can get! Many libraries even check out things like Cake pans and fishing gear!
I switched to borrowing from the library with my ereader too! I only buy books now that I truly love. I never really read books more than once so it started making zero sense spending all that money for one time use
Since right before lockdown, those little neighboorhood booksharing shelves have popped up everywhere around where I live, and then in lockdown they became super popular. I've not bought many books in the few years, I find one from a sharing shelve, read it and return it to a sharing shelve again. Books that I owned that I didn't need to keep anymore also found a place on one of those little free libraries. It's brilliant and such a low effort! I pass three of those shelves weekly without going out of my way.
@meisjeViv yes to this!! I used to go to the library all the ,time at our old place but when we moved middle of covid, the library was not really a thing so I never got in a groove going there. Every pop up book share shelf I take from and have a stack I read in my truck ready to leave at them when I come across them. I love it cuz I never have to panic about forgetting books and late fees.
I used to have a lot of shoes that I had a hard time getting rid of. After injuring my Achilles, many of my shoes just didn't fit comfortably. Not only have my feet changed, but I realised how important a well fitting pair of shoes is for avoiding pain. I actually now wear a full size larger than what I previously wore. I am hoping to sell a pair of Mukluks but all my other shoes I was able to throw out or donate.
I barely throw out any expired food. The majority of products dont go bad way beyond the expiration date. Anyhow: The key is to keep track of what you have stored. With condiments I also try to use them up but I can also see why this mindset is making it hard for me to declutter. I have always been a bit of a food hoarder and just when I was making progress the pandemic and the war in Ukraine have shifted my mind greatly in terms on what amounts of food I consider "reasonable" to keep at home.
I buy a lot of books from second-hand bookshops (most of what I like to read is not readily available in libraries although I always check the library catalogue before buying a book) but I have a designated shelf space for 'new' (i.e. unread) books and I only buy a book if I can fit it into that space. My difficulty is in getting rid of books as I do reread a lot. At the start of this year, I began reviewing all my books on Goodreads and my rule is that any book rating 3 stars or fewer gets donated and I have to come up with a good reason to keep a 4* read. It's amazing how much easier it has made it to get rid of books.
I think around the time I started decluttering with you about a year ago, I had a partially knitted (i.e. just the waistband) summer sweater that had sat unfinished on the needles for about 10 years and two moves between two countries and three states! I finally did get honest with myself about that one...and pulled the yarn off the needles. Clearly this sweater wasn't happening! I have also donated extra hangers and use the hangers we have to limit how many clothes any of us keep. Extra towels and linens went just last month. I've been able to let go of books I "should read" and borrow from the library the ones I actually do want to read. I keep just a few boxes for clothing and gear swaps but they have to fit in their designated section of the guest room closet. I periodically delete/back up on computer the extra photos from my phone. Your channel has been life changing for me. Thank you so much.
I had also a knitting project I just got rid of. Instead of a Poncho it’s just a cape for my kids to play with now. Actually it should have been a breastfeeding poncho. The kids are 5 and 3.5 now. It’s sometimes difficult to give up those projects but really a relief.
You made me count my shoes. 16, and a couple are on the chopping block. I have a shoe organizer and all my shoes, with the exception of my hiking boots, and possible new winter boots, must fit in it or I will have to declutter a pair. That’s my limit. I never have shoes laying about because they have a home. Yea!!
23 pairs of shoes and i dont think thats excessive. I love shoes. I dont have a lot of clothes so shoes are my main way of accessorising. I have one pair of nike dunk highs for weight lifting, 6 different coloured flats, 2 pairs of paladium military boots, 2 pairs of paladium shoes that are ankle length, 1 merry people gumboots, 1 doc marten boots, one doc marten platform sandals, 1 pair of steel capped leather work boots, one pair of trainers for running, 2 casual white shoes (one high top one slouch top) one pair of good fancy red boots for best, one pair of dress slides for formal occasions and another pair of doc martens that are pink with polkadots, two casual pairs of skate shoes and one pair of tennis shoes. Theyre all vastly different in style, function and colour depending on if i feel fancy or outgoing or just plain/casual. I dont buy cheap shoes so these are the same shoes ive had for a decade and will continue to have for the next decade. Some things as minimalists we keep by a rule of count and others we keep by a rule of container so whatever comfortably fits in its allocated space. This is the number of shoes that perfectly fits in my cupboard so im quite happy for shoes to be the one thing i habe excess of.
Gift ribbons and bows…🎀 My mum used to buy tons of that stuff and I did, too. Every color, shiny-metallic, bast, velvet, big, small,…🙈🤷🏻♀️ Then there were less and less gifts to make. Kids grew up and preferred money, people passed away. So we both were literally sitting on our stuff. Mum came up with the idea of not buying string anymore. Sometimes it looked so odd but it was very colorful. I still have a big box left after years.
After 2 or 3 years learning the art of declutter this fall/winter my 4 yo has: 1pair of sneaker to daycare, 1pair of warmer boots for the cold days, 1 pair of wellies, 1 pair of inside shoes like fluffy unicorn pantufas and 1 pair of flip-flops for swimming classes. And it going very well. Dressing time is drama free! 😂
I know I have under 20 pairs of shoes/boots/sandals. I’m pretty picky with the ones I thrift or buy new, but I like variety and I’m super eclectic. I actually just went through my closet and was able to have that hard talk with myself about what I actually wear and what I liked the idea of. I donated a huge bag! And I also went through my project pile (clothes diys and such) and had another hard talk with myself about time and how much I’d actually wear. It feels great. I have other categories I’m working on too. I’ll definitely never be a minimalist, but I can make my maximalist more manageable😊
Thank you for this video! I just decluttered our pantry today and it was easy to simply go through the expiry dates - no sorting or mental energy wasted here.
I just started watching and could not wait to comment. I was trying to read your shirt and it hit me like a lightning bolt (not that lightning bolt ⚡). I have that very same shirt. It is one of many HP shirts that bring me joy.
Whoah!! I really needed this today!! I paused your video and counted my shoes: 26 pairs! 🤦♀ To be fair to myself, 5 are military (I still need some of them) and 5 are heels on a shelf that I needed when my spouse was in the military (only 3 months into retirement) and I had to wear the dress (🙄) to certain functions. So, I also need to get rid of the ball gowns. 🤔🥳 Thank you!! 💯
11 pairs of footwear. 7 pairs sandals - I live in California☀️, 2 pairs boots and 2 pairs tennis shoes - one of which is specifically for walking/exercise. But please don’t ask about purses & totes…it’s a lot. I also have a large number of reusable bags for shopping.
I am delighted that for quite a few of these I'm already on it. I still have some things I need to work on though! Thanks for that decluttr link. Such a great video, thank you!
I own 28 pairs of shoes, but certainly don’t wear that many regularly 🤔 Your son is so pleased with himself 😂I remember when my brother went thru that phase back in the day. 🙂 I’d just like to add to your extensive list of useful tips that most libraries also offer digital content on apps where you can check out audio or text materials to listen to or consume on a reader device. I use ours frequently and it’s very popular. You can even place holds, and many items are new releases. Also, re: old phones, some companies like Apple offer a take-back program to keep those unused chip-containing devices out of landfill. I used this to dispose of my last phone. 🌿
I keep our boxes and save them for a friend who has a webshop. Once in a while she collects everything and use them again to send out orders... great solution i think!
I have work shoes, gym shoes, heeled boots, winter boots, sandals, sliders for around the house and white going-out trainers. I have 3 handbags and own 1 suitcase and own 2 purses which might think that's a lot but it isn't and it works for me🙂
Hi Marissa! I own... 2 pair of black running shoes that I use every day (not in the middle of the winter) + powerwalks. 1 pair of black old running shoes that I use when painting, working in moms garden aso. 1 pair of black rainboots in neoprene, lined and suitable for winter to. 1 pair of black classic leather chelsea boots for colder weather. 1 pair of black nice higher leather winterboots. 1 pair of black summer sandals. aaaand... 1 pair of black swimming shoes for winterbaths and if it´s rocks on the bottom of the sea. So, 8 pairs of shoes. I want a pair of nice "going out" shoes and I am thinking of getting rid of my nice high winterboots. All my shoes are in exellent condition, I always take very good care of them.
I've always preferred hand bags over shoes! I own 8 pairs of shoes 👞 Three are black flip flops, two are sandals each in a different colour plus joggers, fancy gumboots, and some black dressy/office shoes.
6 pairs of shoes: 1 hiker snowboots, 1 sandals, 1 dressy shoes, 1 water shoes, 1 casual all terrain ankle boot, and 1 casual everyday hiking/exersize/walking/pretty much everything else shoes....Keens. 😊 Love your channel!!!!
I rarely save small boxes or really big boxes, but the medium size cardboard boxes are great as a donatable donate box like Dana K. White recommends. But I have to be realistic and recycle the ones that don't make good donation boxes.
9 pairs of shoes! I had to rebuild my shoe collection gradually after all of mine had to be tossed out from a mold problem after excessive rains earlier this year
These are all great tips.I especially like the way you give good explanations of WHY it's so worthwhile to declutter these items as well as what to do with the items you're getting rid of. Also, I find it helpful to think in terms of the confinement principle. I keep little boxes and acrylic boxes and the like for the time when a little reorganization gives them a use.But I have a limited space that they're allowed to occupy, after which they just have to go.
This is a great theme and thank you! It all comes down to one essential thing-buy responsibly. About getting rid of expired food: First of all, wasting food makes no sense to me as there are so many people who have very little or nothing to eat. I prefer whole food rather than processed food, meaning nothing in cans and boxes. Occasionally, I buy a can of tomato sauce and use it on the same day. I buy fresh veggies and protein but only according to the meals I plan to make for about 5 days. Rice doesn't go bad. About my shoes: I have a total of 5 pairs of shoes: 2 pairs of walking shoes, 1 pair of running/gym shoes, 1 pairs of dress shoes, and 1 pair of rubber boots for rain/snow. I never like the idea of having extra things and don't believe in having "just in case" items because "just in case" never happens. If it does, too bad.😊
19 pairs, including slippers. Thanks for asking. This was my first time counting. I could get rid of 3-4 pairs but they're for special occasions, funerals, or too cute/unique to part with at this time.
Cooler weather and approaching winter has me in a "sort through and downsize everything" mood. So many good points here and I will be revisiting this video as I make my way through the house. Wanted to say, the get rid of hangers advice is so important. I have donated many hangers and it definitely helps me to decide up front.....how many pants do I need? how many blouses? how many second layer jackets/cardigans? how many coats?...and then limit myself to that number of hangers. Those are the things I hang and the rest lives in drawers. I have extra hangers in both guest bedrooms, so I will never run short if I really need one more. Oh, and I have two shelves in the bottom of my closet that help me limit the number of shoes too.
Thank you so much for mentioning decluttr! My ex hoarded these and I have had no idea what to do with them. The worst of them I actually already paid to dispose of properly but even if nothing I have left works I can get a pretty decent amount for it all here 😁
I constantly go through all my drawers in my bedroom to get rid of stuff I'm not using. Especially when seasons change and I see what I didn't wear. I also pull makeup I don't use as well as skincare and other beauty or health products.
I have 5 pairs of winter boots (I live in Québec, Canada), 3 pairs of fancy boots, 5 pairs of sandales, 4 pairs of running shoes plus 7 pairs of shoes!! 😅 BTW I don't think you talk too much, I love your videos the way they are 😊!
Thank you for the inspirational videos. I have 70pairs of shoes inc slippers and boots and high heels and here there are 4 distinctive seasons I know its to much, but hear me out I bought 11pairs in Italy from closing down store sale for 15-20e each leather pair shoes. They are ocasional and will be withme for a long time. Regarding magazines, I dont keep older than 2years magazines, and those what I have I keep in the pile near bed to read for the times when I will not feel very energetic and unwell. If not reading at least analizing beautiful photos in the magazines.
Ten pair shoes total : One pair each of : running shoes ; water shoes ; biking shoes ; winter boots ; tennis shoes ; gardening clogs ; muck boots. Two pairs of sandals, and one pair of Mary Janes I keep at work to wear there 😊 But I really do need to move those biking shoes…. Thanks for the reminder! 😉
I have 4 pair of shoes. One for work, one for workouts, one for most of the year and one pair of winter boots. I bought an good quality handbag for six years ago and it still looks brand new and it’s the only one I have

I live I scotland & we were badly hit by flooding. It is amazing how everyone came together to donate their unused stuff to the flood victims.
Love that ❤️
When people can associate "helping others" to their donations it makes it so much easier to declutter more ruthlessly. ❤
Hi Sarah. I am in Edinburgh, hope you are ok where you are!
@@roxannegillis3925 I am too, we seem to have been the luckiest in the country. Hope everyone is ok.
Thank you for a clear and simple list. Love it!
Thank you.
That’s amazing progress, cheering you on as you figure out your wardrobe as well 📣 🙏
@@AtoZenLifethank you.
(also I have problem areas, mainly books, so it's not like I don't have work to do)
@@YasmeenKhan That's me too 🤣
I'm thinking my closet is all nice and decluttered, my dresser is the same!
I used to have 120 pairs but have been slowly selling them and donating and wearing some out in the last 5-6 years. I’m now down to 30-something.
Thanks so much 😂 I’m sure he’d love the compliment! And glad to have you here.
@AtoZenLife please pass my comment on to him! I just found him so funny! I have a son about his age too, equally as comical!🤩🤩
@@AyeshaShaSha Just did, he says “thank you” 😌😂 So modest.
Wow! Did it feel good to get rid of the extras? More space?
Oh wow! Did you wear all of them or were some pairs still unused?
@@meisjeViv yes exactly!
that is BRILLIANT. I can easily do it today! Super thanks for an action step that is easy and immediate.
I check it myself, my family does the same and we never had trouble. As long as its smells, looks and tastes fine, it's fine to me
This is a good list especially for those new to decluttering and who don't know where to start. One thing to BUY is a shredder. That helps keep the paper problems to a minimum.
YES! You can see ours in the lower level, next to the box hoard 🫣. I like papers there and husband shreds them.
@@AtoZenLifeI knew you'd have one! 🤗 Not enough people own shredders. So important even just for protecting your personal information. But it's great to have one as part of your "paper processing" system.
Yesss! A paper shredder is such a good thing to buy :) I just got one last year and it's wonderful :)
Indeed! I bought mine some years ago and it made a big difference!
@@merchepaar 😊❤️
We just had a garage sale and everything was priced to clear. I wanted things gone over making money. Everything was in good condition and quality. We made $400! The kids loved it!
That’s amazing, and great learning experience for the kids ❤️❤️❤️
1 thing Marissa inspired me was to own 1 set of linen. Just wash it early in the morning on its laundry day. Best advice ever.
If it’s good linen keep a spare set , one night you might get ill. I need to change the bedding. Be too tired to do the washing and if you are on that is a problem, if you only have one set of bedding, speaking from bitter experience
Oh yes never thought of getting sick to that level.😅 I guess covid taught me nothing.
One does not simply toss away the 4 hours work week 😂
Books is definately a hard one for me!
Why couldn’t your friend (who knew it was stressing you out) drive you to a thrift store to get rid of it?
@@lyndseymurray2066 she also does not drive. At the time I only knew 3 people who drove who lived here.
Empty box hoarder here also! My husband is definitely a help here to get rid of them. :D
So glad you found me and good luck with your decluttering journey 🙌
We used our old socks to pack glasses for our move! This really works great. After that I donated or disposed them.
I use old socks to dust around the house.
I have five pairs of shoes: Doc Martins, Uggs, athletic sneakers, flats, and flip flops... all in black. That covers everything year-round for me :D
after recent decluttering i had just three pairs of shoes and that was far too few. i added two pairs and now have to find two more that i definitely need (something open for summertime and a new pair of sneakers as my current one will need replacement soon)
This is a wonderful video. You do more than state the obvious, and every time I think, “ She can’t possibly come up with new or more ideas on decluttering”, you do. ❤
Thanks so much for your kind words and for watching 😄
As a drawer organizer. Smart! You've just given me a great idea. Thanks!
❤️ I think this video would be helpful for deciding what to keep versus what to get rid of: ruclips.net/video/QKwR9fw5qN0/видео.htmlsi=wnc_OA_JzJk9ostx
It’s been a while since I made this video, so please watch it yourself first to make sure it’s child appropriate - if so, maybe share with your kids 🙏
I also decluttered Kids Arts and papers with my kids here: ruclips.net/video/6vzpbuZhca0/видео.htmlsi=24bX6kzTn0HNywB3
They might like seeing other kids in action 💪
These years You have been here has much improved my life !❤
For instruction manuals, I've created a file in my phone that has a link to the online instructions so there's no need to keep the physical ones.
I had over 100 pairs of shoes I’m down to about 40 now and will be decluttering more
Yes, yes, yes to using the library.
😂 the boxes! Thank you for the push to get rid of them
I have a bit of a shoe problem in spite of decluttering most of my home. Excluding rollerskates and slippers, I have 39 pairs.
That’s amazing progress, thanks so much for sharing with me 🙌

I had also a knitting project I just got rid of. Instead of a Poncho it’s just a cape for my kids to play with now. Actually it should have been a breastfeeding poncho. The kids are 5 and 3.5 now. It’s sometimes difficult to give up those projects but really a relief.
You made me count my shoes. 16, and a couple are on the chopping block. I have a shoe organizer and all my shoes, with the exception of my hiking boots, and possible new winter boots, must fit in it or I will have to declutter a pair. That’s my limit. I never have shoes laying about because they have a home. Yea!!
Your gorgeous boy doing his party trick! 😂🥰
He’s so proud of himself 😂

Addicted to your videos
This is a healthy addiction that I approve of 😎
I actually use old socks for cleaning up dust. Just put them on my hands and swipe off all the dust.
Me too, a pair of fuzzy slipper socks. Works great 👍🏻
Gift ribbons and bows…🎀 My mum used to buy tons of that stuff and I did, too.
Oooh boxes 🤤 i love them🙈
I just started watching and could not wait to comment. I was trying to read your shirt and it hit me like a lightning bolt (not that lightning bolt ⚡). I have that very same shirt. It is one of many HP shirts that bring me joy.
That's awesome, I've had mine for years! 🪄 😉
I own 28 pairs of shoes, but certainly don’t wear that many regularly 🤔
Your son is so pleased with himself 😂I remember when my brother went thru that phase back in the day. 🙂
I’d just like to add to your extensive list of useful tips that most libraries also offer digital content on apps where you can check out audio or text materials to listen to or consume on a reader device.
I'm also a box hoarder 😆they might need for something 😁Thank you for the video, inspiring ❤
I hoard not only boxes, but containers of all kinds, especially the unusual or clever ones. A definite weakness.
Thank you for mentioning animal shelters! :)
Excellent tips.
6 pairs of shoes:
1 hiker snowboots,
1 sandals,
1 dressy shoes,
1 water shoes,
1 casual all terrain ankle boot,
and 1 casual everyday hiking/exersize/walking/pretty much everything else shoes....Keens.
😊
Love your channel!!!!
Thanks so much for sharing 😁❤️
Maybe someone has already mentioned this but dry cleaners will often take your old hangers. My local dry cleaner even has a bin you can leave them in.
Great tip 🙌
So agree! ❤👍 7 pair shoes and boots: 2 pair black leather loafers, 1 pair winter boots, 2 pair summer sandals, 1 pair running shoes and 2 dressy sandals.
THANK YOU ... i love the frying pan u recommended. Bought a 2nd frtng pan on sale on PRIME DAY
19 pairs, including slippers. Thanks for asking. This was my first time counting. I could get rid of 3-4 pairs but they're for special occasions, funerals, or too cute/unique to part with at this time.
Thanks for sharing 🙏
Me too!! Maybe we feel that it's time to let things go, just as the trees let go of their leaves...
Another great video. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching 🙏
Thank you so much for mentioning decluttr! My ex hoarded these and I have had no idea what to do with them. The worst of them I actually already paid to dispose of properly but even if nothing I have left works I can get a pretty decent amount for it all here 😁
40 pairs of shoes… can’t wait for a 2024 declutter!
I constantly go through all my drawers in my bedroom to get rid of stuff I'm not using. Especially when seasons change and I see what I didn't wear. I also pull makeup I don't use as well as skincare and other beauty or health products.
Love your Pink Floyd tees.
Thanks so much for sharing and for the support 😄
Thank you for the inspirational videos. I have 70pairs of shoes inc slippers and boots and high heels and here there are 4 distinctive seasons I know its to much, but hear me out I bought 11pairs in Italy from closing down store sale for 15-20e each leather pair shoes. They are ocasional and will be withme for a long time.
Regarding magazines, I dont keep older than 2years magazines, and those what I have I keep in the pile near bed to read for the times when I will not feel very energetic and unwell. If not reading at least analizing beautiful photos in the magazines.
How about decluttering the liqueur cabinet
I have 19 pairs of shoes, including garden shoes, walking shoes and that covers shoes for all seasons (sandals to boots). More than I need!
