What I stopped doing or buying:
    1. hairspray
    2. make-up
    3. perfume
    4. air travel
    5. new clothes (I sew, knit and upcycle or buy second hand)
    6. jewellery
    7. magazines
    8. new books (I buy them second hand or borrow them from the library)
    9. gift wrapping paper and single use ribbons (I've sewn gift bags and use fabric ribbons and reuse both)
    10. fabric softener, dryer sheets, laundry perfume etc. (laundry detergent is enough!)

I've accepted my age instead of trying to ignore it. I'm in my 70s and retired and up until a few years ago I was doing all my yardwork and gardening "to save money". I was having some health problems at the time and became very heat intolerent. I gave myself permission to hire help with some of the heavier tasks and only do what I can now without wearing myself out. Things are so much more enjoyable now. 😊

I can relate. I am 68 and have problematic arthritis in my neck, because of an old injury. It is worse in the winter. I have become vegan and have given up gluten, which really helps. People really think that is crazy, but it really really helps. However, I still was expecting too much of myself. Now I realize that I am going to have to do less deep cleaning in the winter time, and have come up with a schedule to keep my home very neat and clean with a bit of daily work. My husband always helps. I can no longer babysit grandchildren on a regular basis. It is just too hard for me. I switch to hand sewing in a recliner, with my head supported, rather than sitting at a sewing machine. I have stopped doing some things, such as feeding the birds outside, and adopting more pets. I have enough pets already. I shop less and buy less. I sit down and relax when I have to. I only have 1 house plant, and I only plant one pot outside in the front, and one in the back, in the spring. Getting rid of lots of things has definitely made my life easier. It is much easier to care for my home, which is my goal. It is okay to sit down, read, watch a movie, snuggle with the dog , hand sew, or play my guitar. Years of caring for children, going to school, going to work, studying, and keeping house, make it hard to accept that I can do what I want now, and it is okay!! It is also okay to just donate things!!! It is also okay to keep what I want, such as several sewing machines, and several guitars, as long as I have space for them and can keep them neat. In short, I am trying to accept who I am, and enjoy life. I am also trying to listen to my kids and grandkids, I mean really listen, and show and express my love for them openly. I am trying to change some of the negative narrative in my head, which comes from a bad childhood, and realize that, "the prison door is open and I can walk out." So you see, I am busy and have a lot of work to do!!! These videos really help and inspire me!! Also my hair is white as snow and I have earned it.

Is it though? I mean, I totally get it: The news can stress one out easily these days. And it's of course a valuable goal to be more relaxed and balanced... however I think it's problematic for a society if more and more people just switch themselves off from the world. I have no solution for that - it just worries me if this seems to be the only attainable way to take for so many of us.@@AtoZenLife And furthermore: Not listening to the news is quite a privilege as well, because it means that you are safe and not in the midst of the many crises there are.

I had guests recently for the weekend and they kept requesting I make another pot of coffee. After they left I found half-finished cups of coffee all over the place! It was a minor annoyance and they only visit once a year. But it seemed odd to me. If I pour a cup of good coffee, I finish it and put the empty in the sink with soapy water.

I grew up in a British descent household - tea, tea, and more tea... and hot chocolate. My mother is a bit on the hippie side, so it was herbal tea. I pretty caffeine sensitive, so I'll have a Starbucks drink 2-3 times a week on average with half or none of the espresso in it. I know I could save money by not doing that, it's just a little treat thing that my husband and I do for each other. When things were tight, a Starbucks run once or twice a month was just our little treat for ourselves and a little bit of luxury. We're branching out to some little local coffee shops as well, usually a once week visit on the weekend or something.

Research shows that the dopamine hit is gone really quickly after purchase of most impulse purchases. So the recommendation is to pick up the item, really enjoy it for a moment, get the hit, then have a chat with yourself about how that's the most enjoyment you're going to get from it, how it's just going to clutter your house, and how you'd rather save the money and not dust around the decor item (or you dont really need another shirt etc etc). Then put it back, and know you got all the joy from interacting with it in the store without having to take it home.

Not only does it save you money and protect you from harmful chemicals, it's also so enormously liberating. It allows you to take control and show other women and girls that ageing is ok and a thing to be proud of. There are a lot of IG and FB sites for support, highly recommend them. I'm a minimalist who uses bright colors! I get irritated that people think the only option is gray (🤢) or neutral for calm and clean. You can have color and still have clear surfaces. You just have to know yourself and what you like😊

I have neutrals in the bedroom--It's so soothing to me. A waaarm white and a soft grey. But in the living room, my couch is red, and my art is lots of rich blues and reds. I find that warm and inviting. But I totally respect people's desire for whatever colour palette pleases them.

I am naturally a more minimalistic person, but I have struggled with the notion that I am a boring, uninteresting person if I don't own the stuff (books, movies, decor, etc) to showcase personality. So I have invested too much time and money in thrifting things, that I genuinely do like but do not need or use (usually), just to feel good about myself and impress the guests (that almost never come to house) 😅 so a couple of your points really hit home for me today.

I amaze myself that I can spend 40 minutes finding others things I'd rather do than taking the 5-10 minutes doing something I don't want to! And although I may be older than you (coming up on 54 in December), I stopped coloring my hair in October 2017. I just got so sick and tired of chasing the grays every 3 weeks and I now I have a much healthier scalp, healthier hair and more money in the bank! Also, I do try to spend more intentionally and lastly, I stopped caring what other people think as well. No matter what you do, someone will always find something "wrong" with you to criticize you for so just continue to stay true to your beautiful self💕💕

Growing out my hair has been so liberating! Saving a ton of $$$ and time in the salon chair. People stop me on the street now to ask me where I got the silver steaks done. Mother Nature Salon! No leftovers in this house. Perhaps not practical for everyone but leftover food gives you the calories needed but is very hard to digest and produces fatigue. Freshly prepared food every day; a blessing. Words of wisdom from Dad: “If you can’t pay cash you can’t afford it.”

I'm not kidding when I say that little chip scene cut is the classiest editing I've seen on RUclips.
Coffee is really the only thing on here that applies to me, but I'd like to add to that even more:
Basically any beverage that costs more than water from the tap. In either money or time, could be a consideration for discontinuing.
I used to have a pretty nasty soda habit (and still struggle sometimes with bouts of buying it), but ended up opting for those little drink packets, instead. It's saving me money, yes, but there is still a time cost in mixing things up (seems silly to point out, but it adds up), and it's really not great for you so there is a hidden health cost in there, somewhere.
So I'm starting to ask myself "would I rather spend this money/time on something else?" I'm buying the drink packets with intention, but now I'm working on the thought shift to buying with BETTER intention. It's a process.
Eventually I'll tackle the issue where I drink an entire pot of coffee per day. But this year I quit smoking and energy drinks so I think I'm doing pretty darn good!

During the Covid lockdown and so many places were closed, I allowed my hair to grow to its natural color (grey), I stopped a lot of the volunteering that seemed to run my life, and I actually learned that it was okay to slow down and choose one or two things that brought joy to my life instead of 10 or 20. I continued to downsize and challenged myself to part with things that no longer served me in my season of life. When the donation centers reopened, I made many trips. I am frugal out of necessity and intentional about the things that I bring into my home. And the biggest thing is that I am organized and at peace with my surroundings. One of my favorite things is watching videos about minimalism and organization. You, for one, are such an inspiration. Thank you.

Great ideas. I use L’Oréal Root Rescue 10minutes (15 for me) hair colour. 😅 In less than 30 minutes I color the part in my hair and surrounding area. For me it’s the best, easiest and cheapest way to keep my color, without having to pay to color it. There is enough in the thin bottle to saturate my hair. I also have always had the money to pay my credit card to receive the rewards of it. I have always saved ahead to go on vacation. That way when I get home I have nothing to worry about. I think your awesome and your videos are great. You have a way of keeping me engaged in listening to you speak. Thank you. Looking forward to your next video.

I'm a huge crafter, so now I've started doing "intentional crafting." I used to make dolls based off of characters from TV shows (I have a bin full), but now I have a smaller space. Lockdown made me realize that I own a lot of yarn and embroidery floss, which is weird since I don't embroider. I ended up finding a way of conserving crafting supplies (I couldn't buy stuffing for a while) so I started making very tiny animals that require little space. If I do knit or crochet something now, I make sure I have a purpose for it. All of my scraps end up with a purpose too, and I'm enjoying it!

Thanks dear Marissa for another fantastic vid! One tip I know about hair color for people who want to save money : henna . You can cover white hair with this natural, safe color (made of plants and who have been use in India for centuries). Just make sure you use a henna brand with a good reputation. Also : it takes longer to do than chemical colors (but if find it worth the time!). p.s English is not my first language, so sorry if I made some spelling or grammar mistakes. ;-)

Keep the gray, it will look great. I am getting some above my ears. Also reducing and stopping coffee helps my husband with his back pain. When he quits, his back bothers him for a day or two, then the regular daily pain is gone. Many of these things you mentioned we don't do, because we don't have the money to do. Now I am also growing out my grays and if I could go back, I would have never dyed my hair. The process of growing them out is difficult, but I’m sticking to it! Just so tired of the maintenance!!! You would look gorgeous with grey hair, so I would consider leaving them be! :)
