    ABOUT A TO ZEN LIFE
Along my journey to let go of 30 years of clutter, I accidentally became a minimalist and it was life-changing.
Before, I was an emotional hoarder with nothing but the clutter from lost loved ones - and $25,000 of debt - to my name. Now I have a beautiful home in Europe, a happy family, live debt-free, and - best of all - wake up to a life that I’m EXCITED to live every day.
My mission is to help you conquer your clutter and simplify YOUR way to a happier and better life. HERE'S OUR STORY: atozenlife.com/about-a-to-zen...

The right channel is not working properly, so my right headphone bud sounds find but seems like some recording issue or mixing issue or something (the clips that aren't you talking are fine) - if possible, perhaps make the sound mono? It's listenable for me but not ideal like this 🙃

Marissa, my mom had a stroke and could not swallow. She choose not to get a feeding tube. She passed away in 14 days. Because she died on a Sunday, I found your channel and became a minimalist. Because of your channel I was able to let go of her things and mine and get over the grief of her passing. So Thanks.

#16 brought back some hard memories for me. After being married for only two years at the age of 30, I took a cerebellum stroke and lost my ability to swallow. I was on a feeding tube for two months and had to take several swallowing tests before I was finally allowed to eat certain food. It took many more months before I was allowed to eat lettuce. I remember feeling so excited when I was finally told I could eat a salad with lots of dressing on it. I love how you showed compassion for the patients you worked with. Having kind people like you, helped me to handle hearing the fact that I had failed another swallowing test. My life changed after that and I saw the world differently. I saw more joy in the simple things. I’m so thankful to be here. My husband and I got through a terrible time. I’m 43 now and enjoying my life with my husband and 6 year old son. I want a simpler life so I can have more fun with my family. This video touched my heart. Thank you!

One thing I recently discovered that has been hindering me on my journey toward a minimalist lifestyle is that my frugality gets in the way. I have been frugal most of my life and that makes it difficult in parting with things that aren't broken or parts I could use to make future repairs. This has saved me money over the years, but it has come with the mental cost from holding onto things. Decluttering has made me aware of my fault and now opening to idea of repurchasing items in the future if needed with an expectation that "freedom from possessions" should be worth the exercise.

    • @trudehill8508
      @trudehill8508 4 месяца назад +2

I’m the same. I’ve already decluttered a lot with no problems, but now that we’re trying to be more frugal and watch our spending I’m finding it hard to part with things I know I’ll have to replace down the track. Even if it might be years before we need to replace it.

I can really relate to this video. I went back for my Early Childhood and Special education degree at 40 (in 2021). It was hard work, but so worth it. It also helped me to slow down and figure out who and what was important in my life. Now that I am done (and waiting on an interview for a job), I am working on getting rid of stuff and organizing so I can focus on what I want/need to do. I still have additional work to do to complete my Special Ed. certification, but that will come with time. My main focus will be my health, simplifying my house (and hopefully job when I get it), and working on relationships that matter to me!

Dear Marissa I am the patient on No. !6 of your list. If I want to have speech or physiotherapy I need to pay, it is not provided by public health, and so I don't because I don't have the money. I am 46 years old and I have a 10-year-old daughter. My every day is a struggle, more mentally than physically.
So I think that this should be No1 on your list, "Don't take anything for granted". Thank you for showing this, I wish people get it.

I watched this video soon after we got dark flooring installed all over our house except the hallway & kitchen 😮! But then, I decided to follow the other mistakes you mention like “focus on the now,” “don’t worry about what you can’t control,” 😅. I also decided to appreciate what I have and see goodness in what I have- dark floors tells me that there’s dust & dirt on the surface so, it’s a good thing knowing that I need to clean my environment 🙏

I completely agree with this dark floor thing. We had dark floors in our old place, and I vacuumed every single day, just to see all the crumbs and cat litter lying around again seconds later. Last year we moved to a new place which has light floors, and I don't feeel the urge to vacuum every day now and only clean up the spaces where cat litter and cat hair tends to accumulate.

I have made a lot of changes over a lot of years little changes and has made a big change on my overall life and our financial life. Just by doing small steps that took years to do but now we’re at another end and it’s getting easier and also building good habits is anotherbig thing. I really enjoyed your video. I joined your channel. You were very straightforward and I loved how your video turned out. Thanks so much for sharing some great tips.

Wow! I just wanted to leave a comment because I‘ve been binging your videos since the moment I doiscovered your channel just under a week ago. The fun thing is: I just realized now that you‘re a speech-language-pathologist. That made me reflect on what I‘ve been doing this last week. Funny enough, I‘m close to graduating as a speech-language-pathologist myself (or to be exact: Logopädin, the german equivalent to that). And I‘ve been basically procrastinating on finishing an over 20 page stuttering report I have to submit on sunday. Instead I‘ve kept myself busy and distracted decluttering my home, telling myself I couldn‘t concentrate with all that stuff around me anyways. But then it somehow clicked and I realized that this increasing feeling of procrastination guilt lingering back there in my brain is clutter in itself, just mental clutter. So I just sat down and powered through it and I‘ve been able to finish the whole thing! Now I feel so much lighter, just like decluttering is supposed to feel! Now I can continue on my journey feeling so much better while doing it! I‘ve been able to declutter so much stuff already and I honestly love it, not only the results but also the process itself. Thank you so much for your videos, they are so motivating and inspiring!
PS.: Your thoughts about dysphagia resonated with me so much. It just makes you so thankful and apprechiative of the abilitys and life quality you have rather than the things you surround yourself with. We as the people that bring those lifechanging good and bad news can feel in our patients how much that matters over any material things.

Marissa, I signed up for Mint Mobile just over a month ago when you suggested it. I can’t believe the savings and the coverage I get in my little rural town. Yesterday I signed up my stepdad and will be saving him money too. I probably wouldn’t have done it, had I not heard you mention it. So thanks!

Happy belated birthday! Wonderful advice! Dark floors, dark countertops, dark furnitures all have the same problem. They show crumbs, dirt, and scratches. I also like lighter wood colors and they go well together.

As someone who put in white counters and a super light floor in the kitchen, the opposite is also really difficult to deal with. I would choose mid-tone wood in future. And a speckled counter.

@@MyFocusVaries I like mid-tone wood the most. That’s what I meant when I said lighter wood color. They go well with different decorations and colors. As well as warm up any room. I currently have speckled countertop and don’t like it too much.

Thank you so much for that video. Tbh, I need to be reminded from time to time to think of all those things as things that aren't helpful for me, but instead choose to stop my real life just out of fear for the change, for what I need to do and for failing. So, to hear you say all the things I do know, but always ignore... helps me so much, 'cause it reminds me of the reasons why I should beginn to act instead of staying still.

HAHA I have dark floors (deep red glazed quarry tile) in condo we bought 20 yrs ago. thought so cool at first but yuck! so hard to clean and constantly sweeping up in the kitchen! It would take a jackhammer to get them out so just dealing, but would never recommend. thanks for all you do!

I chuckled when you said never install dark floors because I had just been thinking how much I wish you could have your natural light and gorgeous floors of your Germany home with you in your new city. And laughing at myself how you were talking about something else entirely and I was thinking about your Germany apartment floors. And then you brought up floors!
