I really enjoy your videos! I have ADD and let me tell you getting older, 60, and having ADD really is a major issue. Yesterday, it’s like this, I start cleaning off a counter. I decided I don’t need my heavy KitchenAid mixer on my counter. I look around and figure I’ll put it on my bakers rack. That means I need to clean off the piles and piles of cookbooks I have on the bakers rack. So basically all I did was move the mixer over to the middle of the counter. Haven’t touched the cookbooks yet. Got distracted with putting other things away, looking at the mail, talking to my husband, getting him coffee, doing some dishes, feeding the cats, feeding the dogs, on and on and on. The mixer will probably live in the middle of the counter for a few years now. Lol 😂

I love the idea of being ready for guests in 15 minutes. I agree, the idea of someone stopping by unannounced is one of my biggest motivations to keep my house tidy! Last summer we had some friends stop by unannounced and they were outside helping us fix our fence and I was horrified at the idea of one of them asking to come in to use the bathroom. I've been doing so much better recently with keeping my house tidy and it actually ends up being intrinsically motivating because I feel so good when my house is clean and I want to keep it that way!

We had a room off of our entry (no door) that was the formal living room. We used it as everything but that! It was my kids toy room when they were little, eventually it changed to a guest room. Over time, it became a cluttered “catch all” room that was so embarrassing! 😳🙈
We finally emptied it out completely! I’m proud to say that room is now our home theater and it gets used EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! We went all out! Tiered seating, lighted columns, movie posters, concession stand with popcorn maker, hot dog roller, shelves for candy and mini fridge! Now I don’t mind if people see inside that room because it’s awesome! My husband is beyond thrilled! He’s in there this very moment! 🙂

I started watching your videos in december and within two months, I encouraged and lead my family into cleaning up 80% of the house, purging at least 60% of our things that we have to make multiple trips to donate or throw them out. There are still areas for improvement but at least we have more floor space now, less clutter and piles. Got storage spaces to harmonize with the furniture and pull the room together. I relate to most of this list and I am happy to have leave those behind. Best thing to start the year, now working on maintaining and further purging few months down the road. Thank you!

I was born to a hoarding family. It started with my Great Grandma, then my grandma, and my Dad he just didn’t like to spend money if he already had something so he kept it forever. He was very tidy though unlike my grandmothers. Then my mom somewhere along the line became a hoarder now I battle myself regularly trying to declutter. It’s weird to hold value in things that are just junk. I have gotten a lot better than I was and I believe your videos have helped with that. I have a room right now I keep thinking about and need to make time for lol.

Being a child of a line of hoarders is so hard to change. I pray you keep going on your journey and fight the demons along the way. Keeping up with obvious trash and dedicating a small amount of time each day/week will help you not be so overwhelmed. Take pride in the little victories and don't get so hung up on a few steps backwards.

You had me at "Sign Number One: When You Think About Your Stuff Even When You Can't See It". I laughed out loud! After 42 years in a small town, where we raised six children, 25 years of those years in a big ol' house with an attic, a basement, and a whackload of storage space we moved to a much smaller house in another city to be closer to the grandkids. The new house has very little storage. In this house are two bedrooms with the intervening wall removed, turning it into one large, long room. This was to be my sewing room/office/music studio, but when we moved in it became the place where we "temporarily" put the stuff that wouldn't fit anywhere else. Five years later most of that stuff is still there, and has been joined by piles of clothing waiting to go to the thrift shop, Christmas decorations waiting to go to the storage locker, stacks of boxes filled with books and papers, etc. An overflowing mending basket sits beside the sewing machine, which sits on an inaccessible table in one corner. I have christened this space "the room of no return". Your video has motivated me to make a start! Thanks for so many good tips on maintaining an orderly, uncluttered home.

A friend's youngest daughter was just starting out housekeeping on her own. I was able to give her most of the basics and told her to pass them on to others when she upgraded. Often underserved are foster kids who age out of the system and then are expected to set up on their own from scratch. Every little bit helps when you're just starting out.

Way to call me out Kellie!! 😆 I literally was going through my utensil drawers last night and came across 2 can openers and 2 pizza cutters and couldn’t decide if I should get rid of one.

my experience of "too much stuff" is when I think I need to buy more storage bins to store stuff, that often means a new road of decluttering and in the end, I often end up with some empty storage bins. It's not always true, sometimes I buy new storage solutions but that is then often more to improve or change a system that I already have to make it more efficient and easy to store.

LITERALLY these ALLLLL described me! I am currently trying as hard as I can to declutter!!! This is something I have always struggled with because so many things either have sentimental value to me or like you had mentioned because I "MIGHT" need it one day. Anyways, thank you for this video, you were sooo on point with everything and it really helped me to realize why I do have so much stuff constantly and also how it would in actuality be more beneficial if I were to just get rid of a lot of what I have because it does totally weigh on you!

I would add that when I can't think of where to put something away, like there's nowhere for it to go, no place to put it....and then when I can't tidy up my entire house in 30 minutes. Then I know it's time to declutter, when I'm just too overwhelmed to get it all done and it's taking too long. I did two declutters this month, 22 items for 2-2-22 and then 222 items for 2-22-22!

Oh boy Kallie you hit the nail on the head! I know what I need to do, but finding the time to do it is the problem - THEN I organise a couple of days off and 90% of the time get sick , what is that? Fingers crossed I have 5 days off in a row next week and hoping that for 3 of them I get to declutter most of the house, the other 2 days belong to me to sort me out lol . As always loved and related so much to the contact ... As for the attic! - My personal room of doom that my friend is waiting until the weather gets brighter not a chance in heck I am going up there without lots and lots of light lol x

And don't you love the surprise stuff (some of it unidentifiable) you find way at the back? I solved that by getting several YouCopia fridge caddies. I was lucky to find them discounted at Grocery Outlet, but even if you pay full price they are worth it and will save money in the long run with less food waste. Having all the bottles and jars corralled in easy to access bins makes an inestimable difference in keeping the fridge clean and organized. Also makes it easier to assess what you need to restock.

Put it away and get rid of the box but most of my boxes get torn apart to use in my garden to put on top of the soil to put mulch on top so it doesn't go to waste. Thanks again.

Everything you said I've experienced from thinking about it all the time to systems failing and my personal nemesis the piles. Still battling those in my craftroom off and on but I am getting better. Floaters tend to congregate on my ironing station until I let them go or deal with it.
